T-Mobile launches the Titanium Gray Samsung Galaxy S III

Posted: 10 Jan 2013 11:29 AM PST

We had seen rumors back in late-December, and well, it looks like they have since been confirmed by the carrier. In short, T-Mobile has officially launched the Samsung Galaxy S III in another color. And without any further adieu, that new color is Titanium Gray.

titanium-gray-galaxy-s-iii

That being said, the new Titanium Gray color is available in the 16GB model and will serve to replace the 16GB model in Pebble Blue. T-Mobile will continue to carry the 32GB Pebble Blue model as well as the Marble White model in both 16GB and 32GB. The pricing remains the same, which means those interested will be able to pick up the Titanium Gray model for $279.99.

As of this time the T-Mobile website is showing the 16GB model in Marble White and Titanium Gray and the 32GB model in Marble White and Pebble Blue. On the flip side, T-Mobile retail stores were expected to continue selling the 16GB Pebble Blue model until they run out of inventory. Basically, if you wanted a 16GB Pebble Blue Galaxy S III with T-Mobile — you may want to make that purchase sooner rather than later.

All said and done, similar to the pricing, the only difference here is in exterior color. The handset still sports features to include a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED HD display, dual-core 1.5GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera and 8 megapixel rear-facing camera. Lastly, the handset is running Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean with the Samsung TouchWiz user interface.

GameStick Kickstarter disappears due to IP dispute [Update]

Posted: 10 Jan 2013 10:16 AM PST

The GameStick Kickstarter campaign launched earlier in the month and immediately captured some attention. In fact, within the first 30 hours they managed to reach their initial $100,000 funding goal. And we say initial because they later added some additional perks for higher funding levels. But all that may not be important at this time as the GameStick Kickstarter page has recently disappeared.

gamestick-controller-5401

The reason behind the removal, an IP dispute. Those visiting the page will be greeted with a message that reads rather simply that the GameStick “is the subject of an intellectual property dispute and currently unavailable.” The question now is whether it will come back, or remain unavailable.

At this time the project has not been killed entirely and at the moment, has just been “removed from public view.” Further details note that if they are not able to re-post it within 30 days, they “will cancel the project.” And to those who backed, rest assured in knowing that if that happens — you will not be charged for your pledge.

All said and done, the details are on the light side at the moment. Simply put, there has been no indication given as to who (or which company) triggered this dispute. Nonetheless, we are thinking that those who did pledge to back this project will be rather disappointed considering this seemed like a fairly solid deal for a pledge of less than $100.

Update: It looks like PlayJam, the folks behind the GameStick have responded in regards to this issue. And for those who were feeling a bit worried about the future of the product, it is looking as if things are going to work out. PlayJam has said that the IP dispute was not in regards to the actual product, but in regards to one of their promo videos. More specifically, one of their promo videos had exposed a game without clearance. Anyway, said video is being updated and it is looking like things will return sooner rather than later.

Angry Birds Space app update brings a water galaxy called PigDipper

Posted: 10 Jan 2013 09:52 AM PST

Rovio Mobile has rolled-out the latest Angry Birds app update, this time for the Space edition. This latest update can be found by way of the Google Play Store where it is currently sitting at version 1.4.0. Of course, version number aside, you will recognize this latest update due to the new water galaxy — PigDipper.

angry-birds-space-banner-

Yup, the PigDipper has arrive on Angry Birds Space. Rovio is touting this one as being the “weirdest galaxy yet.” A galaxy where all of the planets are filled with water along with strange aquatic life and Bad Piggies. You will want to be on the lookout for the pigs, and in order to do that — make sure you are paying attention to the boats.

Otherwise, playing this new galaxy will require the “unique physics” that many have come to love (and sometimes hate) in Angry Birds Space. But on the positive side, there is the ability to set-up some trick shots. This update also brings some new power-ups, including a Flock of Birds, Space Egg and Pig Puffer.

And for a little hint, Rovio has said to make sure and check out how the Ice Bird and Pig Puffer react to water. That all being said, remember, Angry Birds Space is just one of many including the original as well as Rio, Seasons and Star Wars. Then there is Bad Piggies and Amazing Alex. Simply put, Rovio has plenty of hits ready and available in the Play Store. With that, you can grab the latest version of Angry Birds Space from the Google Play Store in an ad-supported free version or an ad-free version for $0.99.

