Huawei launching MediaPad 7 Vogue tablet this month with ability to make phone calls/send SMS

Posted: 24 Jun 2013 01:26 PM PDT

Huawei_MediaPad_7_Vogue

First we started seeing phablets, and now we’re seeing full-on tablets with phone-calling and SMS capabilities hit the market. Huawei plans to keep the trend moving with their new MediaPad 7 Vogue. This device has a 7-inch 1024 x 600 IPS display, 1.2GHz quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, 3MP rear camera, .3MP front-facing camera, 8GB internal storage, a microSD slot for expandable memory, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean layered with Huawei’s Emotion UI.

Obviously the features that put this tablet in the spotlight are its abilities to make phone calls and send texts— it also comes with a speaker at the top of the device so you can just hold it up to your ear rather than use a pair of headphones… if you want to look absolutely silly, of course. We’re not sure that there are so many people willing to haul around this thing for the purpose of making phone calls, but there certainly is a market for it. To start, the MediaPad 7 Vogue will launch in China this month, with other markets to follow shortly after.

What do you guys think? Would you buy one of these? Would you use the phone speaker at the top of the device or plug in some headphones?

AT&T sale: half off on smartphones, free activation w/ new two-year contract

Posted: 24 Jun 2013 12:59 PM PDT

AT&T

If your contract with AT&T is up or you’re looking to switch carriers, right now may be the perfect time to do so. The company is currently charging 50% off the subsidized fee of any smartphone from the price of $0.99 to $199. Not only is the price reduced, but AT&T is waiving the obnoxious activation fee as well.

However, to take advantage of this new deal, you have to be starting a new two-year contract, and you can’t opt to get a higher internal-storage version of a smartphone because it will most likely push you past the price boundary of $199.

So if you fit these two requirements and want a new phone, hop on over to AT&T’s site. Happy shopping!

Cachers can also view photos, connect to chirp® enabled caches, and filter caches by size, terrain, difficulty and type.

The new Garmin Monterra will be available third quarter 2013 at a recommended retail price of £599.99 with preloaded Rec Map Europe with Navteq® roads. With Monterra, users are able to work mobile in the field, using all the Android apps they are used to using, but with the assurance of a rugged device that is waterproof, has longer battery life, an easy to read display and a variety of mounting options. jay_z_galaxyLast week, Samsung announced that they would be partnering with Jay-Z to give away 1 million copies of his new album. Today we see that plan in fruition. Samsung Galaxy S 3, S 4, and Note II users can apply to get “Magna Carta Holy Grail” three days before it is released to the general public.  Download Samsung’s new app, “JAY Z Magna Carta,” and the new album will arrive on your phone on July 4th, while the rest of the world can give it a listen July 7th. Users will also get behind-the-scene footage, lyrics, and track sharing options through the app.

I assume that come July 4, users will only be able to listen to the album streaming through the app, and downloading tracks will not be an option in order to prevent piracy. You can download the app and get your Jay Z fix  right now through he link after the break.

LG-G2

It’s looking more and more like LG can’t wait to unveil its Optimus G successor to the general public and unveil the upcoming device sooner than we think. According to various reports, despite the fact LG already sent out press invites for an August 7th event, LG plans on introducing the successor— also known as the G2 smartphone— sometime in July for Korean markets, followed by a more gradual worldwide launch. In addition, other reports indicate the G2 smartphone will utilize that suddenly popular Snapdragon 800 chip that all the other cool manufacturers are starting to use and as well as of course, LTE Advanced support.

Naturally we’re all inclined to hope that LG will include some serious hardware packed inside since ummm y’know— it’ll probably have a hand in developing a special variation of the upcoming toy for Google and all.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Portfolio Offers Consumers New Variety and Personalized Experiences for Staying Connected

As consumer tablet usage swells, new consumer research shows demand for more choice and Samsung's new 7", 8", and 10.1" tablets deliver

RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Samsung Electronics America, Inc. today debuted three new tablets as part of the Galaxy Tab 3 family, allowing consumers to choose which tablet suits them best. The 7 inch, 8 inch and 10.1 inch Galaxy tablets offer a range of screen sizes and a suite of experiences built for a broader set of individual and family preferences, making this lineup of tablets ideal for both home and on-the-go uses. The Wi-Fi-enabled Galaxy Tab 3 portfolio will be available in three form factors: Galaxy Tab 3 7.0, Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 and Galaxy Tab 3 10.1., and will be available in the U.S. beginning July 7, with pre-orders starting tomorrow.

