The Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9-inch will be making its way into consumers hands come November 20th and we've got a hands-on demo with the device for you all to check out. Amazon beats Google to the punch, introduces Kindle FreeTime custom profiles Posted: 06 Sep 2012 03:39 PM PDT One standout item Amazon introduced today was what they are now calling Kindle FreeTime. With Kindle FreeTime, you'll be able to go ahead and set up custom profiles for individual users making sharing your Kindle with family and friends a whole lot easier. Dubbed as a reinvention of parental controls here are some examples of Kindle FreeTime can be used: Restrict access to books, videos, apps and games. Restrict times allowed based on several options. Password protect each profile so that only allowed users can access. Password protect settings so that profiles cannot be overridden and taken over. Recently, there has been a lot of talk of Google having the frameworks built into Android 4.1 Jelly Bean that would allow such things as multiple user profiles but it's not complete as of yet, so in a way -- Amazon beat Google to the punch by allowing multiple users and custom settings for each one.

All new Kindle Fire versions will make use of ads on the lockscreen Posted: 06 Sep 2012 03:12 PM PDT With the Amazon event now mostly wrapped up and Amazon having setup all their preorder pages, some unannounced information about the devices has now come up. Unlike previous Kindle models, which offered a cheaper version for the inclusion of ads, Amazon has now decided that with the new Kindle Fire line it'll no longer be optional. Yes, all new versions of the Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD will have ads and sponsored screensavers built into them as now is noted on the Amazon website and there is no option to opt out of them. Beach Buggy Blitz for Tegra devices is totally tubular, man (and totally free) Posted: 06 Sep 2012 03:04 PM PDT If you're the proud owner of a Tegra device there's a great new game you have to try, Beach Buggy Blitz. The folks at Vector Unit (the same people who brought us Shine Runner and Riptide GP) have really outdone themselves with this one.  In Beach Buggy Blitz, you're tasked with driving from waypoint to waypoint, in an endless driving game. Along the way you'll find coins, which you can use to buy power ups and new equipment, all sorts of destructible scenery (carnage is fun), and a beautifully rendered environment. The effects, physics, and gameplay take full advantage of Nvidia's Tegra extensions, for one of the funnest driving games to ever hit Android. It's addictive, and it's harder than it looks. While you're power sliding around corners, and laying waste to crabs and tiki torches, the clock is ticking. If you can;t make it to the waypoint before the timer runs out, your game is done and you have to start all over again. Right now the game is for Tegra devices only, but Vector has plans to bring it to other devices "soon". If you're like me and bought a Tegra device to play great games, you just found one. Amazon Kindle Fire HD vs. iPad vs. Nexus 7 vs. Surface RT vs PlayBook Posted: 06 Sep 2012 02:39 PM PDT Alright, we've rounded up just about all of the specs on Amazon's new Kindle Fire HD tablets, now let's see how they size up against the competition: Apple's new iPad, the Google Nexus 7 by ASUS, Microsoft's upcoming Surface RT, and RIM's LTE BlackBerry PlayBook.  At the lower price points, only the Nexus 7 is really competing. We're still waiting on more information on RAM, but the new Kindle Fire HDs offer a lot more local storage further up the ladder. Verizon 4G LTE expands to over a dozen new locations Posted: 06 Sep 2012 02:17 PM PDT   Verizon has continued their crazy fast expansion of 4G LTE network coverage this week with over a dozen new markets or locations. More LTE markets can only be a good thing, especially if you're one of the millions who recently picked up a Samsung Galaxy SIII (S3) on Big Red. Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD coming to the UK for £129 and £159 Posted: 06 Sep 2012 01:32 PM PDT Amazon UK sends word that the new Kindle Fire (second-generation) and Kindle Fire HD (7-inch) will be launching in the UK soon. Importantly, Amazon's bringing both devices to the British isles at highly competitive price points -- £129 for the basic Kindle Fire, and £159 for the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD (the 8.9-inch versions were not mentioned in today's press release). The move represents Amazon's first foray into the UK tablet space, as the original Kindle Fire was never released in the country. The £159 price point puts the 16GB Fire HD in direct competition with the 8GB Nexus 7, and Amazon's offering comes with a compelling content