HP Slate 7 hands-on with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

Posted: 24 Feb 2013 10:58 AM PST

In case you missed the news this afternoon, HP has entered the Android tablet game with their very first HP Slate 7 running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. What we have here is a sleek little budget friendly tablet to try and take on the Nexus 7 all for the low price of just $169. Below we have a few hands-on pictures and videos to see if it’s worth your dollar.

HP’s TouchPad was a well-rounded tablet, aside from the operating system that never got feet under its legs. Here however Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, more than 700,000 apps, and a nice little design should make the HP Slate 7 much more successful. The only downfall – the low resolution display. HP opted for a 1024 x 600 resolution slate while everyone else is offering at least 720p HD displays.

Now that we’ve had our hands on it, it basically reminds us 100% of the Nexus 7. Both in the overall design, feel, thickness, weight and all. Obviously this is made of stainless-steel instead of plastics, but has a soft coat red or black option on back to make it comfortable to hold. Sadly the resolution isn’t the only problem, HP also used an unknown 1.6 GHz dual-core processor while the Nexus 7 rocks the Tegra 3 quad-core. Either way it feels good, performs well from our limited chance to see it, so check out the hands-on video below.

With that said, the HP Slate 7 is just 10.7mm thin, lightweight, and comes with a pair of cameras on both the front and back. Obviously the Nexus 7 doesn’t have a rear camera – so that’s a plus here. Then with HP we have micro-SD for extending internal storage, and beats audio integration all on board. It looks and feels nice, was designed well, and is a good first device for HP.

Is this too late to the game, or will the $169 price point lure potential buyers? We’ll see. It will be available in April for just $169 so stay tuned for a full review when that time comes.

Huawei Ascend P2 hands-on

Posted: 24 Feb 2013 09:42 AM PST

Last year Huawei announced one of the world’s thinnest smartphones in the Ascend P1 smartphone, and as expected, this year at Mobile World Congress they’ve just detailed its successor. The Ascend P2 is here complete with an HD display, 13 megapixel, and more yet still comes in super sleek. We’ve seen a few leaks already, but check out the hands-on pictures and all the details below.

Many rumors suggested this would be nearly a flagship smartphone with a 1080p full HD display, but instead Huawei opted for a 4.7-inch 1280 x 720p HD display – but it still looks great. With Sony, HTC, and soon Samsung rocking 1080p displays we expected Huawei to step it up, but we have a feeling more smartphones are coming from them soon.

Not all of the leaks were right, and instead we have a 1.5 GHz quad-core Hisilicon K3V2 processor under the hood, not 1.8 GHz. Then you’ll be enjoying 2 GB of RAM, 16/32GB of storage, micro-SD support, and that impressive 13 megapixel camera. Huawei also tossed in a massive 3,000 mAh battery yet kept the design extremely thin and lightweight.

You’ll enjoy Android 4.1 on board, but it’s been heavily skinned by the manufacturer. So far build quality feels on par with most Huawei devices. A nice blend between HTC’s premium heavy feel and Samsung’s lightweight plastics. They sit right in the middle here with build quality and construction. In select regions the Ascend P2 will support full 4G LTE and 150Mbps download speeds and more. We’ll update as soon as we know more regarding pricing and full availability.

HP Slate 7 detailed with 4.1 Jelly Bean and dual-core for $169

Posted: 24 Feb 2013 09:01 AM PST

This afternoon in Barcelona the folks from HP have officially entered the Android tablet game. We heard rumors it was coming, and now it’s confirmed. Today HP has announced a new 7-inch Android tablet that they hope will take on the Nexus 7, and other budget friendly slates. With mid-range specs and a low price can this dual-core lower resolution tablet compete for $169? Read on for all the details.

After a failed HP TouchPad that is still alive running Android ports, the PC giant has officially entered the Android market with their first 7-inch Android 4.1 Jelly Bean tablet. The specs match up with the Nexus 7 in most areas although the two most important parts were sadly forgotten. Those being the processor, and the screen resolution.

The HP Slate 7 comes with a 7-inch 1024 x 600 resolution display, and only a 1.6 GHz dual-core Cortex-A9 processor but no additional details on the CPU were given. You’ll be enjoying 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage as well as a micro-SD slot for expanded storage options. They’ve tossed in a 3 megapixel rear and VGA front camera for Google+ Hangouts, and the entire tablet is only 10.7 mm thin.

