Nexus 10 32GB sold out on Google Play Store

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 11:17 AM PST

We already told you that both models of the LG Nexus 4 sold out ridiculously fast on the Google Play Store, but it turns out that the 32GB Nexus 10 wasn’t far behind. The tablet is no longer available to purchase on the Play Store, with the listing now showing a invitation for potential purchasers to leave their email to be notified when it becomes available. Looks like you’ll have to settle for the 16GB model if you want to order a Nexus 10 today.

Of course, there’s no telling how long those will stay in stock now that 32GB models are all gone. At the time of this writing, 16GB Nexus 10s are still available for order from the Google Play Store, but that could all change very soon. Better pick one up quickly if you don’t want to be left out in the cold.

It’s pretty easy to see why the Nexus 10 is selling so quickly. It’s an affordable tablet with an excellent 10-inch screen displaying at 2560×1600 resolution. You really can’t beat that screen in terms of resolution on a tablet, and that stellar display is grouped with a dual-core Samsung Exynos 5250 processor clocked at 1.7GHz and 2GB of RAM. Also, the fact that the 32GB models were the ones to sell out first isn’t much of a surprise, as the Nexus 10 doesn’t come with a microSD slot for additional storage.

So, between the two different Nexus 4s and the two different Nexus 10s that launched today, only 16GB Nexus 10s are still available. As we said above, you better snatch those up while you can, because we have a feeling that it won’t be long before those are gone as well. Keep it tuned here to Android Community and we’ll let you know when 16GB Nexus 10 models are gone too!

Nexus 4 sells out in the US – in just under 24 minutes

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 09:41 AM PST

Today is the day that many were hoping to get their hands on, or at least purchase a shiny new LG Nexus 4 from the folks at Google. Available just about 40 minutes ago in the US was the LG Nexus 4 and the Samsung Nexus 10 tablets running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. We’re not sure if this is good news, or bad, but the LG Nexus 4 has already sold out in both 8 and 16GB options.

If you were looking to get your hands on the latest and greatest quad-core device from LG and Google — better luck next time. It looks like the anticipation and excitement for the device was far higher than Google expected, that or they’ll probably be adding it back to being “In Stock” later this week to keep the process and shipping going smoothly. The device is back to being listed as “coming soon” but doesn’t say sold out. So stay tuned.

This shows just how far Google still needs to go in terms of offering devices online in their own Play Store. Clearly 24 minutes for the 16GB model and only 26 minutes for the 8GB model wasn’t long enough. Either Google and LG didn’t have very many devices in stock — or these awesome smartphones are selling like hot cakes. In the UK earlier this morning the same situation appeared and they sold out in around 30 minutes too.

We heard multiple reports that the Play Store system went down, and many users were having issues adding the devices to their cart and actually purchasing the Nexus 4. For those that did, enjoy. For those that missed out don’t worry, as they’ll probably be back later today or by the end of the week. Don’t forget you can also get the LG Nexus 4 straight from T-Mobile too.

HTC DROID DNA wireless charging dock hands-on

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 09:23 AM PST

After all the leaks and rumors today HTC and Verizon silenced them all by officially announcing their new HTC DROID DNA. The phone is completed by a 5-inch 1080p HD display, quad-core processor, and basically everything we already knew based on leaks — but one we didn’t. Up on stage HTC announced that like the LG Nexus 4, the DROID DNA supports wireless charging right out of the box.

Yup, the HTC DROID DNA has wireless inductive charging built right into the smartphone and no user changes or battery door replacements are needed. Most likely this will be able to neatly charge wirelessly with the Google Nexus charger, as well as works great with the LG Wireless Charging dock from Verizon for $59.99 shown above. It is the Qi wireless charger standard here, which means those new Nokia chargers should work with it too.

This 5-inch 1920 x 1080p full HD smartphone running on a quad-core 1.5 GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, MHL out for streaming 1080p video and more also runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and supports full wireless charging. When we said HTC’s pulled out all the stops for this new smartphone, we meant it. We have the fastest mobile processor, highest resolution display, nearly the latest version of Google’s OS, and now wireless charging. Well done HTC!

