Samsung Galaxy S4 Developer Edition headed to Verizon, AT&T

Posted: 23 May 2013 01:46 PM PDT

samsung_galaxy_s4_developer_edition

Verizon and AT&T are among the first two carriers lined up to offer the Samsung Galaxy S4 Developer Edition. Announced at Google I/O 2013, the handset is noteworthy as it features the hardware of the standard Samsung Galaxy S4 but with the software of a Nexus device.

Thus far these two are the only models that appear to be showing up on Samsung’s site with Verizon getting the SCH-I545 while AT&T will offer the SGH-I337. And, as we learned at the initial unveiling, the device will be offered through Google Play where it will work with either AT&T or T-Mobile.

Are you considering the Samsung Galaxy S4 Developer Edition for yourself? Why or why not? Would you like to see it offered on another carrier? In a related note, be sure to check out this post by Anthony who tells us what the S4 Developer Edition could mean to you and I.

What a ‘Pure Google’ Samsung Galaxy S4 could mean for you

Posted: 23 May 2013 08:52 AM PDT

With all the buzz around the next Nexus devices, leaked specs and gorgeous renders have had me (and every fan of AOSP) drooling for the next member of the Pure Google family. Who would think I/O would change that for me?

Deep down, I’m a “Samsung” man. I’ve owned the whole Galaxy S line, the Behold II before that, even my first flip phone was a Samsung. I have a Samsung Chromebook and a Samsung TV.

galaxy_s4_google_io

The idea of abandoning Samsung is a sad thought that occurs when I consider “jumping ship” for the supposed LG Nexus 5. But, as if to answer my silent prayers, Google and Samsung have announced the “Google S4″ or “Nexus S4″ or just AOSP Galaxy S4. We still don’t know what it’s going to be called officially, but I like “Google S4″.

Everyone has heard almost everything there is to say about the Google S4, but here are the things that really excite me.

First:
If their adoption of the unadulterated Nexus 4 was any indication, I believe T-Mobile may decide to offer the device. Anyone who wants one of these handsets but doesn’t have the near $700 may be able to put the device on a payment plan with T-the carrier. And, since it’s unlocked, after it’s paid off, you can take it to your favorite carrier. Have a contract?

tmobile_logo_feature

Have a child who’s ready for a phone? Get the Google S4 for you and throw the SIM into a dumb-phone for them. You can still make payments and justify the extra line.

Second:
From the looks of it, the Google edition will have the Snapdragon 600 processor just like the rest of the US Galaxy S4 variants. Ready for the really awesome part? If you’re familiar with Samsung, they have a habit of “leaking” a beautiful proprietary program for Windows called “ODIN Multi-downloader.” The very same program they would use on your device were you to send it in for service of a software/firmware related issue. This program allows you to flash stock (or unofficial) firmware to the device.

What this means to anyone with a US Galaxy S4, your development community will have instantaneous access to a rock solid AOSP build of the latest API available and with little to no tweaking depending upon your carrier, will make that available to you without even the hassle of rooting your device (if you’re not into that)

It would stand to reason, then, that even if T-Mobile doesn’t pick up the Google S4, presuming the hardware proves to be the same as the T-Mobile model, all you’d need to do is flash the Google S4 factory image over the your device. If that works flawlessly without having to modify the operating system image at all, then theoretically you should even receive the OTAs from Google with the latest version of Android the same day as the Google S4.

Who’s excited about what the Google S4 is going to bring to the development community? Anyone planning on buying one? Anyone else confused about Samsung’s cooperation with Google when they’re supposedly bringing their own OS to the table? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

PSA: Be careful when setting alarms and reminders in Google Now

Posted: 23 May 2013 08:47 AM PDT

Google Now is a wonderful tool for Android users. It’s sleek, intuitive, and gets things done for you much faster than you could do them manually. However, users should be aware of a small bug in Now.

When using the “remind me”, “set timer”, or “set alarm” function, Google Now has been having a small bug – not so small, however, if you’re really depending on those alarms and reminders. It seems that, when the user gives Google Now a time span in which to set an alarm or reminder, the app is occasionally adding a zero into the calculation for time. For example: saying “remind me xyz in 3 minutes” could result in an alarm in 30 minutes, or saying “set an alarm in 15 minutes” could give you an alarm in 105 minutes. It’s shown in the video below:

It should be noted that most users are saying the “remind me” bug has been resolved in the latest Google Now. However, this writer was able to reproduce the bug exactly on the latest version of Now by using the “set an alarm in” and “set timer in” commands: “set an alarm in 15 minutes’ actually set an alarm for 105 minutes later. I did verify I was running the most recent version of the Google app from the Play Store. The screenshot from that exact command is below:

Screenshot_2013-05-23-10-40-55

For now, we suggest both keeping an eye on your alarms when they’re being set, and making sure you always have the most recent version of Google from the Play Store.