"Samsung's industry-leading smartphones, Note devices and tablets address consumers' diverse demands and personal preferences"

"Samsung's industry-leading smartphones, Note devices and tablets address consumers' diverse demands and personal preferences," said Nanda Ramachandran, vice president of emerging business at Samsung Telecommunications America. "The Galaxy Tab 3 portfolio offers consumers more options for tablets that serve as their ultimate smartphone companion, the center of home and on-the-go use, and mobile devices packed with content and services."

New consumer data* from Forrester Research validates that tablets are quickly becoming a central mobile device for consumers. Specifically, 49 percent of U.S. consumers who own both a mobile phone and tablet prefer the tablet as their primary device to go online. Data from the same Forrester survey further indicates that across 25 types of tablet applications there is no single dominant use of tablets by users. The typical user is more well-defined by their lack of uniformity as evidenced by the fact that they engage in a widely varied mix of five to six different application types in a given month. Only games top the 50 percent threshold for all tablet users – so it is obvious that each consumer is looking for a customized device that fits their personal needs on functionality in addition to size, price, power and connectivity. Whether reading an e-book, engaging on social networks, or allowing the kids to play games, the Galaxy Tab 3 portfolio has something for everyone.

"In addition to providing consumers greater variety in terms of size, form factor, price points and experiences, the Galaxy Tab 3 portfolio will be widely available for purchase from a multitude of retail channels further reinforcing Samsung's commitment to delivering personal choice to all," said Travis Merrill, vice president of tablet marketing at Samsung Electronics America.

Familiar Galaxy Experience

The Galaxy Tab 3 portfolio blends the familiar Galaxy family feel in sleek and slim designs with compelling content and services that consumers will want to use in their everyday lives. Created to be the perfect companion to the Galaxy line of smartphones, the Galaxy Tab 3 devices give consumers a seamless transition of content and services between their various Galaxy products. Similar to the Galaxy Note 8.0 and Galaxy smartphones, physical home and capacitive buttons are included.

Home Entertainment Hub

The Galaxy Tab 3 has various form factors and light-weight builds, which quickly and easily transition into the center of the home. Research shows that 85% of tablet users watch TV while using their tablet, with 41% of them doing this daily.** For this consumer, each Galaxy Tab 3 portfolio device's built-in IR blaster turns the tablets into a universal remote and can activate Samsung's innovative WatchONTM service. This service recommends TV shows and on-demand content, enabling the tablets to function as the hub of the living room and king of second screen consumption.

Packed with Content

This newest portfolio also makes discovering, accessing and sharing new content, including over 750,000 apps, from the Google Play and Samsung Apps stores even simpler. The Galaxy Tab 3 makes it convenient to stay connected on-the-go, balancing any number of tasks, such as emailing, managing your schedule, social networking, online shopping, reading, playing games and streaming content.

In addition, each of the devices in the Galaxy Tab 3 portfolio will come with a bevy of content value through pre-loaded content and Galaxy Perks available atwww.samsung.com/us/galaxyperks. Specifically, hundreds of dollars' worth of content, including a $10 voucher for the purchase of applications, books, movies and music in Google Play; one year of free Boingo hotspot service; three months free Hulu Plus service; two years free DropBox Service with 50GB storage space; and more.

The Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 is aimed at consumers who are in the market to purchase a portable tablet with all the features and reliability they need to stay connected throughout their daily activities. Built for portability, the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 allows users to consume and manage content on-the-go. It is compact enough to easily slide into handbags or a jacket pocket so that consumers on-the-go will appreciate its compact size and lightweight design.

The premium Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 product is thin, lightweight, feature-packed and powerful, making it the ideal portable tablet for on-the-go performance. With Samsung's built-in Reading Mode, the Tab 3 8.0 is the perfect e-reader-sized tablet.

New for the Galaxy Tab family of devices is Samsung's Multi-Window functionality. Following the popularity of the feature on Note devices, Multi-Window comes to the Galaxy Tab 3 8.0. Offering true PC-like multi-tasking, consumers can use two apps side-by-side, with support up to 20 applications, including Polaris Office, Google Chrome and Facebook.

The Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 offers a larger HD screen optimized for entertainment – watching movies and playing games. With Samsung's WatchON TV recommendation service, built-in IR blaster and 10.1-inch screen, the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 is the new hub of the living room. As a second screen companion and perfect tablet for viewing content and watching movies, the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 transforms the ultimate content-consumption device.

The latest Galaxy Tab family is also SAFE™ (Samsung for Enterprise), allowing users to work and play with confidence that their photos, emails and contacts are protected. The portfolio also includes expandable memory up to 64GB through a microSD card.

This newest family comes in two color options – White and a unique Gold Brown. The Galaxy Tab 3 7.0, 8.0 and 10.1 will be available for purchase from major retailers nationwide on July 7 with pre-sales beginning June 25 at Best Buy/Best Buy Mobile, Amazon, Wal-Mart, h.h. Gregg, Office Depot, Toys 'R' Us, P.C. Richard & Son, Fry's, Newegg, Sears and Samsung.com. The Galaxy Tab 3 portfolio will be priced at $199, $299 and $399, respectively.

Featured Android Game Review: Tiny Token Empires [Casual]

Posted: 24 Jun 2013 07:58 AM PDT

Tiny_Token_Empires_Splash_Banner

Tiny Token Empires has finally made its way to Android thanks to HeroCraft. It’s a real-time strategy (RTS) game, but more for the casual fan. Hardcore RTS fans are probably not going to find this one all that appealing, but for those of you that are intrigued with strategy and puzzle-type games will enjoy this one. If you like a little humor thrown in then it will make it that much more enjoyable for you.

Tiny Token Empires is all about maneuvering your troops into territories, fighting for takeover, and building additional territories and armies. Fighting for land is where the puzzle-aspect comes in as it becomes a match three game. Each troop type corresponds to different colored tokens and by matching three of the required tokens, you will gain more power. You will need to play this match three game enough times so that you have enough power to take the enemy out. If you are able to match four, you get an additional turn. Yes, it’s a Bejeweled clone thrown into a strategy game.

After you have taken over an area, you will be able to use the income from that land to build settlements and hire more soldiers. Doing this repeatedly will hopefully make you the dictator of the world.

Based on what I have told you so far, the game would seem simple, but it can be complicated at times. There is a lengthy tutorial when you first play the game that will go over everything and it can seem daunting with so many controls and features. Ultimately, Tiny Tokens is about moving your troops into areas that are occupied and playing the Bejeweled-clone repeatedly until you win.

Tiny Tokens is priced at $2.99, which I think is a little high for a game like this. For those that are already familiar with playing the game on a PC or iOS in the past, it might not be too high, but it’s going to be tough to attract new players at that price. If you’re looking for a simple strategy game, this one might be for you. You can view HeroCraft’s trailer below and hit one of the download links to get started.

Features

  • A world of goofy gods and cute monsters
  • Five game modes
  • Five nations, five heroes, 25 generals and fifty troop types
  • Three difficulty levels to test the biggest brain
  • Five distinctive campaigns
  • Over 15 hours of gaming!

Huawei plans to be third-best smartphone manufacturer in the world, throws jabs at Apple and Samsung in the process

Posted: 24 Jun 2013 07:29 AM PDT

huawei-ascend-p6-color-choices

Considering Huawei is on a little bit of a tear with its latest newest smartphone release, it should come as no surprise that it will be much more aggressive with its positioning as one of the world’s top brands, while creating a little bit of controversy in the process. While showcasing its new Ascend P6 smartphone to the general public last week, CEO Richard Yu made it clear that the company as a whole intends to make devices better than the world’s top brands, while making them cheaper and thus, more attractive for consumers in the process. Oh and Yu also highlights that Sammy’s Galaxy S 4 is not only painfully average, but Huawei is on the path to making its devices much more user-friendly for its consumers:

We want to provide the best, most beautiful, slimmest smartphone – this one [Galaxy S4] is much thicker. We're not made of plastic. In the high tier, if you have huge money to spend on marketing and branding, like Samsung, then everyone will buy that. We don't have so much money to do marketing and branding so we have to make our products better.

