, have just released their latest game, Beach Buggy Blitz. Like their last game, this one is designed with special features that only a Tegra 3 quad-core processor could deliver.

We had a chance to look at this casual driving adventure game back at Google IO and found it to be anything but boring.  The endless driver will definitely appeal to fans of games like Temple Run and the graphics are the stuff that nerd dreams.

Initially an exclusive Tegra title, the game will launch on additional mobile platforms at a later date.  Should you have an NVIDIA-powered beast , you can enjoy special enhancements such as motion blur, lens splash, dynamic headlights in caves, and real-time rendering of car shadows.

The game is set to be live any moment now so be sure to refresh the Google Play link!

Netflix app gets Wi-Fi only toggle

Posted: 06 Sep 2012 01:15 PM PDT

The official Netflix app for Android has been updated today and it brings a key, long-desired feature.  Now, users can toggle a setting which tells the app to only work over W-Fi networks.  This doesn’t sound like all that big of a deal, but it will go a long way to keeping your data plans in check.  Should be less fear about seeing that shared data plan bill, right?

We know many of you love to watch Netflix on your Android smartphones and tablets. We just launched a new feature where you can select to playback on Wi-Fi networks only. This means that while you can search, browse and enjoy all aspects of the Netflix app on a mobile data connection or Wi-Fi, you can choose (via a “Settings” feature) to playback on Wi-Fi networks only.  - Netflix

Barnes & Noble launching a successor to Nook Tablet?

Posted: 06 Sep 2012 11:25 AM PDT

Today is finally the day when Amazon will launch some new “amazing” stuff, and that event will make an impact on their competitors,  forcing them to come up with new ideas and something that is “extraordinary”, and it seems Barnes & Noble is already planning something. According to Engadget’s trusted source, B&N is working on a successor to the Nook Tablet.

It’s rumored that the tablet will be “super light”, and the most exciting thing is that it will feature an “incredible display” with 243 ppi, good enough? Robert Brunner of Ammunition will be handling the designing of the tablet, so you can expect a “big blast” from Barnes & Noble anytime soon.

Amazon event is also live at the moment so tell us: are you planning to grab a new tablet from Amazon or you want to wait and see what B&N got? Or you are happy with your Nexus 7?

Amazon announces Kindle Fire HD family

Posted: 06 Sep 2012 11:14 AM PDT

kindle-fire-hd-8-9-games

Amazon today confirmed that they Kindle Fire HD is a reality and it’s coming soon as the successor to last year’s Kindle Fire. The 7-inch 16GB Kindle Fire HD retails for $199 and ships on September 14 while a larger 8.9-inch model will run $299 and ship in November.

The specifications for the Kindle Fire HD are certainly an improvement over the predecessor and include a TI OMAP4470 processor, 16GB internal storage, and front-facing camera.  Not bad when you look at what the same money purchased just a few weeks back. Additional details include HDMI output, Bluetooth connectivity, stereo speakers with Dolby Digital Plus, and dual-antenna 5GHz band for Wi-Fi.

Check out the Kindle Fire HD Gallery!

And for those who really like the original model, you can grab one today at a newly slashed price of $159.  The new Kindle Fire 2 also includes a faster processor, double the RAM, 40% faster performance, and improved battery life. Shipping begins on September 14.

Not a fan of Wi-Fi only?

Amazon has today introduced a 4G LTE variant of the Kindle Fire HD which provides access to AT&T’s growing network.  The cost of the data plan is only $50 per year and the user gets 250MB data per month.  Crazy attractive price, but not much data.  The device is the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD with 32GB internal storage, runs $499 and ships on November 20.

But wait, there’s more!

Amazon has also introduces a new Whispersync capability for audiobooks and ereaders which lets one pick up directly where they leave off, regardless of whether it was text or audio.  Perfect for those who read at home and want to listen to the rest of the story in the car.

Another great feature introduced today is X-Ray for Movies, which lets you dig deeper into a film.  Want to see what that guy’s name is in the background?  Thanks to a partnership with IMDB, it’s now possible.

