Weekend Wallpapers: 20 more Geometric backgrounds for your Android

Posted: 24 May 2013 11:27 AM PDT

Looking to change up your Android home screen?  It doesn’t get much easier than swapping out the wallpaper; it’s one of the quickest ways to breath new life into the mobile experience. We recently began curating a collection of wallpapers for you, dear reader, and are only too happy to share the goods!

We’ll be adding to the collection on a regular basis and will occasionally highlight a theme or specific artist’s work we really appreciate.

ABOUT THIS THEME:

This collection of wallpapers is based around the common theme of geometric shapes. This is the second edition in an ongoing series. Be sure to check out the first 25 geometry-based wallpapers!

We really appreciate the way in which our icons and widgets look on backgrounds such as these. Maybe it’s because they remind us of the holo-themed stuff of Android 4.0 and later.  Maybe it’s the minimalist in us.  Perhaps, it’s the fact that we cannot get enough color. Whatever, we dig ‘em and think you will, too.

Phiaton PS 210 BTNC review

Posted: 24 May 2013 11:02 AM PDT

What happens when you combine the noise-cancelling capabilities of the Phiaton PS 20 NC earphones with the Bluetooth capabilities of the Phiaton PS 20 BT? You get the delicious chocolate peanut butter cup that is Phiaton PS 210 BTNC.

phiaton_ps_210_btnc1As someone who has “cut the cord” that comes with headphones and earphones, it seems bothersome to go back to something that tethers me to a device. Be it riding a bicycle, walking, running, or mowing the grass, I want to be freed up and not worrying about a cord.

I’ve tested a number of headphones over the years, some with a cord and some without. One particular brand that I’ve enjoyed using is Phiaton, a company who happens to offer a selection in both. I was only too excited to try out this particular model as it promised the best of both worlds: noise cancellation and Bluetooth connectivity. Suffice it to say, they deliver.

Details for the Phiaton PS 210 BTNC include Bluetooth 3.0 connection,  the familiar half in-ear earbud, musical controls, and an “Echo-Off” feature to remove background noises from calls.

phiaton_ps_210_btnc2The battery life on these headphones is rather impressive with around 10-15 hours of phone calls and/or music playback. Results vary, of course, based on levels and length of use but I found that I would charge my phone twice as often as I needed to plug in the headphones. Standby time is rated at 250 hours but I never set them down long enough to test that.

As someone who likes to ride a bike I will often encounter a whistle or wind effect in headphones when listening on the go. Maybe it’s the half in-ear design, maybe it’s the way the silicon fits (four options) and feels. Whatever it is, I didn’t detect any outside “interference” in my music. Toggle on the noise-cancellation and it’s even better. Indeed, you do not have to always have this feature on.

Additional features for the Phiaton PS 210 BTNC include:

  • Second generation Everplay-X technology –made exclusively for the PS 210 BTNC earphones– allows you to continue listening to music even if the battery runs out
  • "MaxBass Reflex" technology with a dual-chamber structure that virtually eliminates unwanted vibration and echo.
  • 2.5mm to 3.5mm Audio Cable to use on an airline or when you don’t need to be wireless.

While I primarily use these for listening music and podcasts, I cannot avoid the occasional phone call. That said, these sound great in stereo and callers on the other end reported that they could hear me just as clearly as when using my handset. Noise cancelling worked great in phone calls for both myself and callers and I was able to move at moderate speeds on the bike without too much wind blowing in.

Some readers might balk at spending more than $100 for some headphones, especially if they spend less than that on a phone. Keep in mind, however, that these will likely outlast that handset and will pair to any other Bluetooth phone or tablet. In other words, these will be around for a while.  Sure, you can go with other Bluetooth options or a different set of noise-cancelling earphones, but if you’re looking for an all-in-one solution, these come highly recommended.

Where to Buy: Amazon (approximately $129)

Android 4.3 surfaces yet again with Nexus 4 leak

Posted: 24 May 2013 10:07 AM PDT

An LG Nexus 4 running Android 4.3 has been spotted a mobile conference taking place in Thailand this week. As you can see from the images here the Nexus smartphone looks to be running a brand new JWR45B build which is still considered Jelly Bean. Also of particular note is that the camera interface appears to be getting a punch-up.

Still no word on when the Android 4.3 experience will go live; June 10 is the latest date getting tossed around.

Leaked Huawei Ascend P6 pics have us asking: Is it the world’s thinnest smartphone?

Posted: 24 May 2013 07:18 AM PDT

Back in January, Huawei attempted to nab the "world's thinnest smartphone" crown with the Ascend P2 but failed miserably. Now they are at it again with the Huawei Ascend P6.

huawei ascend p6 whiteThis little Android device is trying once again to reclaim Huawei's crown for the thinnest smartphone on the market. Thanks to the group at @evleaks, we have a little teaser pic at what it could look like. We don’t know much else about the device other than rumors saying it could measure in at 6.2mm thick and have a 4.7-inch 720p display. Supposedly the device is to be officially announced at a June 18th event in London, so until then have a look and let us know what you think!

Potential bidding war looms with Google reportedly eyeing Waze

Posted: 24 May 2013 06:04 AM PDT

This could get pretty interesting pretty quick. Google is reportedly considering throwing in a counter-offer to Waze and may be ready to engage Facebook in a bidding war.

Waze is fielding expressions of interest from multiple parties and is seeking more than $1 billion, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified because the talks are private.

First surfacing a few weeks ago, rumors had it that Facebook was in advance stages of discussion with the social-based mapping and navigation service. Details, at the time, suggested that the deal was hovering around the $1 billion mark; any bidders interested better have a big wallet.

I’m curious as to whether Google would fold in any of Waze’s features into the Maps experience or simply just  remove one of its biggest threats.

HTC One Google Edition release ‘imminent’, source claims

Posted: 24 May 2013 05:21 AM PDT

HTC could soon follow in the footsteps of Samsung and release a “Google Edition” of its big 2013 smartphone, according to sources close to Geek.

Reportedly, the phone will be a stock Android experience that doesn’t feature any of the customization that comes with HTC Sense UI.

As a reminder, Geek was the site which leaked the last minute word of a Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Edition on the eve of Google I/O 2013.

Sources claim this vanilla HTC One will be announced within the next two weeks, with potential release slated for sometime this summer. This falls in line with claims from HTC that production for the One will be doubling soon, as well as plan to have the HTC One updates to Android 4.2.2. in the same time frame.
