Evernote and Glympse team up to track your location for note trails

Posted: 03 Jul 2013 10:58 PM PDT

glympse

Glympse is a popular geolocation application for sharing your location with anyone in the world, without the need for extra accounts or social networks. Today, they’re taking their location services a bit further by announcing a partnership with Evernote that will allow users to export “trails” of their locations to an Evernote folder to track things like road trips or vacations. The notes will contain the duration of a shared location, date, time, and several other bits of information to keep an extremely detailed record of where you’ve been. It’s a pretty cool new feature that’s live in the update today for current users of Glympse, but if you want to test it out, both Glympse and Evernote are free. Check out the press release below.

Glympse Real-Time Location Trails Now Saved Within Evernote

New Integration Allows Glympse Users to Archive Location Details in Evernote

SEATTLE – July 3, 2013 – It was only a matter of time before Glympse, Inc., the world's leading real-time location sharing service, began working with Evernote, the company that is helping the world remember everything, to allow users to easily save their Glympse "trails" in one place. Now included within Evernote Trunk in the Lifestyle and Travel Category, Glympse users can easily choose Evernote directly from the mobile app and automatically archive their location broadcast.

"Many of our users have requested a way to save a snapshot of their Glympse map trails so they can view road trips, keep runs and bike rides, archive a special trip abroad, or just remember an interesting location. We wanted to make this feature simple and easy," said Bryan Trussel, co-founder and CEO of Glympse. "Evernote is the perfect solution: users retain complete control over how they share their location and can choose to save their trips to their personal Evernote account for review at a later date."

Sharing to Evernote from Glympse is easy: like sharing to Facebook or Twitter, a user simply signs in to their Evernote account in the Glympse mobile app. They can then send a Glympse to their Evernote account to automatically save their trail for future reference. The completed trail is automatically stored in a folder in Evernote named "My Glympse Trails." From this folder, users are able to see snapshots of their saved trails along with the details (including recipients, date, time, and duration of the Glympse as well as the destination if included) of each Glympse saved.

“Evernote helps people remember their lives, and a big part of living is traveling from place to place. With Glympse, those trips can be recorded alongside an Evernote’s users other memories. It’s a natural fit," said Rafe Needleman, director of developer relations.

Samsung buys Boxee for $30 million

Posted: 03 Jul 2013 10:53 PM PDT

boxeeAccording to a report from Israeli business site The Marker, Samsung has completed a deal to purchase Boxee for $30 million. Boxee, the company that has created streaming solutions via set-top boxes and home theatre PC software to your PC and TV, had been looking for a buyer and more funding for the past few months before they found Samsung. Samsung will continue to employ Boxee’s 40 workers.

Of course, initial thoughts are that Samsung will use Boxee to enhance their smart TVs. Could they also use the software to start a video streaming service, something like Google TV?

Corning to create phone displays with highly anti-reflective and antimicrobial coating

Posted: 03 Jul 2013 10:38 PM PDT

corning-gorilla-glass

Corning is best known for their highly resistant Gorilla Glass displays that are used in many, many smartphones around the world, but there’s a lot that goes into those displays aside from just being tough to break.  Their latest development is coming in the form of screens that are extremely anti-reflective and extremely resistant to germs, which is a first for the display industry. The glass that Corning is investing is can theoretically tolerate the weight of 10,000 elephants and barely 1% less transparent than air on a clear day, so it’s some pretty impressive stuff.

The bigger points are that anti-reflection tech and anti-germ tech, though. Everyone knows smartphones can be kinda tough to see in direct sunlight, which makes outdoor use difficult on phones. Corning’s latest anti-reflection coating makes a glass panel almost completely transparent, so all of that nasty glare disappears and it’s much easier to see what’s being displayed below the screen, which is in this case your smartphone. Not only will that improve outdoor visibility, but the coating also helps to destroy invisible germs that your phone naturally picks up while being used. After two hours, Corning’s antimicrobial coating destroys nearly every germ on the screen. Fancy, right?

There’s a lot of really technical stuff behind the tech, so if you want to see the full video, check it out after the break.

Motorola X Phone will be very customizable, according to report

Posted: 03 Jul 2013 10:30 PM PDT

x_phone_colorsIf the rumors are right, then customization is going to be taken to a whole new level with the Motorola X Phone. According to sources speaking to ABC News, customers will be able to select the color of their device, and engrave a message on the back before shipment. The phone will be sold standard at carrier stores, and customized version will be sold through a website. Customers will also be able to upload a photo and personalized wallpaper to include.

However, despite earlier reports, besides a few storage options, the inner hardware will not be customizable. Sensors will be included though, and they sound awesome. For example, a flick on the phone will activate the camera, and the phone will automatically switch to speakerphone once it detects the phone is in the car.

The X Phone is supposed to launch by October of this year. Right now, it looks like it will be US-only, but we will see soon enough.