package, which crucially includes music, something lacking from Google Play in the UK. British Kindle Fire owners will also get one month of free access to Lovefilm, the European movie subscription service owned by Amazon, as well as a free month of Amazon Prime. Both devices are due to land in the UK on Oct. 25, and are available to pre-order today. Needless to say, the UK budget tablet market just got really interesting. And with Apple due to join the fray in mid-October, it looks like there'll be no shortage of competition for Google's Nexus 7 in the months ahead. Just like the 7-Inch version, the 8.9-Inch will come with 16GB of storage though you'll have to wait a little bit longer and empty your pockets a little bit more if you go that route. Amazon announces Kindle Fire HD 4G LTE with $50 per year data plan Posted: 06 Sep 2012 12:01 PM PDT At its Kindle event in Los Angeles, Amazon has just announced its high-end Kindle Fire HD 4G LTE tablet. Speaking at the event, Amazon's Jeff Bezos said that to sell a tablet at $499, Amazon would have to include "the ultimate tablet feature." The 8.9-inch, $499 Kindle Fire HD 4G LTE will come with 32GB of storage and a $49.99 per year data plan, including an allowance of 250MB per month, 20GB of cloud storage and $10 Amazon Appstore credit. Nothing's been mentioned just yet regarding how much it'll cost once you go over that small monthly allowance, but we're hoping there will be some option to top up a few extra gigabytes. Amazon didn't say specifically which network it was partnering with, but the 4G LTE logo displayed matched that of AT&T. Amazon was keen to promote the advantage of its setup versus the Apple competition, highlighting the savings involved in an integrated data plan. Bezos summed up the company's bullish attitude, simply saying "we have just built the best tablet at any price." The Kindle Fire HD with 4G LTE is available to pre-order today, and will ship on Nov. 20 alongside the Wifi-only version. read more

Amazon Kindle Fire HD 7-inch available September 14th for $199 Posted: 06 Sep 2012 11:59 AM PDT With the all around announcement of the new Kindle Fire HD, Amazon managed to differentiate the product line much like their other Kindle offerings announcing that the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 7-inch will be available as of September 14th. For those concerned about pricing, the updated Kindle Fire will come in at a very reasonable $199. One difference here though over the 8.9-Inch is that the 7-Inch only comes with a screen resolution of 1280x800. read more

Amazon hails improved MIMO Wifi on Kindle Fire HD Posted: 06 Sep 2012 11:33 AM PDT We're live at Amazon's Kindle event in Los Angeles, where the company's showing off a range of new products, including the Kindle Fire HD tablet. Amazon's Jeff Bezos has been walking through the main features of the new tablets, and one stand-out for the Kindle Fire HD is its MIMO (Multi-In, Multi-Out) Wifi connectivity. Using multiple antennae, Bezos says Amazon's new flagship tablet boasts Wifi that's 54% faster than the Nexus 7, and 41% faster than the new iPad. The Fire HD also includes support for less-crowded 5GHz Wifi bands, unlike the Nexus 7. Positioning the Kindle Fire HD as a high-definition multimedia consumption device, Bezos says "if you're going to have HD content, this is important," and a Amazon displayed a chart showing their new tablet pulling 31Mbps over Wifi compared to the Nexus 7's 20 and the iPad's 22. Bezos claims the Kindle Fire HD is the world's first tablet with MIMO support. In addition to faster throughput, having more than one antenna should eliminate the "death grip" issues seen in some devices, where gripping near the antenna reduces signal strength. Amazon introduces Kindle Paperwhite with new high-contrast display Posted: 06 Sep 2012 11:01 AM PDT Today Amazon announced the Kindle Paperwhite, a $119 e-reader that's shipping October 1st, with preorders available today. A version with 3G will also be available for $179. The big seller here is the new high-contrast touch-sensitive display; whites are whiter, blacks are blacker. The thing can even get 8 weeks of battery life with the light on. Wowzers. Three's also this cool feature called X-Ray which lets you keep track of characters in novels. Handy for those particularly complicated books, eh? The announcement is ongoing, but based on this shot of a demo, it's looking like the device runs Android.  Still waiting on confirmation... In the meantime, follow our liveblog! Even if this one doesn't end up running Android, Paperwhite is likely to find its way into an Android device from Amazon at some point. It's got something they're calling a "nanoimprrinted light guide" to help figure out just exactly how much light to emit given ambient conditions.

