Do recent Samsung trademarks hint at Galaxy goodies to come?

Posted: 08 Oct 2012 11:35 AM PDT

Seeing as how it has been a while since we swung by the US Trademarks and Patents office, we figured we would spend a few minutes poking around. As often is our wont, we looked up some of our favorite search terms.  Tap tap tap and whatya know?  Looks like we have some new Samsung stuff coming down the road.  As if we were surprised.

While it’s difficult to say for certain, most of these could be tied to features or services of Samsung devices and not actual products.  On the other hand, it could also be stuff that belongs outside of the Android spectrum. That said, we’d love to hear from you if you’re aware of anything special here. Did we already miss something covered elsewhere?

  • Samsung Equator - October 1, 2012
  • Samsung Galaxy Wide – September 27, 2012
  • Samsung Galaxy Mega View - September 27, 2012
  • Samsung Galaxy Mega - September 27, 2012

What do you think a Galaxy Mega would be?

Alcatel One Touch T10 Android tablet unveiled

Posted: 08 Oct 2012 10:06 AM PDT

Alcatel is not the leading mobile phone brand in the world, but they are working to gain a notable position in the market. Of course it’s not an easy task but Alcatel is planning big and targeting Google Nexus 7 with their new device. Presenting the Alcatel One Touch T10, a 7-inch Android powered tablet running on Android 4.0 a.k.a Ice Cream Sandwich. It’s expected that the tablet will go on sale for only 120 euros in the Europe, so you can expect a cheaper price for States side as well.

About the specs, it features a 7-inch display 1 GHz Rockchip RK2918 ARM Cortex-A8 single core processor, 800 x 480 pixel resolution, 1GB of memory, 4GB of flash storage, microSD card slot for up to 32GB of additional storage, only 0.3MP front-facing camera for video chatting, 802.11n WiFi, a micro USB port, mini HDMI port, and a headphone jack. Also it will come pre-loaded with Google services like Google Maps, Google Play Store etc.

Though the tablet isn’t featuring the bells & whistles we are looking for, but if they launch it for a $100 in US, then I think it’s not a bad deal, right? Don’t forget to share your thoughts with us in the comment box below.

Sprint calls on StarStarMe for vanity dialing service

Posted: 08 Oct 2012 08:19 AM PDT

Face it, you can’t remember the phone numbers to half of your contacts.  Now that you have a smartphone and can dial or text by name, you’ve stopped caring about 10-digit numbers.  Sprint is today introducing something new to their subscribers which lets them use a name in place of a phone number.  Using a service called StarStar Me, it allows for people to call friends of family members based on a much easier **NAME

Sony’s flagship ‘Odin’ handset, set to rule over 2013

Posted: 08 Oct 2012 07:14 AM PDT

Sony’s next flagship smartphone release, the C650X, hopes to be a God-king that rules over all other smartphones.  Carrying the codename of ‘Odin’, the phone looks to be running Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean and a 10.1.A.0.XXX firmware.

The User-Agent Profile (UAProf) for the Odin has been found online and shows three different  numbers: C6502, C6503 and C6506.  As Xperia Blog suggests, these are all the same device but with slight number changes to correspond with regional releases

HTC Q3 revenue tumbles by nearly half year-over-year

Posted: 08 Oct 2012 06:47 AM PDT

Taiwanese hardware maker HTC this morning released its final, unaudited results for the third quarter of this year Q2 ’12. Things could be much better for the quietly brilliant outfit as they report revenue of $2.397 billion for the three month period that just ended.  Additionally, the net income of  $133 million was considerably lower than the $247 million posted by HTC just one quarter earlier.

Things are getting increasingly more difficult for HTC as Samsung continues to expand its Android reach in key markets.  Factor in a growing Sony and LG and we see a tough road ahead for HTC.  On the other hand, we cannot dismiss the fact that a new HTC One X+ and some Windows Phone 8 stuff might not help the company out as the year draws to a close.  For us to completely rule out any Windows Phone impact would be downright silly; Microsoft will be pushing these devices heavily.

Motorola not developing Webtop on future devices

Posted: 08 Oct 2012 06:25 AM PDT

Motorola has confirmed that its Webtop technology is no longer going to be included in future Android-based smartphones.  An official announcement from the hardware maker advises that even though there was a good level of interest and community support, the ends do not justify the means.  To that end, Motorola will cease developing handsets with Webtop capability

T-Mobile: Galaxy S III is our all-time best-selling device

Posted: 08 Oct 2012 06:00 AM PDT

T-Mobile’s best-selling device of all time is a phone that has only been available for a few months.  A tweet from the nation’s fourth-largest carrier from over the weekend indicates that the Samsung Galaxy S III is doing quite well around Magenta’s neck of the woods.

While this is certainly good news for T-Mobile, it’s also promising for Samsung, and Android, as well.  Consider that the handset has already done better than the G1, or any model of myTouch, or SideKick ever did in their entire run. Fantastic, no? With a good 6-9 months left before T-Mobile gets rid of this handset, T-Mobile will have set the bar high with Samsung’s flagship when it goes away.

First signs of Motorola Occam, Manta surface online

Posted: 08 Oct 2012 05:51 AM PDT

A pair of Motorola devices have just landed on our radar this morning, coming in the form two codenames: Occam and Manta.  Very little is known about these two models, save for their flavor of Android and benchmark scores.  Nevertheless, we’re glad to have some new Motorola stuff to look forward to, even if it does sound decidedly “Razr”-ish

Angry Birds Star Wars coming November 8

Posted: 08 Oct 2012 05:38 AM PDT

Rovio, not wasting any time between releases, is set to drop its next game on November 8. We first sensed a disturbance in the Force last week when we saw that Rovio was teasing a Start Wars-infused Angry Birds announcement.  We didn’t expect a full crossover game, especially so soon, but we’re not complaining at all.  Not only do we have a bunch of new levels based on our favorite films of all time, but presumably a slew of toys for under our Christmas trees, too.