Whispersync for games is also a reality, and allows game players to pick up right where they left off, even if on another device.

How does setting a time limit sound for your kids?  Kindle FreeTime is a feature that enables parents to predetermine how long another user may be able to use the Kindle Fire HD. Speaking of which, this apparently marks the introduction of multiple user accounts for one device.

Ring, ring, ring?

As for the rumored Kindle Phone?  Well, Bezos and Co. never even mentioned it.

The Kindle Fire HD familythe most-advanced tablets:

Amazon is also introducing an all-new upgraded version of the best-selling standard definition Kindle Fire with a faster processor, twice the memory and longer battery life—all for an even lower breakthrough price—only $159.  Meet the all-new Kindle Fire family at www.amazon.com/kindlefirehd.

"We're taking on the most popular price point for a tablet, $499, but doubling the storage and incredibly, adding ultra-fast 4G LTE wireless," said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com Founder and CEO.  "Kindle Fire HD is not only the most-advanced hardware, it's also a service.  When combined with our enormous content ecosystem, unmatched cross-platform interoperability and standard-setting customer service, we hope people will agree that Kindle Fire HD is the best high-end tablet anywhere, at any price."

The Best Hardware

Stunning Custom HD Display

The 8.9" display on Kindle Fire HD features an incredible 254 pixels per inch with a resolution of 1920×1200, with pixels that are indistinguishable to the human eye.  The 7" Kindle Fire HD features a stunning HD display with 1280×800 resolution that delivers deep, detailed contrast and rich, natural color.  Kindle Fire HD also uses Gorilla Glass to provide superior strength and reliability.  Kindle Fire HD starts with excellent resolution, but that is only the beginning—Amazon also added custom features that reduce glare and improve color saturation at any viewing angle.

Most tablet displays are made up of two pieces of glass—an LCD on the bottom and a touch sensor on the top, separated by an air gap. This air gap allows light to come through the touch sensor and reflect off the LCD, which causes added glare for the user.  Fire HD solves this air gap problem by laminating the touch sensor and the LCD together into a single layer of glass, creating a display that is easy to view even in overhead light, and reducing glare by 25% relative to the latest generation iPad.

Like many tablets, Kindle Fire HD uses in-plane switching (IPS) to improve color reproduction. But displays that only use IPS still appear washed out at various angles, such as laid sideways in bed, flat on a table, or propped up in a case. Fire HD features an Advanced True Wide polarizing filter that is applied directly to the LCD panel.  This results in a display that shows the same deep contrast and rich, detailed color from any angle.

High-End Laptop-Quality Wi-Fi—40% Faster Downloads and High-Speed Streaming

HD content has much larger file sizes than standard definition content—for example, Marvel's The Avengers in standard definition is 785 MB, but in HD, The Avengers is 2.97 GB.  Files of this size require the very latest in Wi-Fi technology to download or stream the HD content quickly and reliably—anything else results in buffering, slow downloads and dropped connections.  Many Wi-Fi enabled devices only use the 2.4 GHz wireless frequency.  This frequency is crowded since it is used by everything from other tablets to microwave ovens, baby monitors, Bluetooth devices, not to mention the neighbors' Wi-Fi networks.  Kindle Fire HD circumvents this congestion with state-of-the-art dual-band Wi-Fi.  Kindle Fire HD can automatically switch between the 2.4 GHz network and the newer, less crowded  5 GHz network, resulting in better range and less interference.  In addition, dual antennas and Multiple In/Multiple Out (MIMO) allow for higher bandwidth and longer range.  The new Kindle Fire HD is the first tablet to market with all three of these latest generation Wi-Fi technologies—dual-band support, dual antennas, and MIMO.  This is the first time this state-of-the-art Wi-Fi technology has been offered in a tablet, resulting in 40% faster throughput compared to the latest generation iPad.

