To help businesses, Google introduces Google Maps Engine Pro and companion Android app Oct 22nd 2013, 01:58, by Jeff Causey In case you haven’t noticed, Google has been slowly but surely reworking its Maps products into something that both Google and businesses can better monetize. Today Google announced another step in that process will the release of what they describe as a “professional mapping tool,” Google Maps Engine Pro. The primary piece of this new service is the ability to import data from a variety of sources and geolocate that data on a map. Google thinks this will make the creation of maps using their tools as easy as creating a word processing document or a spreadsheet. Businesses can capitalize on this new tool by building information tools to help internal decision-makers or creating tools that face their customers. Along with the new Pro version of Google Maps Engine, Google also released a new mobile app giving users access to maps they create in Google Maps Engine, Maps Engine Pro, or Maps Engine Lite. Google also indicates they have released a set of connector tools with over 300 applications available through the connectors. Google even managed to include connectors for major database vendors like SAP and ESRI. The new features and Android app are targeted at business users and thus come with a fee of $5 per month. However, Google is making an introductory account available that will support all platform features and API access, but limits the number of map queries per day. Snapdragon builds world's first bullet time photo booth made from 130 HTC Ones Oct 22nd 2013, 01:47, by Chris Chavez Back in 2000, the bullet-time special effect was all the rage. Made famous by the Matrix in 1999 and found in countless video games and music videos thereafter (Creed’s “Higher” comes to mind), the effect could best be described as a virtual camera that spins around a subject in slow motion. Typically, this done during a kickass fight scene, gun action in mid-air, or anything else that considered “eXtreme” in ‘oo. Well, it looks like it’s making a comeback. To showcase the raw power of Qualcomm’s SoCs, the chipset maker built what they’re calling the Snapdragon Booth. The rig is made up of 130 HTC One handsets and using a special custom made Android app, they’re able to take a snap-shot in time, spiraling around subjects in 540 degrees. Okay, so a throwback to 14 years may not sound very exciting, have to say the results are actually pretty rad. Qualcomm’s will be taking the Snapdragon Booth on tour over the next few weeks, where it was just set up over the weekend in Venice Beach, CA. Had I known, I would have made the trip to play around with it. If you’re thinking something like this would be fun to check out yourself, you have until January 31st to vote in Qualcomm’s poll and bring the Snapdragon Booth to your city. Sliding "hamburger" menu rolling out in Google Play Oct 21st 2013, 23:54, by Nick Sarafolean Recently, the Google Play Store has been the subject of several different leaks and rumors, one of the more notable ones being the addition of the sliding “hamburger” menu that Google is so fond of. Tonight, we’re seeing that rumor come to life with a small update to the Play Store. This update does indeed contain the sliding menu and not really anything else. The update number is 4.4 and unless you’re head over heels about the hamburger menu, there’s not much point in going through the steps to force the update. It’ll be rolling out to everyone on Android 2.2 Froyo and up in the coming weeks so just hold your horses. Of course, the benefit that the update brings is that the Play Store design is now a bit more in-line with many of Google’s other apps and the Holo design in general. We certainly can’t bash that. Google Play Store 4.4.21 available for download Oct 22nd 2013, 00:25, by Chris Smith After having been discovered a few days ago, the new Google Play Store Android app update (version 4.4.21) is available for download, bringing a new user interface to Android devices. The new UI replaces the old navigation with a slide-out navigation menu that's meant to make it easier for users to discover and manage Google Play Store content on smartphones and tablets. The APK measures just 5.84MB and is already available for download (check out the Source link below) and manual install, but Google is also expected to push the download to your devices in the coming weeks. Android Police notes that the APK "is signed by Google and upgrades your existing Play Store. The cryptographic signature guarantees that the file is safe to install and was not tampered in any way." In addition to the new UI, other changes have not been observed. Last week's report also said that the Google Play Store app will get a "more drastic card-heavy UI," but that hasn't happened just yet. Media files: google-play-store-4.4.21-1

Qualcomm wanted to demo how powerful the Snapdragon 600 chip can be, and decided to create a cool bullet time photo booth using 130 HTC Ones on window mounts attached to a spiraling rail. Actors (and dogs) were placed in the midst of the ring, and caught in a full 540-degrees of excellent special effect footage that freezes space and time much like Neo can do. OK, so they just took stills from live video at the right time and stitched them together in an animation, but the former sounds way cooler. This isn't really new, as you can find similar footage all over YouTube, but it is pretty slick to watch.