Vodafone announces Vodafone Red with unlimited calls and texts Posted: 06 Sep 2012 09:32 AM PDT Vodafone UK is to launch a new range of service plans aimed at heavy users, dubbed Vodafone Red. The new plans, which start at £29 per month, offer unlimited calls and texts and between 1GB and 2GB of data. Vodafone Red plans come into effect from tomorrow, Sept. 7, and will be available across Voda's range of smartphones. At the entry-level, £29 per month will get you something like a Huawei Ascend G300, while those looking to take advantage of the Red plan and score a high-performance handset at the same time will be looking at up to £47 per month. Voda's new plans represent a move in the opposite direction to competing networks T-Mobile and Three. Both rivals offer unlimited data around this price point, along with finite, though large, allowances of calls and data. It'll be interesting to see whether Brits are still interested in call-focused price plans, as subscribers are increasingly turning towards heavier mobile data usage. HootSuite swoops in and acquires Seesmic Posted: 06 Sep 2012 07:01 AM PDT After a good, long run on Android, Seesmic has been acquired by HootSuite. Seesmic users don't have to worry too much, as HootSuite has promised that they'll continuing supporting the app, though business users will get moved over to HootSuite's offering. Both CEOs sound pretty amicable about how the whole thing worked out. "I have always had a lot of respect for Seesmic’s CEO, Loïc Le Meur and the role Seesmic has played in advancing social business." said HootSuite CEO, Ryan Holmes. “We are thrilled to welcome Seesmic’s users into the HootSuite family.”   "We’ve always been big fans of Ryan Holmes and the HootSuite team, since the days we were all pioneering the Social Media landscape. We’re thrilled today to announce that Seesmic is joining HootSuite, and we’re excited for our users: they are becoming part of the HootSuite family, and they will be able to continue to build their brand and social business," said Seesmic CEO Loic Le Meur. Both companies are big in the social media management scene, and their products have been just as great for everyday consumers as for pros. Although Twitter is the main focus, HootSuite offers tools for Facebook, LinkedIn, Foursquare, and a few other networks too.  I haven't touched Seesmic in awhile since I generally stick with HootSuite or the native Twitter and Facebook apps, but what do you guys use? Sony Xperia Tablet S now shipping in the UK, yours for £329 Posted: 06 Sep 2012 05:20 AM PDT Sony’s new Xperia Tablet S, announced last week at IFA 2012 in Berlin, is now available to buy in the UK. The second-generation Sony tablet, which is the first to bear the company’s Xperia branding, includes an NVIDIA Tegra 3 CPU, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and a substantial helping of Sony multimedia goodies. It also evolves the unconventional “folded magazine” chassis design introduced in last year’s Sony Tablet S. The 16GB and 32GB Wifi-only Xperia Tablet S models are now available to buy from Sony UK’s online store, priced £329 and £379 respectively. The 16GB Wifi and 3G version remains up for pre-order with a £429 price tag. At £329, Sony’s 2012 tablet is a little more tempting than its predecessor was last year, and importantly, it’s undercutting Apple’s third-gen iPad by around £70. Given the Xperia tablet’s lower-resolution screen and the fact that Android still hasn’t caught up with iOS’s tablet app ecosystem, the device may be a tough sell even at this price. Nevertheless, as an electronics giant with global reach, Sony is in as good a position as any OEM to make this kind of device work. The Taiwanese smartphone maker’s unaudited revenues for August 2012 were NT$24 billion ($800 million), down from NT$25 billion in July. The number represents a fall of 47 percent compared to the August 2011, when a hugely successful HTC was enjoying record sales. It’s no secret that 2012 hasn’t been kind to HTC thus far. As well as falling revenues, the company has been forced to withdraw from certain territories where it’s had difficulty competing with rival Samsung -- notably the latter’s native South Korea. In addition, HTC sold back half of its stake in audio firm Beats, and wrote off a $40 million investment in troubled cloud gaming provider OnLive. With new Android and Windows Phone 8 products likely to arrive imminently, HTC will be hoping that a new round of devices in late 2012 will help to reverse its fortunes. However it, like all other OEMs, will face fierce competition from Apple, which will be launching its next iPhone around the same time. Source: HTC