Latest Generation 4G LTE Wireless

The large-screen Kindle Fire HD is also available with ultra-fast 4G LTE, with download speeds as fast as Wi-Fi.  To keep the 4G Kindle Fire HD just 8.8 mm thin, Amazon custom-designed its 4G wireless modem to be just 2.2 mm.  Some 4G devices don't support all of the non-4G bands—Kindle Fire HD includes support for 10-bands, so even if a customer doesn't have perfect 4G coverage, the Kindle will fall back to the fastest available 3G speeds.

Amazon's Breakthrough 4G LTE Data Package

The 4G Kindle Fire HD comes with the most affordable 4G tablet data package.  Customers will have access to a 12-month data plan with 250MB per month, 20GB of Amazon Cloud storage, and a $10 credit in the Amazon Appstore for a one-time cost of $49.99. In fact, when you combine the cost of the device and the data plan, customers who purchase the Kindle Fire HD 4G LTE will pay over $400 less than latest generation iPad owners in the first year of ownership. Customers can also choose to upgrade to 3 GB or 5 GB data plans from AT&T directly from the device.

8 GB of Storage is Not Enough for an HD Tablet

Customers want to enjoy HD content if they have an HD tablet—and 8 GB of on-device storage isn't enough for the larger HD file sizes.  The 7" Kindle Fire HD is available with 16 GB or 32 GB of on-device storage, and the large screen Kindle Fire is available with 16 GB, 32 GB or 64 GB of on-device storage.  This large on-device storage capacity is in addition to the free storage Amazon provides for Amazon digital content in the Amazon Cloud.  Amazon digital content is automatically backed up for free in the Amazon Cloud's Worry-Free Archive where it's available anytime.

Powerful World-Class Processor—Snappy and Smooth

An HD display and HD content must be driven by a powerful processor and optimized software.  The Kindle Fire HD family features world-class processors and the new Imagination Technologies graphics engine for lightning-fast HD graphics and excellent fluidity.  The 8.9" Kindle Fire HD is powered by the latest generation OMAP4 4470 processor and Imagination SGX544 graphics engine capable of over 12 billion floating point operations per second—50 percent more than Tegra 3, and both Kindle Fire HD 7" and 8.9" come with higher memory bandwidth than Tegra 3.  Combining the latest generation processors with significant customization of the Kindle Fire software by Amazon engineers results in a snappy and smooth experience for the user.

Dual Stereo Speakers and Exclusive Dolby Audio—The New Standard for Tablet Audio

Customers shouldn't need to wear headphones while watching a movie on a tablet to get excellent sound.  Kindle Fire HD solves this by combining dual stereo speakers with the next generation Dolby Digital Plus audio platformthe standard in high performance audioto offer a world-class audio experience.  Dolby's audio suite for Kindle Fire HD includes technology used to adjust volume and deliver easier-to-understand dialogue in movies and TV shows.  Kindle Fire HD automatically optimizes the audio profile based on what a customer is doing, such as watching a movie, listening to music, using third party apps like Pandora and Netflix, and also optimizes for headphones versus speakers.  All of these pieces combine to create an exceptional audio experience that results in clearer, crisper and balanced sound quality.

11 Hours of Battery Life

The 7" Kindle Fire HD is optimized to deliver high performance without sacrificing battery life, delivering over 11 hours of battery life.

Thin and Light

Even with a custom display, a powerful processor, extra speakers and dual-band/dual-antenna Wi-Fi, the new Kindle Fire HD is extremely light and thin.  In fact, Kindle Fire HD 8.9" weighs only 20 ounces and is just 8.8 mm thin.  Kindle Fire HD 7" is small enough to take everywhere and light enough to hold easily and comfortably in one hand.

Connect with Bluetooth and HDMI

Kindle Fire HD supports Bluetooth, enabling customers to connect their wireless Bluetooth headphones or Bluetooth speakers to listen to songs, videos or audiobooks.  With Bluetooth connectivity, customers can also easily connect to a wide range of Bluetooth-enabled keyboards.  HDMI out makes it easy for customers to connect the Kindle Fire HD to their big-screen TV to enjoy their favorite HD videos and photos.

