WSJ: Google to promote Moto X with $500 million budget

Posted: 11 Jul 2013 01:24 PM PDT

A day without news or a rumor about the Moto X is a day wasted. At least, that is how it seems as of late.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google plans to promote the Moto X with a budget of $500 million in North America and Europe. The sources further claim that this huge budget was enough to convince all four major US mobile carriers to carry the Moto X. Incidentally, we’ve heard the rumors of multiple carrier support for a while.

moto_x_720The sources confirmed that the Moto X will feature the engraving and back-cover customization option as well. Google Nexus devices come with tagline which is “Pure Google” experience. I think with Moto X, Google will be calling it the “Pure User” experience – giving the user control over some of the design factors of the phone.

Although nothing is confirmed about the specs we have heard that the device doesn’t stand a chance against HTC One or Samsung Galaxy S4 – in terms of sheer hardware. Instead, the phone could center around user experience (software) and/or cost.

Do you think Moto X will stand a chance? Tell us about it in the comment box below.

leak_vzmap

A newly uncovered Verizon roadmap tells us that we might look for the HTC One and Motorola X in August. According to details obtained by PhoneArena, the HTC One will come to Verizon’s lineup on August 1, followed three weeks later by the Motorola X.

The full roadmap provides insight into other, more broad rollouts and introductions and may be of interest to some of you. We’re mainly focused on the two smartphones but are quick to recognize that none of the Droid devices are listed. We previously heard that the Droid Ultra would debut on August 8 so we would expect to see that listed. Also absent are the Droid Maxx and Droid Mini.

free_photo_ebook

So you’re new(ish) to taking pictures with that 8-megapixel or 13-megapixel camera on the back of your Android and need help. Which setting should you use and how do you go about selecting the proper angle or post-photo effect? Indeed, it can feel a bit overwhelming. Fortunately for you there is a free 104 page eBook that helps address your basic and intermediate needs.

focus_tips

Free for a limited time, Colby Brown’s Android Photography: Take better photos with your Android phone can be picked up in the Google Play Store. Some of it might be a little too simple for a few of you but we definitely recommend downloading nonetheless. If nothing else, you can use it to show your friends the strategies you employ for those world-class sushi pictures. Additionally, this eBook delves into some of the more popular apps for adding effects, focal points, cropping, and more. We also like that Brown touches on the various ways to store and/or share your photos.

Even though the price is $0.00, you will be prompted to complete the transaction with Google Wallet. This is necessary in order for the book to be delivered to your account. If you don’t have a credit card associated to your Google Wallet account, or if you don’t have a Google Wallet account at all, you’ll be prompted to add a new payment method upon first adding music or books from Google Play.

Google working to create more obvious offline maps in Google Maps

Posted: 11 Jul 2013 09:07 AM PDT

google_maps_offline_720

Google heard your complaints loud and clear; an update is on the horizon which will address outcry from Google Maps users.

You know how Google removed the easy offline maps feature in the new Google Maps experience? Yes, we know it’s still there (OK Maps) but it’s nowhere near as obvious as before. Well, Google has heard the voices of those unhappy with the change and are working to make things right… and fast.

That's why our engineering team has been working around the clock to add a “Make this map area available offline” card below the search box for easier access.

Also, Google is making it a bit more clear as to what happened with Latitude and where you can find your friends.  Look for the update (to this week’s update) to roll out starting on Thursday, July 11.

LG intros world’s thinnest full HD LCD panel ahead of August 7 event

Posted: 10 Jul 2013 08:55 PM PDT

lg_g2_leak_engadget

In what can only be viewed a coincidence, LG has just announced the world’s thinnest full HD LCD display panel. Measuring in at 5.2-inches, the screen promises better gripability, superior visibility, and lighter weight. The whole thing is a mere 2.2mm thick with a thin 2.3mm bezel.

"Today's introduction of the world's slimmest Full HD LCD panel represents an exciting advancement for the high-end smartphone segment, and is possible due to our world-class expertise in IPS and touch technologies," said Dr. Byeong-Koo Kim, Vice President and Head of LG Display's IT and Mobile Development Group. "LG Display will continue its commitment to developing products that maximize consumer value as well as opening new doors for the mobile and tablet PC industry."

Surely all of this has nothing to do with the press event scheduled for August 7. Seriously, this is exactly the stuff we’ve been hearing about for the upcoming LG G2 smartphone. In case you haven’t had a chance to see it in action, we recommend checking out the video below.  It’s a downright thing of magical, unicorn-infused beauty.

