Google Play may soon offer newspapers

Posted: 15 Mar 2013 02:34 PM PDT

google_play_black_feature720

The Google Play Store may soon offer various newspapers or news sources, according to details uncovered by Android Police. Digging through some JavaScript files recently, the site found references to the yet-announced features in the web version of the Play Store. We did some poking around as well and saw the following mentions.

  • Please sign in to purchase this News Issue
  • This news issue is now available on your device
  • Please sign in to get this News issue
  • To read Google Play News, you must have a supported Android phone or tablet
  • You have subscribed to this news edition. It is now available on your device

It remains unclear as to what sort of news sources we may be getting from Google; major newspapers from around the country (or globe) seems the obvious choice. Also uncertain is the timing of when all of this takes effect. With Google I/O fast approaching, it stands to reason that this is one of the big reveals at the annual conference.

Just for fun, I’d like to toss out that this could also come in the form of a Google Reader alternative. The timing  might be coincidental, or not. Perhaps Google will sunset Reader in favor of Play News? This might also be hints that Currents could be folded into the Play experience and allow for subscriptions.  The only thing that smells funny is the “News Issue” stuff. RSS doesn’t come in the form of one bit of news; it’s all or nothing.

Would you be willing to purchase individual newspapers or consider an ongoing subscription? Do you think this is a sign that Google Reader could live on? Let’s hear it in the comments!

HTC calls the Samsung Galaxy S4 “mainstream”

Posted: 15 Mar 2013 09:22 AM PDT

Yesterday was a big day for Samsung, as they officially announced the Samsung Galaxy S4, their latest, and arguably most impressive Galaxy device to date.  HTC, for their part, thinks a little bit differently.

HTC recently said that they’ve had enough of this being “quietly brilliant” and now they are going after Apple and Samsung. It seems they are starting with Samsung by targeting the build-quality of the S4.

"With a continuation of a plastic body and a larger screen being the most obvious physical change, Samsung’s new Galaxy pales in comparison to the all-aluminium unibody HTC One. This is more of the same,” it said. "HTC remains the best option for those people looking for the best technology wrapped in premium design. Our customers want something different from the mainstream, who appear to be the target for the Galaxy. Our customers want original cutting-edge technology, mouthwatering design and a premium feel from their mobiles, which is why we created the HTC One."

HTC is really proud of their new HTC One, which is actually an impressive device with its all-aluminium unibody and attractive design. Do you think HTC is right about the Samsung Galaxy S4? Is HTC One really “better” than the S4? Do customers care about how a device feels more than what it does? Does the Samsung Galaxy S4 do more than the HTC One? Is mainstream really all that bad?

gs4_live_hands_on_720You’ve probably been hit over the head with news and reports of the Samsung Galaxy S4 by now. Sorry, it’s the biggest news in the Android space this week (month?) (year?) and it’s got everyone talking. If you have not watched the official announcement from last night, you can do so by heading to YouTube.

For those who have, and are looking for a bit more, we invite you to check out our initial hands-on reaction and impressions. Once you’re done with that, you should definitely browse our gallery of images snagged throughout the evening.

Our own Phil Esposito snapped a few hundred photos last night and we’ve trimmed the list down to a respectable 147 which best get the point across. We pulled out the stuff that can be found in much of the video presentation and selected more original stuff.  Please, feel free to live vicariously through our eyes!

Hands On: Samsung Galaxy S4 [Video]

Posted: 15 Mar 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Tonight in NYC, we were able to take a look at the all new Samsung Galaxy S4. Looking very much like its predecessor, the Galaxy S3, the S4 features a 4.99″ super AMOLED Full HD display and tons of new S-Features. Picking up the phone for the first time you can really feel how thin and light it is, well, its is made of carbon fiber. Coming in at 7.9mm thin, this phone really, really thin, did I mention its thin?

2Flipping the device over you can see the blue or white back plate, which is very much resembles the Galaxy S3. Look up just an inch or so and you see the 13MP Camera. From my immediate testing, it seems pretty decent, but we all know that can change. Unfortunately, I was unable to send myself the sample pictures. The front facing camera looked great as well, its 2MP and really seemed to display colors and contrast pretty accurately.

3Alas, we have reached the star of the S4, the screen. The Galaxy S4 boasts a beautiful 4.99″ screen, which looks, for lack of a better word, amazing. Compared to an iPhone 5, it doesn’t compare. As of right now, the only phone I can really compare would be the HTC One. Colors look vibrant, Blacks look black and paired with the specs underneath, this phone is some serious competition.

4

Samsung really pack the S4 with everything imaginable, except metal. The light weight is great, but the S4 still feels like a piece of plastic, which brings the overall value down (just a bit). Seriously, compared to the HTC One, the S4 feels like a toy. But don’t take this the wrong way, the screen, speed and software are what makes this phone one of the best.

5After taking in the million-and-one new features of the S4, it really is a great piece of kit. Granted, I was unable to try most of the new S-Features due to the environment and pre-production software. So the real questions is; Will this phone be as popular as the Galaxy S3? The answer is a definite yes.
