New major security threat for Android devices revealed, but Google already has a patch in place this time

After all the commotion about the latest major security vulnerability to Android devices, you would think things on the security side of the platform would quiet down for a bit. However, that’s not the case, as a Chinese site has posted details about an application exploit similar to Bluebox’s earlier revealed loophole that would allow apps to avoid signature verification to run malicious code on an Android device.  However, the vulnerability was found in older code that was replaced with a security fix, so Google was already aware of the problem and has patched it up as soon as they were made aware of it. It may take awhile for that type of security patch to hit devices in the wild, but like the Bluebox vulnerability, Google has done all they can to take care of things on their end.

If you want to read up on the specifics of the vulnerability, hit the links below. It’s a pretty small, complicated vulnerability that would be pretty tricky for malware to pull off on most devices, but it’s interesting nonetheless.

Android co-creator talks about fragmention, considers it an “overblown issue”

Posted: 11 Jul 2013 04:29 PM PDT

Android_One_Billion_2017

One of Android’s biggest criticisms is the level of fragmentation in the platform. Rich Miner, co-creator of Android, thinks a bit differently, though.

On Tuesday he had a few words to say about Android fragmentation problems, which was mostly that he considers it to be an “overblown issue,” and with 1.5 million Android phones being activated every day, the fragmentation isn’t affecting sales much. He also made a few good points that the average consumer doesn’t actually know what kinds of features they’re missing out on because their phone isn’t updated. As long as the phone works and does what they want, most people are happy with phones regardless of what version of software they think they’re running.

Obviously, this doesn’t mean fragmentation is a complete non-issue. Security threats are problems that take longer to solve because of Android’s open nature, as we’ve recently seen. For the most part, though, Google has taken steps towards minimizing those risks, and so far Android’s strategy has been working pretty well.

Google_Plus_

Google pushed out a new update to their Google+ application yesterday which will allow users to see their friends’ “+1″ activity on their own stream on their Android devices, much like you currently can on the full browser version. The feature lets you comment on their +1 activity as well, making it a lot more social.

If you wish to change your privacy settings for +1′s, head over to the settings menu and then click on the “Edit” button. The update should be making it over to iOS pretty soon as well. Hit the break for the Google+ download link in the Play Store.

Google_Maps_Offline

Although the new Google Maps update has been nothing short of a Godsend, many some of you have complained about not being able to make your maps offline… despite Google actually leaving an indirect method to save maps and stuff. Fortunately, the Google Maps team (through its Google+ page) went ahead and listened to you all and implemented a simple “Make this map area available offline” card below the search box for easier access. Oh and Google quietly implemented a ”Where’s Latitude?” as well for those of you who still want an explanation for why Google decided to chuck deuces to its Latitude service.

So yes friends, Google does listen and care about its minions. Huzzah!

Sony sends invites for ‘Exclusive Booth Unveiling’ on Sept. 4, ‘Honami’ flagship announcement expected

Posted: 11 Jul 2013 11:15 AM PDT

Sony_Invite

Sony just sent out invites to what they’re calling an “Exclusive Booth Unveiling,” set to take place on September 4th in Berlin, which is just a couple days before IFA 2013. It’s expected that Sony will announce their next flagship, currently codenamed ‘Honami,’ at the event. It’s a pretty good tactic, as its buzz should avoid being drowned out by the other products being announced later that week at IFA.

Many rumors say that the Honami’s official name will be the “i1,” and will pack a 5-inch 1080p display, a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, and a powerful 20MP rear shooter. More details to come as we find out more info about the Honami/i1— there’s a lot of time between now and September, so expect plenty more information to leak.

‘One Today’ charity app by Google released to public, invite no longer necessary

Posted: 11 Jul 2013 11:04 AM PDT

One_Today

Three months ago, Google released a charity application to the Play Store which allowed users to give away a dollar a day (or more) to a different cause each day. However, the initial release was only open to those who applied and received an invitation to use it. Starting today, invitations are no longer necessary, but users still do have to be from the United States.