Be sure to let us know below if you’re experiencing the same issues, or if yours seems to be resolved.

‘Aurora red’ Galaxy S4 coming exclusively to AT&T

Posted: 23 May 2013 08:24 AM PDT

Multiple colors on big-time phones are always a good option to have, so people can get a more custom device suited to their likes. AT&T has now announced that they will be carrying the Galaxy S4 in a new color, “aurora red”, in the US. The new device will be carried only at AT&T, and will go up for pre-order from tomorrow, May 24. Physical locations should have it by June 14. The 16GB version will be the one coming in the new color option.

Rumored flexible Samsung tablet specs and images leaked

Posted: 23 May 2013 08:19 AM PDT

At CES this year, Samsung showed off working prototypes of its flexible displays. Since then, other than a concept video, there hasn’t been much news on this alleged tablet with a bendable AMOLED display. Until now.

A flexible 10.1 inch tablet render has been leaked along with a series of specifications. This bendy “Gumby-like” panel is supposed to have full HD 1920×1080, a 1.6 GHz Exynos 5 Octa processor, 2 GB of RAM, 16/32 GB of storage, and a microSD card slot as well. A 3MP front camera and a 8000 mAh battery are also rumored to be included.

samsung 10.1 inch flexible tablet

Now we must take these specs and images with a grain of salt, as nothing has been confirmed as of yet. As the report that was attached with the images pointed out, these renderings closely match a series of patents filed by Samsung related to flexible screen tablets earlier this year, however this still doesn’t mean they are real.  (On a personal note, while the flexible screen may look neat and is quite clever, I’m having an issue seeing a point to bending the screen in such a way.)

What do you think, would you have a use for such a bendable tablet concept? Let us know in the comments below!

U.S. feedback kills the U.K launch of HTC First

Posted: 23 May 2013 07:12 AM PDT

htc_first_720

We can’t say this is much of a surprise; the HTC First will not be arriving in the U.K. anytime soon. After receiving less than stellar feedback for the U.S. launch of the HTC First, the social network giant has scrapped plans to launch the device across the pond.  OK, not officially scrapped, but indefinitely postponed.

“Following customer feedback, Facebook has decided to focus on adding new customization features to Facebook Home over the coming months. While they are working to make a better Facebook Home experience, they have recommended holding off launching the HTC First in the UK, and so we will shortly be contacting those who registered their interest with us to let them know of this decision. Rest assured, we remain committed to bringing our customers the latest mobile experiences, and we will continue to build on our strong relationship with Facebook so as to offer customers new opportunities in the future.” – Statement from EE

When Facebook announced the Facebook Home experience we were told that there would be monthly updates. Seeing as the most recent update (as of today) is May 21, we’re guessing that minor updates will likely be what’s on the radar for now.

Reportedly, those who pre-ordered the Facebook First in the UK will be refunded their money and have orders cancelled.

HTC announces Desire 600 dual sim for June launch

Posted: 23 May 2013 06:58 AM PDT

htc_720wThis morning HTC unveiled the new HTC Desire 600 dual sim, a mid-range handset that includes their latest Sense 5 interface. Even though HTC is aiming to give consumers a more affordable option, they still included a few high-end specifications to keep users intrigued.

The Desire 600 is said to include a quad-core processor and an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, and will run Android Jelly Bean (it's unclear which version) under the hood. Running the "dual active" system, the HTC Desire 600 dual sim also allows users to have two SIM cards active all the times, giving it the ability to receive a call on one line, even if the other is in use. The device will also boast HTC's impressive front-facing BoomSound speakers and brings HTC's acclaimed BlinkFeed to the table as well. The Desire 600 will also have a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdraon 200 processor, a 4.5-inch Super LCD2 display (assumed to be 960×540 pixel resolution), and a 1.6-megapixel front-facing camera.

According to HTC, the Desire 600 will launch at most major carriers in early June, however according to Cult of Android, it will begin launch in Russia, Ukraine, and the Middle East before hitting the U.S.

WSJ: 5 million HTC One sales so far

Posted: 23 May 2013 05:32 AM PDT

htc_logo_720

How about a little bit of positive news for HTC today? According to the Wall Street Journal, HTC has already sold 5 million units of the HTC One flagship smartphone. While this is about half of what Samsung has done with the Galaxy S4, it’s a commendable figure nonetheless.

“Orders are pretty good so far and are still more than what we can supply…This is partly due to the shortage of components. When the issue is resolved next month, we will have a better idea if it’s doing really well or not.” – unnamed HTC source

HTC has been plagued with issues as of late; recent reports have the company shedding multiple high level executives. Assuming the word of mouth and favorable reviews are fueling the HTC One we might assume a bit of momentum could build and lead to a slight rebound.
