Evidence Of A White Nexus 4

Posted: 29 Jan 2013 03:00 PM PST

We might have our first view of the white Nexus 4 on the same day the standard black model returned to the Play Store. We heard there might be a white version in the works last year but this is the first time we see any “evidence” of the existence of such a device. Speaking of evidence, there’s not much. Phone Arena reported the image above was submitted by an anonymous source. Examining the EXIF data shows the image was taken by an LG-E975, better known as the Optimus G. While that little piece of information adds an element of intrigue to the story, it does little to validate the authenticity. Put your debunking hats on and hit the source for the full size image. I’ll keep my fingers crossed they release a version with more storage, not more white.

ZTE Blade C Smartphone Officially On The Way, Brings Jelly Bean Goodness For A Budget Price

Posted: 29 Jan 2013 01:28 PM PST

ZTE is continuing its massive 2013 assault by introducing yet another intriguing new device called the the Blade C smartphone. According to the Bluetooth SIG, the Blade C smartphone will also be known as the V807, V889S, and T807 models and will be featured in Chinese and European markets. The Blade C is expected to be targeted at consumers looking for Jelly Bean-powered budget devices as each will not only feature a fairly low pricing point, but the V807 model will have a 4-inch WVGA display, 3MP rear camera, Bluetooth 4.0, a decent dual-core 1 GHz MediaTek MTK 6577 processor, 512MB of RAM and a 1,600 mAh battery— which should more than suffice for those looking to get the most out of a little.

The smartphone is available in China at this time and is on the way to European markets— so the Blade C should be in stores sooner than later. Oh and in case you’re wondering— there’s no word on whether or not we will see the smartphone on American shores, but it’s probably wise not to hold your breath for this puppy.

Possible Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 could hit market before MWC?

Posted: 29 Jan 2013 01:17 PM PST

You’ve seen some pictures, and more pictures, and read the leaked information about the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0, Samsung’s latest version of a device utilizing their S Pen. All indications up to now were that the device would be officially unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. However, European site Mobile Geeks has discovered several online retailers listing the Galaxy Note 8.0 as being available starting on February 19, 2013, about a week prior to MWC. It appears two versions of the GT-N5100, the 3G capable model, will be available with either 16GB of 32GB of memory. There is no information available regarding the GT-N5110 wi-fi only model, but we would expect it to be available at the same time if the dates are accurate.

The question now is whether these sites listing the Galaxy Note 8.0 have revealed actual availability information or whether they are just creating placeholder pages in anticipation of the device being available later in February after MWC.

Featured Android Game Review: Threedot – Catch, Tilt, and Break [Arcade & Action]

Posted: 29 Jan 2013 12:25 PM PST

If you’re looking for a new arcade style game, I have got a good one for you. It’s called Threedot: Catch, Tilt, Break and it’s set in the world of microscopic organisms. This is the first game created by Yurii Osadchyi and I think he has a bright future because this one is a blast. Yurii created three modes of play and each one adds it’s own element of fun.

The object of all three modes is to keep Threedot alive and to kill off as many enemies as you can. There are no level ups or any of that crazy nonsense, just pure old school arcade action. You control Threedot by tilting your phone or tablet in the direction you want to move him.

In Classic Mode you can’t touch any of the enemies unless you infect them with floating bubbles. You do that by touching the floating colored bubbles, which causes them to burst. You will want to do this when enemies are near. If the bursts touch any enemies, it will affect them in a certain manner and you can kill them by simply touching them. It starts out slow, but as things pick up, the enemies continue to multiply. If you’re not efficient at utilizing the bubbles at the right time, there will be way too many organisms flying around and you will have a hard time moving around safely. If you touch any enemies before infecting them you will die, but you have three lives to play with. You will also unlock different colored bubbles as you progress through the game. Each bubble affects enemies differently. Yellow ones are toxic and will slow them down, Blue ones will freeze them, Red ones will make the enemies your friends and will hunt other enemies for you, and Green will destroy all enemies on the screen.

Next up is Crazy Shake Mode. In this mode you will again want to avoid all enemies, and only Green bubbles will be available. This means that anytime you touch a green bubble, it will destroy all the enemies on the screen. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the enemies multiply way faster than Classic Mode so you need to find the bubbles as fast as you can.

