Golden HTC One casing leaks, the bling factor is intense Sep 13th 2013, 17:21, by Dima Aryeh I’ve always been fascinated by phones like the Vertu devices. They were so high end, with gold plating and diamonds and leather, yet they were essentially dumb phones up until recently. And even now, the specs would make any techie chuckle to themselves and offer to melt it down to sell for scrap. We’ve also seen companies trick out normal phones, like the iPhone or HTC One, with real gold and diamonds. But a new trend is arising, and that’s to offer devices in a gold hue. No real gold, no astronomical pricing, just a nice champagne gold shade. Recently, Apple announced their champagne gold iPhone 5S, much to the delight of many. While I wouldn’t personally rock something so flashy, a lot of people want to. But what if you want to stick to Android, yet still own a golden phone? If these leaks prove real, HTC might be releasing a golden version of their HTC One. The One started as a very plain device only available in silver and black (still my two favorite colors). A while later, it was released in red for Sprint, and just recently, a blue version was released for Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon. With four colors under its belt, HTC is doing quite well. However, gold would be a wonderful edition to its lineup. Obviously, this color isn’t for everyone, but it will reach success. A lot of people seem to like it, and despite me calling it flashy, it’s almost classy in how dim it is. Would you use a champagne gold smartphone, or do you prefer real gold? Leave a comment!

Sony Xperia Z1 low-lighting shots look amazing Sep 13th 2013, 17:09, by Bogdan Petrovan Dual-toned flashes are nice, but in some situations you simply can't use a flash for your photography. And then there are users who outright refuse to use the flash on their mobile devices, arguing that the harsh LED light does more harm than good to the scene. That's why it's important to have a device that can take good shots even when the ambient light is less than ideal. The good news for Sony fans is that the camera of the new Xperia Z1 flagship (hands-on and first impressions here) seems one of the best performers in the market when it comes to low-lighting photography. Here's a gallery of photos taken with the Sony Xperia Z1 by the folks at UnleashThePhones. The shots were taken in Singapore at around 7:30pm to 9:30pm, using Sony's well-known Superior Auto mode, with no manual settings. Due to the use of the automatic mode, the images' size is 8MP in 16:9, though in manual mode you can set the resolution to 20.7MP in 4:3. Click to enlarge to 8MP. As you can see for yourself from these samples, Sony seems to have really nailed low-light photography with the Z1. Thanks to the large resolution, the firmware of the Xperia Z1 is able to combine information from several physical pixels into one pixel, thus offering images that are smaller, but also much better. Another trick in the Xperia Z1's arsenal is the Clear Zoom system, which makes it possible to take some decent images with digital zoom, as opposed to the blurry, noisy shots you typically get when using the digital zoom on other phones. Google’s Niantic Labs has released an update to its popular massively multiplayer mobile augmented reality game, Ingress. The new version brings about an Agent Achievement system which allows players to track skills and capabilities for their profile. Expected to roll out over the next few weeks, Ingress will introduce ten badges for tracking and earning.   Explorer – Indicates a player's visits and hacks of distinct portals. Pioneer – Tracks the capture of distinct Portals Liberator – Tracks the capture of all portals. Purifier – Signals the number of Enemy Resonators destroyed. Hacker – Indicates the number of portals hacked. Guardian – Measures the ability to maintain control of a portal for an extended period of time. Builder – Tracks Resonators deployed. Seer – Indicates new Portals discovered and successfully submitted. Connector – Signals the number of Portals linked. Mind Control – Recognizes the creation of Control Fields. The new achievement system not only provides players with the ability to track their own progress, but friends, in-games wins, and more. Straight Talk now offering AT&T LTE with supported phones Sep 13th 2013, 16:42, by Jerry Hildenbrand Straight Talk's $45 monthly "unlimited" plan gets even faster Straight Talk, the national MVNO who uses bits and pieces of all four major carriers networks to provide inexpensive pre-paid service across the US, now offers AT&T LTE on their bring-your-own-phone monthly plan. You'll need a compatible phone from AT&T and a 30 day $45 "unlimited" plan, and a new SIM card from the company, but after that you should be good to go -- there's no need to unlock your phone.  