Cut the Rope: Time Travel coming soon from ZeptoLab Posted: 11 Apr 2013 04:00 PM PDT ZeptoLab announces the first new Cut the Rope series game in two years -- Cut the Rope: Time Travel Cut the Rope is an insanely popular mobile game on both iOS and Android, and it's first sequel Cut the Rope Experiments was just as popular. Today, ZeptoLab has announced a third in the series named Cut the Rope: Time Travel. We don't have much to go on yet. There's a trailer (find it after the break) but other than showing how adorable the little Om Nom character is, it leaves the rest to our imagination. We expect more of the same physics puzzles that help get candy into the cuddly little fellows mouth, and we're fine with that. Why ruin a good thing? No word on any date or pricing, other than it will be launching for Android and iOS and that it is "almost here". We'll jump on it as soon as we see it, in the meantime hit the break for that trailer. read more

Google helps plan your afterlife in the cloud Posted: 11 Apr 2013 02:32 PM PDT Inactive accounts can now have data shared with a person of your choosing, then deleted if you set things up beforehand The digital age is relatively new. It was only recently that folks started depending so heavily on electronic communications and services, which in turn saves -- at least in part -- your life in the cloud. Photographs of friends and loved ones, email correspondences, and school and work documents are all part of many people's digital footprints today. Google now has incorporated what they call the 'Inactive Account Manager' into Google services. After a user-defined timeout period that starts from your last sign-in, your Google account will be classified as inactive. Before the end of the timeout period is reached, Google will send you a text or email notification. If Google receives no response from you, contacts of your choosing can be notified after the timeout period that you are no longer using your account. There's even an option to share data with those contacts at this time. Any of the following can be shared: +1s, Blogger, Contacts and Circles, Drive, Gmail, Google+ Profiles, Pages and Streams, Picasa Web Albums, Google Voice and YouTube. A warning text and email will be sent before any data sharing occurs. The final step is account deletion after 3-12 months, which is completely optional. It's nice to see Google giving its users a tool to help plan for the unexpected. Whether you choose to simply delete your account or to share photos and documents with loved ones, this new tool has the potential to give a little extra peace of mind. The day the new Facebook Home application and the new HTC First smartphone arrive. Or, maybe it's just Friday. Dropbox update adds improved photo viewing, support for six languages Posted: 11 Apr 2013 11:27 AM PDT Every Dropbox photo can now be viewed in one place More improvements in the way of picture handling have been added to Dropbox for version 2.3.5. In a recent update we saw albums and photo sharing added to Dropbox; with the latest update, we now get a better way to view stored photos from within the app. All previously uploaded photos will now be displayed for easy viewing in the photos section of the picture tab. Localization also has been improved, with Dropbox learning six new languages: Indonesian, Malay, Polish, Russian, and Traditional and Simplified Chinese. The change log of v2.3.5 also boasts "tons of performance improvements." The update is live right now in the Play Store for Dropbox users. Hit the link above to install or update.

Samsung Galaxy Pocket Neo now coming to the UK Posted: 11 Apr 2013 10:37 AM PDT Available from Samsung and major operators Previously announced just over a week ago, Samsung has confirmed availability for the Galaxy Pocket Neo in the United KIngdom. Targeted at the entry level market, this phone will spare the specs in exchange for being easy on the wallet. Packing a 3-inch TFT screen, 850 MHz processor, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the Pocket Neo will be hitting the store shelves in mid-May. Look for this economically-friendly smartphone in the Samsung Experience Store at the Westfield Stratford City, as well as your favorite major operator. LG Optimus F7 reportedly headed to Boost Mobile Posted: 11 Apr 2013 08:23 AM PDT Prepaid carrier to launch LG's cheap and cheerful LTE handset, says @evleaks LG's Optimus F series is all about introducing low-cost, mid-range LTE-capable hardware to the market, and so a prepaid carrier like Boost Mobile seems a natural fit for the Optimus F7, the higher-specced device of the two. According to prolific Twitter leaker @evleaks and 9to5Google, that's exactly where the Optimus F7 will end up, alongside Boost's two existing LTE offerings, the HTC One SV and ZTE Force. In addition to the aforementioned LTE radios, the LG Optimus F7 packs a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, a 4.7-inch 720p display and an 8-megapixel camera, placing it squarely in the middle of the road when it comes to smartphone hardware specs. CyanogenMod 10.1 'M3' builds