Deep Sleep Battery Saver puts a new spin on preserving battery life

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 11:33 AM PST

There’s a new app available now on the Google Play Store that will help you conserve and save that precious battery life. We all know our smartphones don’t last as long as we’d like, so why not try to save a little at night. There’s plenty of “battery saver” apps available — but none are like Deep Sleep Battery Saver. Their motto is “reclaim your battery” so lets take a look at why it’s so special.

unnamed

Like we mentioned above, there’s tons of different apps available to try and save battery life — especially at night. Today however the new Deep Sleep Battery Saver Pro is giving this an entirely new spin. Instead of just essentially killing your smartphone and night to conserve battery, this app will do everything the others do in a smarter fashion.

Most of these apps simply stop your device from vibrating from alerts, turning on the screen for notifications, and usually kill data or Wifi to preserve the battery life. Problem with that is you won’t get Gmail alerts, Facebook notifications, Twitter mentions or anything else for that matter. The phone is merely an alarm clock at that point. With Deep Sleep Battery Saver it does all of this, yet still finds time to occasionally wake up and pull that important information we all want.

“During deepsleep mode, Wifi, 3G are turned off, background apps are stopped. Therefore, most apps are not working, including Facebook, Google Service, etc,. It then constantly wakes up in order to download email, sync Facebook status, etc,. It’s defined by deepsleep frequency and woke up duration.”

The main sentence being “defined by deepsleep frequency and woke up duration.” Instead of completely killing all features and functions til say 6 AM, it will occasionally pull the phone out of sleep and wake up to check for emails, notifications, Facebook messages and more for you — then go back to sleep and save mode. For those that want total control they even offer Deep Sleep Battery Saver Pro where the user can define and set any and all parameters. Want to get important emails periodically in the night but not Facebook and Twitter, Pro will do exactly that. They offer 5 profiles on first install: Gentle, Balance, Strong, Aggressive, and Slumberer. Then it even features weekday and weekend profiles for those wanting a little leeway on the weekends.

More details, information, changelogs and both versions can be found over at XDA Developers.

If you are looking for some trouble, download some apps from “apkdeveloper”

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 10:47 AM PST

The term ‘super’ generally brings happy thoughts. But in the case of one Android developer going by the name of “apkdeveloper” — the term suggests something not so good. Maybe say, super shady. On that note, without getting any further in, we offer this warning. If you have any apps installed by said developer, go ahead and remove them now.

apkdeveloper-apps

The apps are all listed in the Google Play Store showing the same icon which is an Android robot along with a shopping cart and signs that say hot and sale. You can also distinguish the apkdeveloper titles by the ‘super’ in the name. For example, the copy of Temple Run is called Temple Run Super. In this case, we may go as far saying that the real version of Temple Run is super, but Temple Run Super — not so super.

Fun with words aside, lets get into some of the reason for caution here. Take the real and fake versions of World of Goo.You can tell the difference by the name, World of Goo vs. World of Goo Super. Perhaps key here are the permissions. The real World of Goo requires full network access and view network connections — both of which sound logical for a game such as this. The fake World of Goo Super required (as in past tense, this app has since been pulled) full network access along with the approximate location, precise location, read phone calls, mod or delete data on your SD card, find accounts, test access to protected storage, run at startup and more. Simply put — shady.

Of course, the key and problem here — we suspect that many users simply ignore the permissions and choose to install regardless. And in this case, the descriptions and the screen shots were simply lifted from the original apps making it harder to tell the difference. Finally, when you do come across apps such as these, remember, there is a way to report them to Google.

Android Winter Wonderland snowball fight wallpaper released

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 10:39 AM PST

For those looking to get into the holiday spirit even more this year, while also showing your Android pride today we have a nice new wallpaper for everyone to rock on their device of choice. The guys from Android Foundry have continued their tradition of releasing an awesome holiday themed Android wallpaper. This time around we have good ol Andy throwing snowballs.

122012_Holiday_Snowman-Wallpaper

This is their third Android-themed wallpaper released in the past few months, and comes in all shapes and sizes to fit the growing different screen size and resolutions of our Android friends. In case you missed the Christmas lights wallpaper you can get it here. Now we have a friendly wallpaper with Andy tossing a few snowballs at his robot friend, who’s also trying to steal a carrot from his Snowman if you didn’t notice.

