Posted: 03 Oct 2012 04:29 PM PDT

LG has announced that its flagship Optimus G handset will be hitting US store shelves in both Sprint and AT&T flavors later this year. This would inevitably make the Optimus G the most powerful smartphone to arrive in America. Both handsets will sport the exact same specs, sans the camera sizes. While Sprint will be receiving the 13-megapixel model, which the company claims will offer  “the world’s best image quality”, AT&T is opting for a more modest 8-megapixel shooter. Both 16GB and 32GB models will be available, and the device will come pre-loaded with a 16GB MicroSD card.

Other specs include:

  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
  • 4.7-inch 1280 x 768 True HD IPS Display (with Zerogap Touch)
  • 1.5-GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor
  • 2,100mAh battery
  • 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera
  • 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.0

Pricing and availability haven’t been revealed just yet, though you can expect announcements from individual carriers to come in the future. Until then, hit the break to read the official press release.

Sprint and AT&T will be among the first wireless service providers in the world to offer the LG Optimus G, which is powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor – a 1.5GHz quad-core CPU processor with Asysnchronous Symmetric Multiprocessing, which enables each core to power up and down independently to increase performance while saving battery life.

Is the next wave of Google Nexus products advancing?

Posted: 03 Oct 2012 02:21 PM PDT

According to a leak from UK based phone retailer Carphone Warehouse, our Nexus 7 storage problems are soon to be over. The image above clearly lists a 32gb version of the flagship Google tablet and although it doesn’t say how much the new version will cost, I’m willing to bet it’ll be around $300, which is still less than its rival, the 32gb iPad. So it finally seems Google is listening to our complaints.

There’s more news too. Right above the aforementioned Nexus 7 leak is a line that reads: “Invisishield for Samsung Nexus 2″. Woah. This is hardly the first time a Galaxy Nexus successor has been mentioned, but so far most of the previous rumors have been proclaimed as bunk. Now we actually have a semi-reliable leak to drool over as we anxiously await Google to unveil the next iteration of the pure Google experience, and as we have seen from the early iPhone 5 leaks, these accessory manufactures are generally pretty reliable when it comes to leaks.

This single photo of a blue and yellow inventory system has officially started me salivating for the next wave of Google products to drool over.

Samsung claims misconduct by jury foreman in Samsung vs. Apple case

Posted: 03 Oct 2012 12:28 PM PDT

We already know that Samsung is appealing the big decision that landed in August involving Apple patents, and we already had an idea that they would go after the jury foreman, but now we have a clearer picture. Samsung has a dozen exhibits involving jury foreman, Velvin Hogan, and his public statements. He made himself available for several interviews after the trial and it seems as though he made a lot of misstatements. For example, he said design patents are based on “look and feel” and that prior art must be “interchangeable” in order to invalidate a patent. “These incorrect and extraneous legal standards had no place in the jury room,” wrote Samsung in its brief.

Apparently he also failed to disclose that he was sued by his former employer, Seagate Technology. Seagate is actuallyowned in part by Samsung, which means there is a bias that Samsung could have explored, but wasn’t able to since they weren’t aware of it. “Mr. Hogan's failure to disclose the Seagate suit raises issues of bias that Samsung should have been allowed to explore in questioning and that would have triggered a motion to strike for cause or a peremptory strike,” wrote Samsung’s lawyers.

Samsung also feels he never made is clear how pro-patent he was, and instead was silent on that question. Then later in interviews with The Verge he said, “except for my family, it [jury service] was the high point of my career… you might even say my life,” and that he wanted to be satisfied “that this trial was fair, and protected copyrights and intellectual property rights, no matter who they belonged to.”

Hogan was questioned about this and said that he disclosed everything that was necessary. For example, he was asked about any litigation from the last 10 years, but the Seagate issue was in 1993. He went on to say, "I answered every question the judge asked me… [Samsung] had every opportunity to question me.”

They have a few other arguments, but unlikely to be any stronger. Probably the second best one is the argument that only 5% of respondents, to a recent J.D. Power study, said that visual appeal is the reason why they purchased a phone. Based on this result, Samsung is arguing that the $1.05 billion in damages should be dropped by 95%. Good luck!!

The Samsung Galaxy S IV 13MP camera module has been spotted in the wild

Posted: 03 Oct 2012 10:20 AM PDT

Well it’s not too early to start the Galaxy S IV rumors is it? The first rumor was about a possible announcement at next year’s Mobile World Congress, which was quickly denied by Samsung. Now we have reports that a 13MP camera module for the Galaxy S IV was spotted, which isn’t anything earth-shattering. We actually thought the Galaxy S III and/or the Galaxy Note II would have a 13MP shooter, and interestingly enough, this lens was actually intended for those devices. For whatever reason, it was scrapped in favor of the current 8MP shooters.