now available for some devices Posted: 11 Apr 2013 07:42 AM PDT Should be more stable than the latest nightlies The third batch of 'M snapshot' builds for CyanogenMod 10.1 are starting to roll off the servers today. The 'M' builds of the Android 4.2-based custom firmware are designed to be more stable than the regular nightly builds, while still allowing users to keep on top of the latest features and improvements. Right now CM 10.1 M3 builds are available for devices including the U.S. Galaxy S3, international HTC One X, various Galaxy Notes and Galaxy S2s and the current crop of Nexus devices. More are sure to follow in the hours and days ahead, so even if your phone or tablet isn't listed above, it's worth checking the CM download page for more info (or heading to the CM updater if you're using an earlier build). AT&T confirms Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket getting Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean Posted: 11 Apr 2013 06:54 AM PDT Update only available via KIES software, AT&T makes the update offical The Jelly Bean flavor of Android is hitting yet another phone today. (OK, this one's been available for a couple days now, but this morning AT&T made it official.) This time it's AT&T's Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket that's getting Android 4.1.2, some nine months after its Ice Cream Sandwich update. Sprint's Samsung Galaxy Victory gets its Jelly Bean update Posted: 11 Apr 2013 05:14 AM PDT An early Jelly Bean ROM leaked out for the Samsung Galaxy Victory 4G LTE about a month and a half ago, and today Sprint has made it official. Android 4.1.2 (that's a newer version than the leaked ROM) is headed out the door. The update's coming over the air, Sprint says (feel free to hop into the settings and see if it's available now). In addition to the Googleriffic features like Google Now and the Project Butter speed improvements, you'll also get the following new features: Swype Notifications now display full text of incoming SMS messages, and when you receive an MMS you can view full photo in the notification Pinch notifications to expand or collapse them Notifications from the same application are grouped together, and the first item is automatically expanded Conversational text-to-speech voice in U.S. English Voice typing without an Internet connection Manage/create Google+ Events from device Zagat ratings and reviews built into Google Maps™ Indoor walking directions integrated into Google Maps Source: Sprint

Google Map Maker finally hits the UK Posted: 11 Apr 2013 05:12 AM PDT Crowd-sourced mapping tool arrives on British shores Long absent from the country, Google's crowd-sourced mapping tool Google Map Maker has finally arrived in the UK today. The tool allow Brits to improve the mapping data provided through Google's web and mobile-based products by adding missing information, or bringing more detail to existing maps. Google's kicking things off with a MapUp event at the former WW2 code-breaking facility at Bletchley Park, adding more detail to road maps of the complex with buildings and paths. HTC and Wallpaper* release Global Design Tours app Posted: 11 Apr 2013 04:53 AM PDT Virtual tours of design events Milan, New York and Hong Kong HTC has released a new virtual tour app for Android in partnership with design magazine Wallpaper*.  The app launches today with tours of design events in Milan, to be followed by New York and Hong Kong next month. The initial Milan tour, from the Salone del Mobile home furnishing show, includes guides from Wallpaper* editor-at-large Henrietta Thompson, One & Co (HTC's design consultancy) principal Claude Zellweger and designer Christian Zuzunaga. Each one features 30-40 photos and an accompanying soundtrack. Bizarrely, though, the soundtrack isn't included, and here in the UK you're linked to each particular track on Amazon MP3. Same thing in the U.S. The app is said to be optimized for the new HTC One, though it should run just fine on just about any phone running Android 4.0 or above. It's basic, but well-designed (natch). Samsung Galaxy Mega specs Posted: 11 Apr 2013 03:21 AM PDT Full spec listings for the new 5.8- and 6.3-inch smartphones Samsung has just announced the Galaxy Mega series, two new mid-range Android phones with ridiculously large screens. The Galaxy Megas' hardware isn't exactly high-end, but they're nothing to sniff at either. In particular the 6.3-inch version boasts a HD screen and LTE connectivity, and a sleeker overall design. Samsung announces 5.8-inch and 6.3-inch Galaxy Mega smartphones Posted: 11 Apr 2013 02:55 AM PDT Android 4.2 and the latest Samsung software on new, larger-than-life devices After a couple of weeks of rumors, Samsung has today officially confirmed the Galaxy Mega series -- a line of big-screen smartphones aimed to straddle the space between the traditional phone and tablet markets. The official names, as rumored, are Galaxy Mega 5.8 and Galaxy Mega 6.3. Unlike the popular Galaxy Note series there's no Wacom-based 'S Pen' stylus included. But both Galaxy Mega devices include just about