This is rather perfect timing too for a snow-themed wallpaper considering so much of the country was covered in snow this Christmas season. I know many friends and family were covered in a foot or so of snow Christmas morning, but sadly here in Vegas it was dry as can be for me. Since we didn’t actually get any snow, this will have to hold me over.

If you’d like to customize your own new Android smartphone or tablet you received on Christmas to match the seasons feel free to hit the link below. They offer tons of different resolutions, or just grab a big one and resize as needed. Don’t forget to check out our very own Android Community Wallpapers. Enjoy folks!

Samsung reportedly plotting black Galaxy Note II

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 10:29 AM PST

Now that the Samsung Galaxy Note II has had some time to rack up sales, it’s time to shake things up a bit. According to a new rumor from German site AndroidSlash, Samsung is going to do this by introducing a new color for the very popular phablet. The new color is black and was revealed in a leaked press shot, which you can check out below.

blackgnoteii

Samsung seems to like releasing new colors for its flagship handsets, so the idea that it’s planning to release a new color for the Galaxy Note II is one that’s easy to believe. We have to say the Galaxy Note II looks pretty good in black, even if it is a bit boring considering that Samsung potentially has an entire range of colors to work with. Still, the company could do a lot worse than the black, so there isn’t much reason to complain.

While the success of the original Galaxy Note was something of a surprise, we expected the Galaxy Note II to perform. Perform it did, with Samsung recently announcing that the handset had broken 5 million sales worldwide. Even more impressive is just how quickly it managed to hit that milestone, as it had only been available for a few months before showing that tally.

Samsung hasn’t said anything about a black Galaxy Note II yet, so it may not be the best idea to get your hopes up at the moment. Still, this doesn’t seem to be too far of a stretch, so we might just get confirmation from the company soon. Keep it tuned here to Android Community and we’ll let you know if anything becomes official.

Carphone Warehouse offers Nexus 4 for free, with monthly payments

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 10:02 AM PST

The impressive and hard to find LG Nexus 4 from Google is still sold out everywhere we turn. The Play Store has been out of stock for weeks, T-Mobile stores have none on the shelves, but if you can find it from Carphone Warehouse you’ll be able to get this awesome phone for free. Yup we said free. They’re offering the device up for grabs as long as you sign a 2-year contract.

nexus_hero2-540x35841112

New details have confirmed Carphone Warehouse is offering the LG Nexus 4 absolutely free to customers that sign a new 2-year contract and a monthly plan costing around £26. So while we’re busy hitting F5 on our keyboard praying Google adds more to their inventory, these guys are giving them away for free.

T-Mobile did something similar here in the US for the holidays, but they didn’t have any in stock to give out so the deal was a bit of a bust. According to a few sources, Carphone Warehouses deal gives the device out for free along with 2 years of service including 400 minutes and 250MB of data for £26. They’re also offering the same price for those who don’t talk much and want 250 minutes and 750MB of data instead.

This is for the 16GB Nexus 4 and service is provided by Orange. There’s apparently other similar deals being offered in the region but Orange has the best pricing and deal available for the impressive smartphone. So while this doesn’t help us stateside, if you’re still looking for a Nexus 4 grabbing one on contract from Orange and Carphone Warehouse might not be a bad alternative.

ZTE Grand S details revealed ahead of January 8 announcement

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 09:30 AM PST

The ZTE Grand S will be officially unveiled during CES. In fact, ZTE has already confirmed that they will be announcing the handset on January 8. That bit we do know, however up until this point, most of the details have been nothing more than rumor. Granted, those rumors do make the handset seem interesting, however we can only put so much hope into rumors.

zte_logo-540x181

That said, it looks like ZTE has recently confirmed a few details about the Grand S. What we have seen thus far is coming by of of Chinese press reports. The details include the Grand S as having a thickness of just 6.9mm along with a 5-inch (1920 x 1080) HD display and a 13 megapixel rear-facing camera.

ZTE-Grand-S-4

Other still rumored specs include a quad-core 1.5Ghz Snapdragon S4 (APQ8064) processor along with 2GB of RAM and a 2500 mAh battery. On these specs, nothing all that surprising on the processor and the RAM, however the battery seems a bit small. Well, small as compared to the Nubia Z5 which was recently announced with a 3000 mAh battery.

The one other bit that we are curious to see announced deals with the exterior of the device. Previous rumors have suggested the Grand S will be made of ceramic. The price has yet to be confirmed, however reports are suggesting that it will arrive at 2,799 yuan (about $450 or €340). Judging from the few details that have been confirmed and the ones that are still rumored and it looks like ZTE could have a decent offering. Time will tell how well received it will be though.

