V-Moda Crossfade M-100 review

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 03:57 PM PST

I don’t think I’ve ever considered a pair of headphones to be anything other than mere audio accessories before, but upon opening the Crossfade M-100 from V-Moda, sexy is the only word that came to mind.

AG-CrossfadeWhile I don’t proclaim to have anything other than a perfunctory level of knowledge about firearms, these headphones immediately elicited thoughts of the craftsmanship and attention to build quality that I assume goes into a well-made Smith & Wesson. Now that that’s out of my system, I won’t subject you to cheesy puns about how the sound blasts your eardrums or that you should pull the trigger and buy them — I just wanted to let you know that they’re gorgeously well-made, not the least bit gaudy, and light enough to be everyday practical. I was fortunate enough to get my hands on the matte black color option, complete with Kevlar cabling, metal accents, and military-grade (MIL-STD-810) quality testing.

The sound is incredibly lush. The dynamic range is well represented via the Crossfade’s terrifically effective noise isolating cans. Often, when reviewing headphones or audio accessories, I find that the lows are lacking while the highs sizzle, or that the mids are muddy while the bass is overpowering. These are tuned to near-perfection — clear, wide, and precise. Featuring a 50MM dual-diaphragm driver, ergo soft memory foam, and a collapsible “cliqfold” hinge — they’re comfortable, unobtrusive, and durable.

Heading to V-Moda’s site will give you more details on how to customize the interchangeable metal shield kits, something I’m content to do without. I do, however, find myself defaulting to the included SpeakEasy cable for phone-calls and immediately fell in love with the exoskeleton hard case (also included). If you’d rather share your music with others than make and receive phone calls, V-Moda has also included their SharePlay audio cable that allows you to do just that. Are these probably going to marketed heavily (if not strictly) to the audiophile crowd? Sure, but allow me to be blunt : For my money (and that’s ~$300), these are THE BEST over-ear headphones on the market.

Technical Details

  • What’s included: Crossfade M-100, Exoskeleton carry case, caribener, Kevlar reinforced SpeakEasy Microphone control cable, Kevlar reinforced SharePlay audio cable, 1/4″ pro adapter, V-CORK (2), instant six-star support code, V-MODA Sticker
  • Type: Over-Ear Circumaural
  • Frequency Response: 5 – 30,000 Hz
  • Sensitivity: 103 dB @ 1kHz 1mW
  • Microphone Sensitivity: -42dB @ 1kHz

We’ve put together a handful of titles that we think you’ll appreciate. This is the start of a new series of posts for AndroidGuys called RIYL, short for “Recommended if You Like“.

T-Mobile responds with fury To AT&T’s newspaper ads

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 01:24 PM PST

Everyone loves a good fight, and this will be no different. T-Mobile has started (or is it answered?) a campaign against AT&T that is sure not to disappoint.

Let’s start at the beginning. Back in January, T-Mobile's new CEO John Legere came out ready to fight with the competition, calling AT&T’s network “crap“, and some other not so nice things about everyone else at his companies keynote CES event. He was trying to bring a fresh outlook to the company, and in all honesty, he may have gone too far.

So AT&T responded, and did so in a big way when they took out a full-page attack ad in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and USA today. The ad claims T-Mobile drops 2x the calls as AT&T as well as supporting network speeds that are only half as fast as AT&T.

ATT ad

Well, those ad’s definitely got T-Mobile’s panties in a bunch. So here we are today, with T-Mobile jabbing back with their own attack ads towards AT&T, and I am loving T-Mobile’s new no-holds-barred approach.

So, when are these going to run? These are all proof prints that have been sent to the important guys at T-Mobile for approval. According to TmoNews, we may even see these in the newspapers as early as today.

Honestly, all I can do is laugh at all of this bickering. Welcome ladies and gentlemen to the new T-Mobile, and what is sure to be an advertising war of epic proportions.

As we watch this battle unfold, what are your thoughts on the matter? Tell us how you feel in the comments below!

LG Lucid 2 leaked with Verizon branding

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 12:44 PM PST

The LG Optimus F series, introduced at Mobile World Congress alongside the LG Optimus L series, is soon set to come to the US through Verizon Wireless. Reportedly, Big Red will launch it as the Verizon Lucid 2, a successor to the LG Lucid launched in 2012. Unwired View, who leaked the press shots, shows us that it’s  pretty much like the predecessor.

LG-Lucid-2Lucid 2 will feature a 4.3-inch qHD display, 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon Krait CPU, and five-megapixel rear camera capable to shoot video in 1080p. LG launched it as an affordable device, so we can expect that Verizon will debut the phone with a cheap price tag as well. Allegedly, Verizon will launch it somewhere within the next month.

First Look: Opera 14 Beta [video]

Posted: 06 Mar 2013 07:35 AM PST

Opera Browser has be re-released in a beta form for the 14th version of the application. This update brings a major UI overhaul and many new features. Gone are the days of Windows Phone 5 Opera, Opera 14 is actually a really nice web browser and easily competes with Chrome.

Opera 14 adds a discovery tab to the speed dial, this works as an rss reader for some of the headlining stories. Opera 14 strives to improve your data using, taking parts from Opera mini, Opera 14 even shows you how much data you have saved over using a traditional browser. Whether or not Opera 14 earns its spot as your default browser is fully up to you. Personally, Chrome still takes the crown for its Google integration, but Opera is a great second choice.

Korea Times: Samsung readying 5.9-inch device for second half 2013

Samsung is only a few days from unveiling its flagship Android smartphone, the Galaxy S4; however, there’s something bigger coming down the road. According to Korea Times, Samsung will release a 5.9-inch device in the second half of the year. Presumably this will be a successor to the Galaxy Note II, though it’s unclear at this point.

”Samsung is working on introducing a new phablet using a 5.9-inch organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screen,'' an official told The Korea Times on condition of anonymity.

The second half of 2013 matches up with the one year anniversary of the Galaxy Note II so we’re inclined to believe it’s a third-generation take. On the other hand, we’ve also heard that Samsung will go even bigger for the Note III, with a 6.3-inch screen.

The rumors of the Samsung Galaxy S4 having an eye scrolling feature have taken another step closer to confirmation. Screen grabs posted by SamMobile show the option in the phone’s settings page, where it appears users can toggle specific apps.

Like the idea of Smart Scroll for GMail but don’t think you want it for Chrome or web browsing? No problem! Want to make it scroll a bit slower? Presto!

The handset looks to also feature an option called Smart Pause which pauses videos if the phone detects your head moving away from the phone. Nifty, no?

Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy S4 at a press event on March 14 where we will surely learn all the great details. AndroidGuys will be in attendance and will be anxious to help spread the good word!