For more details check out DNA hands-on in the timeline below. The dock being detailed and sold by Verizon Wireless isn’t actually made by HTC, and instead is a rather large platform based wireless charging dock by LG. The LG Dock will run users $59.99 and is compatible with the brand new HTC DROID DNA. Simply walk up and drop the phone right on the dock and you’re instantly charging. It’s a simple as that folks!

HTC DROID DNA hands-on and first impressions

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 09:09 AM PST

Today the folks from HTC and Verizon have announced their all new 5-inch 1080p smartphone in the HTC DROID DNA — and it’s gorgeous. They aren’t calling it a phablet, but we’re still inclined to do so considering the sheer size of the phone. We already know everything about this new flagship from HTC, and if not here’s our announcement post, so head on down past the break for additional details and our hands-on pictures and more.

Before we show you the beautiful and vivid display, lets talk about the specs. This is the all the latest mobile technology blend into one high end device in all aspects, except that small battery. HTC’s DROID DNA is equipped with a 5-inch 1920x1080p True HD Super LCD3 display which works amazing indoors, and out. A quad-core processor, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. HTC touts the screen tech being “50% brighter than the Samsung Galaxy S III” but we’ll have to wait and see once we get one in to review. This display is absolutely stunning and clearly the star of the show here.

PB130307-XL PB130304-XL PB130298-XL

Everything is crisp, sharp, and vibrant. Colors are extremely vivid and bright, the blacks are impressive and inky black, and we dare you to find a pixel on this ultra HD 1080p screen packing 440ppi. Viewing angles are great, as usual with HTC, and we have a feeling this will be an awesome performer outdoors too — a place where most mobile phones fail to be very usable.

Then you’ve got Qualcomm’s new and powerful 1.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2GB of RAM, Verizon 4G LTE, and 16GB of storage under the hood. Again they opted not to add a micro-SD card (I’m blaming Verizon) and then the battery is a bit of a bummer too being only 2020 mAh in size. With the Note II being the only real competition here and offering a 3,100 mAh battery, I’m at a loss for words as to why HTC chose this route. The screen probably takes up more space than they’d like. We’ll test battery in our full review coming soon.

Then to wrap up the rest of the specs we have an 8 megapixel rear camera with LED flash, as well as the usual HTC ImageChip for enhanced photo and video. You have 1080p video, 1080p video output with MHL, and can even take full 8 megapixel images while recording video with the tap of a button. The front camera is a first for Android, rocking an 88% wider ultra-wide 2.1 megapixel lens that can have four people in a single video call.

Then as usual we have Beats Audio, but this time around HTC’s added a built-in 2.25v dual dedicated amplifier for the headphones, and the stereo speakers. If you didn’t see any speaker grills on back that is because they are housed under the “Lamborghini inspired” grills on the sides of the smartphone as you can see in the image above. They are near the top so shouldn’t get covered by hands during use in landscape, or portrait.

Running on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and HTC’s new Sense 4+ everything is blazing fast as you can see in our video above. Jelly Beans improvements are clearly noticeable here in smoothness, even if Sense covers the look and feel. We really can’t stress enough how amazing this screen looks. It’s so crisp and vibrant it really is impressive. Do we need 440 ppi? Nah. Is it awesome? Yes, indeed! Overall our first impressions are rather favorable. The build quality is stunning as usual with HTC, the soft-touch polycarbonate back feels excellent in the hand and the weight doesn’t seem too bad either. We can’t fully test out things like battery life, or the new Beats audio sound quality and speaker grills in this setting — but stay tuned for our full review with all the details.

The brand new and gorgeous HTC DROID DNA is available for pre-order starting later today from Verizon Wireless, and will hit store shelves November 21st for $199 with a new 2-year contract. Who will be getting this over the Note II?

