More details leak about Moto X, including customizations

Posted: 03 Jul 2013 02:13 PM PDT

The Moto X is quickly becoming the most hyped device of the year, and a new leak just adds more information to the rumor mill. These rumors have been floating around for a while, and we’ve confirmed many of them before, but it’s good to hear them from a few sources.

The newest info reveals the degree of customization that will be available on the Moto X. You will be able to customize the color of at least two external parts. There will be the back panel and the trim, which can be individually colored, matched or mismatched. There will also be the option of engraving the device with your own message or name. And strangely, you’ll be able to upload a personal photo and have it be used as the device’s wallpaper. This is something you can do yourself, so it’s strange that they would offer it.

The above image shows three of the colors to be available, out of the sixteen to be offered. That’s a pretty impressive set of colors. This is only for the back cover, so we’ll see how they will handle the front of the device. Black front with colored trim and back sounds fantastic to me.

The device will also come with a large array of sensors we previously mentioned. Opening the camera app will be as simple as flicking the phone, instead of having to find the icon. It’ll also have voice recognition that will be listening for commands, making the device easier to use. And of course, it’ll know when you’re driving or walking and react accordingly, like turning on the speaker phone when you’re in the car.

Other small tidbits include the device running Android 4.2.2, which has been known for a while and expected from a Google company, and shipping customized devices within days of the purchase. The devices will also be available in stores, which of course means buying it without customization.

With all these confirmations and official statements, the Moto X is quickly coming together. With a release date of “soon” from Motorola, we don’t know when we will see it, but I personally can’t wait to get my Android and Me green Moto X to play with. Are you getting more excited for this device?

Motorola won’t let Verizon DROID-ify the Moto X

Posted: 03 Jul 2013 10:25 AM PDT

Motorola and Verizon have been very good friends for the last few years. Ever since the first Motorola DROID came out, Verizon used Motorola (and occasionally Samsung and HTC) to create an entire brand image centered on the “DROID.” The brand grew as many different phones entered the fray, and Motorola was at the forefront of this effort.

In the last few years, Motorola has released four standard DROIDs, five different DROID RAZRs and two DROID Xs. We aren’t saying that it’s too many phones, but it really demonstrates how much Motorola helped build the brand that. at one time, categorized all of Android.

With the Moto X coming soon, and most likely coming to all four carriers, we were afraid that Motorola might give in and allow Verizon slap that DROID label on it. However, multiple sources suggest that Motorola will not allow it and that the device will be released under the same name across all four major carriers.

This definitely doesn’t mean that Motorola is done making DROID devices. We’ll most likely see a DROID RAZR Ultra series coming to Verizon. The DROID brand isn’t going anywhere, for better or for worse.

While it isn’t a huge deal, it’s nice to know that the device many of us will probably buy won’t boot up with a loud and obnoxious DROOOOOOOID. We just want the clean Moto X experience (aside from a bit of bloatware, which is to be expected). On the other hand, some consumers may not care so much. What does this mean to you?

Moto X registration page goes live

Posted: 03 Jul 2013 10:00 AM PDT

In conjunction with the Moto X ad that ran today in the New York Times, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal and Washington Post, Motorola has launched an email registration page on its site for those who would like to stay informed about the product. The Moto X registration page does not reveal any new details about the phone, but it does claim that, “by the end of summer, we expect there to be more than 2000 new employees in Ft. Worth, TX working to make all this possible.”

motorola-x-registration-2

The idea of owning a phone that’s “designed by you” is certainly appealing, but Motorola and Google will be facing some tough competition from Samsung and HTC for dominance in the high-end Android space. Do you think Google and Motorola are willing to back the Moto X with a marketing budget big enough to push the Samsung Galaxy S4 to the sidelines?

HTC One Max, HTC One mini confirmed by O2 Germany document

Posted: 03 Jul 2013 09:57 AM PDT

A newly leaked O2 Germany document is the first piece of evidence from a service provider confirming that the HTC One mini and HTC One Max are indeed real. The document lists a silver HTC One Max, and the HTC One mini is listed in both silver and black. The O2 document does not contain any details regarding the launch dates for the HTC One Max or HTC One mini, but multiple rumors suggest that the two phones will be available sometime during the third quarter.

o2_article_list_nokia_one_mini_one_max_nokia_eros_mars_mobiflipHTC One Max (aka the HTC T6) is said to feature a 5.9-inch 1920 x 1080 pixel display with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 clocked at 2.3 GHz, 3300 mAh battery and the same UltraPixel camera and BoomSound experience as the HTC One. An early sketch of the phone claimed the device would measure 140.4mm in length with the thickness of 9.4mm. HTC One mini is expected to run Android 4.2.2 with a 1.4GHz dual-core processor, 4.3-inch 720p display, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage and an Ultrapixel camera capable of shooting HTC Zoes and capturing full HD video. Both the HTC One mini and HTC One Max are expected to feature the same zero-gap aluminum construction as the HTC One.

