Google highlights gaming and reading in latest Nexus 7 promo videos Nov 9th 2013, 19:32, by Robert Nelson While much of the focus has been on the Nexus 5 this week, Google hasn’t forgotten about the Nexus 7. In fact, Google has recently posted a few new Nexus 7 promo videos on YouTube. These latest include In Play and Center Stage and they are following up the Best Friend and Study Hall videos we saw a few weeks earlier. Anyway, these latest two are both clocking in at 30-seconds in length and they are focused on gaming and reading. The In Play video offers a look at a wide variety of potential users. From adults sitting in airports to some older gentleman using the Nexus 7 to play chess in a restaurant. Simply put, Google is making an effort to show that the Nexus 7 can be a good casual game system for users of all ages. As mentioned, Center Stage is highlighting reading. But more specifically, Google is using this one to push the ebooks that are available in the Play Store — of which, Google notes how “from classics to bestsellers. Nexus 7 brings you the world’s largest collection of eBooks on Google Play.” And similar to the In Play video, Google shows this as being good for a wide variety of different users. Otherwise, while Google is continuing to push the Nexus 7 tablet, T-Mobile is also doing the same. The carrier recently launched pre-orders and is expected to begin shipping the Nexus 7 on November 20th. The LTE model of the Nexus 7 is priced at $349 direct from the Play Store and T-Mobile will be offering it with no money down and 24 monthly payments of $16. That does amount to a bit of a premium (actually, a $35 premium), but we suppose some will be happier to grab the tablet with the monthly payments. And well, having said that, it looks like the GameStick is suffering yet another small delay. While we could consider it nothing more than another in a series of delays, this time around the console has shown up with an interesting choice for a launch date — November 15th. Those more into the casual games as opposed to console games may not recognize the significance there. The 15th of November is when the PlayStation 4 will be arriving. Or in other words, we suspect the GameStick (assuming there is not another delay) will have a quiet launch. Then again, there could be some casual gamers still waiting for the opportunity to make a purchase. Regardless though, for now it looks like the GameStick has been set for November 15th. At this time the GameStop product listing sits with a $79.99 price tag and reflects that same shipping date. GameStop also has listings for other accessories including the dock, case and extra controller. In this case, those are going for $49.99, $9.99 and $39.99 respectively. Anyway, while we are vocal about the delays of the GameStick, it seems the Android game console market is tough for others as well. The OUYA had an interesting launch, and while that system remains available, there isn’t much in the way of chatter lately. Not to mention, we saw Bluestacks announce the GamePop (and GamePop mini) earlier in the year only to have the talk go totally quiet. We are also watching to see what Mad Catz can do with the MOJO game console. That one was priced back in October and is expected to arrive in December and for $249.99. Otherwise, a good deal still seems to be the NVIDIA SHIELD, while not the cheapest system around, this one does have quite a bit of functionality and can play Android games locally, Android games on a bigger screen and even stream PC games though the console to a big screen. Android 4.3 update for Galaxy Note II shouldn't be too far off Nov 9th 2013, 18:41, by Jared Peters Samsung has set their deadlines for updating the current crop of Galaxy devices to Android 4.3, and so far we’ve already seen a few devices receive the update, including some early builds of 4.3 on the GSIII and some carrier models of the S4 already receiving the update. There’s just one device that hasn’t gotten any attention; the Galaxy Note II. According to a lucky user in India, he managed to get his Note II updated to 4.3 at a local service station. This means that Samsung is busy loading the 4.3 update onto their services to prepare for an OTA rollout, which means international and unlocked users should see the update by the end of the month. On the carrier side of things, that also means that it’s very like that most carriers should hit their deadlines by the end of the month. AT&T and Sprint are slated for a November 20th rollout, with Verizon following on the 29th and T-Mobile right on their heels with a December 2nd update. The update should bring a few extra features to the Note II, similar to what we’ve seen in the SIII update. Samsung set to defend itself in court after leaking confidential Apple documents Nov 9th 2013, 18:23, by Jared Peters During the many, many lawsuits and court battles that Samsung and Apple have engaged in, there have been some occasions where each company has had access to private documents and information from the other company. Of course, that information should only ever be used in the context of the legal battles, but apparently Samsung had a different idea. In one phase of Apple and Samsung’s patent fight, Apple gave Samsung confidential documents explaining their patent agreements with companies like Nokia, Ericsson, Sharp, and Philips. The court issued a protective order that was supposed to prevent Samsung from doing anything with those documents that wasn’t related to the lawsuit. According to Apple, Samsung leaked that information to roughly 90 employees and 130 unauthorized lawyers, which is a pretty big leak. Samsung executive Dr. Seungho Ahn attempted to use the information to strong-arm Nokia into a licensing agreement, but now that Nokia has joined Apple’s side in a motion for sanctions, I’m sure Samsung regrets the idea. In their defense, Dr. Ahn said that “All information leaks,” and Samsung has stated that proper paper protocol wasn’t followed and they “deeply regret” the leaks. That sounds like a pretty weak legal defense, so there’s likely to be some major blowback on Samsung for this move. Judge Paul Grewal has asked Apple and Nokia to present recommendations for punishment and told Samsung to prepare some kind of legal defense.