“The best smartphone in the past was from Nokia, then from Apple, then from Samsung. And who is number one? The industry is so dynamic – no matter how successful you are, if you're currently number one, doesn't mean tomorrow you'll be number one. Samsung, they have such huge money – if you invest in marketing and branding then people will always buy no matter how good the products are. The Samsung Galaxy S4 is just a so-so smartphone…

In its latest update, Apple makes the phone extremely simple to use. But if we are just learning from them we can't catch up, because they are now slipping. We want to go higher than them…

We have a good relationship with Google. We want Android to be more user friendly, so we have made a lot of enhancements. Google is good for an engineer but it's not good for the consumer. It's a little bit too complicated.”
So there you have it— Huawei is making no stops on its quest for the bronze medal in the smartphone world. Heck at this rate, it might even foster ambitions to be the very best in the world instead.

Samsung could utilize Carbon Fiber in future devices

Posted: 24 Jun 2013 06:52 AM PDT

Carbon_Fiber

The biggest complaint with Samsung has been their overuse of plastic in their smartphones and tablets. We have heard that Samsung could start implementing metal in their 2014 models, but don’t rule out Carbon Fiber. Turns out Samsung formed a strategic partnership with the SGL Group, which is one of the leading manufacturers of carbon-based products and materials. Samsung Petrochemical and SGL Group will each hold a 50% stake in the joint venture, which will be called Samsung SGL Carbon Composite Materials. The primary objective is to develop new industrial and electronic applications with carbon composite materials for Samsung and the Korean market.

One of the reasons why Samsung continues to utilize plastics is the fact that it’s light and durable. Carbon Fiber offers that as well so this seems like a natural fit for Samsung. Hit the break for the full press release.

SGL Group and Samsung establish joint venture for Carbon Composite Materials

• Strategic partnership with a Marketing & Sales JV for joint market development and distribution
• Target: Introduction of new industrial and electronic applications for carbon composite materials

Wiesbaden, June 20, 2013. Today, SGL Group – The Carbon Company – and Samsung established a strategic partnership for carbon fiber composite materials with the foundation of a Marketing & Sales joint venture. The joint venture partners, Samsung Petrochemical and SGL Group, will each hold a 50% share. The primary objective of the cooperation is to develop new industrial and electronic applications with carbon composite materials for Samsung and the Korean market. The joint venture will operate under the name "Samsung SGL Carbon Composite Materials".

The cooperation is expected to provide a stable long-term supply of carbon fiber materials for Samsung and promote its use in various Samsung products and applications such as consumer electronics, medical devices and engineering applications. Carbon fiber materials from SGL Group will be preferred by the Joint Venture. In the mid-term, the joint venture will aim for business expansion over the rest of Asia.

Juergen Koehler, member of the Board of Management of SGL Group: "In this partnership with Samsung, we combine our strengths and promote the use of carbon fiber materials in fast growing markets such as digital media. Carbon fiber materials play an increasingly important role in the material substitution process towards lighter products. Our joint venture underlines our strategy to enter new markets and develop innovative applications for our high-performance materials. We are proud to partner with Samsung."

Yoosung Chung, President & CEO of Samsung Petrochemical: "Our long-term cooperation with SGL Group will ensure the exclusive supply of carbon fiber composite materials to Samsung. We selected SGL Group as partner due to the company's unique expertise along the entire value chain from carbon fibers to CFRP components. Lightweight materials have become an important factor not only in industrial applications but also the consumer end markets such as digital media. This partnership will position Samsung as a leading player in the development and application of carbon fiber-based products."

Both companies will combine their core competencies in this marketing & sales joint venture. SGL Group contributes its know-how in high performance carbon fiber-based materials. Samsung Petrochemical shares its experiences from particular application development with the Samsung's affiliates, which is expected to allow the company to successfully meet the requirements of new industrial products and solutions.

Following the signing of the joint venture contract, which took place today in Seoul, the closing of the transaction is scheduled for July, pending regulatory approvals. Operations of the joint venture are scheduled to begin immediately thereafter. The joint venture will be headquartered in Ulsan/South Korea, at a Samsung Petrochemical facility. The office of the Marketing & Sales joint venture will be located in Seoul/South Korea.

The joint venture targets applications in the markets for electronic products, wind blades, pressure vessels, automotive and household appliances in the Far East. The Asian carbon fiber market is expected to be sharply growing in Korea and China by over 20% per year. Currently the Korean market focuses on prepreg and sportive goods. In the future though, the market is to be expanded to a wider range of industries like wind energy, electronics, automotives and others.