Samsung sells 20 million Galaxy S3 phones in first 100 days Posted: 06 Sep 2012 02:08 AM PDT It's been just one hundred days since the Samsung Galaxy S3 made its international debut in London, but already 20 million of the handsets have been sold worldwide, according to the manufacturer. In its official blog post today, Samsung notes that the S3 passed this milestone around three times as fast as last year's Galaxy S2, no doubt helped along by a streamlined U.S. launch and an aggressive marketing campaign. The S2, another big seller for the Korean manufacturer, took some ten months to reach the 20 million milestone. Today's announcement also shows that sales of the device remain strong. It took Samsung 50 days to sell its first 10 million S3 phones, and the company says they're selling at a rate of around 200,000 per day. As we rapidly approach the final quarter of the year, there's little doubt that the Galaxy S3 will emerge as the best-selling Android handset of the year. However, it's biggest test will come in a couple of weeks, when it's pitted against Apple's next iPhone. Update: We've got Samsung's press release after the break. Sony’s Xperia Tablet S now shipping in the UK Posted: 06 Sep 2012 04:22 PM PDT Sony unveiled its revamped Tablet S last week at IFA 2012, and announced that the device would be available beginning September 7th. The manufacturer has kept its promise, as the newspaper inspired tablet is now officially available to purchase in the UK. Currently, Sony’s official website has two different models that are listed as ready to ship. Customers can select either the 16GB version for £329 ($524), or the 32GB model for £379 ($603). Keep in mind both of these models are Wi-Fi only, with the 3G-enabled 16GB version still up for pre-order for £429 ($683). Additionally, the Tablet S is expected to begin making its way to other regions over the course of the next few weeks. Adobe Photoshop Touch Update Brings Support for Larger Images Posted: 06 Sep 2012 03:44 PM PDT For Android users that like to use Photoshop on the go, life just got a little bit easier. Adobe updated it’s Photoshop Touch app, one of the better photo editing apps in the Play Store. The latest update brings a few new languages, new effects and general bug fixes. The biggest addition has to be the ability to edit higher resolution pictures, which was a major criticism in our review of the app back in March. Now you can edit images up to 12 megapixels on your Android tablet while keeping the integrity of the image. This was a limiting feature in the past and the update allows for a more full Photoshop experience. Finally, they added Russian and Brazilian Portuguese as new languages. When you consider the updates, plus the new scrolling fixes and ability to toggle between different views of the image, the $10 Photoshop Touch app is an even better investment than before. Featured Play Store Review: Hands on with Beach Buggy Blitz [Racing] Posted: 06 Sep 2012 03:30 PM PDT For those of you that own a Nexus 7 or any other Android device with a Tegra CPU, we have another great game for you. This one just came out today and it’s called Beach Buggy Blitz by Vector Unit. If you’re not familiar with Vector Unit, they are the ones who brought us Riptide GP and Shine Runner. From the name, it’s obvious that it’s about racing and the beach. This racer is what we call an “infinite racer.” This means you won’t find a bunch of different tracks. You simply race and explore until your time is up. The longer you race the more you see and the cooler it gets. There are a number of caves, volcanoes, jumps, and temples. As to obstacles, you won’t find a shortage here. You will have to deal with Tiki statues, grass shacks, giant crabs, lava monsters, and even rolling boulders as a result of erupting volcanoes. To help you out, you can race through coins (as in collect them) to use for upgrades such as better vehicles, drivers, and power-ups. For those of you that don’t like to spend money, you can eventually unlock everything the game has to offer without spending a dime, but if you want to speed things up (no pun intended) you can spend a few bucks. If you like racing games, you will love Beach Buggy Blitz. The graphics and gameplay are great and it’s very addicting. They added enough features and made it simple enough to satisfy everyone. For controls, you can use motion, touch, or even a game controller for the full console effect. As to the game, since there aren’t a bunch of tracks to learn, the casual gamer can have a blast. Hardcores will still find it fun because there is still so much to explore, but