newspaper_full_original

Do you know what love to do with our Android handsets and tablets? We ‘re huge fans of changing the home screen around a bit and creating a new user experience. That’s why we present a weekly series of Get This Look posts.

In a nutshell we show you a new look for your Android handset and tell you which apps you’ll need if you want to mimic the feel. Some of these are a little easier to create than others and many of them can be tweaked to no end. The following details are but the ingredients to which you can create your own delicious Android dish; your results will vary. Which is awesome!

If nothing else, this is a great way to discover new apps, widgets, icons, and more!

Newspaper by Burro

WHY WE LOVE THIS LOOK:

For starters, this is unlike any of the other designs we have highlighted in this series. We like the faded papyrus and antiquated/faded newspaper background as the text pops off nicely. The faded grey icons look good on on the right side, while the text links on the left also gives quick access to some of the more popular apps.

As is the case with any good home screen experience, we have at-a-glance looks at weather, time, alarms, and upcoming appointments.  While we think there could be more uniform approach to the font, it’s not a deal-breaker.

The manner in which RSS or news feeds are displayed on the right hand side looks sharp and adds to the newspaper effect.

It’s worth noting that three of the paid apps listed in last week’s edition are also used in Newspaper.

HTC One coming to T-Mobile for as low as $99

Posted: 26 Mar 2013 11:06 AM PDT

T-Mobile just announced that it is officially moving to no-contract plans, where it will offer a “new” way to buy phones. Along those lines, The Verge is reporting that T-Mobile will launch the Samsung Galaxy S4 on May 1. Let’s pile it on, shall we?

It is rumored that T-Mobile will launch the HTC One for $99 up-front, presumably with a $15-$20 monthly installment plan to pay off.

htc_one_cropped2It will be available in form of 24-month plan, which can be cancelled anytime, provided the cost of the phone is fully paid. With T-Mobile cranking up their game, do you think it is time AT&T and Verizon should start taking T-Mo more seriously? Tell us about it in the comment box below.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 will arrive at T-Mobile USA on May 1, reports The Verge. While the carrier has yet to officially spell out any details on the launch whatsoever, we’re inclined to agree with the blog. Why? Because those dudes know their stuff and likely have the inside scoop.

It remains unclear what pricing will be for the Samsung Galaxy S4, however rumors suggest it could be along the lines of $99 up front with a 24 installment plan of $20 a month.

T-Mobile ‘UNcarrier’ era begins with groundbreaking changes

Posted: 26 Mar 2013 10:06 AM PDT

tmobile_uncarrier_720

T-Mobile today officially kicked off the new UNcarrier era with a number of groundbreaking changes. Not only has the carrier done away with contracts and long-term obligations, they have also announced the first seven markets for its 4G LTE network. What’s more, T-Mobile has outlined which devices will be offering support for the 4G data connection.

Details from today’s event include the following:

  • Simple ChoiceEliminates restrictive annual service contracts and seeks to take the pain and confusion out of the wireless experience, by moving to one simple rate plan with unlimited text, talk and web — allowing customers to upgrade their devices anytime they want.
  • 4G LTE NetworkT-Mobile launched its state-of-the art 4G LTE network in seven major metropolitan areas, including: Baltimore, Houston, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Phoenix, San Jose, and Washington, D.C. The 4G LTE network will be delivering breakneck speeds to 100 million Americans by mid-year and 200 million by the end of 2013.
  • New Lineup of 4G LTE DevicesT-Mobile announced today that it will have several 4G LTE capable devices, including the upcoming availability of iPhone 5, as well as the Samsung Galaxy S 4, BlackBerry Z10, T-Mobile Sonic 2.0 Mobile HotSpot LTE, Samsung Galaxy Note II and HTC One.

T-Mobile Makes Bold "Un-carrier" Moves

Announces radically simple unlimited plan; axes contracts, unbundles cost of plan and device with lowest upfront costs, lights up 4G LTE network

NEW YORK — March 26, 2013 — T-Mobile has been talking the talk; now it's walking the walk. The company, known for its "Un-carrier" attitude, today announced a series of moves to address consumer frustration with the unnecessary cost and complexity of wireless.

