SIM-free prices are in the £550-560 range, so you'll certainly pay a premium for the Z1's high-end internals, which include a Snapdragon 800 quad-core CPU and 20.7-megapixel camera with Sony G lens. ASUS unveils new Padfone Infinity with updated internals and design Sep 17th 2013, 08:48, by Alex Dobie Snapdragon 800 CPU and new camera tricks among features of the 'new' ASUS Padfone Infinity Following on from its recent product line refresh at IFA, Taiwanese manufacturer ASUS has taken the wraps off a revamped dockable handset, in the form of the "new" Padfone Infinity. A refreshed version of the handset we first saw at Mobile World Congress, the new Padfone packs a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, microSD expandability and a tweaked industrial design, featuring a "diamond-cut" aluminum back. The tablet-dockable phone features the same 13-megapixel, f/2.0 camera as the original, but ASUS is introducing a new ability it's calling PixelMaster, which uses a pixel binning-like feature to produce a clearer 3-megapixel image from the 13-megapixel sensor. On the software side, the new Padfone Infinity runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and ASUS's latest UI, which we saw on its latest products in Berlin a couple of weeks ago. It's still pretty close to vanilla Android, but tweaks to the menus, notification shade and icons give it its own unique appearance without straying too far from Google's vision of Android. Engadget reports that the new Padfone Infinity will sell for the equivalent of $640 for the handset alone, while the tablet will run around $240. Got an old Padfone Infinity tablet dock? New ASUS PadFone Infinity unveiled, sporting Snapdragon 800 as expected Sep 17th 2013, 08:09, by Juan Carlos Torres The day has finally come and ASUS has announced its refresh of the PadFone Infinity which, probably to no one’s surprise, does indeed run on an upgraded processor. But ASUS has also thrown in a few additional features that would probably be of interest to those looking to nab of these smartphone/tablet hybrids. Just to get the basic specs out the way, the new PadFone Infinity’s processor was upgraded to a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 running at 2.2 GHz from its predecessor’s Snapdragon 600. The internal storage has been modified as well. Instead of the original 64 GB, the new PadFone infinity only has 16 GB and 32 GB configuration options. But worry not as ASUS has now added a microSD slot to make up for it. The rest of the hardware is practically the same, making the new version completely compatible with existing PadFone Infinity accessories such as the Infinity Station dock. More emphasis has been put on the PadFone Infinity’s cameras, a 13 megapixel F2.0 rear camera and a 2.0 megapixel front-facing camera. ASUS has introduced a new feature called PixelMaster that is able to increase the image quality by squeezing in pixels from 13 megapixel shot to a smaller, but higher quality 3 megapixel image. The camera is also capable of burst shots of up to 25 shots per second, but only when set to 3 megapixels. In regular mode, the speed is reduced to 8 shots per second. There has also been very noticeable changes in the software, especially with the look and feel of the user interface, to improve the visual aesthetic and consistency. It also comes with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean right out of the box. Unfortunately, for some reason, ASUS has decided to cut out the Garmin navigation software which came pre-installed in the previous PadFone generation. The new ASUS PadFone Infinity now comes in two color options: Titanium Black and Platinum White. No news of international availability yet but the device will be available in Taiwan from ASUS and carriers for a price of 18,990 NT$, or roughly $640, for the 16 GB version and 20,990 NT$, around $710, for the 32 GB model. The Infinity Station dock, on the other hand, is priced at 7,000 NT$, or $240. Google acquires file sharing app Bump Sep 16th 2013, 18:03, by Nate Swanner According to a blog post from CEO and cofounder of Bump, David Lieb, the company has been acquired by Google. Bump, which failed to catch onto a large audience, will join forces with Google, but no timetable for the merger was given. Bump allows your device to "feel" a bump, allowing for file sharing much like we enjoy with NFC. The difference is that it only requires a bump, and access to your location, not so much a back-to-back pairing. Files can be shared between mobile devices, or even a computer (which is why location sharing is so important). Google hasn't yet announced any plans for the functionality of Bump, but we wonder if it has to do with their strongly rumored smartwatch. Shake hands, exchange contact info or files — it sounds pretty sublime. Bump also has Flock, a group photo sharing app. Neither app reached a large audience, as other technologies stole the spotlight, but Lieb assured users both apps would continue to work as they always have. In an email, a Google spokesperson told us "The Bump team has demonstrated a strong ability to quickly build and develop products that users love, and we think they'll be a great fit at Google."
