Hidden features and sensors in the Samsung Galaxy S4

Posted: 10 Apr 2013 10:23 AM PDT

It has been almost a month since the unveiling of the Galaxy S4, and Samsung wants to make sure they still have our attention. Earlier today, they published a presentation on their official blog covering some of the technologies behind the Galaxy S4's features, and they are really quite impressive.

While previous announcements have been focused mainly on hardware, today’s post focuses on nine sensors, as well as recognition technologies, that understand user behavior.

Sensors and recognition technology

A number of sensors are featured in the GALAXY S4. These sensors are claimed to be smart enough to detect a user's face, voice, motion, and much more. They include:

  • Temperature / Humidity Sensor – checks temperature and humidity levels
  • Accelerometer – detects the phone movement and is used as a Walking Mate
  • Barometer– identifies the atmospheric pressure at the user's location
  • RGB Light Sensor (Samsung Adapt Display) – Measures the red, green, blue, and white intensity of the light source.
  • Gesture Sensor– recognizes the user's hand movements using infrared rays
  • Proximity Sensor – recognizes whether the mobile phone is located near the user by using infrared rays
  • Face Recognition- used for Smart Pause, which pauses a video when the user looks away and resumes when the user returns, and Samsung Smart Scroll, which allows the user to scroll up and down without touching the screen.
  • Finger Hovering- measures electric currents that change when the user's hand is in close proximity to the touch screen. (First debuted with GALAXY Note 2, this is the first time the technology can be used without an S Pen.)
  • Geomagnetic Sensor (Digital Compass MAP) – detects magnetic field intensity
  • Gyro Sensor (Smart Rotation) – detects the mobile phone rotation

Some of these features are not new, however they have been updated to make things more convenient and hassle-free for the user. According to Samsung, they want to “go beyond simple functions like making phone calls and running applications, so users can focus on themselves and loved ones.

If all of these extra features have you nervous about the battery life, Samsung says not to worry. They say their innovative ideas have also allowed them to optimize the phone’s battery consumption as well:

If all this extra power has you concerned about battery life, fear not. The GALAXY S4 has a Micro Controller Unit (MCU) that activates the Application Processor (AP) only when needed and makes it possible to control the sensors without activating AP. As a result, the power consumption of GALAXY S4 is optimized, letting you enjoy these features longer.

What do you think of these extra features? Over the top or a perfect match for today’s user? Let us know in the comments below!

More news for Google Babel: Google Voice support, synced notifications, and more

Posted: 10 Apr 2013 08:16 AM PDT

Last week, we showed you some leaks pointing towards confirmation of Google’s unified messaging service “Babel”. Now, according to a Google memo, there’s going to be some great features included in it, such as:

  1. Brand new UI. We've designed a new UI that's applied across all clients and promotes conversations.
  2. Stay in sync.  With just one conversation list and experience across mobile and desktop, everything is always in sync. Install the Chrome app, the Android app, and iOS app.
  3. Desktop app.  Stop laying whack a mole across blinking browser tabs. With the new Chrome app your conversations continue outside of the browser.
  4. Keep a group conversation going to coordinate with your team, and start a Hangout with a single tap whenever you need to talk face-to-face.
  5. Be notified…just once.  Get notifications on your two phones, tablet, laptop, and desktop. Open it on one and watch the others disappear. If you're actively using your computer or phone we'll even intelligently notify you on just one of those endpoints. Magic!
  6. Message more than just text.  Add a photo to the conversation and/or send some of the 800+ emoji to your coworkers. Kittens and poop are particularly helpful in explaining complex issues.
  7. Get nostalgic.  Scroll back in time and relive any (on-the-record) conversation, on any device.
  8. More ways to talk.  For the first time we are building a first class iOS experience. Try out our very early preview on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

There’s also talk that there will be Google Voice support “eventually”, but the initial service will only include Messenger, Hangouts, and Talk. There’s still, however, no talk of a solid release date.

Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments.
