1080p ZTE Grand S makes grand entrance at CES, availability to begin in China

Posted: 10 Jan 2013 06:15 AM PST

Please, sir, we’ll take another… device announcement, that is. ZTE yesterday announced the ZTE Grand S, a device that has leaked here and there for a little while now in the days heading up to CES. The device will feature full 1080p, and is being slated as the world’s thinnest phone, although that is not the first time we’ve heard that this week.

It is definitely slim, however, at just 6.9mm, and it comes with:

  • Android Jelly Bean
  • 1.7GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU
  • 2GB RAM
  • 16GB storage
  • 13MP rear camera
  • 2MP front camera
  • 1080p video recording
  • LTE compatibility

the LTE on the device makes us hopeful to see it in the states eventually, however, the Grand S is set for debut in ZTE’s native China to begin, with no official word where it might be headed after. Be sure to hit the break for the full press release.

Panasonic announces 7-inch JT-B1 Toughpad, the Toughbook of the tablet world

Posted: 10 Jan 2013 06:06 AM PST

If you’re familiar with Panasonic, then chances are you’re also familiar with their infamous Toughbook line of computers. Sturday and built to withstand anything thrown at them, these things are practically indestructible. Now, Panasonic hopes to dig further down into that niche with the new JT-B1 tablet, also known as the Toughpad. The JT-B1 is designed to meet MIL-STD-810G durability certifications and IP-65  specifications for ingress protection, and is made for people such as those in contruction, oil rigging and engineering, first response, warehouse work, etc.

As far as the specs, here’s what we’re looking at:

  • Operating System: Android 4.0
  • Processor: TI OMAP4460 1.5GHz Dual core
  • Memory: 16GB ROM, 1GB RAM, micro SDHC
  • Rugged: MIL-STD-810G, 5' drop, IP65, 14° to 122°F (operational temp range)
  • Display: 7", daylight viewable, 500nit, WSVGA (1024 x 600)
  • Camera: Front: 1.3Mp fixed focus, Rear: 13.0Mp auto focus w/ LED light
  • Battery: 8.0 hours – Large 5,720mAh battery (user-replaceable)
  • Dimensions: 8.7"x 5.1" x 0.7"
  • Weight: 1.2lbs
  • Wireless: Bluetooth V4.0, 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, optional embedded 4G LTE + 3G
  • I/O: Micro USB

No, it isn’t pretty, and it sure as hell isn’t cheap, either. The steep price tag of $1,199 will keep most consumers away, but still make it a viable option for those who need it. The Toughbook should be available in February. Full press release and video after the break.

Pantech Perception may have leaked, looks ready to impress

Posted: 10 Jan 2013 05:45 AM PST

Pantech, who’s making their presence known at CES this year, may have a new mid-level device heading to Verizon soon. The leak shows the Pantech Perception, and with it came details, such as a 720p LCD screen and a Qualcomm S4 CPU. Knowing what we know about Pantech, we can probably expect good camera quality, and a price that’s reasonable.

Samsung unveils 8-core Exynos 5 Octa mobile processor

Posted: 10 Jan 2013 05:30 AM PST

Samsung seems to really be trying to take the cake with their latest hardware announcement. Hot on the heels of the new Tegra 4 from NVIDIA and the Snapdragon 800 from Qualcomm, Sammy has announced a new chipset of their own – the Exynos 5 Octa. That’s right, folks. Octa. As in 8 cores.

Sounds like a lot of power, right? Speed wise, yes, battery wise, perhaps not so much. Samsung has developed this new chip with your sanity in mind: the cores are separated 2 ways, with 4 Cortex A15 cores handling the intense stuff, while 4 Cortex A7 cores handle the menial work. The chipset is well-suited for phones, and Samsung knows it – in fact, they’re saying that it could end up using 70% less battery life than current quad-core CPUs on the market now, as well as the dual-core Exynos 5, which currently runs the backbone of the Nexus 10

This is big news, folks, and has the potential to change the capabilities of our mobile devices for a long time to come. Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Sprint to include local FM stations on some smartphones in 2013

Posted: 10 Jan 2013 05:27 AM PST

Is it ground-breaking? Hardly. Nonetheless, Sprint has announced that they will start introducing FM radio capability, thanks to a partnership with the American radio industry. The feature comes via what Sprint is calling “NextRadio”, which will feature a slew of interactive features – none of which we know specifics on as of yet. The thing that makes this different from your standard FM radio capabilities on some devices currently on the market is that the feature will not require special hardware, meaning any Sprint device (theoretically) could use it.

Be sure to check out the press release below.
