Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 Jelly Bean update arrives for some

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 02:45 PM PST

We have some good news for many of you Samsung Galaxy Tab owners this holiday season. It looks like Samsung has finished putting their finishing touches on Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean for the Galaxy Tab 2. New reports are coming in that the Tab 2 7-inch has started receiving the update to Jelly Bean in multiple regions over the past few days. What’s even better is how similar it looks to the Nexus 7 now.

For now this appears to only be for branded Galaxy Tab 2 7-inch models, and none in the US yet. Usually we see updates for WiFi editions first but it’s been confirmed to be rolling out in Italy, Greece, Spain, Germany, Romania and Slovenia for Vodafone customers. Maybe they’re starting small before pushing out to major regions. The screenshots below look promising complete with expandable notifications and all.

According to SamMobile the update is arriving as we speak over the air, as well as the usual Samsung Kies software for those who’d rather not wait. Looking at the screenshots provided Samsung has blended their smartphone TouchWiz UX in with how Google’s released Jelly Bean for the Nexus 7. The end result is a fine blend that actually looks quite neat.

I’ve never been the biggest fan of TouchWiz for tablets, but this time around Samsung appears to have done an excellent job blending their idea of Android with what Google has put in place regarding the user interface. Hopefully more Galaxy Tabs like the 10-inch model, as well as older 7.7 Tabs and more all get the same treatment fairly soon. More details on the Galaxy Tab 2 7-inch fan be found below. If you’re in one of those locations with a Vodafone Tab 2 give the update a try today.

Samsung projected to ship 61.5 million smartphones in Q4

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 02:29 PM PST

The next few months will be big for a lot of companies, with Black Friday kicking off the holiday shopping season today. A lot of companies stand to make a lot of money from customers ready to hand over their cash, and it looks like Samsung will be one of these businesses benefiting from the holiday rush. A new projection from UBS pegs the Android manufacturer with a potential 61.5 million smartphone shipments during Q4.

That’s definitely a lot of smartphones, and UBS says that it could rise as high 63 million shipments depending on sell-through numbers. Samsung will achieve that number of shipments with the help of the Galaxy Note II and the Galaxy S III. Samsung is projected to ship 15 million Galaxy S IIIs in Q4, which isn’t too shabby for a phone that launched way back in May.

While the Galaxy S III is projected to do particularly well in Q4, it’s the Galaxy Note II that we should all be paying attention to. UBS originally predicted that Samsung would ship 5 million Note IIs in Q4, but given the popularity of the phone, it has raised that prediction to 7 million. Considering how good the Note II is, we wouldn’t be surprised to see the phone meet those shipment expectations.

In fact, we’re not all that surprised to hear that UBS is expecting Samsung to have such a great quarter. To some folks out there, Samsung is the Android manufacturer, and the company has released a number of incredibly popular devices throughout the year. We’ll be interested to see how the holiday shopping season treats ol’ Sammy, so keep checking back with us for more details.

Samsung launches SCH-W2013 dual-screen flip phone

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 01:27 PM PST

Our job here at Android Community brings us into contact with a bunch of strange devices, and today is no exception. Say hello to the new Samsung SCH-W2013, a dual-screen flip phone that’s said to cost quite a bit of money. The new phone launched on China Telecom today and seems to be something of a predecessor to last year’s SCH-W999.

Indeed, there are quite a few similarities between the two devices, most notably the dual-screen setup. Both screens are 3.7-inch displays with 800×480 resolution, so aside from the fact that there are two of them, they aren’t very impressive by today’s smartphone standards. Regardless of the underwhelming screen specs, this phone has got some pretty big star power backing it up, with Samsung recruiting Jackie Chan to help promote the new device. Check out the promotional shot featuring Chan’s seemingly ageless mug below.

Engadget says the price of this bad boy is estimated to come in somewhere between ¥18,000 and ¥20,000 – in US dollars, that’s about $2,900 on the low end and $3,200 on the high end. That’s definitely a lot of money for a phone, but remember that the W999 wasn’t exactly cheap either. Seems like those who want to take this phone home will need to plop down a hefty amount of cash first.

Luckily, the innards are pretty solid, with a quad-core processor clocked at 1.4GHz, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of internal storage. That storage can be expanded thanks to the included microSD slot, and the W2013 also features a 8MP rear-facing camera coupled with a 1.9MP front-facing snapper. Finally, the phone is powered by a 1,850mAh battery and comes running Android 4.0 out of the box. Those specs certainly aren’t terrible, but can you imagine ever paying nearly $3,000 for a phone? Let us know in the comments down below, and keep it tuned here to Android Community for more on this strange new device.

Judge allows Samsung to peek in on HTC and Apple’s patent deal

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 12:57 PM PST

In case you haven’t been following along, Samsung and Apple have been fighting in court quite a bit this year. Earlier this month Apple and HTC settled their differences and came up with a 10-year agreement deal. While this is good for HTC, Samsung has still been getting beat up pretty bad by those Cupertino lawyers but recently a Judge has thrown them a bone in regards to the HTC deal. Read on for more details.