Stay in Touch with Front-Facing HD Camera

The new Kindle Fire HD features a front-facing HD camera.  Skype created a customized app tailored for Kindle Fire HD that is ready to use out of the box for free HD video calls at home and abroad.  Kindle Fire HD makes it easy for the over 500 million customers already using Skype to get in touch with friends and family.

Beautiful Leather Covers

Covers for Kindle Fire HD feature a premium textured leather exterior in a variety of colors and a subtle woven nylon interior to provide the lightest and thinnest form of protection. The integrated magnetic clasp ensures the cover remains securely closed while in a backpack, purse, or briefcase. The cover automatically wakes Kindle Fire HD upon opening and puts it to sleep when closed, making it easy to dive right back into whatever content a customer is enjoying.

All-New Features Only Amazon Can Offer

X-Ray for Books

One year ago, Amazon introduced X-Ray on Kindle Touch, and customers loved it.  Amazon is extending X-Ray to books on Kindle Fire, making it easier than ever for customers to learn more about the content they love by exploring the "bones of the book."  With a single tap, readers can see all the passages across a book that mention ideas, fictional characters, historical figures, places or topics that interest them, as well as more detailed descriptions from Wikipedia and Shelfari, Amazon's community-powered encyclopedia for book lovers.

X-Ray for Movies

"X-Ray for Movies" is a new feature that revolutionizes the movie experience by bringing the power of IMDb directly to movies on Kindle Fire HD, accessible with a simple tap.  Without ever leaving the movie, customers can look up any actor in the scene or movie, see what other movies they have been in, and view photos, biographies and more.  X-Ray is offered only by Amazon and is exclusive to the Amazon ecosystem.  IMDb, an Amazon company for 14 years, is the #1 movie website in the world with more than 160 million monthly unique visitors worldwide.

X-Ray for Textbooks

Glossaries in print textbooks contain the most important information for students, but they're placed inconveniently in the back of the book.  And glossaries don’t always contain enough information for students working to understand new concepts.  X-Ray for Textbooks solves these problems by integrating the glossary directly into each textbook page and by algorithmically assembling related data from Wikipedia and YouTube.

Immersion Reading

Research supports that readers can benefit from listening while reading.  Together, Amazon and Audible invented "Immersion Reading," allowing customers to fuse together printed text and professionally-narrated audiobooks, giving readers the ability to experience their reading with two senses—sight and sound.  As the reader views the text of their book on Kindle Fire, text is highlighted as it is professionally-narrated, creating a more immersive experience, as well as deeper learning and comprehension.

Whispersync for Voice

Whispersync for Voice allows customers to synchronize their Kindle books with professionally-narrated audiobooks—customers can start reading a book on Kindle Fire and seamlessly switch to listening to the companion audiobook, picking up exactly where they left off.  With Whispersync for Voice, customers can continue enjoying books during commutes or any other time their eyes are busy.  When they get in the car, customers can effortlessly pick up the story right where they left off reading by listening to the professionally-narrated audiobook using Bluetooth on Kindle Fire HD or with any Audible app on their smartphone.

Ideal for Gaming

Amazon has worked with leading developers to offer new Android games exclusively on Kindle Fire HD, including Activision's popular Skylanders Cloud Patrol franchise and Crytek's Fibble.  In Skylanders Cloud Patrol, gamers will discover a new feature—the ability to purchase physical toys from within a game.  Customers will be able to purchase a unique Skylanders character with a single click, and Amazon.com will deliver it to their doorstep. In addition to hardware that's perfect for gaming like stunning custom HD displays, fast Wi-Fi and large on-device storage, the Kindle Fire HD family also offers HD Games, gyroscope and accelerometer for full tilt and turn controls, as well as social gaming features including group leaderboards and achievements.

Whispersync for Games

One of the biggest frustrations of mobile gaming is that when customers switch devices or delete and re-install the game on the same device, they have to start a level over or go back to the beginning of the game.  To solve this problem, Amazon extended its Whispersync technology to gaming with Whispersync for Games.  Whispersync for Games syncs a customer's place in the game and saves unlocked levels, so even if they get a new device, the progress is backed up in the cloud.

