Griffin WoodTones over-ear headphones review

Posted: 01 Jul 2013 09:19 AM PDT

As per my work here at AndroidGuys, I have no shortage of headphones lying around the apartment. This makes the competition all the more fierce when a new contender arrives. So, when Griffin sent over their new WoodTones over-the-ear headphones in lovely Sapele, I quickly put them through their paces.

Griffinsmall

Very lightweight for their size, these are really good looking. The finish on the “cups” is premium and has a satin-like quality to the touch. If you’re the type of person that thinks wood-grain only belongs on a steering wheel, you may be off-put by the stylized look. I personally prefer a solid matte finish (i.e. V-Moda Crossfade), but there’s nothing so ostentatious about these that would stop me from wearing them in public.

The “cups” (I admit, I don’t know the proper term) fit beautifully. I have, what I’d like to consider, normal-sized ears and I found great comfort in wearing them for extended periods. I found myself making a few phone calls after my playlist was over, with the built-in microphone, as my ears were too cozy to be pried away.

The sound is rich, warm, and clear. I found the volume to be about on-par with others in their price range, however I thought they performed a bit better at lower volumes when compared to some of my favorite <$100 pairs. They’re not going to top a higher-tier set of cans, but there’s also not any glaring inadequacies. Well worth the $100. They’ve earned a spot in my rotation.

Features & Specs (via Griffin) :

  • Real hand-turned wood enclosures with unique woodgrain
  • Wooden housings enhance voice and bass frequencies without coloring the sound
  • 50 mm moving coil neodymium magnet drivers for powerful sound
  • Over 90-degree pivoting earphones
  • One-size-fits-all headband
  • Impedance: 32 ohms
  • Sensitivity: 108 dB ± 3 dB
  • Frequency response: 20 to 20,000 Hz
  • Lightweight for comfort
  • Detachable 1/8″ (3.5 mm) cable with built-in mic
  • Built-in mic also has controls for Siri, call answering and hangup and audio (play, pause, next/previous track)

ASUS rep inadvertently tips the next-gen Nexus 7 specs

Posted: 01 Jul 2013 07:01 AM PDT

Oops.

Now that we’ve crossed the one year mark since the release of the Nexus 7 we would assume that a second generation of the affordable tablet is on the horizon. Indeed, a number of specifications have been leaked for the better part of 2013 however it’s largely been about the presumed higher resolution display. Thanks to a recent chat with an ASUS rep, we might know more clearly as what to expect.

  • 7 inch LED with 1980*1200 resolution
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 Quad Core CPU / Snapdragon APQ8064 CPU
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 32GB internal storage
  • 5Mpx rear camera and 1.2Mpx front camera
  • Android 4.3
  • 4000mAh battery
  • Wifi a/b/g/n,Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC enabled
  • LTE / WCDMA / GSM support

How does that suit you? We’ve got the higher resolution screen, faster processor, a front and rear camera, and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. As to when we might get to see the refreshed Nexus 7 tablet, the ASUS rep says before the end of July.

Proceed With Caution

We don’t have to tell you this, but these sort of things are very easily faked and come from a seemingly loose-lipped company rep. It’s hard to imagine that someone inside ASUS would want to be so forthcoming with the details, but whatever. It could be true, it could be an elaborate ruse.  Thankfully, we won’t be waiting long for more details to shake out.

Assuming the new Nexus 7 arrives with Android 4.3 before the end of the month we might also expect Google to officially detail the latest build of Jelly Bean soon.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 rumored for September 4

The next-generation of Samsung Galaxy Note will arrive on September 4, reports AndroidGeeks. Citing an inside source, the blog advises that the Galaxy Note 3 will be unveiled at an Unpacked Event just prior to the start of IFA. For what it’s worth, the previous two models were introduced at roughly the same time in their respective years.

What specs to expect?

The latest round of rumors suggest that Samsung will employ either a Super AMOLED and/or IPS LCD displays for the Galaxy Note 3. In all likelihood there will be different display types and/or CPU’s for various markets. Most recently we’ve heard (translate) that Samsung is using a 5.99-inch flexible display for the smartphone. Other sizes rumored in the past include 5.7-inch and some in excess of 6-inches. Either way, we’re expecting the 1920x1080p resolution that has become commonplace for top-tier smartphones.

In terms of processor, the Samsung Galaxy Note may boast either a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 CPU (with quad-core 2.3 GHz Krait 400 CPU and Adreno 320 GPU) or Samsung's own octo-core Exynos 5 Octa CPU clocked at 1.8 GHz.

Additional specifications that we might anticipate for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 include a 13 megapixel camera (like the Galaxy S4), 2GB RAM, storage of 16GB, 32GB, and/or 64GB with microSD expansion, and stylus support.

Likely to feature the latest version of TouchWiz Nature UX, the Galaxy Note 3 should boast all of the familiar camera modes and Samsung-specific apps and services. We might hope for Android 4.3 Jelly Bean now that it’s starting to leak out however a more likely scenario calls for the Android 4.2.2 flavor.

Press render leaks for Verizon’s HTC One

Posted: 01 Jul 2013 06:09 AM PDT

It’s not as it we’d expect it to look any different from the other carriers, but the seemingly official render of Verizon’s HTC One has surfaced. Appearing as it would for any other wireless provider, the only difference here is the Verizon indicator for 4G LTE and a modified home screen.

What does this mean? More than likely this is an indicator that things are moving along and that the device will be ready for launch in no time at all. Don’t read too much into that September 5 date; it’s not an accurate way of guessing arrival dates.  Then again, it would technically fall under the whole “later this summer“.

With that in mind we have to ask, are you still waiting for the HTC One to come to Verizon or have you opted for another carrier? Perhaps you decided for a different smartphone altogether? Let us know in the comments below!
