If you've looked at the hardware specifications for a top of the line handset at any point in the last few years, there's a good chance that you’ve seen NFC listed on the spec sheet. But despite the age of NFC, it hasn’t yet become the norm for all smartphones. If you're content with an older handset, or can't quite justify springing for the latest top of the line model, you may be wondering what all the fuss is about. So here's a rundown of what NFC is, how it works, and what it can be used for.

NFC stands for "Near Field Communication" and, as the name implies, it enables short range communication between compatible devices. This requires at least one transmitting device, and another to receive the signal. A range of devices can use the NFC standard and can be considered either passive or active, depending on how the device works.

Passive NFC devices include tags, and other small transmitters, that can send information to other NFC devices without the need for a power source of their own. However, they don’t really process any information sent from other sources, and can’t connect to other passive components.  These often take the form of interactive signs on walls or advertisements.

Active devices are able to both send and receive data, and can communicate with each other as well as with passive devices. Smartphones are by far the most common implementation of active NFC devices, but public transport card readers and touch payment terminals are also good examples of the technology.

How it works

Just like Bluetooth and WiFi, and all manner of other wireless signals, NFC works on the principle of sending information over radio waves.  Near Field Communication is another standard for wireless data transitions, meaning that there are specifications which devices have to adhere to in order to communicate with each other properly. The technology used in NFC is based on older RFID (Radio-frequency identification) ideas, which uses electromagnetic induction in order to transmit information.

This marks the one major difference between NFC and Bluetooth/WiFi, as it can be used to induce electric currents within passive components as well as just send data. This means that passive devices don't require their own power supply, and can instead be powered by the electromagnetic field produced by an active NFC component when it comes into range, but we'll talk about that in greater detail some other time. Unfortunately, NFC technology does not command enough inductance to be used to charge our smartphones, but QI charging is based on the same principle.

Electromagnetic fields can be used to transmit data or induce electrical currents in a receiving device. Passive NFC devices draw power from the fields produced by active devices, but the range is only short.

The transmission frequency for data across NFC is 13.56 megahertz, and data can be sent at either 106, 212 or 424 kilobits per second, which is quick enough for a range of data transfers – from contact details to swapping pictures and music.

In order to determine what sort of information is to be exchanged between devices, the NFC standard currently has three distinct modes of operation for compliant devices. Perhaps the most common use in smartphones is the peer-to-peer mode, which allows two NFC-enabled devices to exchange various pieces of information between each other. In this mode both devices switch between active, when sending data, and passive states when receiving.

Read/write mode, on the other hand, is a one way data transmission, where the active device, possibly your smartphone, links up with another device in order to read information from it. This is the mode used when you interact with an NFC advert tag.

The final mode of operation is card emulation, whereby the NFC device can be used like a smart or contactless credit card in order to make payments or tap into public transport systems.

Comparisons with Bluetooth

You might think that NFC is bit unnecessary, considering that Bluetooth has been more widely available for many years. However, there are several important technological differences between the two that gives NFC some significant benefits in certain circumstances.

The major argument in favour of NFC is that it has much lower power consumption than Bluetooth, even lower than the new Bluetooth 4.0 (aka Bluetooth low energy). This makes NFC perfect for passive devices, such as the advertising tags that we mentioned earlier, as they can operate without the need for a major power source.

However, this power saving does have some major drawbacks. Most noticeably that the range of transmission is much shorter than Bluetooth. While NFC has a range of around 10cm, just a few inches, Bluetooth connections can transmit data up to 10 meters or more from the source. Another drawback is that NFC is quite a bit slower than Bluetooth, transmitting data at a maximum speed of just 424 kbit/s, compared with 2.1 Mbit/s with Bluetooth 2.1 or around 1 Mbit/s with Bluetooth Low Energy.

But NFC does have one advantage when it comes to speed, faster connectivity. Due to the use of inductive coupling, and the absence of manual pairing, it takes less than one tenth of a second to establish a connection between two devices, a speed which has only recently been matched by Bluetooth 4.0.

