Samsung Galaxy S3 to hit Sprint on July 1st, hopefully for real this time

Good news all around for potential Sprint Galaxy S3 owners today!

Earlier we had posted that 32GB Galaxy S3 units had started shipping out, and now it seems that we've got a definite date of store availability after a decent delay. Starting July 1st, you should be able to swagger on up to the Sprint store of your choice and plop down $199 to get the latest and greatest. Websales and Telesales will also be available, and these routes will actually be your only options for getting the 32GB option for $249. Apparently they got those inventory issues settled, much to quite a few people's delight. If you've been rethinking your purchase of the Galaxy S3 (on Sprint or otherwise), feel free to check out our review of the device.

Google takes on home media with Nexus Q

Google's off to the races today with announcements across a multitude of platforms, some of them expected, some not so much. Falling into the latter category, Google has announced a surprising new member to its Nexus line: the Nexus Q, a home media centerpiece designed to integrate with Google's cloud media products. The device has a simple but elegant orb design, with no visible controls whatsoever. Instead the device works off of a symbiotic relationship between it and Google phones and tablets, wherein it plays whatever is directed to it from connected devices. In a party or get-together setting, multiple phones can add music and video to a shared community jukebox playing on the Q, which can be connected via HDMI to an existing stereo or to two proprietary speakers that are available seperately. The Nexus Q is available for preorder for $299.99 along with the optional speakers on Google Play now.

Android: More than 400 million devices activated so far – daily activation crosses 1 million

Android is now almost 4 years old and when it was launched, it faced a lot of criticism but Google never gave up. Today, they launched the latest version of Android, known as the Jelly Bean, the most advanced and well-crafted version of Android to date. Last year at Google I/O, Google told us that around 100 million Android devices are activated so far, and then in six months, it reached the mark of 200 million. Now at Google I/O 2012, Google let the cat of the bag by announcing that more than 400 million devices are activated so far, and almost 1 million devices are activated daily.

That's literally an amazing achievement for Google and Android, and that clearly tells us that Android is just winning and winning. Folks, tell us what do you think about all this in the comment box below.

Google Chrome for Android now out of Beta

Who can forget the debut of Google Chrome for Android? About 4 months ago, Google launched the beta version of the famous browser in Google Play store, and Google told us that it's a matter of few weeks that the browser will be out of the beta version, and we made a guess that probably at Google I/O, the search giant will make the big announcement - and we were right.

The stable version of Google Chrome is available in the Google Play store, and just like before, it's only available for devices running on Android 4.0 and higher. Also Google Chrome for Android is default browser on the brand new Nexus 7 tablet, no doubt Nexus 7 is a complete package. There are some minor changes in the UI, and some  important stability and performance fixes. Though I hope to see Google Chrome for Android for devices running on Gingerbread, Honeycomb etc.

Phillip Humm, T-Mobile USA CEO, resigns

In a completely unforeseen announcement, Phillip Humm, T-Mobile USA CEO, has resigned today. T-Mobile's COO Jim Alling will fill in as interim CEO until another is found.

This change is not only unexpected, but fast; Humm will leave his position immediately, and will likely be going completely outside of T-Mobile's parent company, Deutche Telekom, and will be heading to Europe to be with  family during said transition.

Android Jellybean 4.1 Announced, coming in July: Here’s what comes with it

Finally, Google has announced Android 4.1 Jelly Bean (That's two words, not one!) at Google I/O, with a release in July. So now, you're thinking, what comes with it? Lets take a look:

Expanded Notifications

Notifications in the pull-down menu will now give out more information, and will be fully expandable, meaning you can do actions straight from the notifications menu. Miss a call? Call them back OR message them from the pull-down. See the body of an email. Reply to all attendees of a calendar invite. Like and reply to social media. Sounds great!

Google Now

Google Now is really cool.Google now is an intuitive feature that strives to make your whole life easier. Have a calendar notification with a location attached? Google Now will figure out your usual travel method to the location, map it out using that travel method, calculate the time needed to get there, and set a reminder for you to leave at that time. Public transit? No problem, it'll even calculate stops. It will also show you places of interest on your route, and keep you updated on sports scores, flights, currency rates, etc., all while keeping you organized.

Project Butter

We've all experienced some lag with our Android devices. Now, Google is looking to fix that with "Project Butter". Visualizations of corn-on-the-cob aside, this is exciting. While ICS always aspired to get the lag out of Android, it never quite seemed to "get there". While ICS always relied mostly on UI improvements, Jelly Bean actually works under the hood to bring more optimization. For example: when you touch the screen, the CPU will automatically ramp up so it responds better. And how about 60FPS? Sounds good on this end.

