Samsung to employ multiple processor types for Galaxy S4, report indicates

We’re but a few weeks away from finding out officially, but Samsung looks to  be using multiple processor types for the flagship Galaxy S4. Reportedly, the U.S. model will house a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 chipset while the rest of the world, namely Europe,  gets a Samsung Exynos 5 Octa. As was the case for the Galaxy S III, the former will be used for our 4G LTE networks while the latter is for the areas where it is not so widespread.

Recent rumors suggested that Samsung had dropped its own processor in favor of the Qualcomm chip but this new report somewhat clears things up. In essence, we should expect both.

5 Apps for Rooted Devices

Posted: 27 Feb 2013 09:51 AM PST

After rooting your device, there are so many new features to explore, lets start with a few of the first apps you should download. Since rooting allows you to customize your device even more, these apps allow you to really tweak your phone out to the max.

unnamed-1Rom Manager: Rom Manger is probably one of the most important apps for any rooted user. Rom Manager allows you to manage backups, roms, and custom recoveries. Basically, this app helps to simplify the entire process of flashing and managing custom Roms. The app is initially free, although you will have to pay $5.99 to receive rom update notifications, nightly rom downloads, and an ad free application.

unnamed-4Root Explorer: Root Explorer is my personal favorite application for managing my files, you can zip/unzip files, edit root folders, and access device info easily. Root Explorer allows you to do tasks like change your device info to run apps (Google Wallet on Verizon, etc) that were not intended for the said device. This is another must have in the world of Android rooting. Root Explorer costs $3.99 on the Play store with no free version available.

unnamed-5Titanium Backup: If you plan on flashing any custom roms, you will without-a-doubt need this application. Titanium Backup allows you to make a complete 100% backup of all your applications and system data. You can then use this data to restore all of your apps once to have successfully flashed to a new rom. Titanium Backup is free on the play store with an optional “Pro Key” for $6.85. Buy the pro key! Titanium Backup is definitely one of the best apps I have ever purchased and has saved me hours and hours of time.

unnamed-2SetCPU: SetCPU falls right into the “customization” category of Android applications. SetCPU allows you to change the clock speed of your device and if you are on a custom kernel, you can even overclock your device. Tweaking your devices clock speed to have pretty major affects on your device as far as performance and battery life goes. With SetCPU’s simple user interface, you are just a few taps away from saving a few hours of battery or making your phone faster than ever. SetCPU will run you just $1.99 on the play store.

unnamed-3WiFi Tether: WiFi Tether is very self explanatory, it allows you to tether your phone’s data connection to a wifi enable device. WiFi Tether has been my go to app since the days of the Droid X and now with my S3′s 4G connection, my laptop and nexus 7 will never be offline again. You can also create a security id, mange your network name, and manage the connected devices. Best part of all, WiFi Tether is free on the play store. Be careful, some networks will see the spike in data usage and throttle your data speeds.

Samsung takes on Google Wallet, Apple Passbook with Samsung Wallet

Posted: 27 Feb 2013 06:31 AM PST

samsung_wallet_unveiled

Samsung today announced a coupon and ticketing service not unlike Apple’s Passbook or Google Wallet. Called Samsung Wallet, the app and service comes with an API (beta) for developers which should spur adoption and integration. Already working with Samsung are Expedia, MLB, Hotels.com, and Booking.com. The app will advise users to nearby Wallet-friendly locations for retail, restaurants, etc.

Unveiling Wallet at its Developer Day at Mobile World Congress, Samsung explains that it has launched the tool with an open API, allowing users to save tickets, boarding passes, coupons and similar cards to the app and access them from a central hub.

With this move, Samsung takes yet another step toward becoming self-reliant and pushing Google out of the picture. Combining Samsung Wallet and the upcoming Visa PayWave integration into future devices, Google Wallet becomes less relevant.

Comparing the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 to the iPad Mini

Posted: 27 Feb 2013 06:19 AM PST

Samsung last weekend announced a new member of the Galaxy Note family with the release of the 8-inch model. Due in the coming weeks, it’s about as close to the Apple iPad Mini as it gets. Not only do the screen sizes closely resemble each other, but it’s Apple and Samsung all over again. And if you know much about the

As a quick reference, we’ve put together a quick chart that compares the two tablets against each other. Based on the specs alone, it would be logical to say that the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 beats the iPad Mini on multiple fronts. Of course, this is to say nothing about user experience and intangible stuff like integration with other devices and services.

Early Buzz

While we must wait a few more weeks (or months) before we learn the price of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0, we can still get a sense as to what the reactions will be. A number of outlets have spent time with the tablet and have already formed early opinions.

It’s a simple, elegant design with really smooth edges and corners. The Note 8 feels to be made of the same stuff as the Note 10.1, with a bit more metal thrown in for durability sake. With an SD card slot, a home button, and native Jelly Bean support, the Note 8 offers a compelling package. Also, its S-Pen stylus offers a level of functionality the iPad can’t match, and those looking for a highly functional electronic daily planner will want to give it a serious look. Just don’t expect the same level of app support you’d find on the iPad Mini. – CNET

If you’ve spent any amount of time with the Note II, you’ll know what to expect from the Note 8.0… But where the Note 8.0 strays is one of its key improvements: users can now effect the capacitive menu and back buttons using the S Pen. Admittedly, it takes a bit of retraining to get used to — you’ll want to use your finger out of habit — but it’s a wonder Samsung took so long to implement something so crucial… – Engadget

Performance was impressive, but one thing to note is that the 5-megapixel rear camera is next to useless. Then again, using the Note 8.0 as a camera is about as comfortable as attempting to make a phone call on it. – BGR

The Note 8 is exceedingly comfortable to hold, though its plastic body doesn’t have the solid feel of iPad Mini, Nexus 7, and Kindle Fire HD. The bezel is larger than the iPad Mini’s by a good amount, but feels smaller than the Kindle Fire HD’s. It feels like a good compromise between the two. – Gizmodo

Pricing and marketing will be critical to success of the Galaxy Note 8.0; however, we would expect Samsung to go full-on with advertising. We’re not so optimistic on the price as Samsung has yet to price one of their premium devices in a way that pushes people over the edge. Whatever price they are thinking of, we feel like it should be $50 less.