Nexus 10 and Nexus 4 now available at Google Play Store

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 08:56 AM PST

The wait is finally over – starting right this minute you can order both the Samsung Nexus 10 and the LG Nexus 4 from the Google Play Store. Google managed to get a lot of people excited with the announcements of these devices, so if you want one, you better act quick. Both devices come touting some solid specs, so either one would be worth a place in your tech collection.

Starting right off with the Nexus 4, you’ll have a 4.7-inch screen running at 1280×720 resolution. The phone comes equipped with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor clocked at 1.5GHz, 2GB of RAM, and an 8MP rear-facing camera. Google is offering 8GB Nexus 4 models for $299.00, while it’s also got a 16GB model on offer for $349.00. Be sure to check out our review of the Nexus 4 for more information on that bad boy.

Changing gears entirely and looking at the Nexus 10, Samsung’s new tablets comes sporting a 10-inch screen that’s running at a whopping 2560×1600 resolution. As if that weren’t good enough, it’s also packing a dual-core Samsung Exynos 5250 1.7GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 5MP rear-facing camera. The Nexus 10 will be a little more expensive than the Nexus 4, with the 16GB model running $399.00 and the 32GB model coming with a price tag of $499.00. Need to know more? You’re in luck, because we happen to have a review of the Nexus 10 as well.

One of the most important things about both of these devices is that they both will be running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean out of the box. That means an all-new version of Android to go along with your shiny new Nexus. Follow the links below to get to the store pages for each device. Hopefully you manage to snag one before they all sell out!

Vuzix Smart Glasses M100 to challenge Google Glass in 2013

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 08:54 AM PST

Every now and then, something comes out and Google’s Project Glass that gets everyone excited again. Well, move over Google, because Vuzix has just shown off its own Project Glass competitor that’s expected hit the market in 2013. Even cooler, the M100 device is based on Android Ice Cream Sandwich. The best way to describe the look of the device is to compare it to an oversized Bluetooth headset.

The device features a virtual display eyepiece, integrated WiFi and Bluetooth, a 720p HD camera, and head-tracking sensors. It works with Android smartphones on all aspects of augmented reality. These apps can be hands-free calling, photography, web browsing, and SMS messaging, as well as visual navigation using services. Basically, it works with almost any smartphone app that can output to an external display. It also has a 3-axis head tracker that is paired with a gyroscope, GPS, and a digital compass. It also comes with an earpiece and a noise canceling mic for recognizing voice commands.

The device displays in WQVGA resolution with a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. It gives the impression of looking at a 4-inch screen at a distance of about 14 inches. It comes with 2,000 nits of brightness, which is great for looking at the screen while outdoors in a sunny setting. The device works with either the left or right eye, so you can use it however you are comfortable.

The camera shoots widescreen video and images at 1280 x 720 resolution. The device runs a custom version of Android 4.0 on a 1GHz OMAP4430 processor with 1GB of RAM and 4GB of flash storage. It connects through WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth.

The battery looks to be good for about 8hrs of hands-free use or two hours of use with the screen on. If you were to use the hands free screen and the camera at the same time, the battery would only be able to run for about an hour. We are not sure how this compares to the battery life in Google’s Project Glass, as Google has been silent on the matter thus far.

Exact pricing and availability for the Vuzix M100 haven't been revealed yet, but hopefully we should find out soon. A developers kit can purchased now for $999. This includes the Windows-based emulator, sample code, access to a private coders portal with assistance from Vuzix, and the promise of an early production M100 when available. The software elements of the bundle are expected to available in December of this year.

HTC DROID DNA unveiled: 5-inch 1080p display and 1.5 GHz quad-core coming November 21

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 08:14 AM PST

Today HTC and Verizon have just announced their newest smartphone to grace their network and the growing phablet trend. That being the often rumored and leaked daily HTC DROID DNA. This new 5-inch 1080p smartphone looks quite impressive, but we already knew just about all the specs thanks to countless leaks. This is HTC’s latest innovation and clearly their flagship smartphone. Read on for full details.