The module was spotted by the Korean media and it will shoot images with a resolution of 4208 x 3120 and it measures 8.5×8.5×5.9mm. Who knows if this module will actually make it into the Galaxy S IV, but I think it’s safe to assume that we will get a pretty good upgrade either way.

UK 4G ready for widespread rollout after agreement between regulators, providers

Posted: 03 Oct 2012 09:30 AM PDT

Several UK mobile network providers, the UK's communications regulator Ofcom, and other government officials have announced a deal that will accelerate the rollout of 4G LTE services throughout the UK. The settlement means carriers like O2 and Vodafone will likely be able to start deploying their 4G LTE networks in early 2013, about six months earlier than originally thought.

UK carrier EE was previously granted permission to use some of their existing 1800 MHz spectrum for 4G LTE network purposes and they were expected to start that rollout this fall. However, other UK carriers like O2 and Vodafone had been threatening to launch legal action claiming the permission to use the spectrum for 4G services was improper and that EE was being given an unfair advantage. Ofcom has now agreed to accelerate the approval process for 4G LTE services for other carriers after a planned January action of old analog television spectrum occurs in January 2013.

With the agreement, EE is anticipated to announce the imminent launch of their 4G LTE network. They have indicated they have plans to deploy the service to 16 UK cities before the end of the year and to 98% of the UK by 2014. Other carriers will be behind with their deployments which should now occur sometime in early 2013, but with the agreement the head start that EE gets will not be as great.

The settlement means the UK will be able to start to catch back up to other countries that already have 4G LTE services well established. As Ed Richards, Ofcom's chief executive notes, consumers are the big winners as they will not have to wait for "a considerable period for the next generation of mobile broadband services."

Deutsche Telekom approves T-Mobile and MetroPCS merger

Posted: 03 Oct 2012 09:20 AM PDT

It was confirmed yesterday that MetroPCS and T-Mobile were in talks of a merger, now the deal has been approved. MetroPCS and their 9.3 million subscribers will be under the T-Mobile umbrella, headed by T-Mobile’s CEO John Legere. T-Mobile and MetroPCS have fewer subscribers than Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint, but this deal will bring them to over 35 million customers. This isn’t the first time T-Mobile has tried a merger, but this deal seems more likely to go through, giving T-Mobile more subscribers and network coverage. Deutsche Telekom will have a large stake in the new company which may or may not diminish over time. Expect for this deal to be finalized early next year.

Lockitron Officially Up For Pre-Order, Aims To Give Android Users Another Means Of Keeping Solicitors At Bay

Posted: 03 Oct 2012 08:02 AM PDT

Android is a platform that can simply make our lives easier– and I’m not just talking about smartphone use either. Lockitron is a company well known for security at a residence or business. How it works is simple: there’s a smart deadbolt system that will unlock and lock doors all by using your smartphone and a WiFi network. The great thing is that Lockitron is a unit that fits over an existing deadbolt, meaning there’s no complicated installation for the unit to work. In addition, there’s an app that’s available which allows for one or multiple users and their access levels.

The new unit is available for pre-order at a reasonable $150, with the first batches being shipped out by March. If you’re itching to get in on the action, hit the source link for more details.

Neither the Samsung vs. Apple verdict nor the iPhone 5 can slow sales of the Galaxy S III

Posted: 03 Oct 2012 07:32 AM PDT

I never thought sales of the Galaxy S III would suffer dramatically, but honestly, I thought that they would have slowed right after the Apple vs. Samsung verdict and right after the announcement of the iPhone 5, but neither did. If anything, they helped. The above chart is from Localytics, and it shows an average weekly growth of 9% from July 31 through October 1.

What’s most interesting is the two biggest spikes. The first one was a 16 percent jump during the period of August 21 to August 27 (Tuesday to Monday). On August 24, the verdict came down in the famous Apple vs. Samsung case, and you can clearly see it was the best week. The second example was during the period of September 11 to September 17, which showed 15 percent growth. It was on September 12 that Apple unveiled the new iPhone 5, but growth was the second biggest.

Interestingly enough, the worst week was just before the iPhone announcement, which showed no growth. I can only assume that consumers were waiting on the announcement. To me this proves that a lot of consumers that were holding off weren’t all that impressed. They ran to the store to get their new Galaxy S III creating the spike. Growth did slow a little after the iPhone hit stores, but when you consider they hit 14% during the first week, that’s still very good.