Archos unveils the full Titanium tablet lineup at CES

Posted: 10 Jan 2013 09:05 AM PST

Archos unveiled the 97 Titanium HD tablet with “Super HD” display just a little before Christmas. And well, it looks like the 97 Titanium HD is only one device that will make up the family of Titanium branded tablets. This news comes out of CES and notes that the Titanium lineup will include four tablets in total.

archos-titanium-tablet-lineup-540

The models will include the 70 Titanium, 80 Titanium, 101 Titanium and the previously mentioned 97 Titanium HD. These devices will all be running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and with features to include IPS multi-touch displays, a “sleek” aluminum design and a dual-core 1.6GHz processor with quad-core GPU.

In addition to running Jelly Bean, these are all Google certified tablets, which really just means that you will have access to the Google Play Store. The names of the tablets imply the size of the display. Simply put, we are looking at a 7-inch, 8-inch, 9.7-inch and 10.1-inch model.

That thought aside, while we have yet to see anything in terms of a release date for any, Archos did announce some pricing. The 70 Titanium will be $119, the 80 Titanium will be $169, the 101 Titanium will be $199 and the 97 Titanium will be $249. All seemingly decent price points.

And in addition to the pricing, Archos also made it clear where these stand noting that the 70 Titanium “offers similar features to competitors such as Amazon, at a better price point” with the 80 Titanium going after the iPad mini and the 97 Titanium HD being “an alternative to the new iPad for half the price.” Aside from the Titanium tablet line, Archos also announced the TV Connect with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and the 7-inch GamePad during CES.

Facebook Pages Manager app launches for Android

Posted: 10 Jan 2013 08:31 AM PST

Facebook has recently launched the Pages Manager app for Android. The app joins the Facebook and Facebook Messenger apps in the Google Play Store and is currently sitting at version 1.0. Also similar to the other Facebook branded apps, the Pages Manager app is available for free and with the requirement of Android 2.2 or later for use.

facebook-pages-manager-banner

As for using the app, this will do just what the name implies — allow you to manage your Facebook Pages. In fact, it will allow you to manage multiple Facebook Pages. The app will allow you to post new updates and images, reply to comments and view and reply to private messages sent to your Page.

In addition, the app will provide notifications so you can keep up with new activity in real-time. About the notifications, judging from a quick read of the comments, you may want to pay attention to whether or not you really need these because at this time, it looks like there is not any way to turn them off. Simply put, if the notifications are not what you are looking for, you may want to skip this app for now.

And for the final bit, which we suspect will be most important to some, the Pages Manager app will allow you to view your latest Pages Insights (the stats). That all being said, while the Insights are nice to have, if you can live without seeing those on a mobile device, you can probably handle most of the other activities using the regular Facebook app.

Google rolling-out ability for all developers to reply to Play Store comments

Posted: 10 Jan 2013 07:47 AM PST

Way back in June of 2012, Google began letting developers reply directly to user comments in the Play Store. The one catch with that, this was made available only for a select group of developers, those sporting a “Top Developer Badge.” And well, flash forward back to the present day and it looks like this is now rolling-out to all developers.

google-play-store-logo-540

We have yet to see any official announcement from Google on this matter, however a developer by the name of Dave Kover recently noticed he was able to reply to user comments. What this means is that developers will now be able to reply to user comments and get additional information in the event of an issue, or even provide guidance and updates.

Of course, the end result here is that roll-out appears as if it is finally taking that one-way street away entirely. Still, we should point out that while more and more developers will be getting the ability to reply to comments — we suspect not all will be able to do so just yet. Simply put, if you leave a comment, the developer may not be able to reply just yet.

Otherwise, while this is not necessarily a huge change in the way things work, it does come as a nice addition to what we have been seeing Google do with comments. This also follows another fairly recent change where Google tied the your Google+ account into comments — taking away the anonymity.