Kindle FreeTime

Amazon today reinvented parental controls with Kindle FreeTime.  FreeTime gives parents easy-to-use tools to personalize their children's digital media experience.   With FreeTime, parents never have to worry what content their kids will access—parents select all of the content their kids can see and kids can't exit FreeTime without a password.  FreeTime also lets parents limit their kids' screen time by content type—they may choose to limit videos and games, for example, but make reading time unlimited.  Kindle FreeTime will be available for free on all of the new Kindle Fire devices starting in the coming weeks.

Cloud-Accelerated Silk Browser

The new Kindle Fire family uses a new version of Amazon Silk with the unique "split browser" architecture that leverages the computing speed and power of Amazon Web Services to deliver content faster.  The new Amazon Silk browser features an updated core rendering engine and a reengineered transport layer that contribute to faster page loads.  Customers can experience full-screen browsing, reading view, and improved browsing with most-visited, trending and recommended sites all available from a single screen.

All-New Email and Calendar

The new Kindle Fire family features world-class Microsoft Exchange integration, with fine-tuned performance on many of the most critical e-mail functions.  For example, typical Exchange accounts sync with the oldest emails first, ending with the most recent emails—Kindle Fire instead syncs with newer emails first, then with older emails, getting customers faster access to the most recent emails they are looking for.  Kindle Fire also features a new calendar app, making it easy for customers to stay connected and keep track of their schedules.  The new e-mail client offers support for the world's most popular email providers—including Gmail, Microsoft Exchange, Hotmail and more.

Photos Brought to Life

Photos come alive in stunning high-resolution on Kindle Fire HD.  Fire's mosaic view arranges personal photos beautifully, and customers will be delighted to see their best shots on their TV with HDMI out.  Kindle Fire lets customers easily import their photos from Facebook and because their photos are securely stored in Amazon Cloud Drive, they never have to worry about losing their favorite pictures.

New Latest Generation Kindle Fire—Only $159

Kindle Fire, the #1 best-selling product on Amazon for the past year, is now even better, with all the features customers love about the original Kindle Fire—all the content, seamless integration with the Amazon Cloud, Whispersync, and a brilliant 7" touchscreen—now with a faster processor for 40% faster performance, twice the memory and longer battery life.  The new Kindle Fire also offers all of the new features that are exclusive to the Kindle Fire family—including X-Ray for Movies, X-Ray for Books, Immersion Reading, Whispersync for Voice, Kindle FreeTime and more.

Sprint launching Jelly Bean for Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S 4G today?

Posted: 06 Sep 2012 08:08 AM PDT

If you are on Sprint and right now using either the Galaxy Nexus or Nexus S 4G, then today might be your lucky day. Folks over at Phandroid got their hands on an internal leak shot of Sprint’s system, and it clearly tells us that today, on September 6, Sprint’s Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S 4G will be updated to the mightiest version of Android yet, known as Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

As it’s mentioned, Google will push the update to all the handsets, and customers cannot initiate a download on their own, but there’s nothing wrong in trying it yourself, right? If it’s your lucky day, then you will get a notification on your phone about the update from Google, but if you didn’t then don’t worry, because you are in the cue.

If your Galaxy Nexus or Nexus S is already on Jelly Bean, then don’t forget to share your first impressions with us in the comment box below.

HTC’s 5-inch device shows up in Verizon system

Posted: 06 Sep 2012 06:29 AM PDT

In another sign that Verizon is set to soon offer a phone/tablet experience from HTC , an HTC 6435 has been spotted in the carrier’s internal system.  Rumored to be a 1920x1080p HD display, the yet-named device has seen its fair share of leaks over the past few days.

With HTC expected to announce a number of new products at their September 19 event, we hope to see some Android on the agenda.  As of right now there are multiple devices being tossed around the internet, including two tablets.  It’s hard to fathom a 5-inch display at the 1080p resolution, especially when a 7-inch Flyer successor is expected to have 1280×768 pixel display.  Here’s to getting some clarification in the next two weeks!