The moves include radically simplifying its lineup of consumer rate plans to one incredibly affordable plan for unlimited talk, text and Web; ensuring that customers never have to sign another annual service contract through T-Mobile retail outlets; and enabling customers to get the most popular smartphones whenever they want for the lowest upfront cost. T-Mobile also debuted its blazing fast 4G LTE network service in seven major metropolitan areas.

"These bold moves serve notice that T-Mobile is canceling its membership in the out-of-touch wireless club," said John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile USA, Inc. "This is an industry filled with ridiculously confusing contracts, limits on how much data you can use or when you can upgrade, and monthly bills that make little sense. As America's Un-carrier, we are changing all of that and bringing common sense to wireless."

Un-Restricted, Un-Limited

Central to today's announcement is a radically simple approach to consumer rate plans — the Simple Choice Plan. A break from industry norms, the Simple Choice Plan eliminates restrictive annual contracts, taking pain and confusion out of the wireless experience.

What could be simpler than one consumer rate plan?

Simple Choice asks customers two basic questions: How many lines do you need, and how much high-speed data would you like? Customers start with one line at $50 per month for unlimited talk, text and Web with 500MB of high-speed data. Customers can add a second phone line for $30 per month, and each additional line is just $10 per month. They can also add 2 GB of high-speed data for $10 per month more per line. Unlimited 4G data is only $20 more per month per line. No caps. No overages. Just simple value.

Also, because T-Mobile is the only major U.S. wireless company to stop requiring consumers to sign annual service contracts, customers have far more flexibility with how they buy and use wireless devices. Traditionally, getting a good deal on a new phone has meant agreeing to an expensive service for two years. Upgrades typically weren't allowed (without significant upfront costs) until contracts expired, and it was often difficult to ascertain the true value of a device offer because it was tied to a long-term annual contract.

With T-Mobile's un-restricted approach, customers can purchase great devices, pay for them in affordable, interest-free monthly installments, and upgrade anytime they like — not just when their carrier says it's okay. Customers can even use their own unlocked device. Monthly statements are easy to understand since the price stays constant from month to month, and the device cost is clear and unmistakable.

Customers can find more information about T-Mobile's Simple Choice Plan at nationwide T-Mobile retail stores, on http://www.T-Mobile.com, and through select dealers and national retail stores.

Un-Beatable Prices on LTE Devices

In tandem with the debut of its 4G LTE network service, T-Mobile also announced today that it will have several 4G LTE-capable devices available, including Samsung Galaxy S 4, BlackBerry Z10, HTC One, T-Mobile Sonic 2.0 Mobile HotSpot LTE and Samsung Galaxy Note II.

  • Samsung Galaxy S® 4 is the next generation of Samsung's popular Galaxy line of smartphones. Exact pricing and timing of availability have not been announced, but the Galaxy S 4 will be available in the second quarter of this year.

It will be sold through all T-Mobile channels. For more information about the mobile hotspot, please visit Media Kit.

Un-Congested 4G Network

T-Mobile is moving at breakneck speed to expand the capabilities of its network.

Today, T-Mobile launched its state-of-the-art 4G LTE network in seven major metropolitan areas, including Baltimore; Houston; Kansas City; Las Vegas; Phoenix; San Jose, Calif.; and Washington, D.C.  The advanced 4G LTE network is expected to reach 100 million Americans by midyear and 200 million by the end of 2013.

T-Mobile is deploying the latest LTE technology, paving the way to LTE Advanced. T-Mobile's 4G LTE deployment will complement its existing nationwide 4G network — which third-party tests show rivals or beats existing LTE networks — creating what T-Mobile expects to be the fastest 4G combination in the United States. T-Mobile 4G LTE devices will automatically and seamlessly transition to T-Mobile's nationwide 4G where LTE has not yet launched.