HP’s new 7-inch Android 4.1 Jelly Bean tablet is the first Android slate to rock integrated Beats Audio for superior sound. If it sounds anything like the HP TouchPad it will have some of the best sound available for an Android tablet. The entire slate is made of a stainless-steel frame and will be offered in steel, black or red color options. HP’s also announced their HP ePrint app for wireless printing on the go and more. We’ve just learned all the details and will report back with some hands-on impressions shortly. The HP Slate 7 will be available in April for $169.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 hands-on: Phone features included

Posted: 23 Feb 2013 06:00 PM PST

After all the leaks and rumors today the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 is finally official. Samsung just revealed their new daring 8-inch tablet, and we have all the details. Live in Barcelona for MWC we’ve already got our paws all over it. We’d rather not call this a phablet, but this truly is because its got full phone and voice features included. We might not get the phone model in the US, at least not initially, but read on for all the details.

The leaks and rumors were true and Samsung has just announced their Galaxy Note 8.0 complete with 3G voice and calling functions. Then you’ll obviously be able to enjoy all those other amazing features we’ve come to love from the Galaxy Note lineup. Complete with their S-Pen stylus and all those features, you’ll want to check out the hands-on video below.

The Galaxy Note rocks an 8.0-inch 1280 x 800 pixel resolution 189PPI display, and of course we’ll be working with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. It’s powered by an Exynos 1.6 GHz quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM, and they’ll be offering both 16 and 32GB models – micro SD slot included. Users can also enjoy a 5 megapixel rear camera, and a 1.3 facing front shooter. The 3G version of this device comes in at 210.8 x 135.9mm small with 338g for the weight.

That S-Pen stylus on a beautiful 8-inch screen looks nice right? We’ll have to test those call functions (and the look on peoples faces) once the tablet actually hits the market. You’ll also get A-GPS and GLONASS, as well as the usual WiFi, Bluetooth, AllShareCast and usual sensors. Then Samsung also added the popular IR blaster to control your Samsung TV’s at home. Or any TV for that matter using the Peel Android application.

Everything we love about the Samsung Galaxy Note lineup is on board here, with all those multi-window modes and true multitasking capabilities. Then Samsung even have a new Wacom digitizer and the dedicated menu and back buttons work with the stylus – we know you guys all will be happy about that! There's also a brand new exclusive Flipboard app made specifically for the Galaxy Note 8.0, complete with pop-up previews when you hover with your S-Pen. You can enjoy Popup Note, Popup Video, and Air View all right out of the box as well.

The design follows the recent Galaxy lineup, but has a very solid and durable feel. The aluminum sides are great in the hand and it’s certainly comfortable to use. This is Samsung’s answer to the Nexus 7 and the iPad mini, that’s for sure. We have no official price or release date, but Samsung states it will be available in the 2nd quarter of this year. Hopefully a few US carriers jump on board the phone capabilities, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Google Glass will tether through Android smartphones

Posted: 23 Feb 2013 02:02 PM PST

Google Glass is going to be Google’s 2013 game-changing phenomenon when it rolls out at the end of this year. The new accessory will be priced somewhere around $1500, meaning that the average consumer may opt against purchasing it. It offers a bunch of nifty features, like being able to do a quick search, navigating the streets via a turn-by-turn overlay, and being able to take pictures and record video with voice commands and/or a few button clicks.

Google Glass will tether through Android smartphones

One very convenient feature that Google Glass will have is the ability to tether 3G or 4G data directly from your Android smartphone (as well as iPhones). While you can connect your Google Glass to a Wi-Fi internet connection, chances are while you’re walking around, you’re not going to have access to a stable Wi-Fi connection. That’s when you whip out your smartphone and you pair it with your Google Glass via Bluetooth.

This feature should help alleviate some costs associated with Google Glass, because you’re already going to burn a $1500 hole in your wallet. Having consumers pay an extra data fee for the accessory may not be very appealing, and users will require a constant connection to the internet for Google Glass to function properly.

Google Glass should be available by the end of this year, and that’s also around the same time frame that Google’s retail stores should begin appearing. People will be able to test out Google Glass before they spend a fortune on it. It’s a great marketing strategy to give people a hands-on feel for the product, because even with Google’s name, selling a $1500 accessory could be a very challenging feat. Does Google Glass interest you?