ZTE Nubia Z7 rumors point towards a 6.3-inch display and 8-core processsor

Posted: 10 Jan 2013 07:15 AM PST

With ZTE having officially unveiled the Nubia Z5 smartphone, the rumor mill has kicked back into effect with details of a slightly larger Nubia branded handset. The latest rumors, which are coming by way of GizChina are calling for a 6.3-inch display. The handset is the Nubia Z7 and the oversized display seems to be only one of the high-end specs.

zte_logo-540x1811

Keeping with talk of the display, the ZTE Nubia Z7 is said to have a resolution of 2560 x 1440. Yes, 2560 x 1440. Additional, still-rumored-specs include an 8-core 1.4GHz processor, Mali T658 GPU, LTE connectivity and Android 5.0. Of course, while we have yet to see any rumors suggesting a release date, that last bit certainly points towards this handset coming late in the year (at the earliest).

The rumors are also pointing towards the Nubia Z7 as having a 4000 mAh battery, 16 megapixel rear-facing camera and 128GB of internal storage space. All that said, while this would certainly be a really nice handset spec wise, we do remain skeptical considering these are really high-end sounding.

zte-nubia-z7-jpg

Then again, no telling where smartphones may be at the end of the year. If nothing else, this would almost put the Nubia Z5 to shame and that is a pretty solid handset in terms of specs. Just to give the comparison, the Nubia Z5 has a 5-inch 1080p display with a quad-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro (APQ8064) processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage and a 13 megapixel rear-facing camera.

Alcatel One Touch Tab 8 HD tablet announced with an 8″ IPS display

Posted: 10 Jan 2013 06:47 AM PST

Alcatel had a handful of announcements here at CES 2013. We saw smartphones to include the Scribe X and Scribe HD-LTE as well as the One Touch Idol and Idol Ultra. And on the tablet front, we saw the 7-inch One Touch Evo 7 HD. But not to leave things as is with only a 7-inch tablet model, Alcatel also unveiled the One Touch Tab 8 HD.

alcatel-one-touch-tab8-hd-540

As implied by the 8 in the name, this tablet will arrive sporting an 8-inch (1024 x 768) IPS display along with a dual-core 1.6GHz processor, 1GB of RAM and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Other hardware specs include 8GB of internal storage space, a microSD card slot, a VGA quality front-facing camera and a 2 megapixel rear-facing camera.

Looking back at the One Touch Evo 7 HD tablet that we saw earlier in the week and we find a similar set of specs. Well, with the exception of the display size and internal storage. The Evo 7 HD has a slightly smaller display, but one that is a bit higher in resolution — 1280 x 800. The One Touch 8 HD on the other hand, has 8GB of internal storage as opposed to the 4GB on the Evo 7 HD. Of course, in either case you will likely want to take advantage of that memory card slot.

All that being said, the Alcatel One Touch Tab 8 HD does have some time before a release. According to details provided by Alcatel, the tablet is expected to make its way to the US in Q3 2013. The tablet will be priced at $179. Bottom line here, while not perfect and maybe not living up to everything that we have seen with the Nexus 7, we would be lying if we were to say that the One Touch Tab 8 HD didn’t have some potential.

Samsung Galaxy S II Plus announced with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean

Posted: 10 Jan 2013 06:17 AM PST

Putting an end to another series of rumors, Samsung has officially announced the Galaxy S II Plus. That being said, while Samsung was forthcoming in terms of the specs (and images), they have yet to offer anything in terms of a price or a release date. Not to mention, which markets the Galaxy S II Plus is expected to come available in.

samsung-galaxy-s-ii-plus-white

Those missing bits aside, lets get into those specs. The handset will be running Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean along with the TouchWiz user interface. The display will measure in at 4.3-inches. Or more specifically, it will be a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display with a resolution of 480 x 800.

Other goodies here include a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, a 1650 mAh battery, 2 megapixel front-facing camera, 8 megapixel rear-facing camera, GPS, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 3.0 and a microSD card slot with 8GB of internal storage. According to the spec sheet from Samsung, the Galaxy S II Plus will be available in two variants, one with, and one without NFC. The handset will weigh in at 121 grams and measure in at 125.3 x 66.1 x 8.5mm (with the NFC version measuring in just a tad thicker at 8.9mm).

Connectivity will arrive as 3G HSPA+ (21Mbps) on the 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100MHz bands and GSM on the 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900MHz bands. Otherwise, given this is a Samsung device with TouchWiz — you can expect to find the usual array of pre-loaded apps and services including Samsung Apps along with the Readers Hub, Music Hub, Video Hub, S Voice, AllShare Play and more. Finally, you will also find access to the Google Play store.

