Featured Android Game Review: Catch The Candy [Casual]

Posted: 06 Feb 2013 11:26 AM PST

The folks at HeroCraft are at it again. We have already reviewed a few games from them and their newest creation, Catch The Candy, just hit the Google Play Store. This one involves an unnamed cute little creature that is trying to reach the candy. It’s kind of like cut the rope in that regard, but in that game you figure out how to get the candy to the main character. In this game you need to figure out how to get the little guy to the candy.

It’s actually based on the hit Flash game so you might already be familiar with it. The main creature has an extendable sticky tail that you will use to move him in a pendulum like way or to push and pull obstacles. It’s quite simple to play. Just tap where you want the sticky tail to go with the hope of maneuvering your little guy to the candy with the fewest moves. You might have to balance on unsteady logs or grip flag poles, and obstacles are plentiful. It’s up to you to figure out what the right path is. It appears easy at first, but it gets hard in a hurry.

Just like most games such as these, you’re graded with the star system. Grab at least one star to unlock the next level, but you only truly master the level when you achieve three stars. There are 58 levels, so there’s enough to keep you going for a while. Right now HeroCraft is running a launch sale, so you can grab it for only 99-cents. That’s 1/5 of the price of a Starbucks drink. If you’re looking for a new puzzle type game, then give Catch The Candy a shot. Check out my hands on video below and hit one of the download links to get started. Let me know what you think.

Game features:

  • 58 Levels set across a variety of different worlds
  • Unique physics-based gameplay
  • Colourful cartoon graphics
  • Hidden ‘Easter Eggs’ to uncover
  • Based on the hit Flash game

As you can see in the various shots, the device has its colorful full HD in plain view showcasing the awesome and sharp display, the gorgeous backing of the device and of course the smooth and stylish curves. Naturally the attractive design will be complimented by some impressive specs including a quad-core 1.8 GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, 8GB of built-in storage, a 13MP camera and Jelly Bean running the show.

The good thing is that while we have been treated to even more photos of the upcoming device, MWC is just around the corner, so we’ll be able to see the device in plain view by then. You folks out there excited about this little toy?

North American monthly mobile data consumption expected to exceed a total of 6 GB per user by 2017

We live in a very different world than our parents and grandparents did. We live in a world where the possibility of a person from California is able to see and communicate with a person in Beirut within a matter of seconds, sometimes even microseconds. The sobering news, however, is while we live in a connected world, that connectivity requires a ton of data to make it possible.

According to Cisco's latest reports, North America is responsible for consuming the most data, per person, per subscription than anyone else in the world. Cisco predicts that within the next 5 years, from now through 2017, you can expect to see an average of over 11 exabytes of data used per month. To put things into perspective, a terabyte is one million gigabytes where an exabyte is one billion. To take it one step further, this would amount to 6GB per user per month. Keep in mind that these mobile devices include smartphones and tablets that are capable of consuming cellular data.

Cisco reports this expected rapid growth will be in part from North America and in part from the Asia-Pacific regions. Cisco is expecting the Asia-Pacific region to account for over 40% of the mobile data traffic by 2017. This number is reportedly up from a prior estimate in 2012 of 35% projected usage by 2016. These numbers tell a story of a new wave of technological advances and they're all going mobile.

With devices becoming more portable with each passing year, mobile data will continue to grow. With upcoming products like Google Glass to current products like the HTC Droid DNA, mobile data is the present and future of wireless technology. Mobile data is a controversial issue, especially when dealing with carrier caps, throttling etc, and will continue to be a major concern and focus of the tech industry for years to come.

Samsung Galaxy Discover Spotted In The Wild, Brings A Pure Android Experience For Budget Customers

Posted: 06 Feb 2013 10:23 AM PST

Samsung_Galaxy_Discover

Samsung has officially taken the wraps off its newest budget-level device that’s headed straight for Straight Talk and Net10′s wireless networks. The device is called the Galaxy Discover and comes with some modest specs including an 800MHz processor, 3.5-inch HVGA display, 2.7GB of storage built-in and a 3-megapixel rear camera. While those specs leave a lot to be desired— the Galaxy Discover does have one thing most (Samsung) devices don’t— a unmolested Android experience. That’s right friends— the Galaxy Discover comes loaded up with stock Ice Cream Sandwich running the show, which gives a surprising treat to potential customers. Of course the Galaxy Discover probably doesn’t have the specs to run a TouchWiz-flavored Ice Cream Sandwich experience, but we don’t think too many potential customers would complain about having stock Android and all.

So while the device is officially out in the open– it is still unclear of when it will be available for purchase for Straight Talk and Net10 customers, but here’s hoping we see the device sooner than later.

HTC Reports January Sales Down 6 Percent Year-On-Year

Who said Android manufacturers didn’t deliver on their word? OK, maybe not always on software updates but HTC is living up to its promise of crappy sales. Earlier this week the Taiwanese giant announced it expected this quarter’s sales numbers to be down as much as 17% over the first quarter of 2012. It turned out January wasn’t quite so bad. HTC reported sales revenue of T$15.54 billion ($527 million US) for the first month of 2013. That figure is 5.9% less than the T$16.52 billion for January 2012. So yes, the M7 is big for HTC.

New HTC teaser lets us know they’re bringing something to life very soon

HTC-alive-soon

That’s HTC’s latest attempt at keeping us salivating over whatever their next announcement is going to be, whether that’s the M7 or something completely different. If nothing else, it’s creepy. A heart melding together with a circuit is an odd choice for attracting attention to a smartphone, but it does seem to fall in line with calling something the Droid DNA, (if they release a phone named after a kidney, I’m not buying it, I don’t care how awesome it is) so this might be a trend for HTC in the future. Or it could be something software related, like a living personal assistant along the lines of Siri or S-Voice. It’s really anyone’s guess at this point, at least until HTC wants to fill us in during their event scheduled later this month.

It looks like LG has some surprises in store for the public in the near-future after generating major buzz from the release of Google’s latest flagship phone, the Nexus 4. On its Facebook page, LG released an image of a gift wrapped box with the cryptic tagline: “New Series Will Be Unveiled”, while encouraging us to wait and “see what surprise LG has in store for you this time, with an unexpected distinction”. With the upcoming Mobile World Conference later this February, LG is ensuring their spot in the most anticipating unveiling category.

What do you think LG is going to unveil? Many are looking forward to the office announcement LG Optimus G Pro which sports a 5-inch 1,920 x 1,080 resolution display, a 1.7Ghz Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU, 2 gigabytes of RAM, 32GB  of internal storage and a 3,000mAh battery. Could this be what LG is hinting at unveiling? What might this “new series” entail for LG and consumers?

More rumors of specific Galaxy S IV dates come to light

Posted: 06 Feb 2013 07:46 AM PST

SGSIV

If this pace keeps up, Galaxy S IV rumors are going to steal all the hype from Mobile World Congress before it even starts. Okay, maybe not, but the rumors are definitely distracting. The latest today comes from SamMobile, who claims to have confirmation from an inside source that Samsung will be announcing the Galaxy S IV on March 15th, which gives them just enough time after MWC to send out some invitations and keep the spotlight on their new flagship. After the announcement, the phone will be released at the start of April, which is a little earlier than the mid-April dates we’ve been seeing.

Like always, European and Asian countries get their hands on the S IV first, while American, Canadian, and Australian carriers will sell the S IV later in May or June. There’s also the standard assortment of accessories Samsung offers with their devices that are slated for a week 15 release in the year, which fits nicely with that early April release. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. Hopefully you guys are more patient than I am.