it won’t be as daunting to casual gamers. Beach Buggy Blitz is only available for Tegra devices and those of you that have a Tegra 3 device will enjoy extra special effects like motion blur, lens splash, dynamic headlights in caves, and real-time rendered car shadows. Kobo to release Arc 7″ tablet featuring Ice Cream Sandwich and Tapestries Posted: 06 Sep 2012 02:33 PM PDT Even though Kobo’s last attempt in the 7″ tablet market didn’t go so well, it isn’t stopping them from going after that two-headed monster – the Nexus 7 and the new Kindle Fire. Last November Kobo released the Vox tablet to very little fanfare and while it wasn’t a terrible tablet, it just didn’t offer anything special to separate it from the Kindle Fire or Nook. Well this year is a new year, so maybe they’ll have better luck this year beginning with a name change from Vox to Arc. The Arc, which is due to arrive in November in 8GB ($199.99) and 16GB ($249.99) versions will be somewhat comparable to the Nexus 7 in some aspects. The Arc 7″ tablet will run on Android 4.0 and sport a 1280 x 800 display. It’ll also come with a front-facing camera and 1GB of RAM, however it will not have 3G capability or GPS. Additionally, the tablet will not have its own app store, but it will provide access to the Google Play Store. While none of these features are particularly cutting edge, Kobo is hanging its hat on one exclusive selling point in what they’re calling “Tapestries.” This feature builds a library of recommended apps, books, and games based on your habits. We’ve obviously seen features like this before on other products as well as third-party apps so we’ll have to wait for a hands-on before any further judgment is passed. Although, the first impression is that it’s not providing anything too revolutionary here. We aren’t quite sure where this tablet will fit into the hot 7″ tablet market. With the Nexus 7 coming out of the gates strong and the announcement of a cheaper new Kindle Fire today, it’ll be tough sledding for Kobo and their Arc to get a foothold in this market. However, we will find out for sure come November. Amazon announces 7-inch and 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HDs, along with an updated Kindle Fire Posted: 06 Sep 2012 01:19 PM PDT Amazon hyped their press event for today and had Internet sites abuzz with expectation leading up to it, with everyone guessing what they may reveal. It appears Amazon did not disappoint with the introduction of new devices sure to have a major impact on the world of tablet devices. The highlight will almost certainly be Amazon's introduction of an 8.9-inch version of their tablet, dubbed the Kindle Fire HD. Running at 1920×1200 resolution with 254 ppi, the 8.9-inch screen is made with a new laminated touch sensor that Amazon promises will reduce glare by 25%. Backing the display is a TI OMAP 4470 processor, 16GB of internal storage, Dolby stereo with dual speakers, dual wifi antennas, a front-facing HD camera, and HDMI out. This top of the line version of the Kindle Fire HD will run $299 and Amazon says it will be available starting November 20th, just in time for Black Friday's shopping rush. Amazon will also have a 4G LTE model available for $499 and a $49.99 per year data plan. There will be a data cap of 250MB per month and 20GB of cloud storage available. Joining the Kindle Fire HD are a pair of 7-inch models, an Amazon Kindle Fire HD 7 and an updated Amazon Kindle Fire. The Kindle Fire HD 7 is very similar to the 8.9-inch version, with the only difference being the screen. The Kindle Fire HD 7 will run an IPS screen at 1280 x 800 resolution. With a price of $199, it is available for pre-order starting today with shipment scheduled  for September 14th. The final tablet to join the Amazon stable is an upgraded version of the existing Kindle Fire. Still a 7-inch tablet, Amazon indicates the processor is 40% faster than the current model, it will have double the available RAM of the current Kindle Fire, and enjoy longer battery life. Amazon is actually cutting the price on this unit to only $159. It too will start shipping on September 14th. Along with the new hardware, Amazon announced some interesting changes to the operating system and available apps on their Kindle Fire devices. Whispersync Voice will let users transition between audiobooks and regular text without losing your place, a feature Amazon is calling "Immersion Reading." Whispersync is also spreading to games which means users' progress, achievements, awards and other checkpoints in a game will be uploaded to the cloud and available on all devices. A new feature called X-Ray will let