Sense 5 on HTC’s Droid DNA images surface

Posted: 21 Jan 2013 01:01 PM PST

While we expect Sense 5 to first appear on HTC’s upcoming M7 smartphone, it’s nice to see it running on some of HTC’s current smartphones such as the DNA. Whether you like Sense or not, Sense does have a huge fan-base and the 5th iteration looks promising to the eye. Hopefully HTC has lightened Sense down a bit as compared to their previous versions.

What do you think, does Sense look better to you now or still don’t care for it?

FYI— Nexus 10 Tablets Are Officially Out Of Stock In Play Store… Again

Posted: 21 Jan 2013 10:53 AM PST

It’s no secret that Google has had some serious inventory issues with its Nexus 4 smartphones, but we are now seeing some epic problems with the Nexus 10 tablet as well. Reports are coming in that both the 16GB and 32GB variations of the tablets are completely sold out in the Play Store for US residents. So unless you try going to your local retailer and hope they have something in stock, you may just be better off waiting for Google’s next great tablet at it’s I/O sometime in May.

Hopefully Google and Samsung gets everything together and will have new stock sooner than later though. We will be sure to keep you all abreast of any news of when more Nexus 10 stock will become available.

Posted: 21 Jan 2013 10:04 AM PST

So you find that the Handcent notifications are too dull or the stock messaging app notifications are just too simplistic for you? Well great you’re in luck because Glowfly brings a solid alternative of notification alerts for all you obsessive texters out there. Essentially, users will get an Ice Cream Sandwich-themed notification center that allows for everything from giving a quick reply to seeing an MMS pic in a pop-up to even being able to show pop-ups from a lock screen. Oh and best of all– the app is Google Voice-friendly too, so with some minor fiddling and customizing, users will be able to have some pretty nifty Google Voice notifications as well.

The app is available for a mere 99 cents which is not only pretty inexpensive, but best of all— 50% of all Glowfly proceeds go to a cancer patient in need— and who doesn’t want to own a cool app while trying to beat cancer?

Samsung Galaxy S III Mini Adds NFC, Going On Sale This Month

Posted: 21 Jan 2013 09:58 AM PST

Samsung announced it will release a Galaxy S III Mini with NFC in the UK. And it will do so soon. Samsung said it will be available this month so our Brit buds will get their chance at the S III Mini within the next ten days. I guess Sammi figured the Mini should probably have S Beam capabilities after it had featured the easy-sharing capability in so many of its ads.

The S III Mini is a sort-of shrunk down version of the Galaxy S III, however, the specs were reduced along with the screen size. The Mini has a 4-inch SuperAMOLED display, 1GHz dual-core processor, 1 single GB of RAM and runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. This can’t really be considered an update since the specs are identical to the Mini without NFC. The device is a decent option for those looking for a smaller mid-tier phone but the “S III” name is a bit misleading.

Press Release after the break

SAMSUNG ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF GALAXY S III MINI WITH NFC
New NFC variant set to hit shops at end of January

21st January 2013, London, UK – Samsung Mobile UK today announced that an NFC-enabled version of the Galaxy S III Mini smartphone will be available to buy in the UK from the end of January.

Owners of the new Galaxy S III Mini will be able to share content, such as photos, videos and music, much faster and more easily. Its S Beam feature allows a 10MB music file to be shared in just two seconds by simply tapping on another S Beam-enabled device, such as the Galaxy S III or Galaxy Note II, even without a Wi-Fi or cellular signal. By combining NFC and Wi-Fi Direct, S Beam is capable of sending larger files between phones, such as images, videos and music tracks.

The Galaxy S III Mini is powered by Android™ 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and packed with many of the same features available on the Galaxy S III, including S Voice which people can use to tell the phone to wake up, answer an incoming call, or even take a photo, and Direct Call which allows customers to automatically call someone they've just received a text by simply lifting the phone to their ear.

Simon Stanford, Vice President, Telecommunications & Networks, Samsung UK and Ireland said:

"NFC technology and the digital wallet started to gain significant traction in 2012, particularly in the run up to the Olympics. It's an exciting time in the mobile market watching the next phase of its evolution take shape, so we're happy to announce that we are bringing these new experiences to our customers through our growing number of NFC-enabled devices."

The Galaxy S III Mini will be available to buy in the UK across all major networks, key high street and out of town electrical retailers and online retailers from the end of January.

The Sony Xperia Z looks to be one step closer to going on sale stateside. The posted FCC documents appear to indicate Sony’s sleek and water resistant Android handset has passed inspection and deemed safe for the American market. The inspection process also gave us a chance to take a peek inside this guy. A few European sites have begun pre-sales, in the UK and Slovakia, but US consumers still have a couple months to go. CyanogenMod 10.1 M-Builds arrive for several devices

Posted: 21 Jan 2013 07:37 AM PST

If you’re a fan of the rooting/hacking/modding scene you’ve inevitably heard about the famous CyanogenMod ROM. The great customizations found on this ROM are unbelievable. The problem is, it can often take a long time to get a fully stable build out to users. To remedy this situation, the Cyanogen team has come up with a new strategy, release a (mostly) stable build once a month called the “M-Build“. The M-Build will be almost entirely free of bugs and ready for daily use. Yesterday, CyanogenMod and friends released their first set of M-Builds based on Android 4.2 for a series of popular devices. Check below the break to see if your device is supported. I installed an M-Build on my Nexus S last night and it’s running great! If you’ve got one of the devices listed below, get to it! You’ve got nothing to lose! Be sure to read our Rooting dictionary for beginners if you’re new to all of this.