LG Display Introduces World's Slimmest Full HD LCD Panel for Smartphones

New panel will enable sleeker Full HD smartphones delivering superior viewing experience

Seoul, Korea (July 11, 2013) – LG Display [NYSE: LPL, KRX: 034220], a leading innovator of display technology, today announced that it will unveil the world's slimmest Full HD LCD panel for smartphones. The state-of-the-art 5.2-inch panel is an exciting advancement for the premium mobile device market enabling sleeker Full HD smartphones featuring better "grip-ability" and a superior viewing experience.

Only 2.2mm thin with a 2.3mm bezel, LG Display's new panel is both slimmest and narrowest among existing Full HD LCD panels designed for mobile devices. This world's slimmest Full HD LCD panel will provide larger visible display space on smartphones, critical as mobile devices are used for multimedia viewing more than ever before. Additionally, the panel will make devices easier to grip as well as lighter in weight.

Key to realizing the world's slimmest panel is LG Display's Advanced One-Glass-Solution (OGS), the latest touch technology enabling an enhanced touch screen experience, developed and applied to the new panel for the first time ever. Dual Flexible Printed Circuits, superior to a single circuit, have been inserted between the panel and touch film, reducing the number of lines on the panel by more than 30 percent. Utilization of a direct bonding system has also resulted in Optical Clear Resin between the panel and touch film for greater brightness.

The new panel's superiority in displaying resolution, brightness, and contrast ratio results in enhanced outdoor readability. By utilizing 1,080X1,920 pixels consisting of Red, Green, Blue (RGB) sub-pixels, the panel is a true Full HD display. And with a brightness of 535 nits at maximum, LG Display's panel outperforms all current mobile Full HD LCD panels. Finally, measuring contrast in real-life surroundings with Ambient Contrast Ratio results in a reading of 3.74:1 based on 10,000 lux, confirming the perfect performance of the panel even in strong outdoor sunlight conditions. Renowned testing firm Intertek has officially certified these results.

Nexus 5 to be based on LG G2, coming out with Android 5.0 in October?

Posted: 10 Jul 2013 03:31 PM PDT

Back in May, LG made it clear that there is “No Nexus 5 in the pipeline“ , but we know that these big companies never tell us the true story. A Korean tech site known as Daum reported that LG’s next Nexus will be based on the hardware of the LG G2 and it will be launched with Android 5.0 in October. Last time we heard about Android 5.0, we came to know that it will be released in October as well, coincidence?

nexus4_hero_image_720It will be based closely on the hardware of the LG G2, which will be released soon as a new flagship device by LG and it is really dashing, so if the report is true, then I can say that the Nexus 5 will be a sexy and a powerful smartphone. It is further said that both Nexus and LG G2 are being developed in parallel and last year, both LG Optimus and Nexus 4 shared almost the same specs. Maybe, LG is going down the same road again.

LG G2 is coming out on August 7, so may be by that time, we might see something more detailed about the Nexus 5 as well. What are your thoughts on it? Tell us about it in the comment box below.

HTC M8 to be 2014′s flagship device, HTC One upgraded version coming as well?

Posted: 10 Jul 2013 01:39 PM PDT

Remember the time when we used to talk about the HTC M7? The device which was later on launched as the HTC One, considered as the best Android smartphone to date by the Taiwanese manufacturer. Well, One is a great phone and it is really well-received by the critics, but everything gets old by time, doesn’t it? It seems HTC is already working on the successor of it, as Pocket-Lint is reporting that they are working on an updated version of the HTC One which will be released later this year. Also a 2014 flagship model will go under the codename M8.

htc_one_720About the M8, HTC is already thinking about it and planning to come up with a different codename to keep it safe from the “hidden camera’s eye”. Though, the source said that “plans could be changed”, so lets take this rumor with a grain of salt.

If we do a little analysis, the codename “M8″ does make sense as a successor to “M7″ (HTC One) and it is also obvious that HTC will release a flagship smartphone in 2014, but the question is when? About the upgraded version of the HTC One. If we look at the history, HTC launched the upgraded version of HTC One X known as the HTC One X+ with a better chipset and some other tweaks, so yes there’s a possibility we might see an upgraded version of One, but isn’t it already perfect or there are some problems?

Well, how about we wait for HTC to come out with some official words, shall we? Though there’s no harm in talkng about it. Tell us what are your thoughts about it in the comment box below.