Google Wallet is an NFC based wireless payment system that allows its users to store debit and credit card information to make payments at PayPass-enabled terminal at checkouts.

You may have noticed that NFC based Android Beam, or S Beam on Samsung's Galaxy handsets, actually uses Bluetooth or WiFi Direct to share information between devices. These two technologies actually only use NFC to quickly link the two devices together. This combination of wireless standards allows for maximum wireless transfer speeds, but without the longer connectivity times associated with Bluetooth.

A standard for the future

With the growth of interactive advertising, contactless payment systems, and the introduction of services like Google Wallet in the US, NFC is the wireless standard best poised to make our smartphones a viable alternative to credit and transport cards.

There are already over 300,000 MasterCard PayPass merchant locations in the US, but there's still a way to go before NFC adoption rates are high enough for these technologies to become viable on a mass scale. But if a few more budget and midrange smartphones start shipping with NFC, this could be the way that a lot of us pay for our goods in the future.

Many companies have made a business out of open source software, but Steve Kondik and his ragtag team of enthusiasts clearly have their work cut out. Going commercial and securing funding allows the team to fully focus on improving and growing CyanogenMod, and the partnership with Oppo is promising, but is it enough? Can Cyanogen make it as a business?

As a long time fan and user of CyanogenMod, the news that the team was going commercial was welcome news to my ears. Although it's tough to say at this point whether or not the venture will succeed, there's plenty of interesting implications for Android that will certainly attract a decent following of hard-core Android enthusiasts.

I certainly don't think that this is a big problem for Google, after all virtually every handset manufacturer tweaks Android and adds features for their own hardware. If anything this is more likely to be a concern for other manufacturers, such as Samsung or HTC, who are often criticised for offering bloated hardware.

I suppose that my only reservation about this venture is that the CyanogenMod ROM could lose some of its open source aspects that made it such a success in the first place. Will new features be made specifically for its own hardware, and how much support with other CyanogenMod developers received in implementing features on other handsets?

On the whole, having hardware that can be properly supported is going to give users a better CM experience and offer Android users a wider choice of software. If the hardware is right, there's every chance that Cyanogen Inc could attract a decent following. Best of luck to them.

I can’t seem to hold back my disappointment at the announcement of Cyanogen Inc. By now it’s clear that Cyanogen Mod won’t quite be the same Open Source community contributed project that it used to be.

I can definitely relate to some of the backlash. The people who have contributed to Cyanogenmod are now witnessing others make money off of what they helped create. We’ve already seen the fallout begin with the removal of the Focal app and I’d expect a decrease in outside contributions.

Of course, I bear no hate towards Steve and the rest of Cyanogen Inc. They’ve built something which people obviously think is worth investing in and are now getting paid for what they once did as a hobby. It’s obviously a dream come true for them and I wish them all the best in their future endeavours.

With Oppo all but being confirmed as the hardware partner for Cyanogen Inc. this October is going to be interesting. The Oppo N1, Nexus 5 and Sony Xperia Z1 are all vying for my money. Let’s just hope that the commercial move for Cyanogen doesn’t go all Gray Matter and Breaking Bad on us.

Incorporation, especially of a group that maintains open source software, has its advantages from a developer and end-user standpoint. Consider Canonical, makers of Ubuntu: though the company hasn't quite reached profitability, its potential has attracted and continues to attract millions of investor dollars, which pay developer salaries. With a full-time coding staff, Canonical has the freedom to not only to pursue amazingly innovative software and services, but also to commit to firm deadlines and provide long-term support for its products. Volunteer efforts are great and wonderful things, but most consumers want assurance that the software they rely on will continue to receive updates and function far into the future. The not-for-profit CyanogenMod team couldn't achieve that.

