Chromecast

The Chromecast could soon be available in other markets, as Google's Android and iOS application have been made available in non-U.S. markets.

So far, the gadget has been available solely in the USA – although Amazon did briefly sell it to international customers – but it would make plenty of sense to see Google expand Chromecast availability to other regions of the world.

Engadget reports that the official Chromecast apps (Android and iOS) can be installed in the UK and Canada.

Should we expect a Chromecast-related announcement from Google next week? A Google event that's related to Google Play is scheduled for October 24, and word on the street it's not about hardware. Is it possible though that the Chromecast will be part of it – will we see Google announce international availability for the device?

We can't answer that question just yet, but it's clear that Google has quite a few announcements planned for this fall, not limited to only the highly-anticipated Android 4.4 KitKat operating system and Nexus 5 smartphone.

International readers, have you purchased a Chromecast from the U.S.?Have you been able to install the Chromecast app(s) in any other countries than the U.S.?

Screen Recording feature coming to CyanogenMod (video demo)
Oct 21st 2013, 00:09, by Chris Smith

CyanogenMod developer Koushik "Koush" Dutta has demoed in a new video a new feature coming to the custom ROM: screen recording.

The app will let anyone interested in capturing on video the action on the screen of their Android smartphones and tablets as it happens. And there's support for audio as well, as you can see in the video above.

By simultaneously pressing volume up and the power button, users will be able to record the screen of their devices. As you can see in the demo video, they'll have the option of showing the movement of the finger on the display as well.

The status of the recording will be shown in the notification area, from where users will be able to stop it. That’s also where users will enable and disable the touch action.

The feature is certainly useful for anyone interested in showing off certain app features and/or bugs directly on the phone – therefore developers will certainly be interested in this one – but regular users will also be able to record their displays when using certain apps.

The app will be available in CyanogenMod "soon," but Koush did not specify when that will happen exactly.

In case you were wondering, this one will not be available as a standalone app for Android, so you'll have to run a CyanogenMod edition ROM on your device to enjoy the Screen Recording feature.

Hangouts for iOS

Google's Hangouts iOS app has been updated to offer VoIP voice calls via Google Voice, a feature that's not available on the Android Hangouts app yet.

The iOS Hangouts update brings voice call support to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users. On top of that, calls made in the U.S. and Canada are free of charge, with users being able to make and receive calls by using their Google Voice number. The same Google Voice rates apply for international calls, but that requires Google Voice credit.

The Verge notes that unlike using the Google Voice app, Hangouts uses data not voice minutes, according to what a Google representative had to say:

“If I type in a number, it sends data to Google and then Google actually calls the phone number,” said Google in a statement. “This is different from what Google Voice does today (it actually dials a random number). So you’re using data, not minutes from your carrier.“

Naturally, we expect the same feature to be available on Google's Android Hangouts app, maybe as soon as Android 4.4 KitKat is rolled out.

Recent rumors have suggested that Hangouts will soon receive SMS/MMS functionality, and we already know that KitKat will require users to select a default SMS application. Considering that Google has already updated the iOS app with voice calls support, it would make sense to see the feature come to Android users in a future update.

Commenting on the iOS update of the Hangouts application, Vic Gundotra hinted that Hangouts for Android will also be updated to make users happy:

Guys, don’t worry. We have massive investment in Android. I promise you will be happy soon. Don’t get upset because we show some love to Google users who use iOS. There are a lot of them. And they are good people :-)

We'll be back with more news about Google's Hangouts-related plans in the near future.

Yes, the Sony SmartWatch 2 is IP57 water and dust resistant

Sony SmartWatch 2

The Sony SmartWatch 2 doesn't mind a little dunk or three

There seems to be a little confusion out there among wearable enthusiasts and soon-to-be wearable enthusiasts about the Sony SmartWatch 2 and any level of water resistance. A representative of the company has assured me that the SW2 is indeed IP 57 rated for water and dust resistance. This is the same as the Xperia Z, and it means:

  • 5: Ingress of dust is not entirely prevented, but it must not enter in sufficient quantity to interfere with the satisfactory operation of the equipment.
  • 7: Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1 m of submersion).