Pantech Perception 4G LTE with an HD screen leaks for Verizon

Posted: 09 Jan 2013 05:04 PM PST

While we’ve all been busy at CES, including the folks from Pantech and Verizon, somewhere a nice new image has leaked to our friend at @evleaks showing an impressive new smartphone coming soon. A new device being called the Pantech Perception leaked this week complete with Verizon branding so should hopefully be coming soon. Read on for more details on this budget phone.

Pantech_Perception_VZW

The Pantech Marauder on Verizon isn’t quite a top tier device, but this new phone in the works is certainly a step in the right direction. Like the recently released Pantech Discover HD on AT&T, the Perception rocks a 720p display. This is just their second HD powered smartphone to grace the US market and we have all the details.

According to the leaks provided the Pantech Perception is paired with what we’re hearing is a 4.8-inch display with a 1280 x 720p HD display, a powerful 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor from Qualcomm, 1GB of RAM, and that’s all we know at this point. Internal storage, battery and camera specs, as well as final version of Android is still up in the air.

The other important part of this leak is the price, as we still don’t know what it’ll be. Hopefully Pantech isn’t going away from their usual pricing and this quality device with near top end specs will match previous devices. The Discover is just $49 with a new 2-year contract, and we’re hopeful for the same low price once the Perception arrives for Verizon Wireless. Stay tuned for additional details coming soon.

Samsung 8-core Exynos 5 Octa chip announced

Posted: 09 Jan 2013 12:32 PM PST

NVIDIA unveiled the Tegra 4 processor earlier in the week and now we have some big processor news coming from Samsung. Simply put, they have officially announced the Exynos 5 Octa chip. Samsung has said that this chip is the world's first mobile application processor to implement the ARM big.LITTLE processing technology from the Cortex A15 processor.

Exynos-4-Quad_1-580x406

Perhaps more exciting sounding, the Exynos 5 Octa chip (as implied by the name) will consist of a total of eight cores. This will be broken down as four Cortex-A15 processors and four Cortex-A7 cores. Samsung has said that this will allow for the A15 processors to handle processing-intense tasks with the A7 cores handling the lighter workloads. In other words, Samsung is looking towards efficiency.

In fact, Samsung has stated that this Exynos 5 Octa chip will be up to 70 percent higher energy efficiency as compared to the previous quad-core Exynos. Not to mention, that the Exynos 5 Octa will be able to handle multiple applications as well as multiple tabs and even HD video without issue.

The chip will also support 3D, which could mean good things 3D gaming related may be coming in the future. Samsung demonstrated the processing power with round of Need for Speed Most Wanted. Of course, that is similar to how we saw NVIDIA show off the Tegra 4 with a round of Dead Trigger 2. That all being said, at this point we are not expecting to find the Exynos 5 Octa in anything but high-end devices and even then, it may be a little while before it arrives in a handset near you.

Pebble smartwatch hands-on video and interview with Eric Migicovsky

Posted: 09 Jan 2013 11:58 AM PST

Without question, it seems that one of the highlights of CES 2013 was Pebble. Which, considering the product was originally expected to ship back in September of 2012 — who would have guessed. Of course, considering how the Kickstarter took off, it seems many would have been more surprised had they met that shipping time. Regardless though, as we saw in the Pebble press conference from earlier today, the watches will begin shipping on January 23.

pebble_smartwatch_hands-on_sg_11

Along with the shipping date, our sister site SlashGear managed to grab some pics and some video of the Pebble. And in addition to a hands-on video, they also have a brief video interview with Eric Migicovsky. The interview talks a bit about how nice the hardware is, but Eric really just seems to be happy that these watches will finally begin arriving in customers hands.

pebble_smartwatch_hands-on_sg_5

He noted that the Kickstarter backers are the number one priority. And interestingly enough, the pre-orders that came after the Kickstarter period have climbed into the “tens of thousands.” Of course, those who ordered after the Kickstarter project ended will have a bit longer to wait for delivery.

pebble_smartwatch_hands-on_sg_4

Another interesting bit here, Eric was asked about the secret sauce, you know, what made the Pebble so successful given we have seen other similar items in the past. He went on to say that they managed to piece together the puzzle in the precise way to capture peoples imagination. Of course, that puzzle came as part of a mix of items including how smartphones are immensely popular at the moment along with a combination of the e-paper screen and battery life.
