Another day is on the books, and despite the fact that Fridays are normally slow as far as news goes, this one was pretty eventful. For starters, we found out that the Samsung Galaxy S IV might be more similar to the Galaxy Note than its predecessors, and it might even be coming as early as April. Developer SDKs for OUYA became available today, along with an unboxing and uncasing video from the company behind the little Android console that turned into a Kickstarter darling. Apple has agreed to drop the Galaxy S III Mini from its patent suit, while Samsung may need to pay a $15 billion fine for trying to get Apple products banned in Europe.

The LG Optimus G gained Carbonfree certification today, so you’ll be netting yourself an eco-friendly handset if you pick one of those up. Speaking of LG, the company is currently pursuing a sales ban on the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 because it alleges that the device infringes its patents. We warned readers not to download apps made by one “apkdeveloper” on the Google Play Store today, while the massive Huawei Ascend Mate showed off a bit for the camera.

Carphone Warehouse is offering the Nexus 4 at no initial cost with monthly payments, so those who want to pick up one of the latest Nexus devices on the cheap might want to check that our. According to the latest rumors, Motorola might be plotting a new version of the DROID RAZR M with a 4.5-inch HD screen, which is music to our ears. There’s an Android Winter Wonderland wallpaper for all of you who can’t get enough of the winter months, while BLU Products has announced its VIVO 4.65 HD smartphone.

We found out some new details about the ZTE Grand S today, and a good looking new reader app called Press has arrived with Google Reader sync. Deep Battery Saver is attempting to conserve your battery power better than the other apps out there, Videocon has launched a new 10.1-inch Jelly Bean tablet for just $205, and Samsung has announced plans to build a 1.1 million square foot R&D center for Silicon Valley. That does it for this edition of Android Community Nightly, so go out and enjoy the weekend!

Samsung announces 1.1 million square foot R&D center for Silicon Valley

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 04:06 PM PST

Today Samsung has announced that they’ll be bringing their large buildings and R&D department to California and the ever so popular Silicon Valley once again. They’ve announced today that Samsung Semiconductor will be expanding operations in San Jose and opening two new facilities. One being over 1.1 million square feet. More details below.

Silicon Valley is where it’s at right? That or Mountain View. Samsung is looking to beef up their production stateside and have confirmed some big plans for 2013. The first being a 1.1 million square foot 10 story Sales and R&D department for Samsung Semiconductor, Inc. It will offer covered parking for all employees, an amenity pavilion and much more. This will be just north of downtown San Jose, California.

Samsung states that the 1.1 million square feet sounds bigger than it really is, and that the layout will actually be designed to “encourage interaction among the staff” along with several other key design elements. This new R&D center will actually be slightly bigger than Apple’s new 3,600 employee center in Texas.

Then Samsung is also preparing a new building for Samsung Information Systems America Inc. This facility will be quite large too, and their R&D center will be relocated to an 8.5 acre 6 story building with quite the view of a nearby golf course. We thought it was nice to work for Google, now Samsung might be starting to offer their stateside employees the same goods. Both new facilities will be “state of the art” and have innovative energy efficient offices. Go big Samsung, go big!

LG Optimus G gets eco-friendly, earns Carbonfree certification

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 03:17 PM PST

The folks from LG have really been stepping up their game lately in terms of hardware and software for their Android smartphones. First they launched the highly impressive and capable Optimus G, and then followed it up with the LG Nexus 4 in partnership with Google. Today we’re learning their Optimus G is more than just a powerful smartphone, it’s also eco-friendly.

Screen-Shot-2012-10-22-at-1.59.50-PM-540x333

LG’s been continuing to push the boundaries of smartphone in terms of technology, as well as carbon footprint. Their Optimus G rocks a low power IPS display, yet still runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and a powerhouse quad-core 1.5 GHz processor under the hood. Today they’ve announced the Optimus G is one of their few phones to receive a Carbonfree certification.

The Carbonfund.org Foundation has certified LG’s popular handset as being completely Carbonfree, and thus eco-friendly. LG’s also received the same cert. for 5 other products this year, although none were mobile devices. This might not be breaking news, but it’s good to see a smartphone company taking action in this manor. Stay tuned for early next year when they unveil their Optimus G2 with a 1080p HD display and more.

"As an environmentally responsible company, we have strengthened our commitment to bringing energy-efficient products to market. But I'll be the first to admit that this is a marathon, not a sprint and we still have a long way to go. Fortunately, we're off to a great start", declared Dr. Skott Ahn, Chief Technology Officer at LG Electronics.”

The Optimus G is just the second LG smartphone with such claims, the first being the LG Mach slider that was launched last year. So why exactly does this matter? Well in terms of smartphone news it doesn’t, but for those looking for a good company that also cares about the planet, LG is one for your list.

Huawei Ascend Mate 6.1-inch smartphone smiles for the camera

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 02:56 PM PST

After the initial reports went around that Huawei was preparing a massive 6.1-inch smartphone to be called the Ascend Mate we weren’t sure what to think. Then after a few leaks it was spotted and revealed late last week by one of Huawei’s own execs. Today however we’re getting another look at this massive smartphone that’s gearing up to take on the Note II.