Latest Samsung Galaxy S IV rumors suggest a slightly smaller Galaxy Note

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 08:43 AM PST

We saw the Galaxy S IV concept video that surfaced yesterday, but the truth of the matter is that details for the handset are still rumored and unconfirmed at this point in time. Nonetheless, it seems that based on previous history with the Galaxy S line, there are some likely assumptions that can be made in terms of specs (compared to the Galaxy S III).

samsunglogo3-540x180

That being said though, this latest round of Galaxy S IV rumors seem to be suggesting that the handset will be arriving as a slightly smaller Galaxy Note. In other words, a handset with support for the S Pen. These rumors are coming by way of the Korean language enuri.com website. The specs are said to include Jelly Bean along with a 5-inch 1080p display, quad-core Exynos 5440 processor, 9.2mm thickness and a 13 megapixel rear-facing camera with auto-focus.

Assuming the Galaxy S IV does arrive with S Pen support, this would imply that Samsung would be merging the Galaxy S and the Galaxy Note lines. The question would be why. So far it seems that people either love or hate the S Pen and given that, it almost seems to make more sense keeping the S Pen just in the Note line. But hey, we cannot speak for Samsung.

The 5-inch display seems to make sense though. Well, at least based on what we are seeing from other manufacturers. Otherwise, aside from some specs, this round of rumors are calling for an April announcement. So how about it, is anyone excited about the possibility of a Galaxy S IV with an S Pen? Or should the S Pen be left as a feature found only in the Note lineup?

Motorola rumored to launch an updated Droid RAZR M with a 4.5″ HD display

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 08:03 AM PST

A set of specs have recently leaked for a handset that looks to be a follow-up to the Droid RAZR M. The handset has been dubbed the Droid RAZR M HD, and as one would assume, these leaked specs are showing a handset with an HD display. More specifically, with a 4.5-inch display at 1280 x 720.

Screen-Shot-2012-09-13-at-4.33.57-PM-540x447

The catch here, while the leak contains an almost full set of specs, they did not arrive with any images. Or anything else to back this rumor. The one point that does seem to have this making sense, with Motorola already having a few RAZR branded smartphones — why not launch another. Of course, that is certainly not reason enough. That said, lets get into those specs.

Aside from the HD display, the RAZR M HD is said to have Android 4.1 (at launch) along with a 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960 processor, Adreno 225 graphics, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, microSD card slot and a massive 3300 mAh battery. The curious part here, it seems strange that Motorola would launch an HD version of the RAZR M with a display that falls in between that of the current RAZR M (4.3-inches) and the RAZR HD (4.7-inches). The rumored specs for the RAZR M HD have the handset weighing in at 5.22 ounces, which seems to make sense given the dimensions (and battery). As for the size, the specs say that it will be 5.15 x 2.52 x 0.35 inches, which is closer in size to that of the RAZR HD than the RAZR M.

All said and done, given these specs arrived with little else in terms of detail, we remain skeptical. Of course, given how we have seen Motorola grow and expand upon the Droid RAZR line, there is little that would be surprising. In fact, if anything, we could believe the specs are real, but that it may arrive as a new handset and not an HD version of the currently available RAZR M.

BLU Products announces the VIVO 4.65 HD smartphone with ICS

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 07:29 AM PST

BLU Products has officially announced their latest Android smartphone offering. The handset is the VIVO 4.65 HD and it will be arriving as the big brother to the VIVO 4.3. And assuming the device name didn’t make it clear enough, the handset will be arriving with a 4.65-inch HD Super AMOLED display.

BLU PRODUCTS VIVO 4.65 HD

Aside from the display, the BLU Products VIVO 4.65 HD will be running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with hardware features to include 3G/HSPA connectivity along with a dual-core 1.2GHz Cortex A9 processor and 1GB of RAM. The handset will also have a front-facing camera and an 8 megapixel rear-facing camera with auto-focus and HD video recording.

Otherwise, the VIVO 4.65 HD will have dual-SIM support, which simply means that you will be able to insert and use two active SIM cards at the same time. All of that said, the BLU Products handset is expected to arrive for those in the US beginning in January with availability for those in Latin America and parts of Asia to follow soon after. The VIVO 4.65 HD will be priced at $299.99 and available with “major” US retailers.

