Samsung Galaxy S4 will feature eye scrolling, reports NYT

Posted: 04 Mar 2013 12:09 PM PST

full_public_s4_invite_be_readyThe upcoming Samsung Galaxy S4 will feature a new eye scrolling technology, reports someone (Samsung employee) who claims to have used the device. A New York Times article today details the rumored feature and points to recent filings which seem to substantiate the claim.

The phone will track a user's eyes to determine where to scroll, said a Samsung employee who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the news media. For example, when users read articles and their eyes reach the bottom of the page, the software will automatically scroll down to reveal the next paragraphs of text. – NYT

The Samsung Galaxy S III featured rather intuitive and clever technologies not built into the Android framework, including Smart Stay. We posited that Samsung might employ smarter features for the soon-to-be-announced phone in our What We Expect: Samsung Galaxy S4.

Ventev charging solutions for home and on the go

ventev_logo_chargers_720

We’ve spent a few weeks using some of Ventev’s new line of in-house and in-car chargers and really think you should check them out. There are a number of options at your disposal, including single USB and dual-USB options.

dashport-2100cWe first saw these new products at CES in January where Ventev was kind enough to provide us with some samples. It’s hard to talk at length about this sort of thing but, suffice it to say, these are great devices with very attractive price points.

Whether you need to charge up your phone (1A), tablet (2.1A), or a combination of the two, Ventev has a solution for you. Several of the products we checked out included a rapid charging feature which helps cut down the time you spend plugged in. You know, so you can be mobile with that mobile device.

Depending on your needs, you can also score one of these chargers with or without a cable. If this seems like there are a lot of options to choose from, it’s because there are. Of course, you can also pick up the bundle with Apple products in mind as well. Whatever the case, you’re out the door for $15-$40.

While you’re at it, be sure to check out some of Ventev’s other products and solutions. There is also plethora of color options for flat, tangle-free cords, as well as protective cases for select devices. Everything we’ve tested thus far has been solid and we’ve had no reservations in recommending them to friends and family. Speaking of which, somehow the green and pink cords have disappeared.

What we like:

  • A ton of charging options to choose from
  • Quality built
  • Priced to sell
  • Cables in your favorite colors

Room for improvement:

  • Could have more online availability

Where to buy:

Ventev accessories are available from premier cellular and consumer electronics resellers, or by ordering over the phone at 800.759.9996 . We found a number of products on Amazon.com with prices that run the gamut. Poke around and we’re certain you’ll find something worth purchasing!

Move over Angry Birds, The Croods are coming March 14th!

Posted: 04 Mar 2013 09:54 AM PST

Most of us have heard of the upcoming feature film, The Croods. This family friendly animation takes you back to the Croodaceous period, where finding your next meal was always an adventure and the whole world was your playground. Now thanks to Rovio, the creators of Angry Birds, and DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc., The Croods will also be at the fingertips of iSO and Android users as well.

Just like the movie, this free game will have players hunt, gather, and explore their way through amazing landscapes as they tame creatures, care for each other, and search for a new home. Gamers will be breaking out of the Stone Age with one simple tool: The Idea! All you have to do is help them survive the wild, and of course each other.

Jelly Dash: Incredibly entertaining with high replay value

Posted: 04 Mar 2013 09:42 AM PST

jelly_dash_720

If you’re in the market for an entertaining way to spend a few minutes of your day, I submit Jelly Dash. This free game is one of the more addictive titles I have played over the last few weeks.

Jelly Dash is everything you want in a casual game: colorful graphics, very simple mechanics, and high replay value. You can try to put this one down but you’ll be back in no time at all.

jelly_dash_screen3The premise is simple in that you are given 60 seconds to earn as many points as possible. You have a variety of shapes (red stars, yellow circles, blue squares, purple gumdrops, and green beans) that need matched up. You can do this with as few as two in a row on up to a dozen or more spread across the screen.

Drag your finger across the screen and connect together as many as possible. You can go in any direction, including diagonally. The more you get together, the more points. Snag a huge chunk (seven or more) and you can pick up multipliers and bonus effects.  Swipe a few of those together and you could clear out entire rows in multiple directions. Move fast though, it gets pretty tough to keep beating your high score.

There are more than 20 levels you can reach and various special effects items to help pick up extra points. These effects can be purchased with coins (earned in game) and range from 30 up to more than 300. I’ve yet to hit level 20 but I suspect it will cost 500 coins to use the top effect. You can opt for a 5-second head start, three extra swipes, after the countdown ends, and more. What’s more, you can cough up 6,000 coins and get a week of unlimited playing (more on that in a moment).

You can also pick up coins by liking the app on Facebook or inviting friends to play. Speaking of which, logging into Facebook creates a weekly tournament between you and your friends. You can have a friendly battle between others to see who reaches the higher levels or pulls in the best score.  Don’t have a Facebook account? Play as a guest!

Getting back to coins, you can also purchase additional coins using in-app purchases in Google Play with prices that range from $1.99 (2,000 coins) up to $99.99 (180,000) coins.

Playing is limited to five rounds (jellies) at a time but you can pick up a refresh for every new level. This is much easier to do in the first few rounds so don’t worry about running out of jellies. Indeed, you can also let the time tick down for a new jelly (7:00) or just come back to it an hour later and you’re good to go.  You can also send and receive jellies from your friends and pick up an extra play each day.

I really enjoy the fact that I can sample a bonus effect for free, simply by reaching a new plateau. This way, I can find out whether it’s worth saving up coins for bigger items. You can only choose one per round but you don’t need anymore than that anyhow. Really, I spend much of my time playing without a bonus and then buying bigger stuff every so often.

What we liked:

  • Very short learning curve
  • High replay value
  • Facebook integration has perks
  • Vibrant, colorful, and cute

Room for improvement:

  • Would appreciate push notifications if someone beats your score
  • Google+ log-in would be welcomed

Samsung introduces us to Jeremy in teaser for the Galaxy S4

Posted: 04 Mar 2013 05:38 AM PST

jeremy_samsung_gs4_720Samsung has released a teaser video for the upcoming Galaxy S4 smartphone, though we don’t get even get a fleeting glimpse at the handset. That’s to be expected, however, as the big reveal is but a few days away. It’s a teaser – meant to drum up hype. It works.

Meet Jeremy, the “secret messenger” of the Samsung Unpacked event for March 14. He gets to peek into the box though he’s not allowed to speak about what he sees. Truth be told, we’re a bit perplexed as to how this all fits together but we’ll be watching none the less.

Tell us Jeremy… What’s in the box? What’s in the booooox?