Kobo introduces 7-inch, Android 4.0 ‘Arc’ tablet

Posted: 06 Sep 2012 06:08 AM PDT

Kobo, in what seems like a preemptive attack on Amazon and their next Kindle Fire, has announced a new 7-inch Android-based tablet.  Called the Kobo Arc, it is the $200 successor to the Kobo Vox.

Details for the device are pretty decent when compared to other products in the price range and include a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, a 7-inch 1280 x 800 HD IPS display, 720p HD front facing camera (2-megapixel), microUSB, and Wi-Fi connectivity.  The Kobo Arc comes preloaded with the full Google Play experience, something that neither the Nook Tablet nor Kindle Fire can claim.  Additional apps include Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Rdio, Zinio, and PressReader.

Powered by Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, Kobo advises that it will receive Android 4.1 Jelly Bean “within a few months time”. Look for the Kobo Arc in either black or white color options and a choice of 8GB ($199) and 16GB ($349) storage capacities.

Cloud.tv’s Dayframe rethinks docking apps for Android

Posted: 06 Sep 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Cloud.tv, the guys behind HD widgets and Cloudskipper, have redesigned docking apps for Android.  Well, that’s the hope, at least.  Today sees them releasing a new app, Dayframe,  for your Android 2.3+ device which is equal parts gorgeous, convenient, and flexible.

Designed with the Nexus 7 and Android 4.1 in mind, Dayframe brings your Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Tumblr accounts together alongside the current time, weather, alarm details, and more.  What’s more, the user has the option of toggling on/off voice control for sending messages, leaving comments on photos, and searching.

It’s worth pointing out that today’s release is just a preview version of the final app and that you may encounter a goofy situation here and there.  We’ve played with it a bit these last two days and love the way it looks on the Nexus 7.  If we could somehow enable this to be our default mode for plugged in and landscape orientation, we’d be even more stoked. The final release of Dayframe is slated for later this fall, so keep you eyes open!

Download Dayframe (Google Play)

DayFrame Public Preview Available Thursday, September 6th.
The creative minds behind HD Widgets and Cloudskipper are happy to announce a public preview of their upcoming app, DayFrame, will be available as a free download on Thursday September 6th.
Our goal was to create the next big thing: a revolutionary dock app for the Nexus 7 and other Android tablets and devices.
DayFrame’s outstanding feature is an always up-to-date photostream of friends, family, and interests gathered together from your favorite social networks, including Instagram, Tumblr, Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr.
Spend less time flipping through apps and enjoy pictures in your real world. DayFrame pulls from several sources, mixing personal moments with shared art and memes so it’s always fresh and interesting.
But DayFrame is more than a slideshow. Not only did we include social essentials like user info, caption, likes, and comments, we also added practical HUD features like time & date, current weather, next alarm, and battery/charge status.
But the KILLER difference is the BIG voice-command button on the front of the slideshow. Need to look something up? Send a message? Now just tap and say it. Want to comment on a friend’s picture? No problem – speak and send! Now that’s a dock app!
We also wanted something useful for repurposing older Android tablets: place one in the kitchen and let it run as a voice-controlled home kiosk and conversational photo frame. Wicked.
DayFrame works on all Android devices running 2.3 & up but works best using Jellybean’s amazingly accurate voice input.
There’s so much to do and much more to come, but we couldn’t wait. We really wanted to share our idea and start getting feedback early on.
This is a functional alpha release that will be available this Thursday morning. The official release will be out later in the fall.

New platform figures indicate Android 4.0 powers more than 100 million devices

Posted: 06 Sep 2012 05:48 AM PDT

The latest Android developer platform figures are online and show a steadily growing Android 4.0 and 4.1 experience.  As of the 14 day period ending September 4, Ice Cream Sandwich now powers 20.9 percent of all Android devices, or roughly 100 million units.  How did we arrive at that number?  Quick and dirty math, my friends.

