Sony QX10 and QX100 "Lens-Style Camera" details leak in full
Sep 3rd 2013, 20:47, by Robert Nelson

We recently saw the press release leak for the Sony Zperia Z1 (Honami) smartphone. That leak confirmed the specs for the handset and it looks like another Sony press release has leaked. This other is for the QX10 and QX100 “Lens-Style Cameras” and has come by way of Sony Alpha Rumors. That being said, we now have details to include the specs and pricing as well as a rough timeframe for release.

Both the QX10 and QX100 are devices that are designed to work with your smartphone or tablet. These are described as being able to merge the “creative power of a premium compact camera with the convenience and connectivity of today's smartphones.” They connect to your device using WiFi and are able to shoot what Sony is describing as “high-quality images and full HD videos.” It was also said that these images and videos will be able to “rival a premium compact camera.”

The QX10 and QX100 will both use the display on the smartphone (or tablet) as a real-time viewfinder. The display will also be used to release the shutter, start/stop the video recording, adjust the settings and more. These will be compatible with the Sony Play Memories mobile app which is available for Android and they can also be paired using NFC. Sony has said the images will be saved on the phone (or tablet) and the camera and can then be shared over social media.

Looking at the QX10 and we find a device that will have an 18.2 megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor and 10x optical zoom Sony G Lens. This one will weigh in at less than 4 ounces with measurements of 2.5 x 2.5 x 1.3 inches. The QX10 will also have built-in Optical SteadyShot which will protect against shake. Users will also find the QX10 to have Program Auto, Intelligent Auto and Superior Auto modes.

Shifting over to the QX100 and we find a device that will have a 1.0-inch, 20.2 megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor. Sony clarifies that this will be the identical sensor found in the Cyber-shot RX100 II camera. This one will also have a wide-aperture Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T lens with 3.6x optical zoom, BIONZ image processor and dedicated control ring for “camera-like adjustment of manual focus and zoom.” In addition the QX100 will have several shooting modes to include Program Auto, Aperture Priority, Intelligent Auto and Superior Auto.

The QX10 will be priced at $250 and the QX100 will be $500. Both are expected to be available “later this month.”

Android 4.4 name announcement brings candy related spoofs from Kit Kat
Sep 3rd 2013, 20:12, by Robert Nelson

Google attracted quite a bit of attention earlier this morning when they dropped the name for an upcoming Android release. We are referring to Android 4.4, which has officially been dubbed Kit Kat. Yes, as in the candy bar. While some may be thinking Google is playing a joke, the details have come by way of Sundar Pichai who has not only shared an image of the Kit Kat statue on the lawn at Google, but also the Android 4.4 teaser page.

While Google attracted some attention, it seems we now have some goodies coming from the company itself. The official @KITKAT Twitter account has said they are “proud to unwrap Android KITKAT” and we have also seen a rather entertaining video posted on the Kit Kat YouTube channel. The video is on the shorter side and comes in at just a little more than a minute.

Perhaps key here, the video spoofs a tech announcement. Some of the highlights here include how the Kit Kat has “adjustable orientation” that allows it to “work perfectly in portrait or landscape for a truly panoramic taste experience that will leave you up in the cloud.” The rest of the video touches on the global coverage (even at work), a 10mm thickness, one finger length, four finger width and options for 2 mega-bites, 4 mega-bites and a chunky-bite option.

Candy related spoofs aside, a recent Vancouver Sun article revealed how Google approached Hershey “about six to nine months again for permission to use the name.” That bit came by way of Jennifer Podhajsky, vice-president of U.S. chocolate at Hershey who also spoke about how “Kit Kat's jingle is a good fit for people taking a break to look at their smartphones or tablets.” And on the flips side, she also touched on how “Kit Kat consumers are young, vibrant consumers of candy and chocolate bars, and that's a nice match with Android.”

All that being said, while we imagine some are still surprised about the name — one thing is certain in that there seems to be much more chatter for Kit Kat in just this one day alone than there ever was for Key Lime Pie. As of now we are looking towards October as a potential timeframe for release. We are also hoping Google doesn’t make us all wait till October 31, which is Halloween and also the day for both tricks and treats.

Sony Xperia Z1 Honami specs confirmed in press release leak
Sep 3rd 2013, 19:40, by Robert Nelson

Details of the Sony Honami have been leaking for quite some time now. In fact, it seems that just about every aspect of the phone had been revealed at one point or another. And well, it looks like the leaks have concluded with the press release, which has recently been revealed by the folks at Xperia Blog. Simply put, Sony will be announcing the Xperia Z1 Honami tomorrow and the specs have all been confirmed with this latest leak.

We can say that majority of those leaks had been spot on. The Honami will indeed be launching with a 5-inch display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080. The handset will be running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and powered by a quad-core 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974) processor with 2GB of RAM and a microSD card slot with support for cards up to 64GB in size. Other goodies here include IP55 and IP58 certifications to protect against dust and water as well as a variety of colors to include black, white and purple.

The handset will also have Adreno 330 graphics and a 3000 mAh battery. Shifting over to the camera and we have talk coming from Sony about how the rear-facing camera is the “world’s leading camera in a smartphone.” Sony goes on to mention how this has been proven by "independent testing” and means the Xperia Z1 has the “best overall image quality of all leading smartphones.” The rear-facing camera will be a 1/2.3-inch 20.7MP Exmor RS CMOS image sensor.

Further details here also include how the Xperia Z1 will be using Sony’s G Lens setup which means a 27mm wide angle and bright F2.0 aperture as well as the "BIONZ for mobile" image processing engine. Aside from the camera hardware, there will also be some software related goodies in terms of images. Some of these include Social Live which means live broadcasts to Facebook and Info-Eye which is described as being a “visual search function that provides related information on landmarks.”

Sony also took some time to detail the accessories — including the QX10 and QX100 “lens-style” cameras. There wasn’t much revealed on these, but Sony is describing them as being a camera that mounts on a smartphone and is operated through the display. Another Sony accessory included in this list is the Smartwatch 2, which they are saying is a second screen for the Zperia Z1.

Bottom line here, given the leak of the press release, it seems the only points still unknown are the carrier and pricing details. But with that in mind, Sony did mention that the Xperia Z1 would launch globally in September.

Samsung Galaxy Note III concept render gives us an early preview
Sep 3rd 2013, 19:24, by Cory Gunther

The Samsung Galaxy Note III is no secret, and as we all know will be officially unveiled in Berlin tomorrow, September 4th. With leaks appearing almost daily along with new rumors, today we have something a little different. Based on leaked real images of the front panel added to a few other leaks as of late we have a concept (not real) image of what the Galaxy Note III could look like.

note-3-concept-note-2-1

What you see above is a concept that was put together by Stellist Design using the same leaked front panel we saw last week, along with the wallpaper, and a few other specs. It isn’t a final look, but probably extremely close to what Samsung will be showing us come tomorrow afternoon live on stage.

We know the device will be coming in with a large 5.68-inch display, and reports suggest it won’t be much larger than the previous Note II, thanks to those super sleek and small bezels you see above surrounding the 1080p screen. Below is another render from the same team, comparing it to the Note II, but we’re not too sure if the sizing will be accurate or not.

note-3-concept-note-2

With a 2.3 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor and likely 3GB of RAM, a 13 megapixel camera, a full 1080p HD display and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean all on board the Galaxy Note III is set to be quite the competitor to anything released over the next 6 months. And we’ll know absolutely all the details come tomorrow live in Berlin for IFA. Who wants one?