Certainly, there are some dissenting opinions, both within and outside of CyanogenMod. (The removal of Focal is evidence enough of that.) Many believe the focus of a corporate CyanogenMod will be profit, not user experience. I disagree. The Android ROM space is highly competitive – circumventing any overt cash grab would be as simple as flashing new firmware. CyanogenMod, therefore, has good reason to make their consumer distribution of Android the best it can be.

In sum, considering the benefits a startup of this sort is sure to enjoy, I couldn't be happier with the team's decision, and look forward to seeing what fruit their hardware partnerships bear.

Android 4.4 KitKat spotted again, this time build KRS74D

Android 4.4 KitKat is coming, and coming soon. While we all sit here and patiently await more details from the folks at Google, others are looking around for any sort of indication that a final build is coming soon. Well, today’s latest news comes from the Chromium Bug Tracker, which spotted a build of KitKat from just last week.

The folks from Droid-Life stumbled upon some details that found a rather new version of Android running around, and one we hope leaks on video soon so we can have an idea of what to expect from Google’s latest mobile OS. The Chromium Bug tracker spotted Android 4.4 KitKat build KRS74D this week.

In case you didn’t know, the K stands for KitKat (or Key Lime Pie) just like all current releases have a “J” for Jelly Bean. As for the rest of the numbers, the folks over at Myce had a detailed description of how the build is named.

The build number KRS74D likely means that it is Kitkat / Key Lime Pie (‘K') builds from the primary development branch ('R'). Made in the third quarter of this year ('S') and the final number is x-the day in the quarter, in this case 74. The final character marks the build of the day, the D is the fourth build of that day.”

So going on that guideline this latest version of Android is from September 12th, if Math is correct, and probably one of the newest builds out and about. Aside from anything being pushed out this week. The leaks of new colors, Google Now cards, and the Nexus 5 all coming with KitKat in late October are starting to pile up.

We have a feeling a mid October announcement will take place, with the Nexus 5 and KitKat launching on October 31st, or sometime in November. Which is when previous Nexus phones landed. In November.

Cyanogen conversation leak tips OPPO N1 with dual-boot option

Steve Kondik of Cyanogen appeared earlier today in the latest OPPO teaser video. These teasers are all leading up to the September 23rd announcement for the OPPO N1 smartphone. Anyway, given the combination of news from earlier in the week about Cyanogen forming into a company and looking for hardware partner and the earlier video from Kondik — it was seeming likely that the N1 and CyanogenMod were going to be connected in some way.

Well, it now looks like the N1 will arrive with the ability to dual-boot into the standard OPPO Android installation and CyanogenMod. Similar to how we have yet to see which version of Android would be shipping with the N1, we have yet to see what version of CM we should be expecting. But first, this latest set of details has arrived by way of Android Authority who were made privy to a conversation that offered some details on what can be expected.

The conversation talks briefly about what can be expected in terms of the N1 and also a little bit about Google Apps, CTS compliance and even the US market. How about we begin with that last bit. Based on what was said, it looks like those in the US market will be able to pick up an OPPO N1 with CyanogenMod installed. In the conversation, Koush was asked (in regards to the N1) whether it is “stock CM or still OPPO firmware.”

The response was that it will ship with “CM option in the US market.” Moving over to the CTS compliance portion and it appears as if they are looking for this so they can ship with Google apps already installed. Those not familiar with running CyanogenMod may not realize that Google services do not come already installed. The process is simple to get them installed and setup, but it does require you to flash something called gapps after CyanogenMod is up and running.

Otherwise, the bit of conversation that was leaked is somewhat limited, but it did offer another interesting tidbit. It was said that there is “no money being exchanged” with the OPPO deal. To further that, Koush went on to comment about how that is “not really a concern.” But this is where the CTA compliance and Google apps bit comes back into play. Koush then goes on to mention how there is “some indirect yet valuable advantages for us… like getting CM certified.”

All that being said, it looks like September 23rd is going to be the date when we see the a handset unveiled running CyanogenMod out of the box.