If the BLU Products handset sounds appealing but a 4.65-inch handset is bigger than you prefer — the company also offers the VIVO 4.3, the ELITE 3.8 and the DASH 3.5. All said and done, while some may prefer the Nexus 4 over the VIVO 4.65 HD, the BLU Products offering may have one thing going for it — availability. Of course, we will see how well that thought holds up once the handset arrives for sale in the US.

Press newsreader app launches with good looks and Google Reader sync

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 06:47 AM PST

A new newsreader app has recently landed in the Google Play Store. The app is called Press and brings the tagline of “Simply Read News.” And well, that seems to sum up the use case. Diving a bit deeper though and we see an app that comes with a nice feature set and what we would consider nice looks.

press-app-banner

First and foremost, the app is not free. And while we realize that may be a turn off for some — the app is low priced at $1.99. A note on the price though, that is said to be an “introductory price to celebrate our launch.” No word as to the regular price which means that now is as good a time as any to buy.

Pricing aside, Press is available in the Google Play Store and currently sitting at version 1.0.2 with support for devices running Android 4.0 or later. In our quick test, the app looks and works nice on both a tablet and smartphone. Otherwise, before we dive into the feature list, lets get the other catch out of the way — the Press app syncs with (and requires you to have a) Google Reader account.

That being said, if the fact that a Google Reader account is required and a $1.99 price point didn’t turn you away, here is what you can expect from Press. The features include offline reading support, a clean reading environment, swipe navigation, image zooming, the ability to change the size and style of the font, the option to share articles or save them for later and having articles open in either the app or your default browser. Finally, this is probably not as surprising given that Press is a paid app, but you can expect to find no ads.

OUYA developer SDK released alongside special edition Dev Consoles

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 06:24 AM PST

We recently mentioned that the OUYA Dev Consoles were beginning to ship. Well, that and that the fact that the developer SDK was also due to be released today. Sounds like good timing on the release of the SDK as developers should have that ready to go by the time the OUYA Dev Consoles arrive.

ouya_dev-580x382

While we wait for developers to begin to receive those consoles — it looks like the team behind the OUYA has taken to YouTube with an unboxing video that details exactly what developers can expect. And coming as a nice surprise, 1,200 developers will be getting a special edition translucent version of the Dev Console.

You can check out the unboxing video for yourself, however those looking for some of the basics such as what is included in the box — you can expect the special edition console and two matching translucent controllers as well as batteries (for the controller), an HDMI cable, micro-USB cable, power adapter and welcome letter. The letter will serve as both a thank you and a reminder that this is an early release and things may not be 100 percent. Perhaps more important though, the letter also points out that this console is for development and currently has no games installed.

Speaking of games though, we learned about 10 upcoming games earlier in the month. The games were coming from 10 different developers and include the following; Fist of Awesome, MechKnight Chronicles, Syder Arcade, KidElectro, Space Runner, Legend of Dungeon, iMechOnline, DustyRevenge, HolyShield! and Starbound. That all being said, even if you are not a developer and not going to be getting one of these special edition consoles, the video is still worth a watch.

Android Community Nightly: December 27th, 2012

Posted: 27 Dec 2012 06:43 PM PST

Hello world, thanks for stopping by to get a quick rundown of anything and everything that happened in the world of Android today. Below you’ll find tons of news about Samsung and their slew of devices, some cool NFC technology and wireless charging in cars, and much much more. Read on to get your daily Android news fix.

samsung-jellybean

Today we’ll start off with Samsung, because as usual they rocked the news outlets with plenty of interesting information. When you have millions and millions of sales and more devices coming the news tends to float around with ease. First off a rather fun Galaxy S IV concept video was released, and nothing you see is real — but it’s fun nonetheless. Samsung announced the original Galaxy Note would receive Jelly Bean and the multi-view features, and at the same time AT&T updated their Note II with multi-window support and more. And last but not least Samsung released another TV ad spot worth checking out, just for fun.

Screen Shot 2012-12-27 at 10.45.48 AM

In other fun upgrade news the somewhat popular Tegra 3 powered Toshiba Excite 7.7 was updated to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Oh, and the bigger Excite 10 got the same upgrade treat. While we’re talking about Toshiba they unveiled their new camera module for smartphones with Lytro-like features. It’ll take 500,000 images at once and let you tweak and refocus the entire photo before finalizing the image. It’s amazing and I want it now!