T-Mobile Launches Un-carrier with Wild West Commercial

To underscore its Un-carrier attitude, T-Mobile today unveiled a new tagline, "T-Mobile un-leash." In tandem, the company will roll out a new nationwide advertising campaign, beginning with a television commercial tomorrow that plays off the Western film genre. The new commercial features a group of four cowboys in black hats riding into a dusty town to the terror of its residents. As three of the cowboys tell town folk they're going to have to "do what we say," the fourth, representing T-Mobile, switches to a magenta-colored hat and rides in another direction, saying he "just doesn't want to do this anymore." The 60-second ad spot closes with one cowboy musing "I'm gonna miss the guy" while our hero simply states "Oh, I'll be around."

Motorola X Phone render image surfaces, more specs leaked

Posted: 26 Mar 2013 08:26 AM PDT

Rumors about the Motorola X Phone have been circulating for quite a while now, but we expect them to pick up steam.  We’ve heard plenty about the device and hope it can deliver on the ‘wow’ factor. Have you seen the recent rumors and the mouth-watering specs?

Possibly arriving as the Motorola NXT, our friends over at GSM Arena got their hands on a render image. What’s more, there are a number of specifications that were provided with the render. Keep in mind that this is all unconfirmed and that the image is likely to be a fanboy render.

xphone_render_gsm_arena_full

Rumored specs include a Snapdragon 800 chipset, a 4.7-inch 1280 x 768 resolution display, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, and a 4000 mAh battery. The device could be IP57 certified ( water resistant up to a meter of water for as long as 30 minutes), and offer a Gorilla Glass 3 display. Yowzers. A 4000mAh battery?

Phone Arena was also tipped by an anonymous source, and the specs they are reporting are almost similar to the one mentioned above. They indicate that the processor will be clocked at 2GHz, and the display glass will be made up of sapphire glass, three times harder than Gorilla Glass.  Also it will have rubber corners/bumpers; that will absorb the shock when dropped  and a carbon fiber back. Now the most interesting part: It is rumored that Motorola will officially launch it in November.

If these details sound too good to be true, they probably are. There has been no indication yet that sapphire glass is anywhere near production for smartphones. Take all these rumors and a render image with a grain of salt.

What are your thoughts about the Motorola X Phone? Do you think it will be the next big thing? Tell us about it in the comment box below.

First details and images surface for HTC Desire P, Desire Q

Posted: 26 Mar 2013 06:42 AM PDT

desire_p_desire_q_leak_ad_720

The first details for the HTC Desire P and HTC Desire Q have surfaced online, suggesting that China and Taiwan could soon have new models. Appearing in what may be print advertising, the two phones look to fall somewhere on the lower end of the smartphone spectrum.

HTC-Desire-P-Ad-Leak

The HTC Desire P (T326h) closely resembles the Desire SV and figures to offer a 4.3-inch WVGA display, a dual-core 1GHz processor, 8-megapixel rear camera, and front-facing camera. Presumably running Android 4.2 or later, the Desire P also features Beats Audio technology as well as microSD expansion. Based on the accompanying image, the phone will be offered in at least two color options: red with black and white with black.

HTC-Desire-Q-Ad-Leak

The HTC Desire Q (T328h) is slightly smaller experience with its 4-inch display.  Looking very much like the Desire U, this one should be available in black, white, and red options.

Reportedly, the HTC Desire P will be sold in China with an approximate U.S. retail of $365 while the HTC Desire  Q will end up in Taiwan with a $235 (U.S.) sticker.

HTC has Droid DNA successor in the works

Posted: 26 Mar 2013 06:36 AM PDT

The Droid DNA definitely made a splash in the Android world last year, and HTC knows that, to keep a name alive, you have to keep on creating. According to Taiwan Focus, HTC CMO Benjamin Ho told them that HTC plans to bring a “successor” for the DNA to the market, probably under the familiar name “butterfly”, in order “to meet consumer demands”.

Ho neglected to mention when – or where, for that matter – we might see this new device, but we can imagine how for they’ll take the design. What do you think might come in the newest member of the Butterfly line? Let us know in the comments.