Today in NYC HTC has just announced the new DROID DNA. We can see now why Verizon passed on the HTC One X, and instead opted or for what appears to be the exclusive US carrier of this new smartphone. Sadly we wish this awesome handset would reach all carriers, but that won’t be the case like the Galaxy Note II. HTC’s tossed together some of the best technology in all aspects of mobile to create one stellar handset. All the leaks were accurate and here’s the official details of the all new HTC DROID DNA.

The DROID DNA works with the first of its kind 5-inch 1920 x 1080p full HD SLCD3 display that absolutely looks gorgeous. That brings the pixel per inch up to 440, making this way higher than anything else to date and out-retina’s Apple by a long shot. Under the hood is another brand new option, that being Qualcomm’s 1.5 Ghz Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor. HTC’s confirmed 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage but sadly no micro-SD slot. This is becoming a theme, leaving out the micro-SD slot, and I’m not a fan. We get the the usual impressive 8 megapixel camera and HTC Imagesense chip, then they’ve added a wide-angle front camera. The widest front shooter on any smartphone able to fit 4 users in a video call. And the last bit of details is a 2,020 mAh battery. This is another fail by HTC. The original Galaxy Note was 2500 and still not big enough, now the Note II is 3,100. HTC won’t win in that department. HTC’s taking it to Motorola by stating, “We’ve built the ultimate DROID.”

The phone is actually not much wider than the HTC One X, and instead just gets a little taller so it won’t be so difficult to hold in your hand like some other phablets. The sides actually house the speaker grills, and the dual-amp design gives an additional built-in 2.55v amp for headphones, and external speakers. The other star of the show here is of course Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, although we have HTC’s usual Sense UI 4+ on top. We’ll be digging into Android 4.1 with all the Sense + changes, taking a look at the hardware, and getting plenty of hands-on video and pictures shortly so stay tuned for our initial thoughts and first impressions.

HTC’s pulled out all the stops with the DROID DNA, but we’ll have to wait and see if this can pull them out of their current slump. This phone looks absolutely stunning so we can’t wait to get our hands on it for a full review. Sadly we aren’t happy about the lack of SD, and that small battery. Good news is pre-orders are available starting today, with the device hitting the streets November 21st for $199. Video coming soon!

Manual install of Android 4.2 for Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7 available

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 08:07 AM PST

Google is pushing Android 4.2 Jelly Bean to Nexus owners via an over-the-air update, but if you are impatient, there are ways to get it sooner. The firmware for the GSM version of the Galaxy Nexus (so not Verizon’s LTE-equipped version) is available for download on Google’s servers. The v4.2 ROM for the Nexus 7 is also available.

For the Galaxy Nexus, you can download the “takju" ROM to get the new OS on your device. You can download that manually, which is a little harder. You can also use ClockworkMod's ROM Manager, which is a free app download from Google Play. Either way, this will allow you to get the latest firmware on the Galaxy Nexus without waiting for the OTA update.

For the Nexus 7, the process is pretty similar. You will need to download the Jelly Bean update ZIP. You will need install it manually or use the ROM Manager app.

If that sounds like more than you are willing to deal with, then you shall have to be patient and wait for the official OTA update from Google. The wait should not be long, as we expect the rollout to happen in the next couple of day.

Google readies indoor maps on Android for holiday shopping season

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 07:29 AM PST

Black Friday and the holiday shopping season are right around the corner. This means its time to start planning where you are going to find your deals, and the quickest ways to get yourself in the store, to the items you want, and on to the next place to get your deals. Google is ready to help, with indoor Google Maps of select retailers that will help you get in, get the deals, and get out.

All you need to do is zoom in on participating retailers, and you will be able to see the interior map of the building. Once you get all the way zoomed in, you will see a floor plan with labels that will help you find what you need. For some locations, Google even has indoor walking directions which will help you get from where you are to where you need to be quickly.

