From the rumor mill: Motorola X phone to be sold cheaply on Google Play, unlockable on Verizon, and available on multiple carriers

Posted: 22 Jan 2013 10:48 AM PST

Over at Droid-Life, there’s some inside information leaking that may or may not be of any actual value… but we can hope. The rumor mill is now pushing hard on the Motorola X phone, and dropping lists like the following:

  • Motorola X Phone will be announced at Google I/O in May.
  • Current target for release is July 8 (definitely subject to change).
  • All carriers will sell the X Phone.
  • Verizon will sell it for $299 on contract.
  • All versions will also be sold through the Google Play store at similar off-contract price to Nexus line.
  • If you want to unlock the bootloader through Verizon, they will charge a $15/month fee.
  • If you buy it through Google Play, it comes unlocked with no fee.
  • Not a "Nexus" but will come running stock Android and with some bloatware.
  • Bloatware can apparently be removed once unlocked.

In case you’re wondering, yes… the 4th from the bottom says unlocking from Verizon for $15 / month. Weird, for sure. What do you think? Be sure to let us know in the comments.

HTC Sense 5 UI revealed in leaked screenshots

Much is being made of the upcoming HTC M7, especially the fact that it is one of HTC’s biggest risks to date. The company is looking to gain back the market share given up to Samsung and other players over the last few quarters and is hoping for a much more profitable 2013. To do that, the M7 and any other new smartphones will need to be a hit.

One way in which HTC was able to stand out in the crowd was the way the Sense UI experience helped jazz up the Android experience. But, after a few years and seemingly similar iterations, the once-polished and friendly user interface looks dated.

The HTC M7 is slated to be the first Android smartphone to employ the Sense 5 UI, however previous models may get a new lease on life with a software update down the road. So, if you’re wondering exactly what Sense 5 might look like, wonder no more.

The seven screenshots accompanying this post come from a leaked ROM found over at XDA forums. The photos you see here are said to be running on a Droid DNA but originate from a Sprint version of the M7. For what it’s worth, rumors suggest that all four major carriers will offer the flagship device.

Specifications are right on track with what we expected and include the following:

  • 5.0-inch (1,080 x 1,920 pixel resolution) Full HD; TFT LCD
  • Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
  • APQ8064 1.7 GHz Quad Core processor
  • 3000mAh battery
  • 4G LTE
  • NFC
  • 13.1-megapixel camera (rear)
  • 2.4-megapixel camera (front)
  • One-Seg terrestrial digital broadcasting
  • V-High Multimedia Broadcasting Services (NOTTV™)

The LG Optimus G Pro is expected in early April 2013 so we may expect to see some more noise around this at Mobile World Congress. Hopefully we get to see this one come stateside in the next few months.

Samsung Galaxy S4 reportedly operating under code name of Altius

Posted: 22 Jan 2013 07:32 AM PST

The puzzle pieces for the Samsung Galaxy S4 continue to come together slowly but surely. Today sees us learning that the alleged code name for the project is ‘Altius‘.  We like the play on words, especially as they pertain to a galaxy. As some know, Citius, Altius, Fortius, is latin for “Faster, Higher, Stronger”AKA the Olympic motto.

Higher works for us.