Before you rush out and sign up, it's worth noting that there are some drawbacks. As Andrew notes here, you'll not have any roaming and customer service isn't a priority, and Straight Talk's "unlimited" is a squirrelly thing. Hence the quotes. The biggest issue is how they define unlimited, which seems to vary from person to person. There is no hard cap, but the terms and conditions allow them to terminate or throttle your data at their discretion. For what it's worth, our very unscientific testing shows that in congested areas like Seattle (for instance) you'll get throttled around 2GB, where in places like West Virginia where there's less data traffic, things usually are closer to real unlimited. This will matter when you're burning through things at LTE speeds. Anyhoo, as long as you know what you're getting yourself into, LTE on Straight Talk may be a perfect fit for you. AT&T 4G LTE now available in 400 markets Sep 13th 2013, 15:54, by Robert Nelson Earlier today we learned that T-Mobile now has 4G LTE service available for more than 180 million people across 154 markets. And while that is a nice step up for T-Mobile (as compared to their previous status update), it also looks like AT&T has continued making progress towards their end-of-year goals. In fact, AT&T now has 4G LTE available in 400 markets. To that point, those 400 markets translate into having 4G LTE available for “nearly” 240 million people. Further details point towards AT&T having 4G LTE services available for 270 million people by the end of 2013. Looking forward into next year and we see comments from AT&T about how they expect the 4G LTE build to be “substantially complete by summer 2014.” Otherwise, AT&T also took this 400 market announcement as time to say that more than 35 percent of the postpaid subscribers are now using a 4G LTE capable device. Perhaps more important for the present time though, this 400 market announcement also came with word of new coverage. AT&T has rolled out coverage for those in Alexander City, Alabama; Concord, New Hampshire and Jamestown, New York. In addition, coverage has also been expanded for those in Fresno, San Francisco and Stockton, California; Washington DC; Springfield, Missouri; Columbus, Ohio; Nashville, Tennessee; Houston, Texas, Seattle and Tacoma, Washington and Charleston, West Virginia. In addition to new LTE coverage, AT&T has also been steadily rolling out new devices. The LG G2 recently arrived and we also learned the Metallic Blue HTC One will be available (for AT&T) by way of Best Buy on September 15. Aside from smartphones, AT&T recently released the ASUS MeMO Pad FHD LTE 10.0 tablet earlier in the month. At the time the handset was referred to as being a DROID ULTRA and that was later confirmed to be an Employee Edition model. Well, it looks like the handset has slipped into the wild with an option for non-employees to make a purchase. That being said, those heading to the Verizon Wireless website would still be greeted with an employee only message. Instead this model has recently begun showing up on auction sites. Namely eBay, and as one would expect — there is a big premium to pay if you want this limited edition DROID ULTRA with red-racing stripe. The prices all appear to be sitting well above the $500 mark and for that you would be getting a serial numbered handset that was intended to be used only be Verizon employees. Aside from the red-stripe on the back and the serial number, the handset will be the same in terms of specs. That is to say you will still be getting a handset with a 5-inch 1280 x 720 display, dual-core 1.7GHz processor and 10 megaixel “clear pixel” camera. Of course, the handset will be running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and also sporting the Kevlar casing. The DROID ULTRA was a handset that we spent a bit of time with shortly after the release. The video sitting above gives a look at the non-employee edition of the DROID ULTRA and those looking for more detail should make sure to check out the full review which included everything from talk of the processor to talk of the camera including image and video samples. All that being said, we do have to wonder which handset these employees have decided to stick with. After all, a frequent complaint seems to circle around battery life and as we have seen with the DROID ULTRA — this model is sporting a 2130 mAh battery that should be able to get most everyone through a full work day with little worry. This latest teaser mirrors what we have been seeing with the earlier videos. Basically, that is to say the video is short and offers little in terms of solid details. Then again, it does appear as if OPPO has shown the overall shape of the handset. The image sitting above is showing what could be the exterior lines of the handset. Otherwise, this video (which has arrived as trailer #4) has also offered a brief look a the manufacturing process. And this time around they provided an ever-so-brief look at the internals of the handset. As we mentioned yesterday with video number three, it appears as if OPPO has once again recent the countdown timer. They haven’t said how many episodes will be included in this series of teasers, but it is looking like the next video will be arriving in 3 days. Aside from the teasing, OPPO has previously said they will be announcing the N1 on September 23. In addition to the confirmation of the announcement date, OPPO has also confirmed a few details of the handset. Much of the rumors have focused on the camera, but we have yet to see much in the way of confirmation coming from OPPO on that subject. What they have said in regards to the camera was that it will be “amazing.” OPPO has confirmed the size of the display at 5.9-inches. And taking that a step further, rumors are suggesting that it will be a 1080p display.