NFL Runner: Football Dash endless runner arrives on Android

For those of you getting ready for another exciting weekend of football and Week 3 of the NFL, we have a brand new game on Android worth sharing. It’s called NFL Runner: Football Dash, and is essentially a watered down version of Temple Run that’s been replaced with NFL players. It’s quite fun and officially licensed too.

NFL Runner is an officially licensed NFL game. Meaning we’ll have all the official and accurate logos and such. Sadly we don’t have players names, but you’ll be able to just imagine you’re Adrian Peterson or Michael Vick as you run throughout the levels.

You’ll be springing into the end zone in no time with this game brought to us by the NFL. Developed by Pocket Gem we can expect it to be better than many other similar types of games too. It’s much better than all those movie knock-off titles, that’s for sure. With a fast pace and great graphics this is a must-try for many NFL fans.

You can completely customize your player, and team. Then from there collect power-ups to boost speeds past defenders, increase jumps, and even throw further. They have plenty of power-ups for those looking to enjoy hours and hours of endless runner fun. It’s very similar to Temple Run or Subway Surfers, so if you enjoy those titles, this is worth at least checking out. After all, it is completely free.

However, there’s ads for McDonald’s during gameplay, and your collected coins are added every 8 hours, so if you don’t have enough, you’ll have to make some in-app purchased to keep playing. So in a way it isn’t free unless you’re willing to wait. Terrible.

Moto X Android 4.3 fastboot files extracted from test device

There has been talk of camera improvements coming for Moto X users and it looks like that has been confirmed by way of a recent leak. XDA forum member jimmydafish has posted fastboot files that were pulled from an Android 4.3 test build for the Moto X. These files are available for download, however we would advise against installing them just yet.

According to details coming from the posting, it was said these files are “definitely from a test build.” Further comments point towards a camera that “does seem to be improved” and also that this build appears to be sluggish as compared to the currently available Android 4.2.2 build. Then again, this is said to be a test build so the bit about it having some issues comes with less in terms of surprise.

Bottom line here, it looks like Moto X users can expect to see some camera related improvements when Android 4.3 arrives. Unfortunately though, this leak doesn’t put us any closer to knowing when Motorola plans to begin updating the Moto X to 4.3. That all aside, the files from this leak have all been put together in a single zip file for those ready to do a bit of playing.

Those feeling adventurous should make sure their handsets and data is backed up before they begin. Plus, in order to move forward your Moto X bootloader will need to be unlocked. Assuming you are already unlocked and ready to begin playing, that zip file along with directions for Windows users can be found in the XDA posting.

Google Keyboard screenshots in Play Store show Android 4.4 grey color scheme

The wait for Android 4.4 Key Lime Pie has many of us going crazy. So much in fact that Google changed the name of the next version of Android to KitKat, and launched a full fledged KitKat campaign with chocolate galore. While we’re all waiting for an announcement from Google, a few eagle-eyed fans at AndroidPolice stumbled on some new Google Keyboard screenshots (from Google themselves) in the Play Store potentially showing us Android 4.4 KitKat.

What happened here is a recent update to the Google Keyboard app in Korea had Google staff upload some new screenshots to the Play Store, showing off the application just like all developers do. In the listing you’ll see a brand new light grey, almost white color scheme, which has been rumored for the next version of Android.

Not only that, but the Android debug logo apparently has been changed and we see a little slice of Key Lime Pie, instead of the Andy bugdroid robot. Again, this is in the new color scheme. Now this could just be a custom ROM or color, but coming from Google’s very own app and keyboard, we have a feeling it’s legit.

Above you see the Jelly Bean Android debug icon changed out for a piece of Key Lime Pie. Which was either a decoy, or the developers haven’t got around to changing this to a KitKat. Or whatever icon they’ll use. A few recent rumors have suggested Android 4.4 will be slightly more of a visual overhaul than we all thought, but so far this is still about all we have to go on.

If the early October rumors of a release date and unveil are true, Google should be shedding more light on the next version of Android soon. That, and we’ll be seeing more and more leaks.
