Rdio rolls out totally redesigned Android app

Posted: 27 Nov 2012 02:25 PM PST

Rdio today announced a new version of its Android and iOS application, both of which are complete redesigns of the existing client. Available immediately, the streaming music service apps feature a number of new features poured on top of a faster, sleeker look.

Details include:

  • A new look and feel — The latest update includes design elements similar to our desktop and web experience: clean and minimal.
  • New side-bar navigation — A new navigation panel pops open on the left side of the app to bring you to Your Music, Settings, Playlists, and other features.
  • Remote control — The app will notify you if "Rdio is playing elsewhere." Pause, skip, or play a station from wherever you are, or click "Play Here Instead" and your mobile device will pick up right where your laptop left off.
  • Infinite scroll — You'll never run out of new music to explore. Rdio loads more content as you scroll through Heavy Rotation, Top Charts, and New Releases.

Keep in mind that while the Android app itself is free, a monthly subscription of $9.99 is required to take advantage of the service.

Boot your Nook Color and Nook Tablet to Android 4.1 with N2A microSD

Posted: 27 Nov 2012 01:22 PM PST

Have a Nook Color or Nook Tablet and find yourself envying those with more full-blown Android tablets? Take things into your own hands with the latest release from the fellows over at Nook 2 Android. It’s a lesser known fact among its general user base that the devices run Android at their core. Even less apparent to the B&N crowd is that you can make those tablets boot and run a stock Android experience.

Previously limited to the Android 2.3 Gingerbread experience, Nook 2 Android (N2A) microSD cards now allow the aforementioned devices to boot directly to the same Android 4.1 Jelly Bean experience that comes with phones and tablets.  Specifically, this is a Cyanogenmod port of Android, or the preferred stock UI and features that many modders prefer to employ. In a nutshell, these cards turn the e-readers/tablets into Android tablets, complete with widgets and access to Google Play.

If you own one of these two devices and wish to get in on the standard Android love, there are a number of options at your disposal. On one hand you can buy a microSD card already loaded with the bootable OS, with capacities ranging from 8GB ($29.99) up to 64GB ($69.99). On the other hand, you can opt for the $19.99 method which lets you download and install the image on your existing microSD cards. Note that not all cards and capacities may be supported. Whichever route you go, the process of booting to Android 4.1 is not far off!

One of our absolute favorite things about Android is the fact that you can bend and tweak the platform to your needs.  Sure, there’s rooting and modding for deep level personalization, but that stuff does not always concern the everyman user.

Google Chrome to align versions across all platforms by early 2013

Posted: 27 Nov 2012 10:49 AM PST

In a Google+ post by the Chrome team, we should hopefully be seeing an alignment of all Chrome versions – including Android – by early next year:

Q. Chrome for Android is still at v18, while regular Chrome is at v23. When will Chrome for Android catch up?

A. Soon! We expect an update to Chrome for Android starting with a developer update to happen before the end of the year, and we're actively working towards aligning releases across all platforms, including Android, starting early next year.

(emphasis ours)

So, if you’re tired of your mobile Chrome being ages behind your desktop version, then a little bit of patience *should* pay off. Hopefully, we’ll start seeing some other features align across platforms as well soon enough.

You can download Chrome for Android via this link to the Play Store.

Nexus 4 available again through T-Mobile website

Posted: 27 Nov 2012 10:41 AM PST

T-Mobile is once again selling the Nexus 4 on their website. The carrier quickly ran out after putting it up on their page just days ago, but is now back, hopefully with a bit more supply. The device is still $199 on a new 2-year contract.

The device is also heading back up for sale through the Google Play Store shortly, as Google appears to be getting more stock in to satisfy the crazy demand. The device through T-Mobile is the 16GB, which sells for $349 through the Play Store. Also, don’t forget that Android 4.2.1 is rolling out for these devices, which is an added plus for those getting the Nexus 4.

E FUN debuts $129 Nextbook Premium 7SE-GP with Google Play access

Posted: 27 Nov 2012 10:39 AM PST

For all the appeal that comes with a $100-$150 Android tablet, experienced users are often quick to point out the omissions and holes. One particular detail that often comes up is the lack of Google Play and the growing library of apps. E FUN is no stranger to this as they have announced a number of devices over time, all of which are inexpensive options that don’t have Google Play. That is not the case with the new 7-inch model, the Nextbook Premium 7SE-GP

Android 4.2.1 OTA update rolling out for Nexus 4 and Nexus 10

Posted: 27 Nov 2012 09:35 AM PST

Thank goodness for the folks over at XDA. According to 2 separate (yet equal?) threads, we’re seeing OTA updates coming to both the Nexus 10 and the Nexus 4. The update comes just in time, as we will be seeing the Nexus 4 on sale in the states again here in just about an hour and a half.

The update is said to fix the December birthday / anniversary bug, which left users unable to save any birthday or anniversary in that month using the People app. Aside from that, there don’t seem to be many, if any, changes. The hidden LTE on band 4 option still exists, and may still work.

If you’ve got one of these devices, let us know if you receive an OTA update, and any changes you might see, in the comments below.

According to emails being sent out by Google, the Nexus 4 is going back on sale in US markets today at 12 noon PST. The device was originally on sale on November 14th, but sailing wasn’t exactly smooth – orders piled up, and demand outweighed supply.

Be sure to let us know how the ordering process goes in the comments.

Posted: 27 Nov 2012 08:44 AM PST

Apple has recaptured a slight edge in U.S. market share thanks to the launch of the iPhone 5. The twelve week period ending in late October sees Apple pulling in 48.1 percent of the market while Android follows closely with 46.7 percent of the pie. Research firm Kantar Worldpanel ComTech believes Apple will hold this lead, maybe even pushing forward a bit and beat its previous high of 49.3 percent on the way to its highest ever share of the US smartphone market

New benchmarks uncover Samsung GT-I9400, GT-I9525

Posted: 27 Nov 2012 07:23 AM PST

New benchmarks for a pair of Samsung smartphones have landed online, adding a bit of mud to the water that is Galaxy S 3 successor.  Could one of these end up as the Galaxy S4? Based on model numbers alone, the GT-I9400 makes sense. Looking at the early specs, however, it sounds as if the GT-I9525 might be more along the lines of what we’re looking at for the new flagship

Google Play reviews now tied to Google+ profiles

Posted: 27 Nov 2012 06:22 AM PST

Google doesn’t want anyone leaving anonymous or fake author names with Google Play reviews so, beginning today, things will be a bit different. If you want to leave a review for an app, game, or anything else in the Play Store, then you’ll need to log in with your Google+ account. The change is very similar to the move made with YouTube videos where the same must be done if one wished to leave comments