all the Samsung software features of newer Samsung phones like the Galaxy S4, due to the fact that they're running the latest version of the company's TouchWiz UI. That means new features like 'S Travel' and 'Story Album' come included out of the box, alongside the latest version of Google's mobile OS, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. A few other differences between the two Megas -- the Galaxy Mega 6.3 boasts LTE connectivity and a 1.7GHz dual-core CPU, while the 5.8-incher runs at 1.4GHz on HSPA+21. The 6.3 also has a higher-resolution screen -- "HD" (presumably 720p) according to today's press release -- as opposed to the 5.8's qHD (960x540). The 5.8-inch model offers a 2600mAh battery, as opposed to the 6.3's 3200mAh juicer. Both devices pack 1.5GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel rear camera and 1.9-megapixel front-facers. So it the 6.3-inch Galaxy Mega is definitely the higher-end of the two, and you can see that reflected in its design. With its minimal bezel and redesigned silver trim, it's the spitting image of the Galaxy S4, whereas the Mega 5.8 looks closer to the Galaxy S3. Today's news comes as Samsung faces increasing competition in the large-form-factor smartphone space, including 5-inch-plus devices from the likes of LG, ZTE and Huawei. T-Mobile gives 'best and final offer' for MetroPCS takeover Posted: 10 Apr 2013 09:33 PM PDT Better terms to hopefully lessen MetroPCS shareholder disapproval of the deal T-Mobile USA's parent company Deutsche Telekom has submitted its "best and final offer" to shareholders, sweetening the deal for the MetroPCS reverse takeover. Amidst the growing sentiment among MetroPCS shareholders that they're getting the bad end of the deal, T-Mobile is reducing the amount of debt transferred to the new company as part of the deal. The current terms are good enough for most, and see MetroPCS shareholders receiving $4 per share and a 26-percent stake in the newly combined company. The new deal will also now see a reduced amount of debt transferred to the new company, now at $3.8 billion -- along with a slightly lower interest rate. Although there is a vocal minority of shareholders disapproving of the current terms, they're still the minority. With T-Mobile previously stating that it felt its initial terms are fair, it's interesting to see it come back with a better offer to help guarantee the deal is accepted. MetroPCS shareholders are currently sending in their votes to approve or disapprove of the deal ahead of a shareholder meeting, which has been pushed back to April 24th because of the new terms. Pending that shareholder approval, all indications point to the deal going through at some time in 2013. Source: WSJ

LG Optimus G Pro 'value pack' features shown in new video Posted: 10 Apr 2013 08:39 PM PDT New camera features and eye recognition shown in official video Last month we talked about an upcoming software update for the LG Optimus G Pro, dubbed the "value pack". Corny name aside, it promised to deliver a few new features to the popular Korean handset. Tonight LG has pumped out a video showing off some of them. In the video (after the break) you'll find a nice walkthrough of LG's Smart Video eye recognition, the dual-camera video and still capture, and seamless pause and resume video recording. These features should go over well in LG's home market, where the Optimus G Pro is currently sold. LG hasn't giving any time frame for the update yet, We've checked our Optimus G Pro for updates, and nothing is here just yet. We'll have a deeper look at the features when it does arrive. Nexus 10 flip cover now available in Google Play Posted: 10 Apr 2013 05:04 PM PDT If you go back to our Nexus 10 review, you'll see where there's a removable strip along the rear that would make a perfect place to attach a cover of some sort. Today, Google finally put such a cover up for sale in Google Play. Available in scarlet or dark gray, the covers will fold over and protect the screen on your Nexus 10, and puts the device to sleep when closed. The Play store says these will ship and be delivered in three to five days, and they are a bit pricey at $30. But really, the screen on the Nexus 10 would likely cost so much to replace that this is cheap insurance to help prevent scratches and other mishaps. Google launches its Inactive Account Manager, aims to make your digital afterlife as peaceful as possible Posted: 11 Apr 2013 05:21 PM PDT   Death is certainly something that comes suddenly and without notice for us humans, making the management of items such as profiles and different accounts a nightmare to manage for loved ones. Fortunately, Google has thought about the tedious process that the masses will have to deal with, so it is trying to make things easier for us by implementing the Inactive Account Manager. Basically what it does is by accessing your Google Account settings, users can instruct Google on what to do with Gmail messages and data from other Google services if your account becomes inactive for any reason. Think of it like this— if you’re dead, then your