We're building M for these devices:

Sony announces 10.1-inch quad-core Sony Xperia Tablet Z

Posted: 21 Jan 2013 07:22 AM PST

A few days ago we started our watch for a new tablet device from Sony to complement their Sony Xperia Z smartphone. The wait did not take long as Sony has announced plans to release the Sony Xperia Tablet Z to the Japanese market this spring. The 10.1-inch tablet will have a full 1080p HD screen running on top of a quad-core Snapdragon S4 cpu running at 1.5GHz.

Sony has packed some other nice features into the tablet including an 8.1MP camera that incorporates some of their technology like Exmor R for mobile for grabbing stunning photos, notably in low light situations. Sony also incorporates S-Force Front Surround 3D sound, NFC capability, and a level of water- and dustproofing. The device will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and is LTE capable. Initial color choices include black and white.

Sony has not released a specific date of availability nor have they released any information regarding other global markets where the device may eventually be released.

Information regarding Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 (Santos) and a new high end (Roma) tablet leak

Posted: 21 Jan 2013 06:47 AM PST

We already know about the Galaxy Note 8.0, but in the not so surprising news of the week, it looks like Samsung is prepping Galaxy Tab 3 tablets as well as a high end tab for the first half of this year. The Galaxy Tab series has been their bread and butter, and this year won’t be any different. Going under the codename “Santos” we are hearing that the Tab 3 will again come in two sizes. We can expect the same standard 10.1-inch variant and something around 7-inches. It could end up being upgraded to 7.7-inches, but nothing is final. The only spec detail that was revealed is that they will each sport a 5MP rear camera. We also have the model numbers: GT-P3200, GT-P3210, GT-P5200 and GT-P5210. If you’re doing the math, you noticed there are 4 models and that’s because we can expect to see WiFi-only and 3G (or 4G) versions.

Next up is the is the flagship tablet, which will be the GT-P8200. It’s currently going under the codename “Roma” and will also sport a 5MP camera and come in two storage options, 16GB and 32GB. Unfortunately nothing else was given. Hopefully we will see the new Exynos 5 Octa in this bad boy and I would expect to see a display similar to the Nexus 10. Who knows, maybe it will sport the new Youm flexible display.

Last but not least, we already told you most of the specs of the Galaxy Note 8.0, but the processor is now confirmed to be a 1.6GHz quad-core.

More pictures of the HTC M7 with Sense 5.0 surface

Posted: 21 Jan 2013 06:08 AM PST

As far as pre-announcement rumors, I think it’s safe to say that last year’s One X didn’t get quite the attention that this year’s “M7″ is getting. For whatever reason, it seems as though leaks for the upcoming HTC “M7″ are coming in on a daily basis. Could it be that HTC is trying to create a little hype? Yesterday we saw a render that was as close to the real thing as possible, but today we have real pictures of what looks like the final phone. It really doesn’t look much different than the render we saw yesterday, but since it’s a real phone in hand, it adds credibility. There’s also a bonus in that we have more images of Sense 5.0.

As you can see the design isn’t much different than what we have been seeing from HTC lately. It takes cues from the 8X and the DROID DNA. The most glaring thing I can take out of yesterday’s pic and today images is the swapping of the home and task buttons. What is up with that? Why would HTC change the format all of a sudden and get away from the Google’s stock format? It makes no sense (no pun intended).

Speaking of Sense, similar to the images we have seen in the past, the new UI continues to looks minimalist. We don’t know for sure, but looking at the image on top, there could be a completely new clock widget, which would be the first major change in at least 3 years. There also appears to be newer widgets that in some ways resemble windows 8 tiles.

We are a little over a month away from the official unveiling so I am sure we will be treated to more leaks, but I would say that these pictures are probably reasonably close, but then again, HTC could be playing games with us trying to create a little hype.

Ladies And Gentlemen: Say Hello To The HTC M7 Smartphone

Posted: 20 Jan 2013 06:42 AM PST

While HTC certainly isn’t happy about this tidbit of news, we know that you all will be: the mysterious HTC M7 smartphone that we have been harking about is finally out in full view and ready for us to drool over– despite us seeing another possible rendering recently. As you can see, the render above highlights the device’s sleek and jet black design… which is something that we were already expecting before. In addition, the display and Sense (5.0) UI seems to match up not only in the overall design and layout, but the iconography as well. The great thing is about this design is that while HTC is expected to launch the smartphone in various markets around the world, there should be minimal cosmetic differences of the smartphones— save for items like carrier tramp stamps branding.

All in all if this rendering is indeed legit and the real deal, it appears that HTC will more than likely have yet another hit on its hands. We just hope that the world is ready for another hit when the time comes.