Last but not least is the Zen Mode. In this mode things are opposite in that you can kill all enemies by simply touching them (you don’t need to infect them), but there’s a time limit. You are given 60 seconds to start, but you gain an additional 30 seconds for each purple bubble you touch. You can also destroy all enemies by touching green bubbles (only after you have unlocked it from Classic mode). In this mode, the bubbles don’t stay on the screen long so you have to move quickly to get to them.

As you can see each mode offers a completely different challenge, and surprisingly I like all three modes very much. Threedot has some really nice neon graphics and particle effects, and I found it to be very smooth with no stuttering of any kind. If you like to share your scores and see how well you stack up, you can do that via Scoreloop.

You will find both Free and paid versions of the game. The Free version only has the Classic mode with a scoring limit of 5,000 points. You won’t find any unlockable weapons and it isn’t supported by Scoreloop. The paid version adds in the Crazy Shake Mode and Zen Mode as well as unlockable weapons and Scoreloop. It only costs 99-cents. The free version will certainly give you a good feel of how the game is, but I skipped that and went right to the paid version. Check out my hands on video below and hit one of the download links to get started. If you like arcade style games, you will definitely like Threedot, so check it out and let me know what you think.

Airmobs P2P Wi-Fi tethering market could create hotspot market

Posted: 29 Jan 2013 11:17 AM PST

Ever been in one of those locations where your data service has disappeared, but you notice someone on another network chugging away? It would be nice if they could create a mobile hotspot that you could jump on to use instead of resorting to roaming or just doing without service. Later on you could return the favor to someone else. The Viral Spaces research group at MIT is hoping to address these types of situations with the creation of a new community-based P2P Wi-Fi tethering market running on an app they have dubbed Airmobs.

The concept is fairly simple. When you have network access, you fire up the app and let people use your mobile hotspot for their own connection needs. As you do so, the app starts to credit your account. You can then use those credits to “borrow” someone else’s connection when the roles are reversed. The app has controls built in to check for battery life, signal strength, motion, and any data limits you may have set to minimize the impact on your device and your data plan.

One question remains though and that is carrier reaction to the app. The apps creator, Eyal Toledano, recognizes carriers would probably not be interested in users running their own mobile hotspot markets, which is why he is hesitant to release Airmobs to the Google Play Store.

Check out the video below to see some examples of how the system works and then hit the source link if you want more information.

LG Nexus 4 now available for order on Best Buy web site with T-Mobile service

Posted: 29 Jan 2013 08:55 AM PST

Despite problems with order fulfillment from the Google Play store and gaining a reputation akin to a clear shot of a Bigfoot, there are still a lot of people that want to get in on the LG Nexus 4 bandwagon. The desire for the device comes not just from consumers, but from retailers and carriers as well who want to be able to offer it to their customers. The latest example of this is Best Buy, which now lists the LG Nexus 4 with T-Mobile service on their web site. You might be tempted by that language on the site that reads, “Usually ships in 3-5 business days.” However, using the Estimate Arrival Time link I got dates between February 6th and February 11th. Even that may still be quicker than waiting for your opportunity to place an order through the Play Store.

Android grabs 70% of smartphone market share in Q4 2012

Posted: 29 Jan 2013 08:53 AM PST

We’ve already seen some of the numbers for smartphones that were shipped in Q4 2012, but now we get a peek at the numbers that show just how dominant Android really was last year. According to Strategy Analytics, Google’s Android was running on a whopping 70.1% of smartphones shipped over the holiday quarter. That totals out to about 152 million phones, up from 80 million a year ago. Apple’s iOS came in second place with a measly 22%. Year-over-year, there was a 38% growth in smartphone sales in Q4, and a growth of 42.7% over the entire year. And in case you think that Android market grab was a fluke because of the holidays, 68.4% of all devices all year were running Android. which is more than triple of what its fruity nemesis sold. I think it’s safe to say our favorite little robot has achieved global domination, right?

Android bugdroid wind up toys now available for your party favor needs

Posted: 29 Jan 2013 06:44 AM PST

I see a striking similarity between the rock band KISS and Android. KISS was always big in marketing collectibles with their name and now the Android is heading in the same direction with the bugdroid. You remember playing with wind up toys as a kid right? Well why not wind up bugdroids? Yes they are pretty cheap and I’m don’t know if you can really classify this as a collectible, but if you’re an Android fanboy, you will want to check these out. They measure 2.55-inches high by 1.25-inches wide, and they cost $6.80 on eBay for a set of three with free shipping in the U.S. Hit the source link below to get your order in.