Eric Schmidt, speaking yesterday at the Motorola event, told us that there are now more than 480,000,000 Android devices in the world.  Growing at a rate of 1.3 million per day, it’s a number we simply cannot wrap our heads around.  Nevertheless, we did a quick calculation and found that 20.9% of 480 million comes out to 100,320,000 Android 4.0.X devices.

Using the same unscientific practice, here’s what we found for the other platform releases.  Keep in mind that all this has likely changed by the time you read this.  You know, something about a million products per day just fuzzes up the math.

  • Android 1.5 Cupcake – 960,000
  • Android 1.6 Donut – 1,920,000
  • Android 2.1 Eclair – 17,760,000
  • Android 2.2 Froyo – 67,200,000
  • Android 2.3.X Gingerbread – 276,000,000
  • Android 3.X Honeycomb – 10,080,000
  • Android 4.0.X  - Ice Cream Sandwich – 100,320,000
  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean – 5,760,000

Will Amazon introduce a Kindle phone?

Posted: 06 Sep 2012 05:23 AM PDT

As many of you know, Amazon has an event slated for today where we expect to see the successor to the Kindle Fire.  Given all the stars that have lined up as of late, anything less would be considered a severe let down.  But what if that was not all Amazon had up their sleeve?

The guys at The Verge are reporting that Amazon has, in fact, been working on an Android 4.0-powered phone that runs on the same OS as the Kindle.  The handset is said to be incomplete at this time but it could still be part of the September 6 presentation.  Amazon has recently chosen Nokia for the mapping technology in their Kindle Fire so it stands to reason that it could be in a smartphone as well. There are no other details to share at this time however we are but hours from potentially learning more.

What say you about a Kindle Phone? Do you like the idea of Amazon getting into the handset business?

Need more proof that Samsung’s latest flagship is a runaway hit?  The company today issued a press release touting a record sales figure for the Galaxy S III through its first 100 days.  As the headline tells us, the Android 4.0 smartphone has reached 20 million sold in just over a 3-month window.  This officially makes the handset Samsung’s most successful smartphone to date.

"The GALAXY S III has enjoyed tremendous attention and popularity since its launch in May, and we are thrilled with its success," said JK Shin, President and Head of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics. Lookout releases State of Mobile Security 2012 report

Posted: 06 Sep 2012 05:02 AM PDT

Lookout Mobile Security has released its latest State of Mobile Security report which looks at the various threats that face mobile users.  Not only do we learn what the threats are but we’re also given insight into the various markets which are most often affected.  Spoiler alert: Toll fraud is fast becoming the preferred way of messing up your day – and bank account.

Depending on how you perceive mobile threats, this can be either an eye opening experience or another list of hooey designed to sell a product.  As for us, we prefer to error on the side of judgement so we’ll go ahead and share the details.

Key findings in State of Mobile Security 2012:

  • Mobile malware is a profitable business. The mobile malware industry has matured and become a viable business model for attackers.
  • One type of Malware designed for profit — Toll Fraud — is the most prevalent type of malware.   Primarily impacting Eastern Europe and Russia, Toll Fraud has successfully stolen millions from consumers.
  • As the mobile industry evolves so do mobile threats. Fraudsters are tampering with legitimate mobile tools and advertising systems to achieve broader distribution and make more money.
  • Mobile privacy is a growing issue. Five percent of free Android mobile applications contain one or more aggressive ad networks, which can access personal information or display confusing ads. In addition, a number of high—profile iOS applications raised red flags about privacy issues this year.
  • The likelihood of encountering mobile malware greatly depends on your geographic location. Android malware likelihood is much higher in Russia, Ukraine and China than elsewhere.
  • Mobile malware distribution techniques are diversifying. Attackers are using a combination of new and existing distribution techniques, including email spam, hacked websites that enable drive-by-downloads, and affiliate-based marketing.

