Chrome gets Android screencast support, debugging features Oct 8th 2013, 23:23, by Nate Swanner In what looks to be an attempt to get developers thinking more mobile centric about their design, Google has introduced into Chrome a utility to allow for real-time alterations. As more and more users turn to their phones and tablets ahead of desktop or even laptop computers, the mobile website has increasing value for developers. From monetization to simple navigation, making it look right on mobile is crucial. Google's obsession with all things web-based is going even further with this new development for Chrome. In the latest beta build for the world leading browser, brave souls can test a utility which allows them to test their creations in real-time, via USB connection to a tablet or phone. The utility is available on all platforms Chrome supports: Mac, Windows, Linux, and Chrome OS. This was originally outed by Francois Beaufort, who is known for digging up interesting tidbits in the Chromium code. Via his Google+ post, Beaufort details exactly how to get it up and running. By activating a few flags in Chrome, anyone can begin casting and testing. The screencasting will allow users to view and alter, via Chrome, what's going on with their mobile device creations, as illustrated in the video below. A simple utility, this has far reaching implications. As Chrome Beta for Android recently gained the ability to save web pages to the home screen, this seems to be a continuation in Google's attempt to make the mobile web a more viable option for everyone, and it starts with developers. Android 4.4 KitKat Downloads UI leaks, reveals Holo Light theme Oct 9th 2013, 01:00, by Derek Ross Normally, when new Android versions are released to the world, Android fans such as ourselves don’t head to the Downloads app to look for any new goodies. However, when the Downloads app is about to undergo a complete graphical redesign, we pay attention. As we continue towards the next batch of Nexus devices and the inevitable Android 4.4. KitKat release, the pace for leaks has quickened. Let’s take a look at what we have this time around. New Holo Light theme instead of Holo Dark. A white, light theme matches other core Google apps and seems to fit quite nicely with other leaks depicting a whiter Android UI. The Downloads icon is now much cleaner and flatter. The action bar also includes two new icons. The icon with the three lines most likely contains sorting options for sorting by file size or by date.  The four square dots icon is most likely for changing the view from displaying files line by line, to a cards view, similar to how Google Drive currently looks and functions as shown below. Skype updated with a brand new tablet layout Oct 9th 2013, 00:56, by Andrew Martonik Fresh interface, improved video quality and several under-the-hood improvements Skype is rolling out an update today that is drastically improving the interface on larger tablet screens. Back in February Skype gave a tablet-optimized layout a try and quickly reversed its actions, and we're happy to say that this time around it seems to have done it the right way. Building on the completely remade Skype 4.0 update that was released for phones in June, the new interface focuses on conversations and people in a much-improved layout that is clearly designed for larger screens. Version 4.4 brings all of the upgrades in terms of performance that came to phones in version 4.0, and all devices that move to 4.4 will see improved video quality. Skype says that the maximum resolution in the latest version can be up to four times as high as before. A whole grouping of bugfixes are also included in the latest update, including big issues with incoming calls and reboots. read more

Samsung's WTF-worthy curved smartphone in full rendered glory Oct 8th 2013, 22:08, by Dustin Earley Both the Nexus S and the Galaxy Nexus could be considered curved Samsung smartphones, but they’ve both got nothing on the curved smartphone evleaks is saying is the real deal. Making its first appearance with nothing but the words “do not adjust your display” attached, evleaks’ has provided the world with a render rumored to be Samsung’s upcoming curved smartphone. Going by the model number SM-G910S, evleaks is calling the device “strictly a Korean curiosity, for now.” And you can probably see why. Where the Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus were curved for enhanced usability, to better rest against the natural curves of your face, the SM-G910S is a monster among freaks. The device is curved vertically, with the left and right edges folding up to form the smartphone equivalent of a half-pipe, taco shell, rolling paper, luge track. After looking at the renders, you have to wonder how Samsung plans to sell this thing. Perhaps in their home-country of Korea, simply being first to market with a curved smartphone will be enough, but we can’t imagine this thing catching on worldwide. Other than the curved display, it appears to feature LTE-Advanced, and borrows heavily from the design of the Note 3. Fake stitching and all. Just yesterday, PhoneArea cited asiae.co.kr as saying Samsung would release a device similar in specs to the Galaxy Note 3, in limited quanities in Korea, called the Galaxy Round. It’s starting to look like that report is spot on. We’ll keeping digging for more info on the SM-G910S, or the Galaxy Round, but until then, we’re dying to know what you think. Gallery