Offline Voice Actions

Who hasn't tried to use Google Voice Actions in a place where data is, well, not so great? It's a frustrating experience to say the least. With Google Voice Actions coming offline from the cloud, you can use it without ever having a data connection.

Knowledge Graph

Knowledge Graph aims to change the way you search (again). If your search is easily recognized by Google, your device will display a results card, with all the pertinent information. Weather searches will display all types of weather info relative to you, rather than just search results. Contacts will come up with a contact card. You can also swipe the card away to view standardized results.

Camera Gestures

More gestures are also coming, with pinch to zoom, left swipe for camera roll, pinch in to expand gallery, and more.

Auto-Resizing Home Screen Widgets

Who hasn't wanted this?? Gone are the days of "no more room on the screen" notifications (unless your screen is actually full), and icons will auto-rearrange around it.

Google Nexus 7 is here, launching in mid-July

Ladies and gentlemen, the day is finally here when we see the first ever Google-branded tablet. Behold, the Google Nexus 7, an Android 4.1 tablet manufactured by ASUS. There's no doubt that in it Google and ASUS have just made the most perfect Android tablet, and it's beautiful as well. It will be launched with Android 4.1 along with the apps, games, books, magazines, and music from the amazing Google Play store.

Nexus 7 will be available in mid-July from the Google Play store for only $199, though it's currently available for pre-order. As a bonus, if you order now, you will get a $25 gift card to spend in the Play Store. It makes the Google Nexus 7 the cheapest and yet most powerful tablet available in Android sphere. Have a look at the main specs:

  • 7-inch 1280 x 800 HD display
  • Tegra 3 quad-core 4-PLUS-1 processor
  • 12 core GPU
  • Front facing camera
  • 9 hours of of continuous video playback

There's no rear camera in the Nexus 7, so maybe Google thinks that taking pictures from a tablet is appropriate and awkward. A quick review of Android 4.0.4 ICS on the Droid RAZR MAXX

Android 4.0.4 is finally rolling out to the Verizon Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX, and we got our hands on it. The update will make these 2 popular Droid phones up to date, at least until we see the next version of Android released at Google I/O.

First things first, the lockscreen has been revamped to reflect the ICS lockscreen, which gives you multiple apps to unlock to: phone, text, and camera. Once unlocked, you'll notice a surprisingly stock Android ICS experience, with what we see as minimal intervention from Motorola's UI overlay. The app menu is stock ICS and not Motoblur, meaning you get your sideways-scrolling list of apps, followed by a section completely dedicated to widgets. If you want to bring said widgets to one of your 5 customizable homescreens, simply tap and hold, and drag to your desired page. We also get the often-desired, rarely used (for this editor) face unlock, along with a new browser (stock for ICS) with all the standard options.

This update, I'm sure, will prove to be great for MAXX and RAZR users alike. Motoblur always had a tendancy to leave me feeling bogged down, and it looks like Motorola took the hint on this. The mostly-stock ICS experience makes the phone feel faster and like it's able to do more than it did previously.

[Video] Google I/O day one keynote now available on YouTube

Google hit a home run today in what was an absolutely sensational day one of the annual I/O conference. Just in case you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past 24 hours, Google introduced us to Android Jelly Bean, the Nexus 7 tablet and the Nexus Q media streaming device amongst other things. If that doesn’t whet your appetite then perhaps a live video stream of a sky dive into the conference centre will. (seriously!)

It really has to be seen to be believed so why not get comfy for the next hour and take a look for yourself.

Google Earth for Android Updated, 3D Maps Available for Some Cities

Just a quick heads up, Google Earth for Android has been updated with some 3D cities that Google showed us a couple weeks ago.  San Francisco is in there for sure, and it looks fantastic.  The new 3D cities aren’t listed, so you’ll have to find them on your own.

The update is available now, so go grab it.

Update: According to Google Earth Blog, the cities are: “Boulder, Boston, Charlotte, Lawrence, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Portland, San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Cruz and Tampa in the United States, along with Rome, Italy.”

Sony Xperia S ICS update issues acknowledged by Sony Mobile

Last week Sony Mobile announced they were rolling out updates to their Experia S line of smartphones so users would be upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich. Once the upgrade process started rolling out several people began reporting problems. Sony acknowledged these initial issues with the Android 4.0.4 ICS updates and commenced working to address them. They asked users to "stay calm" pending additional information.

On the Talk Sony forums, Sony now reports all updates will be "re-released." Users can continue to check periodically to see whether their phone recognizes the new update as being available or wait for Sony to issue a new announcement regarding the re-released updates.

Although it is unfortunate that Sony is experiencing these problems rolling out the ICS update, it is good to see them keeping communication channels open and updating their users on progress towards a resolution.

Google Finally Gives up Some Details on Project Glass

Google finally gave up some details on Project Glass at Google I/O today.  We’ve known about the futuristic eyewear for a while now, but now we’ve got some details about the hardware, and how Google envisions it fitting into our lives.  