Currently we don’t know any details regarding Apple and HTC’s settlement deal, but that could soon be changing. While the public might not hear all the details, Samsung has been granted access and HTC and Apple will have to give the agreement information over to Samsung. Originally Samsung CEO’s stated they had no intentions of settling with Apple, but we think they might be changing directions.

The Judge recently updated the ruling, stating that future and new devices can be added to this ongoing lawsuit throughout 2014. That’s pretty bad news for Samsung considering they already owe Apple $1 billion from the ruling. In light of that new change, it’s possible that Samsung and Apple might soon be coming to their own agreement too.

The settlement between HTC and Apple is a 10-year deal that covers all current AND future patents, from both companies. Keeping them out of each others way for a while. Samsung requested to see the information and has been granted that wish. Samsung also wants to know if Apple included "unique" patents that it does not offer to other companies in the deal. In the end Samsung is hoping the deal will make Apple’s patents look like they are only worth a certain amount, something they can use to get that $1 billion bill they owe Apple lowered a bit. Then hopefully this could even lead to their own settlement, but that is doubtful. The next injunction hearing between Apple and Samsung is early December, so get ready for more crazy lawyer talk. Who wants to play Deal or no Deal?

T-Mobile blows through Nexus 4 online stock in mere hours

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 11:48 AM PST

It isn’t exactly a secret that the Nexus 4 is one hard phone to find, at least if you’re looking for it on the Google Play Store. The phone sold out in minutes once it launched on Google Play Store, and since then, it’s been nothing but broken hearts and full wallets. Google thought placing a link to T-Mobile’s online Nexus 4 listing would help the situation, but it looks like that was only a temporarily solution to an ongoing problem.

That’s because T-Mobile‘s online listing for the Nexus 4 now says the phone is out of stock, just a few hours after the link went live on the Google Play Store. Android Police points out that you might still be able to find a Nexus 4 at T-Mobile’s retail stores, but the fact that they sold out so fast online probably means that it won’t be long before the phones available at retail stores are gone too.

Then we’ll be back to waiting for the Nexus 4 listing on the Play Store to go from “sold out” to “in stock,” which, considering the stock issues Google has been dealing with since launch, could be a while down the road. The Nexus 4 sold out on the Google Play Store in just 24 minutes, and in that short span of time, Google even ended up taking more orders than it could fulfill. Some of those who got an order in at the last minute were sent an email that said it would take three more weeks for their phone to ship out.

Android fans are apparently willing to pay a premium to get their hands on a Nexus 4 at this point. If you’re going through T-Mobile, the 16GB Nexus 4 will cost $499 off contract, while signing a two-year commitment will bring the price down to $200. Google sells (or rather sold) the 8GB Nexus 4 for $300 and the 16GB version for $350 on the Play Store, so there’s a pretty significant markup on the device over at T-Mobile. Keep it here at Android Community, as we’ll let you know if anything changes with the Nexus 4′s stock situation!

HTC DROID DNA gets unlocked without HTCdev

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 11:42 AM PST

Some good news appeared over the holiday break for all you DROID DNA owners. While everyone was enjoying turkey, mashed potatoes and anything else those awesome Android developers were as usual, hard at work. The guys from @TeamAndIRC managed to unlock the brand new Verizon HTC DROID DNA. The important thing here is that they’ve done this without HTC’s help.

For those that aren’t familiar, unlocking a device allows us to do all sorts of things once a certain level of access is achieved. Rooting, custom ROM’s, kernel tweaks for oveclocking, and everything else we love in the world of custom Android. While the DNA isn’t there quite yet, this is a good sign. HTC has their own bootloader unlock program at HTCdev.com but sadly Verizon doesn’t like to participate in those activities. So after the DNA was found to be unlockable HTC removed the option from the site.

Today Justin Case and TeamAndIRC managed to unlock the DROID DNA without HTCdev, and without the help from HTC. There’s even better news too. The exploit being used apparently should work on all HTC phones that aren’t supported by HTCdev at this point. This is great news for all HTC owners, not just the new DROID DNA. While this isn’t a fully unlocked bootloader, it’s great progress.

Update: To clarify it will still require HTCdev, but this unlock re-enables the device to work on HTCdev. It will still be a ways from custom ROM’s, but it’s a start.

According to the reports this is a full unlock and gives users complete access through recovery. That means in no time flat we’ll be able to flash some CyanogenMod 10 on the DROID DNA, and then surely overclock kernels will be coming so we can crank that 1.5 GHz quad-core processor up to even faster speeds. For now the method is not being revealed or shared, but soon enough they’ll drop all the details and probably provide a 1-click method for most HTC smartphones. Stay tuned for more details.