Some stores included are many local malls and select Best Buy, Nordstrom, Macy's, Bloomingdale's, Harrod's, Selfridges, John Lewis and other stores. Of course, if this is successful Google could add more stores going forward. Maybe we will see a time where every store is mapped, which would be quite convenient.

The update for Google Maps is available from Google Play. Of course, the update is free, as you would expect. If you are looking to make your holiday shopping a little easier, especially with the insanity of black friday right around the corner, get this new version of Google Maps, and you might find out that this could be the easiest holiday shopping season you’ve ever had.

GoPro finally releases an Android app

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 06:51 AM PST

GoPro, the popular action camera, has finally releases an Android app that works with its cameras. An iOS app has been available for the GoPro for quite some time, but GoPro is finally bringing one to Android. This allows users to control their GoPro cameras from their Android devices, which helps them keep the action going without removing the camera from whatever part of their body its attached to.

GoPro took to Twitter to announce the launch of the new app. GoPro announced that the app offers “full control of camera settings and remote viewfinder/preview.” You can also view daily highlight clips, and change to different modes right from the app.

There are some limitations to the app, that may keep many GoPro and Android users out in the cold. First, the only model of the camera’s currently supported by the app is the Hero2. Support for the new Hero3 is coming soon, but the original Hero HD is not supported. Hero2 users will also need to own a GoPro WiFi BacPac to use the remote functionality. The app only supports devices running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

If you’re still recording your extreme action using an original GoPro, now might be the best time to upgrade. With the Hero3 coming soon, you should be able to grab a Hero2 for relatively cheap. The app is available for free on Google Play.

YouTube makes it easier to watch videos on your TV using Android

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 06:32 AM PST

YouTube has just announced a new update that makes it easy to pair your smartphone with a Google TV. This is designed to create a seamless experience where users can select a YouTube video on their phone and be watching it on their TV in a matter of seconds. It essentially turns your Android smartphone into a YouTube remote control for watching videos.

With this update, you can pause, scroll, and skip videos from your phone while you watch Gangnam Style over and over again. You can use your phone to find the next video without breaking the stride of your current video. This should make watching YouTube on your TV much more pleasant.

Another pretty slick thing this update adds is the ability to connect multiple devices so your friends can add videos to the upcoming playlist. This lets everyone get in on the action, and could make for some interesting times. Everyone with an Android device can add their preferences, which should make things pretty fun.

YouTube says it plans to add this feature to more devices going forward, so this seems to be only the beginning for this awesome feature. Google tried to work out something like this with the Nexus Q, but it did not take off. Hopefully, users not needing to purchase a special device to make this happen will cause the feature to take off more this time. Time will tell if this feature is a success for YouTube or a feature that falls by the wayside.

Nexus 4 sells out in UK in 30 minutes as Google Play annoys buyers

Posted: 13 Nov 2012 05:54 AM PST

The Nexus 4 went on sale in Europe and Australia, and it sold out in a matter of minutes, and left customers rather angry. Buyers had a hard time resisting the incredible unsubsidized price of the device, and thus, they came out in droves to grab one. Google, apparently, could not keep up with the demand for the device, and ran out quickly. This, of course, led to the site spitting out all kinds of errors, which led to some frustrated potential buyers.

The store was apparently having all kinds of issues. In some cases, the issues came from the shopping cart, where a user would add the device, and by the time they got to the checkout stage, the device would not be there anymore. By the time many would-be buyers got the website to work, Google’s stock was depleted and the device was no longer available.

In the UK, both the 8GB and 16GB version of the phone are listed as “Notify Me” rather than offering the ability to purchase a phone. All three version of the Nexus 7 are in stock, and the website seems to working to order those. Nexus 10 tablets are still in stock in the 16GB version, but the 32GB version is sold out.

Clearly, selling out is good for Google, but we are not sure just how big of a success it actually is. We know they sold out incredibly fast, so there is clearly some demand for the device, but we do not know how many devices Goole actually made available for the initial launch. Google may have ended up with more angry potential buyers than people who actually ended up with a device in their possession.