account probably won’t be accessed after a certain number of months, so data from the different services can be deleted automatically or accessed by a secondary contact. Sweet. Motorola X Phone release date pushed back a few months Posted: 11 Apr 2013 03:25 PM PDT The last information we heard about the fabled X Phone’s release date had it pegged for  July. Unfortunately, that release date appears to have been pushed back to at least August, but it could possibly be even later before we see the device. The device is reportedly still in the early prototype phase, so it just wouldn’t be ready for a mid-summer release. Official Speedway GP 2013 brings motorcycle racing action to Google Play Posted: 11 Apr 2013 01:24 PM PDT Vivid Games S.A., developer of the Real Boxing title, released the official FIM Speedway GP 2013 game to the Google Play Store today. The new racing title promises console-quality graphics, lifelike physics, and improved controls. Players race against computer generated opponents, which are supposed to be smarter in this update for the 2013 season, modeled on real-life riders across 16 different real-world tracks. Along with traditional views, the new title adds a “Helmet Cam” that provides a first person point-of-view. Hit the break for some screen shots and short video highlighting game features. LG Optimus F7 Heading To Boost Mobile, LTE Onboard Posted: 11 Apr 2013 12:44 PM PDT The LG Optimus F7 was unveiled at Mobile World Congress, and will make its way to Boost Mobile. This new F-series of devices from LG feature mid-range performance and LTE connectivity. There are currently no details on pricing or when the Optimus F7 will arrive on Boost Mobile, but it’s said to be “soon”. CyanogenMod 10.1 M3 builds now available for a handful of devices Posted: 11 Apr 2013 11:33 AM PDT The CyanogenMod team has officially released some milestone builds for CM 10.1. Dubbed “M3″ builds, these should be a little more stable than the current batch of nightlies. As of right now, the Nexus devices, the US Galaxy S III, the international One X, and a few Galaxy Notes and Galaxy S IIs are the only devices receiving these builds today, but, like always, more devices are sure to follow in the next week or so. Be sure to keep an eye on the CM page for when your device gets added. It’s looking like Huawei has yet another flagship device in the works that looks like it’s going to possibly redefine the brand as we know it. A mysterious EDGE smartphone has been leaked that features a 4.9-inch 1,920 x 1,080 display, a quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, a 2,600mAh battery and a 13MP camera. Sure that sounds ho-hum compared to the competition but Huawei has managed to squeeze all those sexy specs into a 6.3mm profile and a sleek aluminum body. If you thought the original number of events and cars were a lot to handle originally, the new update bring even more delicious goodies by tossing in an additional 100 new events, as well as more cars as well. Oh and more importantly— gamers will have the ability to save their game’s progress on one device and continue it on another device, thanks to the ability to save a game’s progress to the cloud. Such high-capacity flash memory chips already exist in the marketplace, and the South Korean company is looking to not only bring smaller flash memory chips to mobile devices, but also replace traditional hard drives. These new flash memory chips are rated for 400Mbps throughput and according to Samsung, will be utilized in its high-capacity microSD cards, as well as solid-state drives with over 500 GB of storage. For consumers, this introduction of new flash memory chips means lower prices for current high-capacity, flash-based storage that is still out of reach for many. Starting April 12, the Optimus G Pro will receive a “Value Pack” upgrade which brings Smart Video, Dual Camera, and Pause & Resume. Smart Video utilizes eye-tracking technology and if a user is watching a video and looks away, the video will pause. Once the user looks back at the screen, the video will then start playing again. Dual Camera uses the front and rear-facing camera at the same time when taking photos. Pause & Resume is very similar to Vine functionality where you hold to record and release to stop recording, creating videos with very simple edits. Pantech working on new flagship device based on Snapdragon 600 Posted: 11 Apr 2013 07:56 AM PDT South Korean manufacturer Pantech is reportedly on the verge of releasing a new high-end device that will run on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core chip. The device will come with a 5-inch screen and a “bezel-less” design to help keep the overall device size down. The smartphone is model number IM-A870 and will be part of the Vega R Series of devices. According to sources, the device will support “giga Wi-Fi” at speeds equal to four times normal WiFi. The only other detail provided is that the device is expected to run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The new phone is Pantech’s attempt to compete with the Samsung Galaxy S 4.