While the HTC One mini will be going head-to-head with the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini in the mid-range segment, the HTC One Max is poised to take on the Sony Xperia Z UltraSamsung Galaxy Note 3 and other devices looking to bridge smartphone-tablet gap.

If given the choice to buy the HTC One, HTC One mini or HTC One Max, which would you choose?

Meet Android and Me: Nick Sarafolean

Posted: 03 Jul 2013 07:41 AM PDT

To some people, I’m known as the Gentle Giant, professional nerd, or Nicki among many others. But to most, I’m simply known as Nick, a tall guy who loves all things coffee and tech. And yeah, that sums it up pretty well. I also like to tweet pretty much anything that floats through my mind. (Follow me. @Zricon15). Some of that stuff includes (predictably) tech, coffee, photography, music and other miscellaneous things. Now to jump into my actual life.

Simply put, I’m a high school student. Approaching my senior year, life is becoming busier than ever but I’m still managing to cram most of what I want into it. But let’s back up a few years. My tech addiction really got started in ninth grade when I got my first smartphone, a Samsung Fascinate. But then, it was just an interest. I really liked the phone and all but it hadn’t become an integral part of my life yet. My first foray into the blogosphere was when I began to watch some of the YouTube videos that were coming out of PhoneDog. I grew interested in them and began to read the articles on the website. Eventually, I joined Twitter and began to follow the people who wrote for the site.

Being only a young teenager, there wasn’t much that I could do at that point. I didn’t have a job and couldn’t get new phones nearly as often as I wanted because of that. Nonetheless, I borrowed a family member’s upgrade and after exactly a year with the Fascinate, I graduated to a DROID RAZR. I began to get more involved in the blogging world and began to get to know some of the people who would later become my coworkers. By the beginning of that summer, I’d finished my sophomore year of high school and just turned sixteen.

It was at the beginning of June 2012 that I saw a call for a news editor at DroidDog.com. Thinking that this was at least a chance to get my name out there, I shot Joey an e-mail to let him know that I was interested. Imagine my surprise when I was offered a position as a news editor at DroidDog. Sure, it was unpaid at the time but I’d made it into the field and that was what mattered to me. I continued to write throughout the summer until school resumed and I had to drop a routine schedule. Throughout the school year, I pitched in if help was needed and I was around while occasionally writing up an editorial or review.

This summer, I began a regular shift at DroidDog again. But after just a few short weeks, Android and Me was bought by PhoneDog Media and we of the DroidDog team transferred over. And here I find myself, now a part of the incredible Android and Me team. In complete honesty, I would have never thought that I’d be working at Android and Me someday. I wasn’t even sure that I’d still be in the tech field for this long but here I stand, still a part of this thriving community.

Now you know a little bit about me and how I got into this whole tech blogging thing. Unfortunately, I don’t have the time or space to go into much personal detail, but please know that I do indeed have a life outside of the internet. In the coming months and hopefully even years, I hope to continue getting my type on with Android and Me and continue to provide you guys with content.

What I’m most excited about

College. There’s not even an ounce of doubt about that. In an interesting turn of events, I have actually become the single kid in my grade at the private school that I attend. Due to that fact, I became an honorary senior last year which has begun to make this year feel as though it’s entirely unnecessary. Of course, it’s not at all unnecessary but once it’s over, I’m headed straight down to Georgia to study business. Lest you think I don’t care about the site though, I’m also extremely excited about that. Delivering custom content right to your internet doorstep is one of my favorite things to do and as such, I’m very excited about doing just that.

What I’m going to be doing with Android and Me

For now, I’m going to be mostly writing news. I’ll occasionally throw in an editorial or review to shake things up, but my main focus is pumping out news for you early risers in the morning. When summer winds down to a close, we’ll see what happens with my schedule. I’m hoping to at least get some news writing in during the school year.

What devices have I owned?

Surprisingly, not too many. Just listing in chronological order: Samsung Juke, Samsung Fascinate, ASUS Eee Pad Transformer, Motorola DROID RAZR and a Samsung Galaxy S III. And yes, all of the phones have been on Verizon.