Galaxy Nexus reportedly getting Android 4.2 update too

Posted: 12 Nov 2012 09:24 PM PST

Google’s lineup of Nexus devices are just a few hours away from finally being available to purchase right on the Google Play Store. Devices that will all come with the new and improved Android 4.2 Jelly Bean out of the box. Earlier tonight we reported the final “shipping version” of 4.2 JB was rolling out to the Nexus 4 and 10, but now multiple reports are stating the GSM Galaxy Nexus is also enjoying the same treatment.

And this is why we buy Nexus devices folks. Except for those on Verizon of course. The image above is one lucky users HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus from the Google Play Store that has already received the over the air update to android 4.2 Jelly Bean this evening. With it bringing the new Photo Sphere camera and improved user interface, gesture keyboard typing, quick settings and more.

For full details on what to expect from the Android 4.2 JB update on your Galaxy Nexus, or when you receive your shiny new Nexus 4 or 10 later this week you’ll want to check out our what’s new with 4.2 post. You’ll also want to take a peek at our LG Nexus 4 Review, followed by our Samsung Nexus 10 Review for a better idea of what to expect with these awesome new devices straight from Google.

The new Nexi are available on the Google Play Store right this minute — in Australia — and will probably be appearing over the next few hours as available to purchase for those in the US. Be prepared to hit F5 a few times and snag one before they sell out. Earlier today Google confirmed the 4.2 update was rolling out for the Nexus and 10, but according to Android Police the Galaxy Nexus is getting it too. Next up is the Nexus 7, which will probably start seeing the OTA update within the next 24-48 hours. Who’s excited for Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, gesture typing, photo sphere, and of course multiple user accounts? I am!

Google adds official Nexus 4 bumper case to Play Store for $20

Posted: 12 Nov 2012 07:22 PM PST

In case you guys didn’t remember, the brand new LG Nexus 4 will be available starting tomorrow direct from Google in the Play Store. The 4.7-inch quad-core powered Android 4.2 Jelly Bean smartphone is quite excellent — and now Google’s already offering accessories for the device. Head on past the break for more information.

The LG Nexus 4, Samsung Nexus 10, and the 32GB Nexus 7 tablets will all be available for purchase starting tomorrow, November 13th from Google. While you still can’t actually purchase the Nexus 4, Google’s already added the first (of hopefully many) accessories for their new flagship smartphone.

The Nexus 4 Bumper Case (pictured above) has made its way to the Play Store this evening — and is listed as coming soon. Once the devices actually go up for sale later tonight or tomorrow morning you’ll be able to get a neat little case to protect your shiny new Nexus. It comes at a price premium though.

Google’s gives essentially zero details about the case — or what it’s constructed out of — and only mentions that it’s black and weights basically nothing. The bumper case keeps the same two-tone design element as the smartphone, and could possibly come in additional colors at a later date. Now we’re just hoping they’ll also add a few official desk or car docks too. Stay tuned for more details!

Android 4.2 update rolling out for Nexus 4 and 10 with new features

Posted: 12 Nov 2012 07:03 PM PST

Tomorrow is a big day for Google, with the official release date of their brand new set of Android devices. Those being the popular LG Nexus 4 smartphone, Samsung Nexus 10 tablet, and of course the wildly popular and already available Nexus 7. Today Google has just confirmed that the final shipping version of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean is rolling out as we speak. We have a feeling the Nexus 7 will be enjoying the same come tomorrow once it goes on sale.

We’ve reviewed all three of these awesome Nexus devices, and the Nexus 10 sadly did not yet have multi-user accounts that were announced with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean back in October. Neither had the lockscreen widgets yet either. Today however the update is rolling out starting tonight bringing both awesome new features to these devices.

Basically we’ve still not been able to enjoy the new multi-user accounts or lockscreen widgets in Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, as those features weren’t yet available. What this means is for all you eager Android fans waiting to see how Google’s implemented these new features, stay tuned as we’ll be getting some hands-on video as soon as the updates arrive here at Android Community.