That's all I needed to hear. Hit the break to see the Sony SmartWatch 2 meeting a glass of ice-cold West Virginia mountain spring water.

Cyanogen

The Cyanogen team announced at Big Android BBQ 2013 (BABBQ) that its CyanogeMod custom ROMs will be available in two versions in order for more users to be able to enjoy them.

Arguing that smartphone users and not carriers should dictate software-related terms to OEMs, the Cyanogen team revealed that it will offer support to both beginners and advanced Android users that want to install CyanogenMod on their devices.

The team said that there currently are 8,200,000 active CyanogenMod users, and that it has registered 38,000,000 downloads for over 100 devices, with over 3,000 contributors helping out with development.

CyanogenMod Community vs Pro

CyanogenMod will be available in two flavors including a Community Edition and a Pro Edition.

From the start, you should know that the Community Edition is the one you may be using today – therefore advanced and hardcore Android users will want to install this CyanogenMod ROM on their devices.

The Pro Edition – and the name is certainly confusing – is for beginners that don't want to / don't know how to install the CyanogenMod ROM on their handsets but could certainly use its features. The Pro name usually implies that such a software version would cost money or would offer features for pro users, but that's not what's happening with this ROM version. What the Pro version will do is to offer a hassle-free way to users curious to experiment with CyanogenMod, but not curious enough to go through all the necessary, and some times tedious, steps to get it.

Here are the features of each of these two CyanogenMod versions:

Community Edition

  • Designed for hackability
  • User debug
  • Signed with well-known keys
  • Root enabled by default
  • Community driven
  • Highly flexible system updater

Pro Edition

  • Designed for security
  • Signed with private keys
  • Simplified, automatic updater
  • Built on top of OSS project
  • Root is off, but easy to enable
  • New releases every two weeks

New CyanogenMod features

In addition to introducing these two new CyanogenMod ROM versions, the team also talked about upcoming features for CM Account and CyanogenMod.

The CM Account will offer users the possibility of finding and remotely wiping their handsets, but also give them full device management powers, backups, cross device sync and secure storage.

cyanogenmod-recent-conversations-1

The CyanogenMod ROM will get new features including:

  • Universal screencasting – Remote display framework, based on Koush's work on the Chromecast/AirPlay/Wi-Fi display work
  • Live Folders – the folders would populate themselves based on "smart context" (image aboev)
  • Recent Conversations – a feature based on Live Folders that will allow users to be automatically directed to the last conversation app used when looking to connect with a certain contact.
  • Themes, everywhere.
  • Gallery++
  • Launcher++

CM Edition of Oppo N1

The Oppo N1 will be the first Android handset that will ship with a pre-installed version of CyanogenMod, and according to the presentation (see Source links below) the phone is coming in late November.

Amazon review points to lifting of Nexus 5 embargo on October 25, seems fake

amazon review nexus 5 case

Considering the Moto X was also in the hands of a lot of people prior to it’s release, all of who could not write about it until Motorola gave the go-ahead, it could be the case once again with such a route.

Is the reviewer to be trusted? I’m not certain. She is a “Top 100 reviewer” on Amazon, as has been stated on the Reddit thread, but most of her reviews are for books. She must be quite a prolific reader, too, with a review almost every day. The “Top 100 reviewer” status on Amazon itself is flawed, as this article points out.

I haven’t been able to trace her further than the Blogger link mentioned on her profile, so it still isn’t quite clear to me why she was deemed worthy of getting a Nexus 5 prior to its release (unless Google plans to offer the phone on Amazon, and wants reviews from a few Top 100 reviewers, which I just don’t think would be the case). Also, I don’t think people under embargo typically don’t go out of their way to publicly announce they are under embargo.

Anyway, if you do want to order the case, which as you can see, she clearly rates very highly, you can at this link. It ships October 31st, so you would probably have the whole of November to return the case if Google still doesn’t release the device. There are a few colors on offer, too.