users pull up actor information from IMDB while watching movies or information about books while they are being read. Amazon has also implemented a new e-mail app with support for Exchange, Gmail, Hotmail, and Yahoo accounts, including calendar and contact sync capabilities. Skype will be preinstalled on the Kindle Fire devices as well. Finally, Amazon has created a new parental controls app called FreeTime that will enable parents to control time and content limits for their kids on a per profile basis. The new Kindle Fire is 40 percent faster and $40 cheaper Posted: 06 Sep 2012 12:24 PM PDT Amazon unveiled new tablets today and the first one was an updated version of the Kindle Fire. You can’t complain when the specs go north and at the same time the price goes south. The additional hardware includes a faster processor that makes it 40 percent faster, an extra 512MB of RAM (total 1GB), a bigger battery, and a front-facing camera. Other than that, it’s still a 7-inch display. The best part of all of it is that it’s priced at $159, $40 cheaper than last year’s model. Pre-orders will start soon and it will be available on September 14th. It continues to be a forked version of Android, but the market they are going after doesn’t care. Verizon Hints at Future “Google Experience Devices and Tablets” Posted: 06 Sep 2012 11:02 AM PDT A recently leaked Verizon memo may be giving us an indication of potentially future plans by the nation’s #1 wireless network. The memo talks about future devices such as the newly announced DROID RAZR M being preloaded with a suite of Amazon apps such as the Amazon Appstore marketplace and Audible. However, the memo does have a major notation: while most future devices will have the Amazon suite preloaded, the memo does specifically exclude all “Google Experience devices and tablets.” Since Google Experience devices are generally Nexus devices, is this a sign that Verizon is expecting at least one Nexus model this fall? Of course Verizon may not have any future Nexus devices planned and just want to cover themselves in case an opportunity comes up later. Though if you remember back a few months to rumors of 5 different nexus devices being released this fall, maybe one of them will be a 4G LTE Nexus. This is all speculation right now, but Verizon would not have specified this if they did not believe it was at the very least a reasonable possibility. Eggbones releases Blind Ninja:Sing to Google Play Posted: 06 Sep 2012 09:31 AM PDT Fans of side-scrolling action games may want to check out a new title from Eggbones software – Blind Ninja: Sing. In the game, users guide their Ninja, Sing, across roofs, avoid falling houses, and slash their way through scarecrow enemies. The game features accelerated gameplay  for both the player and the enemies the longer and farther you guide Sing. Along with the faster speeds, as enemies are killed, Sing gains new combo moves. Do note that the permissions are rather extensive, though it is not clear why. Eggbones may possibly be planning some social media integration for the future. Motorola Confirms Most 2011 Phones Will Get Jelly Bean Update, Those That Don’t Will Be Eligible For $100 Credit Towards Upgrades Posted: 06 Sep 2012 07:03 AM PDT   In the midst of Motorola announcing the newest additions to the DROID RAZR family yesterday, it also announced a few important pieces of information for owners of its devices released in 2011. First thing’s first— most owners of the devices launched in 2011 will get the coveted Jelly Bean update, which follows MOTO’s previous pledge to keep its existing devices as up to date as possible. This means that many of you owners will have a slight glimmer of hope and a reason to possibly keep those Atrix 4G, Atrix 2, DROID Bionic and DROID RAZR smartphones. Again, we’re seeing a very heavy influence from Google, as MOTO’s announcement is nearly identical to what Google does for its Nexus line of smartphones. Of course not every 2011 phone will cooperate with Jelly Bean, so MOTO has you covered as well. If it decides that your 2011 device will perform at an unacceptable level with newer software and decides not to upgrade to Jelly Bean, MOTO will offer a $100 trade-in credit for you to use towards a new device. Before you ask— the credit is only good towards new Motorola devices, so you can’t pull a fast one and try to score that HTC or Samsung phone you’ve been itching for. Such is life we suppose. Finally MOTO is taking a page out of Samsung’s book and will begin to release developer editions of its devices, in case you have a carrier that isn’t too keen on customers fiddling with its devices.