Remember kids, there’s nothing out there that will protect you 100% of the time against 100% of the threats.  Unless you are simply not powering your handset on, there’s always a risk that you could encounter something goofy.  Lookout, like other players in this field, want to ensure your Android experience is an enjoyable one, with peace of mind and double rainbows.

We say this all the time, be careful where you visit with your phone and watch what you are clicking on.  If you are about to do download an app, do a bit of research, especially if it’s outside of the Google Play Store, Amazon, or Getjar.  Read reviews, check blogs, and watch your backside.

Lookout's State of Mobile Security Identifies Malware Designed for Profit and
Privacy as 2012 Growth Areas

Lookout's report exposes drivers for encountering malware, new malware distribution methods,
profit-making schemes and privacy threats

San Francisco, CA — September 6, 2012 — Lookout Inc., the leading mobile security company,
today shared its State of Mobile Security Report 2012. In the report, Lookout explains the issues
that individuals faced on mobile devices this year and explores the prominent trends in mobile
threats. The report takes a holistic view of the mobile threat landscape, providing important
context on an individuals' likelihood of encountering threats and analyzing the factors that have
advanced the malware industry in 2012. The findings are based on information from Lookout's
Mobile Threat Network, which includes threat data collected from more than one million apps
and millions of devices worldwide.

The key findings from the State of Mobile Security 2012 report are:

Mobile malware has now become a profitable industry. Because of its global ubiquity as a
phone payment mechanism, premium text billing is the most common tactic used by malware
writers to commit financial fraud on mobile. This class of malware, termed "Toll Fraud," has
become the most prevalent type of malware within the past year. Just one family of Toll Fraud
malware, FakeInst, accounted for 82 percent of Lookout user detections in June 2012 and is
estimated to have successfully stolen millions of dollars from people in Russia, the Middle
Eastand parts of Europe.

Mobile privacy is a growing issue. Privacy is one of the biggest issues people face on mobile
devices. In 2012, a significant portion of privacy problems arose from aggressive advertising
techniques, including pushing out-of-app ads and accessing personally identifiable information
without user notification. Lookout estimates that five percent of Android applications include
these aggressive ad networks and these apps have been downloaded more than 80 million
times.

Geography and user behavior are main drivers for encountering threats. People in Russia,
Ukraine and China have a significantly higher likelihood of encountering malware than
elsewhere. User behavior is the other leading factor; people who download apps outside of a
trusted source, like Google Play, have a higher chance of encountering malware.

Visiting unsafe links from a mobile device is one of the most common ways people encounter
mobile threats. Web-based threats like phishing are often able to target both traditional PC
users and mobile users equally, making these schemes easy for malware writers to produce and
replicate. Lookout's detected that four out of ten mobile users click on an unsafe link over the
course of a year.

Gaming the app ecosystem. Lookout observed malware designed to enable shady app
promoters to conduct download fraud. These malware families primarily affected users in China.
In the past year, Lookout discovered malware capable of automatically downloading apps from
alternative app market sources without the user’s knowledge, rooting the phone to download
additional apps without warning, or installing third-party app stores.

"Trust is one of the most important factors influencing whether people will continue to use
mobile devices to their full potential," said Kevin Mahaffey, CTO and co-founder of Lookout. "As
smartphones and tablets have come to house our personal data, access financial information,
and power practically all of our communications, there are more incentives for attackers to
strike. Our mission is to identify and solve emerging threats so people around the world can
continue to trust their mobile devices"

Read or download the complete State of Mobile Security 2012 report on the Lookout website.

How to stay safe on mobile

  • Use caution when downloading apps. Only download apps from trusted sources like Google Play and the App Store. Read user reviews and verify the developer is trusted. Be wary of apps that promise a paid app for free.
  • Check for suspicious activity. Review your phone bill regularly to confirm you haven't been charged. Unusual charges could be a sign that your phone is infected, the result of premium SMS fraud.
  • Use caution when surfing the web. Pay close attention to the address when you click on a web link; make sure it matches the web site it claims to be.
  • Guard against malware. Download a mobile security app for your phone, like Lookout, that scans for malware, spyware, and other viruses.