What phone do I daily drive?

At the moment, I’m using a Samsung Galaxy S III on Verizon. I picked it up in October of last year and haven’t really found a reason to get rid of it yet. Speaking software, I’m currently rooted and running a stable version of CM10.1. That’s a very recent acquisition though and before that I simply ran stock TouchWiz with the occasional launcher. However, when the HTC One comes out on Verizon, there’s a very high chance that I’ll be picking that up to replace my Galaxy S III. If not that, then most likely the next iPhone.

Me (4)

Facts about me:

  • I’m ridiculously tall at 6’5″ and still growing. That’s where Gentle Giant comes from.
  • I’ve recently discovered that I have a passion for coffee that’s quickly spiraling out of control.
  • Outside of Android and Me, I run a small photography business.
  • My taste in music is extremely diverse as long as it’s not hard rock, metal or most country.
  • I’ve been playing the piano for around nine years now.
  • I love playing video games. My heart nurses a soft spot for most things Valve.
  • I’m probably the only teenage guy that I know who watches both zombie thrillers and chick flicks. I also have a thing for singing shows such as American Idol or Glee.
  • I have an infectious laugh that occasionally causes me to break down into laughing fits because I’m laughing at my own laugh. Yeah, it’s that bad.

Black HTC One mini highlights subtle hardware tweaks

Posted: 03 Jul 2013 07:40 AM PDT

It’s been over two months since we saw the first leaked render of the HTC One mini, but that doesn’t mean we know everything about the device. New images of a black HTC One mini have surfaced, revealing a few subtle design elements that differ from the original HTC One. The new images of the HTC One mini show that the device will feature two separate volume buttons on the right side instead of the large, single-button setup that’s been used on the HTC One and Droid DNA. On the back of the device, the angle of the image shows a recessed camera lens and flash. This design change may have been made to protect the fragile plastic lens cover.

htc-one-mini (1) htc-one-mini (2) htc-one-mini (3) htc-one-mini (4)

The source of the images has confirmed that the HTC One mini is running on Android 4.2.2 with a dual-core processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage with a 4.3-inch 720p display (342 ppi). The HTC One mini is expected to hit the market in the third quarter, but it’s still unknown if the device will be picked up by the four major service providers here in the US.

How do you think the HTC One mini stacks up against the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini and dozens of other Android phones in the mid-range segment?

Falcon Pro finds hidden loophole to allow new users

Posted: 03 Jul 2013 06:59 AM PDT

Falcon Pro has easily had the bumpiest road of any third-party Twitter client. After running out of tokens for the app not once but twice, Falcon Pro was pretty much blocked by Twitter. But developer Joaquim Verges simply refuses to give up. Now he’s found a loophole that will continue to allow new users access to the app. There’s a hidden feature within the app that permits tokenless users access to help. Verges isn’t telling how you access this feature, but here’s a pretty big hint: go to the Falcon Pro Beta Testers group on Google+.

In other news, the app has finally run out of tokens for good. Users who still have a token will be able to use the app as normal, provided that they’re running version 2.0.4. If you don’t currently have the app installed on your phone, then just follow this link to download the updated version. We really have to give Verges credit for his determination. This guy just refuses to give up on his app, and he’s done some really interesting stuff to make sure it doesn’t have to die.

With this latest update, what are your thoughts on the whole situation with Falcon Pro?

20 million Samsung Galaxy S4s shipped

Posted: 03 Jul 2013 06:44 AM PDT

Ready for another dose of sales figures? Samsung has just released a new number regarding Galaxy S4 sales and boy, is it a big one. Within just the first two months of its release, Samsung has now shipped 20 million Galaxy S4s. In comparison, the Galaxy S III took 100 days to gain the honor of shipping 20 million. This report was confirmed to Korean reporters by Samsung co-CEO JK Shin, and it lines up with the report that Samsung shipped 10 million Galaxy S4s in its first month of availability.

Samsung also reported that 500,000 Galaxy S4s have already been sold in their home court of South Korea. These are some weighty numbers that are being tossed around by Samsung and should help to alleviate some stockholders’ fears that the Galaxy S4 isn’t selling well. Of course, shipping and selling are two different matters, but if vendors haven’t lowered their inventory on the Galaxy S4 then it must at least be selling.

What do you guys think of these latest figures? How do you feel about the Galaxy S4 and Samsung as a whole?