Aside from all the new features we’ve already seen with the Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 Reviews linked to below — here’s what we can expect with the final version of Android 4.2 that is rolling out to devices starting today:

Lock screen widgets: Customize your lock screen with widgets that let you see your calendar and email, recognize music with Sound Search and more. Third-party developers can make widgets, too. Capture the moment by unlocking directly to your camera for quick photos.
Multi-user support: Share your tablet with friends and family, with separate customizable spaces for each person. Just turn on your tablet and tap your photo to sign in to your own homescreen, apps, email, photos and storage. Customizing your home screen is easy. Choose a wallpaper, add favorite apps and games from Google Play, create folders and arrange beautiful widgets just the way you like them – it's as easy as drag and drop.

Once the updates start arriving for all devices we’ll be sure to update with additional details. For those purchasing the Nexus 4 or 10 tomorrow — expect a neat and crisp final version of Android 4.2 waiting for you in an over the air update on first boot. Hopefully the same appears for the Nexus 7 tomorrow. Enjoy!

HTC One X+ and VX head to AT&T on the 16th, pre-order tomorrow

Posted: 12 Nov 2012 04:14 PM PST

Today the folks from AT&T have announced two impressive new smartphones from HTC will be arriving on their network come November 16th. The new and improved 1.7 GHz quad-core HTC One X+, as well as the HTC One VX will both be available on the 16th, with pre-orders starting tomorrow. Head down past the break for additional details.

Early last month HTC and AT&T announced both devices, and we quickly were able to snag some HTC One X+ hands-on pictures for your viewing pleasure. You should know plenty about these already, but if not here’s the details. The One X+ is the same as the original AT&T One X, only this time around it gets the NVIDIA quad-core Tegra 3 like the international model — only it’s been improved. the One X+ is running a 1.7 GHz quad-core, and now supports full 4G LTE. You’ll still get 1GB of RAM, but they’ve added an option for up to 64GB of storage as well. This being a huge plus considering the X doesn’t have expandable storage.

You’ll still enjoy the same 4.7-inch 1280x720p HD SLCD2 display, 8 megapixel camera, front shooter, and that awesome design with Beats Audio included. One major improvement is HTC’s updated this to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and HTC Sense UI 4+. The new and improved quad-core HTC One X+ will run you $199.99 with a new 2-year contract. Here’s a quick video from HTC themselves:

Then HTC’s introduced another budget handset like their One V earlier this year, only this also runs on AT&T’s 4G LTE network and has some rather nice improvements as well. The new HTC One VX will only cost you $49.99 for a nearly top end phone. Everything about it screams perfection aside from the qHD display. You’ll get a large 4.5-inch screen, but sadly only 540 x 960 resolution. Everything else is great. That includes a 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, 1GB of RAM, and a few cameras. So what gives? It drops down to a 5 megapixel rear camera and only VGA front, as well as being shipped with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, instead of Jelly Bean.

Overall both these devices are pretty impressive. The One X didn’t really need to improve too much, but now that it has this makes it even better. The VX on the other hand is probably the best budget device on AT&T, being just $49, and easily beats out T-Mobile’s $79 LG Optimus L9 with similar specs.

Pre-order either of these new phones starting tomorrow, and expect them to ship and be available in-stores starting November 16th. Stay tuned right here because tomorrow we’ll have all the details on Verizon’s new HTC DROID DNA 5-inch 1080p smartphone too.

Samsung Galaxy Stratosphere II officially confirmed for Verizon

Posted: 12 Nov 2012 01:45 PM PST

After hearing plenty of rumors about it, the Samsung Galaxy Stratosphere II has finally been confirmed for a Verizon launch. Verizon announced the phone today in a News Center post, revealing that it will be available “in the coming weeks.” Unfortunately, Verizon didn’t get anymore specific than that, so we don’t have an exact launch date for the Stratosphere II just yet.