Then as usual we’ll end on a speed round of random goodness. Bluestacks for MAC brings all Android apps to OSX, Huawei’s Ascend D2 quad-core smartphone leaked in the wild, and OUYA is shipping dev kits starting today. T-Mobile is getting ready to release Jelly Bean for the HTC One S, and Hyundai wants us to unlock our cars with NFC tags and replace our keys with smartphones. We’ll end on a good note. Check out Google’s round up of best apps, movies and music of 2012 by clicking here.

See ya tomorrow for a fantastic Friday!

Toshiba reveals Lytro-style refocus camera for smartphones

Posted: 27 Dec 2012 03:15 PM PST

New details have surfaced today that the folks from Toshiba are working on an impressive Lytro-like mini camera module for smartphones and tablets. If you’re asking yourself what Lytro is, you should check this out. Essentially you’ll be able to refocus and perfect parts of a photo well after you’ve snapped the image. the Lytro camera was rather large, so getting this into a smartphone would be quite the task. More details after the break.

toshiba_lytro-style_camera_module

The camera, said to be in the works from Toshiba snaps about 500,000 pictures in one take with a complex lens assembly creating data-dense adjustable images. Crazy right? Once you’ve captured an image you can then go back and fix and refocus any problem areas. Obviously any professional won’t like this idea, but we all can’t get perfect photos. Mkay!

Toshibawow

The image above is just one example of said technology, which is floating around showing the same image being tweaked and focused at different ends of the spectrum. That isn’t all either. You can focus on certain aspects of the image to blur out those photobombers, or make the entire image in-focus after a few tweaks for the perfect shot. That isn’t all either. According to Toshiba they’ll also be bringing this amazing technology to video capture as well, now that would be impressive.

Also, editing will be extremely easy considering there will technically be 500,000 different images all at different focus points. Making quick edits a breeze. Toshiba is hoping to release this camera module and get it into our favorite smartphones in late 2013. Hopefully the Nexus 5 can have something amazing like Lytro. Would you guys pay extra for a smartphone with a feature such as this? No information on final image resolution was mentioned, but more details can be found at the link below.

Hyundai NFC concept car replaces our keys with smartphones

Posted: 27 Dec 2012 02:33 PM PST

This week the ever so popular car manufacturer Hyundai is showing off a brand new type of NFC capability. Something surely we’ve all thought about before. Wouldn’t it be nice to unlock and start our cars all with our smartphone? Leave those bulky keys and keyless entry add-ons at home. This new smart car uses NFC tags to do just that.

fariafaaaaaaa-580x387

It’s being called the Hyundai “Connectivity Concept” Car and is being shown off and previewed at the manufacturer's European headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany. This new concept is being shown on the manufacturer's New Generation i30 car, using Near Field Communication (NFC) to complete the connection.

It’s simple. You use your NFC capable smartphone and pair it with the NFC tag nicely integrated into the vehicle and a quick tap unlocks the car. Then they’ve got a nice mat inside where you’ll also place the phone which acts as a stream to their 7-inch display. There you’ll get music, video, radio, phone contacts and much more. Obviously they won’t be encouraging Angry Birds on the display, but I’m sure we can hack that feature into it too.

That isn’t all either. Once placed inside the car that same mat doubles as a wireless charging dock. No wires needed. Simply place your wireless charging capable Nexus 4, DROID DNA, HTC Butterfly and some of those Nokia Lumia phones on the mat and you’ll be charged in no time. They’ll be using MirrorLink technology for Google Maps GPS, and tons of other things are possible with this technology. Obviously this is just a start, but I have a feeling we’ll be seeing much more at CES this year with cars integrating our smartphones.

Pebble smartwatch FCC filing revealed as the product verification build begins

Posted: 27 Dec 2012 01:54 PM PST

We suspect many went into December hoping for news that the Pebble smartwatch would show in time for the holiday season. And well, as we now realize, that didn’t happen. Disappointment aside, there is some good news however. In fact, it is some news that suggests the Pebble is moving forward.

pebble-smartwatch-fcc-01

We recently heard from the folks at Pebble about the production verification build and even more recent — the FCC filing was discovered. Now keeping in mind that things could still go crazy and the Pebble could still turn into vaporware. Keeping positive thoughts though, the FCC approval does mean that the smartwatch is one step closer to shipping.

pebble-smartwatch-fcc-02

Digging through the filing does not reveal much new. There were a few images (both of the interior and exterior) along with the usual goodies such as the confidentiality letters, the label location and the test reports. The filing also included the user manual. The manual was short and to the point stating that Android support will be limited to devices running 2.3.3 or later and that users will need to download the Pebble app from Google Play for pairing with your phone.