The application offers the feature of making your donations public, sharing them on your G+ page, and prompting others to give money as well. All of the user’s donations, minus a 1.9% transaction fee, go straight to the cause. We’ll see if they expand the app to be international in the future, but nothing is expected at this point. Check out the link to the app in the Play Store after the break.

LG to release the slimmest full HD LCD display in the world, most likely for upcoming G2

Posted: 11 Jul 2013 10:50 AM PDT

lg-display-650x470

LG announced last night that they have successfully created the world’s thinnest full HD LCD for smartphones. The display is 5.2-inches and is only 2.2-mm thick. It’s also obviously a true full HD (1080 x 1920) with its RGB sub-pixels. Not only will it just look sharper, it will provide for better outdoor readability, an enhanced touch experience and better “grip-ability.”

It’s quite obvious at this point that the display will ship with the new LG G2 set for announcement in NYC on August 7. The phone is looking like it’s going to shape up to be an absolute beast at this point with both superior RAM as well as this sick display. Check out the full presser after the break.

LG Display Introduces World's Slimmest Full HD LCD Panel for Smartphones

New panel will enable sleeker Full HD smartphones delivering superior viewing experience

Seoul, Korea (July 11, 2013) – LG Display [NYSE: LPL, KRX: 034220], a leading innovator of display technology, today announced that it will unveil the world's slimmest Full HD LCD panel for smartphones. The state-of-the-art 5.2-inch panel is an exciting advancement for the premium mobile device market enabling sleeker Full HD smartphones featuring better "grip-ability" and a superior viewing experience.

Only 2.2mm thin with a 2.3mm bezel, LG Display's new panel is both slimmest and narrowest among existing Full HD LCD panels designed for mobile devices. This world's slimmest Full HD LCD panel will provide larger visible display space on smartphones, critical as mobile devices are used for multimedia viewing more than ever before. Additionally, the panel will make devices easier to grip as well as lighter in weight.

Key to realizing the world's slimmest panel is LG Display's Advanced One-Glass-Solution (OGS), the latest touch technology enabling an enhanced touch screen experience, developed and applied to the new panel for the first time ever. Dual Flexible Printed Circuits, superior to a single circuit, have been inserted between the panel and touch film, reducing the number of lines on the panel by more than 30 percent. Utilization of a direct bonding system has also resulted in Optical Clear Resin between the panel and touch film for greater brightness.

The new panel's superiority in displaying resolution, brightness, and contrast ratio results in enhanced outdoor readability. By utilizing 1,080X1,920 pixels consisting of Red, Green, Blue (RGB) sub-pixels, the panel is a true Full HD display. And with a brightness of 535 nits at maximum, LG Display's panel outperforms all current mobile Full HD LCD panels. Finally, measuring contrast in real-life surroundings with Ambient Contrast Ratio results in a reading of 3.74:1 based on 10,000 lux, confirming the perfect performance of the panel even in strong outdoor sunlight conditions. Renowned testing firm Intertek has officially certified these results.

"Today's introduction of the world's slimmest Full HD LCD panel represents an exciting advancement for the high-end smartphone segment, and is possible due to our world-class expertise in IPS and touch technologies," said Dr. Byeong-Koo Kim, Vice President and Head of LG Display's IT and Mobile Development Group. "LG Display will continue its commitment to developing products that maximize consumer value as well as opening new doors for the mobile and tablet PC industry."

Leaked Verizon roadmap shows HTC One and Moto X release dates

Posted: 11 Jul 2013 10:16 AM PDT

Verizon_Roadmap_HTC_One_Motorola_X

Leaked roadmaps are always good indicators on when devices will be released, and Verizon’s latest just leaked. Everyone has been wondering when Big Red will release the HTC One, and it looks like the wait will finally end on August 1st. They also list the Moto X, which is slated for August 23rd. Ironically there is no mention of the DROID Ultra, which probably means we won’t see that one until the fall.  Someone still needs to tell me why Verizon waited so long to release the One.