Screen Shot 2012-12-28 at 2.42.02 PM

Yup, Huawei has a 6.1-inch 1080p quad-core smartphone headed to the market soon. After seeing a few benchmarks leak here and there we’ve been waiting to see this beast, and now it’s leaking all over the place. The new images today have leaked courtesy of MyDrivers, and shows that nice little curved unibody design.

Screen Shot 2012-12-28 at 2.42.15 PM

Looking at the curved back it might not sit to flush with a table or surface, so might be best for hand usage only. Pretty interesting design choice for such a large smartphone. Either way this 1.8 GHz quad-core smartphone is still looking good compared to something like the Note II as far as competition is concerned.

Along with a 4,000 mAh battery and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean under the hood the Huawei Ascend Mate looks to bring some serious power to the smartphone market, at least for China. We can expect to see plenty more of this, and the rest of Huawei’s lineup in just a few weeks at CES in Las Vegas. We’ll be sure to get some hands-on time with the Ascend Mate so stay tuned.

Apple agrees to drop the Galaxy S III Mini patent claim

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 01:12 PM PST

Apple has recently agreed to drop the Galaxy S III Mini from its patent case with Samsung. If you remember back, Apple had asked the courts to include the handset (along with a few tablets) to the patent case back in November. That however has changed since Samsung has never released the Galaxy S III Mini for sale in the US market.

GALAXY-SIII-mini-Product-Image4-540x394

According to Samsung, they are not “making, using, selling, offering to sell or importing the Galaxy S III Mini in the United States.” And while Apple has agree to withdraw the handset from the case, they did so under a condition. That condition was to make sure that the removal from the case would “not prejudice Apple’s ability later to accuse the Galaxy S III Mini if the factual circumstances change.”

Of course, looking at this as a consumer — this also means that Samsung will likely never release the Galaxy S III Mini in the US market. After all, should Samsung decide to release the handset, Apple would then once again ask to have it included in the case.

All said and done, while we would consider this a win for Samsung, it is important to remember that this is just one device out of many. In other words, while the Galaxy S III Mini is out, there are still more than a few devices that remain included. And keep in mind, this latest case is separate from the previous Apple/Samsung case which saw Apple be awarded a $1.05 billion verdict.

Videocon launches 10.1-inch Jelly Bean tablet for $205

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 12:55 PM PST

Cheap tablets are slowly becoming more and more popular. With Google’s Nexus 7 hitting the premium side of things at $199 many have been trying to match it. How about a 10-inch dual-core tablet that’s powered by Android 4.1 Jelly Bean all for just $205. Well that’s exactly what Videocon has released in their new TV10 tablet.

Videocon-VT10-1

There’s plenty of cheap Android tablets in the world, especially from China. However this is more than just a knock off tablet, although sadly it appears to only be available in India. At least initially it will only be in India but we’re hopeful it will see other markets soon. It might not have a quad-core and maxed out specs, but for just over $200 it’s looking pretty good.

The Videocon VT10 isn’t just your average tablet though either. You’ll be rocking a 10.1-inch 1280×800 display, Rockchips RK3066 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of storage, microSD support for added storage options, dual 2 megapixel cameras, and more. This is all powered by a decently sized 6,800 mAh battery under the hood. And all for $205.

The Nexus 7 is $199 and only rocks a single weak camera, but then again it is a Nexus. There’s no telling how the hardware and software is on this thing, but so far it sounds pretty good. We do have some goofy on-screen volume controls but otherwise Android 4.1 Jelly Bean is keeping everything smooth. We can expect plenty of budget tablets to arrive next year, but check this out if you’re interested now.

LG Display looking for Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet ban due to patent infringement

Posted: 28 Dec 2012 12:30 PM PST

Samsung is no stranger to public patent cases, thanks to Apple, however it now seems another company going after the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet. That company is LG Display and they are looking to stop the sale, manufacture and importation of the Note 10.1. And on top of that, they are also going after compensation for damages should the tablet remain available for sale.

GALAXY-Note-10.1-Product-Image-1-650x433-540x359

According to a recent report, LG Display is looking for compensation of 1.0 billion won (about $933,000) per day. LG Display filed the injunction this past week and are claiming that Samsung is infringing three patents which deal with the liquid crystal display (LCD) panels used on the tablet.

The LG Display patents are said to deal with viewing technology embedded in the display. Specifically, these patents deal with the improving the quality regardless of the viewing angle. Samsung on the other hand believes they have not infringed on any of LG’s patents. In fact, a statement from Shim Jaeboo, a vice president of Samsung Display, has called these “unjustified claims.”

Otherwise, in addition to this recently filed suit, LG Display and Samsung also have some other ongoing patent cases. The other cases began back in September when LG Display accused Samsung of infringing patents on seven organic light-emitting diode (OLED)-related technologies. These are used in five Samsung products including some Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab devices.