Otherwise, touching back on the production process for a moment. The recent update from Pebble stated that the PV (production verification) build is set to begin this week. And for those wondering why that is good news — that is the final phase before the MP (mass production) build begins. Keep in mind though, Pebble did not say how long the PV build is expected to take. In addition to the mass production build getting closer, the software development team has also released the gold-master version of the firmware to the factory. Bottom line here, between this update from Pebble and the discovery of the FCC filing, it certainly seems like a release is getting close. Or at the very least, we can hope that a release is getting close.

T-Mobile HTC One S Jelly Bean update hits the testing phase

Posted: 27 Dec 2012 12:50 PM PST

The folks from HTC and T-Mobile have a little gift coming soon for those HTC One S smartphone owners. Earlier this week we reported the international HTC One S was finally starting to get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean updates, and now we can confirm HTC and T-Mobile are in the final testing stages of the same update for their own customers.

According to the guys at TmoNews HTC is sending out requests and invites for certain exclusive users and VIP members to get early access of the Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update for their HTC One S. This is essentially a beta test or “soak test” as we call it these days, and hopefully it will be rolling out for all users soon.

These beta tests are usually the final stage of testing, and as long as everything goes well we can expect Android 4.1 Jelly Bean to hit all T-Mobile One S phones within the next 2-3 weeks. Sometimes these things take time, but we’re hopeful considering the One X has already seen the same update in multiple regions without a hiccup.

There’s no official word on how long this will take HTC and T-Mobile, but this is certainly a good sign. Users will be enjoying Jelly Bean’s expandable notifications, faster user interface and our favorite, Google Now, in no time flat. We’ll update if we learn more on this VIP testing, and stay tuned for details when the actual update is ready to rock for all those usual T-Mobile customers.

OUYA Developer kits shipping today, could arrive tomorrow

Posted: 27 Dec 2012 12:33 PM PST

The highly anticipated open-source game console OUYA developer kits are shipping sooner than expected, and today we’ve learned some lucky developers could be receiving theirs as soon as tomorrow. According to our good pals at SlashGear instead of the developer consoles shipping tomorrow, they’ve already sent many out and they’ll be arriving all weekend long.

OUYA originally stated tomorrow, December 28th, they’d start shipping kits to developers who pre-ordered. Now however according to the OUYA forums some are actually receiving their units tomorrow, and all who pre-ordered will have their own Tegra 3 powered OUYA in hand before January 10th. What a perfect way to start the weekend and enter into 2013. Right?

OUYA was one of the most successful kickstarter campaigns of 2012, with more than 8.5 million in funding from excited backers. For those lucky developers that have one coming soon I’m sure all the early backers are eagerly awaiting their unit to arrive tomorrow, Saturday, or sometime early next week.

The official OUYA developer SDK is expected to be released tomorrow, which will be right on time for those who receive their console tomorrow as well. We are expecting tons of high profile games for the Android-powered Tegra 3 quad-core gaming console. Final Fantasy III will be launched, and earlier this month we detailed 10 new games coming soon. Expect some goodness from the OUYA, and let us know when yours arrives!

AT&T Galaxy Note II multi-window update now rolling out

Posted: 27 Dec 2012 12:18 PM PST

We recently learned that AT&T was going to begin rolling out the multi-window update for the Galaxy Note II as of today. And well, judging from some recent activity in a few user forums — it looks like that update is now available. Well, at least available for some users. As with any OTA update, it tends to roll out over time.

Those with an AT&T branded Galaxy Note II in their hand may want to either check for an update notification, or dive into the settings and check manually. The update measures in at 178.92MB in size and once installed, will have your handset running Android 4.1.2 with multi-window support.

This AT&T release follows the T-Mobile release which came back on December 19. Other carriers aside though, those rocking an AT&T Galaxy Note II will now be able to use the Multi-Window feature. This means you will be able to split the screen into two active windows. This was a feature that Samsung recently highlighted in the ‘Office Upgrade’ commercial.

Based on what we have seen, the update appears to be solid and (so far) not causing an issues for users. Otherwise, users are reporting that the process takes about 15 minutes in total with a few re-boots mixed in, you know, just to make you nervous. Finally and perhaps most important — the update process will run its course without any adjustments to your existing settings and data.
