Motorola Adds Global RAZR HD and RAZR i to Bootloader Unlock Program

Posted: 05 Oct 2012 01:51 PM PDT

In a move which I’m sure will make plenty of devs and flash-happy consumers elated, Motorola has extended their bootloader unlock program to a couple of their newest devices, the Motorola RAZR HD and Motorola RAZR i. The RAZR HD will be un-lockable in the flowing areas: Europe, Australia, South America and on Rogers in Canada. As for the RAZR i, it will be un-lockable “worldwide.”

Of course, the sad part is that consumers in the US can’t fully take advantage of this, but I suppose that’s where we point the finger to the US carriers, right?

Vic Gundotra uses Snapseed to post photo to Google+, but Snapseed isn’t available for Android yet

Posted: 05 Oct 2012 01:43 PM PDT

Google’s Senior Vice President of Engineering Vic Gundotra has been known to use Google products before they were released to the public. This time he was caught using Snapseed to post a picture to Google+. In case you’ve forgotten, Snapseed is a former iOS photo editing app that Google bought recently to compete with Instagram. So now that Snapseed is a Google product, Gundotra used Snapseed for Andr0id to upload a picture to Google+ a few days ago and share with the world. So what means is we’ll probably see the Snapseed for Android app will be going public very soon and when it does come out, there will probably be strong Google+ integration. Are you guys excited to use Snapseed?

Featured Play Store Newbie: Lines & Puzzles [Brain & Puzzle]

Posted: 05 Oct 2012 11:32 AM PDT

We recently featured Four in a Row HD +Riddles by Alberto Hernandez, and he just came out with another one called Lines and Puzzles. It’s a similar game but it’s based on Gomoku. In case you’re wondering what Gomoku is, it’s similar to Connect Four, but you need to get five in a row and pieces can be placed anywhere you want (non gravitational) as long as it’s on an intersecting line (like the picture above). Lines and Puzzles offers some variations like  3-in-line (tic-tac-toe), 4-in-line, or 5-in-line Freestyle Gomoku. You have your choice of themes which include wood, chalk, printed paper, Go-like (traditional Gomoku), or neon for boards up to 15 x 15.

You can play against the AI or against a friend, with your choice of six types of games: 3-in-line (3 x 3), 4-in-line (5 x 5), 5-in-line (7 x 7), 5-in-line (9 x 9), 5-in-line (11 x 11), or 5-in-line (15 x 15). Also just like Four in a Row HD, you can play what’s called riddles, which are partially played games. You are presented a game after a certain amount completed moves. It’s your job to win in less than the given amount of moves so it actually trains you to be a better player. There are over 100 riddles included with the Free version, and another 100 available via an in-app purchase. That in-app purchase will also get rid of the ads.

Features:

  • Nice artificial intelligence
  • Statistics
  • Unlimited undo
  • Phone and tablet support (from low-resolution to Full HD devices)
  • Portrait and landscape orientation
  • App to SD
  • Small memory footprint

Lines and Puzzles is free so check out the video below and hit one of the download links to get started.

Samsung Galaxy Note II update brings multi-window support

Posted: 05 Oct 2012 10:05 AM PDT

We previously reported that some Samsung Galaxy Note II’s didn’t have the advertised multi-window support, but an update that is rolling out today will fix that. This will allow Galaxy Note II owners to split the 5.5″ screen in half and run two android apps at the same time. The original Galaxy Note had a similar feature, but it was limited to only Samsung apps. This time around there is support for not only Samsung apps but some Google apps as well as select third party apps such as Twitter. This update is version XXALIJ1 and it also includes a new baseband version of Chrome. The Galaxy Note II will be available in the states later this month.

Could LG-E960 at FCC be the new LG Optimus Nexus?

Posted: 05 Oct 2012 09:47 AM PDT

Earlier this week we reported on news that Google was getting close to releasing a new Nexus device, consistent with apparent plans to release five such devices to celebrate the five year anniversary of Android. Possible candidates for Google’s next Nexus device include LG hardware, possibly an LG Optimus G based device. With that in mind, a new LG device passed through the FCC this week with model number LG-E960. Some are wondering whether this may be the next Google Nexus device even though the device is not consistent with the Optimus G specs.

According to the FCC filing, the LG-E960 is a tri-band GSM device. The filings only indicate bands consistent with AT&T, but not LTE bands. The lack of LTE seems to rule out the device being based on the Optimus G which does have LTE capability. The LG-E960 does include NFC, which may quickly be moving toward a minimum standard for decent hardware.

What do you think? Will we see the LG-E960 presented sometime this month as the latest Google Nexus device or is this something else about to be released by LG?

German court finds Motorola did not violate Microsoft app coding patent

Posted: 05 Oct 2012 09:17 AM PDT

The Mannheim Regional Court in Germany issued a ruling today in a case between Motorola and Microsoft, finding in favor of Motorola that they did not violate a Microsoft patent. The patent in question related to applications running on different devices without having to write separate code for each product. CNET notes this ruling comes less than a week after Microsoft won a round in which they have at least temporarily retained their ability to continue selling Xbox and Windows software in Germany while a proposed injunction is reviewed by the U.S. The cases demonstrate how momentum continues to shift back and forth in the seemingly endless array of patent disputes around the world.

Neither party has issued a statement concerning this latest ruling.

More details surface for the LG Optimus G Nexus

Posted: 05 Oct 2012 08:59 AM PDT

The other day we reported that not only will Google change the Nexus program, but that LG will definitely have a device dubbed the LG Optimus G Nexus. Then we had a hands-on report from a tipster who claims to have the device. Now MoDaCo posted some details of their own. According to them, the actual retail name hasn’t been decided yet, but it’s definitely based on the Optimus G although it won’t look the same.

It will definitely have Android 4.2, a 1280 x 768 True-HD IPS display, a quad-code Snapdragon S4 processsor, 2GB of RAM, 8MP camera, and a non-removable battery. You’re probably wondering about the storage, and apparently Google is going the Nexus 7 route and only offering 8GB and 16GB models. Just like the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 7, there won’t be a microSD slot. Now I know this is going to be a huge disappointment for most of you, but surveys show the average user doesn’t need more than 16GB of storage. By offering the 8GB version, it’s obvious Google is going to make that the aggressively priced version. If they come out with a $399 price tag (off contract), it will sell like hotcakes.
