Sony Smartwatch 2 set for September 9 release Jul 16th 2013, 16:37, by Nate Swanner In less that two months' time, you could be wearing your brand new Sony Smartwatch. Reports out of the UK suggest that the retailer, Clove, has been prepped by Sony for a September 9 release. This was after Sony originally told Clove the date for release would be July 15, which has come and gone. If you're not familiar with the watch, it's a really sublime piece of kit on paper. Waterproof to 1 meter, a 1.6-inch screen, and 200 apps currently available. You can also take a call from the device, or take a picture! Some reports suggest you will be able to get 4 days use on one charge, so this really could be a daily driver, not a fascination for tech elitists. At right around $200, it's not a significant investment for many, but also not an impulse buy. The success or failure of this will depend on apps and interface. Sony says their interface for this watch is more like Android, which will make it familiar for a wider audience. Sony has been pretty wonderful as of late to support the developer community as well, and their smartwatch is no different. The Open Smartwatch initiative is another way Sony is openly embracing open source, and it could yield some great apps. If they can get this watch out on September 9 with a bevy of good apps, they'll be ahead of the game. Apple has hit a few snags with their iWatch, and Google is not giving any official word on their watch concept. Samsung is toying with the idea of a watch, also, but we're not holding our breath for that, either. The Sony watch looks to be a step up from the Pebble, so we'll be excited to see how it's received once in the hands of users.

IMDB app gets a new update, can now purchase movie tickets in the U.S. Jul 16th 2013, 16:06, by Brad Ward Alright movie fans, the IMDB app for Android and iOS has just been updated, bringing with it some convenient functionality! With ticketing powered by another popular movie app, Fandango, users can now purchase movie tickets from supported theater’s directly through the IMDB app. There’s also been some added Amazon integration, which, as The Next Web mentions, isn’t surprising since Amazon owns IMDB. There’s now a “buy” button you can tap, which will direct you to the product on the Amazon Mobile app, giving you the option to purchase the movie, if it’s available. Of course, you need to have the Amazon Mobile app downloaded for this to work, otherwise, it just opens your browser, and gives you a list of search results, using the name of the movie as the search term. This update brings a “watchlist” to the IMDB app, as well. Basically, you can add movies to your watchlist to track films that you want to see in the future. While it’s a really basic feature, it can definitely come in handy, especially if you’re out on vacation, find a movie you want to see, and don’t want to forget about it by the time you get back home. Aside from that, there isn’t much else you can expect to see in this update. There’s been a few performance enhancements, which makes scrolling more smooth and responsive, but that’s it. You can grab the IMDB update from the link below, or simply download it straight from your phone. The Play Store may be coming to Google Glass Jul 16th 2013, 16:11, by Nate Swanner Google Glass is still a bit locked down with development, and has its own portal for obtaining apps. While the Mirror API is available, the experience is still limited to those who are Glass Pioneers or Explorers. They can develop and make their apps available to Glass users worldwide, but not via the Play Store. The Play Store underwent an overhaul last night, and it may have implications for Glass users. It turns out at least one user has seen Glass show up on the list of possible devices you can load an app onto. I've gone ahead and tried to duplicate this, and wasn't successful. I'm also not in the Glass program, so it would seem as though the Play Store is checking your account for Glass ownership, even though the option is greyed out. The Play Store on Glass would be a strange experience, as it stands. It would be great to have the option to purchase apps and media via Glass, but navigating the Play Store on Glass would be impossible. Glass navigation is done by a series of cards and alerts, not scrolling over a web page. Users also don't have the ability to select things on a screen, as android or web users do. This could simply be a hint that once available, Glass apps will reside within the Play Store. It's smart to have as much in one area for commerce as possible, as Google already has a number of "app store" destination points that encompass many of their services, and it can be frustrating.

Huawei announces MediaPad 7 Youth, a 7-inch budget tablet with voice calling functionality Jul 16th 2013, 16:20, by Andrew Grush Back in June, Huawei announced its MediaPad 7 Vogue as a 7-inch tablet that combined voice calling, quad-core processing and a reasonably budget-friendly price tag. A month later and Huawei is back with yet another new tablet, the MediaPad 7 Youth. Like the Vogue, the Youth is a 7-inch 1080p tablet that allows its users to text and make phone calls. Where the tablet differs is in the specs, as the Youth trades the quad-core processor for an unspecified 1.6GHz dual-core CPU. Other specs include 4,100 mAh battery, Wi-Fi, HSPA+ and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Unfortunately Huawei has yet to reveal details for the camera(s) and internal storage. As for the size? The Youth is a bit thicker than the Vogue, coming in at 350 grams and measuring 9.9mm thick, versus the Vogue's 335 gram size and 9.5mm thickness. While the MediaPad 7 Youth isn't exactly thin and light, the good news is that it features a solid, aluminum metal unibody design. While it seems obvious that the MediaPad 7 Youth will come in at a cheaper price point then the beefier Vogue, we don't know exactly how much just yet. If we had to speculate, sub-$300 pricing certainly sounds doable, even factoring in its built-in cellular modem. According to Huawei, the tablet will arrive to Russia, Asia Pacific, China, the Middle East and Europe during the 3rd quarter of this year.