The Stratosphere II will come running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box, so those who pick this up will be missing out on Jelly Bean. It features a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, and that slide out QWERTY keyboard we’ve seen plenty of times in the lead-up to its reveal. It also comes equipped with NFC capabilities, meaning that you can use S Beam with this bad boy.

Verizon and Samsung are touting the Stratosphere II as a business phone. It’s a global ready device that features support for VPN and comes packing things like Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and AES 256-bit encryption to keep information on lock down and secure. Verizon’s post doesn’t delve too much into the Startosphere II’s hardware, which suggests that the phone’s specs aren’t anything to write home about.

Nonetheless, if you think the Stratosphere II might be the phone for you, you’ll be able to pick it up from either Verizon’s website or its stores for $129.99. That’s a pretty manageable price, but be warned that you’ll have to sign a two-year contract and take advantage of a $50 mail-in rebate in order to get the Stratosphere II down to $130. Keep an ear to Android Community, as we’ll update you once we know more about the Samsung Galaxy Stratosphere II!

XDA developers discover S Memo saves passwords in plain text

Posted: 12 Nov 2012 01:05 PM PST

If you use S Memo and happen to have a rooted device, you might want to pay attention to this next bit of news: one XDA Developers Forum member has discovered that S Memo stores Google user names and passwords in plain text. He happened upon this while he was going through his SQLite files on his Samsung Galaxy S III, and promptly took to the Developers Forum to talk about it. Another user, one ViViDboarder, replied saying that those files can only be viewed if the device is rooted and would otherwise be inaccessible.

So, those who haven’t rooted their devices can breathe a sigh of relief, as this is only an issue for those who have rooted their Samsung handset. It seems that rooted users make up a pretty large subset of all Android users though, so there’s still plenty of people who could be affected by this security issue. This could potentially lead to root apps gaining access to these files and making off with the information, though ViViDboarder says that would be difficult “without asking for root or cracking root itself.”

Be that as it may, this is still a pretty scary discovery. We’ve always known that there are some security risks that go along with rooting your phone, but this just serves as reinforcement that those who root their device need to tread carefully. That goes for installing root apps too – if you don’t check out the app yourself before installing, it could lead to some pretty major headaches.

It’s also kind of alarming that S Memo doesn’t encrypt this information, but it makes at least some sense if Samsung’s expectation is that most users aren’t going to root their phones. In any case, it seems like that’s the kind of information that should be encrypted, even if it is inaccessible on non-rooted devices. Be sure to have a look at the full thread over at the XDA Developers Forum for more information!

Samsung hits Apple with mobile processor price increase

Posted: 12 Nov 2012 12:09 PM PST

With Samsung and Apple currently waging a patent battle across the globe, it’s easy to understand that the business deals between the two companies are a little shaky at the moment. Apple has been slowly trying to replace Samsung as a supplier of its parts for iDevices, but now Samsung is fighting back. A new report from MarketWatch claims that Samsung is charging Apple a 20% premium for its mobile processor chips these days.

MarketWatch’s source – who is reportedly “familiar with negotiations” between the companies – claims that at first, Apple rejected the price increase. When the iPhone maker couldn’t find another supplier, however, it was forced to go along with Samsung’s boost in price. Apple has a contract with Samsung that lasts until 2014, so Samsung stands to make a fair bit of money from this hike.

While surges and declines in price are commonplace in the business world, we have a feeling that this has something to do with Apple’s recent court win over Samsung. There are a lot of people out there who think that Apple should have never taken Samsung to court and disagree with the ruling, and you can bet that Samsung counts itself among that group. The jury in the case declared that Samsung should pay Apple more than $1 billion, so it kind of goes without saying that there’s some bad blood between the two.

Whatever the reason behind this price hike, it’s apparently been implemented and now Apple is stuck paying a 20% premium. This probably won’t be the last time we hear of Samsung trying to get back at Apple (if that is indeed what it’s doing), so keep it tuned here to Android Community to hear more about Apple and Samsung’s ongoing scuffle.