While the device still seems to be under heavy development, Here’s what we know about the hardware:

  • A small display above the field of vision
  • Camera, Processor, storage
  • microphone, small speaker, gyro, compass, and accelerometers
  • lightweight design (less than some sunglasses)

In addition to the hardware, Google made a huge deal of highlighting the ways the device will be used.  The presentation included skydivers, cyclists and rappellers all wearing the glasses while streaming live into a Google+ Hangout. Obviously this isn’t the most likely use case, but they did show people using the device pretty seamlessly in their everyday lives.

We’ll have video later, but for now know that Google is heavily involved in developing this concept into a consumer device.

Developers can pre-order the device for delivery next year at a cost of $1500, but only I/O attendees need apply.

Google+ Events launches for all your party and event planning

Google unveiled Google+ Events for party and event planning. It will be part of Google+ and it will integrate with the calendar. You can even invite people who aren’t on Google+. All people invited will be able to see who’s invited and who’s going, but what about during the event? There’s going to be a party mode in which photos can be saved right to the party/event page. Users will be prompted at the start of the party to turn on party mode and share photos, and users can decide whether or not to share photos. Hit the break for some videos of it in action.

Nexus Q Announced at Google I/O

We’ve been hearing about a mysterious Google hardware device for months now, mostly due to leaks at the good old FCC.  Now we know what it’s all been about.  Google announced the Nexus Q, a consumer media device that stands apart from all the rest for a lot of reasons.  The device represents the first consumer device designed and built by Google.

The device (seen above thanks to our guys on the ground at Google I/O) streams media from the Google Play Store, including music, movies, tv shows and YouTube videos. It can be controlled by an Android phone but streams the data straight from the cloud.  Other users can add music from their own libraries to the queue for some tune-sharing good times.

The hardware itself features a internal 25 watt amplifier and an OMAP 4460 processor, the same one found in the galaxy Nexus.

As far as connections, it has optical digital and micro-hdmi outputs as well as Ethernet, dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC and a micro-USB port as well.

The device is available for pre-order today and is shipping in July for $299

Google+ For Tablets Announced At Google I/O

In the midst of all the hoopla surrounding Android 4.1 (aka Jelly Bean) and the very sexy Nexus 7 tablet is Google’s subtle, yet major announcement of a tablet-specific version of Google+ currently en route to tablets worldwide. There are no additional details yet, but we’ll be sure to keep you all posted with this developing story…

Google announces the Nexus 7 tablet with Jelly Bean, Built and optimized for the Play Store

The Nexus 7 is official folks. It has a 7-inch (1280 x 800) display, a NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core CPU, a 12 core GPU, front facing camera (assuming 1.2MP), 9 hour battery while watching HD video, Bluetooth, WiFI, NFC, and of course it will come with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. It weighs 340 grams, is 10.45mm thick, and as expected, it’s built by ASUS. It utilizes NVIDIA's new low-cost KAI platform that we wrote about previously.

The home screen shows all your content like magazines, and of course you can open any magazine or book and continue where you left off. Within magazine titles, you can look at just the text, but you can also view the pages as they were supposed to with full pictures, and you will have the ability to swipe up or down to expand the text.

There is also a powerful recommendations engine for apps, books, movies, etc. You can set it up to give you recommendations for any category you want, and there is even a Shazam-like feature if you’re listening to a song to find out the name of the artist and song with a link to buy it in the store.

The Nexus will be the first device in which Chrome is the default Browser. YouTube, Gmail, Maps, and other Google apps have been optimized for the Nexus 7. For example in Maps you can get information about places before you go. You can even look inside certain restaurants as if you are right there. Google Currents has also been enhanced for the Nexus 7 by adding Google Translate to it so you can see any article in any supported language you want. Gaming is also going to be incredible on the Nexus 7 thanks to the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor.

The Nexus 7 is already available for pre-order for starting at $199 for the 8GB version and $249 for the 16GB version. You will also get a $2o credit to spend in the Google Play Store. Along with that you will get preloaded: Transformers Dark of the Moon movie, the Bourne Domination book, and issues of magazines like Popular Science, Food Network, and Conde Nast Traveler. Shipping is expected to be in mid-July.

Google Announces 1 Million Android Devices Are Activated Each Day, That’s Right… EACH DAY

It’s no secret Android has grown exponentially since the mighty G1 arrived years ago. Using Google I/O to set the biggest stage, Google has announced over 400 million Android devices have been activated and 1 million devices are being activated each day. This is a major step up from hundreds of thousands of devices per day that was announced merely months ago. This just shows that Android devices are not only adopted by all cultures worldwide, but is here to stay as a platform.
