Samsung says gold Galaxy S4 was not copying Apple, released before iPhone 5S announcement
Oct 1st 2013, 17:33, by Dima Aryeh

After the announcement of the iPhone 5S in champagne gold, people went a little crazy for gold smartphones. The gold model of the iPhone became worth quite a lot and sought after, despite being a tad flashy and tacky, in my opinion. Samsung took this hype as an opportunity to post about its gold Galaxy S4 (exclusive to the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Kuwait) a few weeks after the Apple announcement, getting some serious hate along the way.

As tradition demands, everyone immediately started accusing Samsung of copying Apple. That really seemed to be the case, and Samsung didn’t seem to have any sort of defense this time around. Even if it wasn’t a legal issue, it wasn’t a cool move in many people’s eyes. But apparently, Samsung isn’t the bad guy in this case.

The announcement of the golden Galaxy S4 was not actually an announcement, but a reminder that the device exists. The device was announced on August 27 and released on September 8, a full two days before Apple even announced the golden iPhone 5S. Samsung, at least to a degree, cannot be accused of copying Apple.

On top of that, Samsung speaks about its long history of making golden devices, some even with real gold, proving that Apple did not invent the golden smartphone and people shouldn’t be making such accusations over a color.

So there you have it. Samsung should not be getting so much crap for having a golden smartphone in their lineup, especially now that we know it was both announced and released before the announcement of the gold 5S. And even then, copying a color isn’t the best accusation to make. So rest easy knowing that everyone can have golden phones.

AT&T to begin deploying fiber network in Austin, Texas to compete with Google Fiber
Oct 1st 2013, 17:14, by Jared Peters

ATT fiber

AT&T has announced that they will be bringing their fiber network to Austin, Texas later this year to compete with Google’s own fiber network. AT&T’s network matches up with Google’s fairly well, offering up to 1 gigabit-per-second speeds. AT&T is hopeful that this deployment will bring their network to tens of thousands of people in the area by the end of 2014. The CEO of the wireless network operator seems to think that the costs associated with deploying fiber optic cable has come down enough that it’s a smart financial decision to start aggressively pushing this new network, and that he hopes to see more companies expand fiber networks into new markets in the next few years, and hopefully he’s right. Increased competition in the fiber market would mean better prices for consumers and faster internet connection speeds. It’s a win-win situation.

Android tablet sales surpass iPads
Oct 1st 2013, 15:51, by Robert Nelson

It appears as if we are seeing a shift in the tablet space. According to data coming from a recent ABI Research report, Android tablets are now outselling the iPad. The report points specifically to the second quarter of 2013, noting that “number of Android-powered tablets surpassed iOS-based slates for the first time.”

samsung_galaxy_note_10-1_2014_edition_ac_0-540x3611

Interestingly though, while the report points towards Android tablets overtaking the iPad, the hardware revenue is still sitting equal between the two platforms. It was said that the “iPad represented only 50% of worldwide end-user revenues.” Basically, this has Apple splitting the market at $6.3 billion for the quarter.

As for the money, this report offers an explanation about how the average selling price of the iPad has dropped 17 percent over the past year while the remainder of the market saw an increase of 17 percent. While some Android tablet users were convinced early on in terms of the smaller 7-inch models, it looks like that bit has finally caught on across the board.

ABI Research is showing that tablet shipments have grown 23 percent year-over-year and that smaller 7-inch tablets are now the majority of shipments. There wasn’t much in the way of breakdown in terms of Android models, however they did offer some detail on the iPad, and despite Apple taking so long to make a smaller iPad model — it looks like the iPad mini is doing well.

The success of the iPad mini points back towards the previously mentioned 17 percent drop. It was said the 7.9-inch iPad mini represented about 60 percent of total iPad shipments and also represents 49 percent of iPad-related device revenues for the quarter. But again, the bit we suspect Android fans will be happiest to hear is how Android has overtaken iPad tablets for the first time.

thumbnail Galaxy Note 3 benchmark performance artificially boosted by Samsung, new report proves
Oct 1st 2013, 16:07, by Chris Smith

Galaxy Note 3

Samsung is apparently not done optimizing its handsets to behave differently when running a benchmark app, with the Galaxy Note 3 also receiving the same treatment.

A new report from Ars Technica offers more details on how Samsung is intentionally boosting the performance of the U.S. Galaxy Note 3 to score better than its competitors in benchmark apps – performance improvements of up to 20% (even 50% in one case) have been observed by the publication during tests.

One of the things Samsung was proven to have done to improve scores was to prevent the phone's processor cores from idling when running a benchmark app – instead they are all kept running at maximum speed. But the company is also suspected to have improved GPU performance and altered the display frame rate when running benchmark apps.

Combined, these action result in much better performance reports for the Galaxy Note 3, which is able to score consistently better than the LG G2 in similar tests, despite both devices using the same processor.

The publication was able to fool the Galaxy Note 3 into treating benchmark apps like normal apps by repackaging the benchmark apps and replacing their official names with a different name. That way the Galaxy Note 3 failed to detect them as benchmark apps and a "regular" benchmark test was performed – apparently the phone only checks for certain app names to trigger the CPU boost.

Interestingly, the Galaxy Note 3 still scores better than the LG G2 in same tests once Samsung's boost is removed, but not by as much as with the boost effects on.

Not too long ago, it was discovered that Samsung's Galaxy S4 is also offering a boosted performance in benchmark apps – that time around a GPU boost was found. Because Samsung explained back then that the same boosting effect can be found with core apps such as "the S Browser, Gallery, Camera [and] video player," in order to improve battery life and heat dissipation on the Galaxy S4, Ars Technica investigated whether the Galaxy Note 3 performance boost can be found in other Samsung apps for similar reasons.

The publication discovered that CPU boosting is only set to occur for benchmark apps:

The file we ended up with is called “DVFSHelper.java,” and it contains a hard-coded list of every package that is affected by the special CPU boosting mode. According to this file, the function is usedexclusively for benchmarks, and it seems to cover all the popular ones. There’s Geekbench, Quadrant, Antutu, Linpack, GFXBench, and even some of Samsung’s own benchmarks. The two functions applied to this list seem to be “PACKAGES_FOR_BOOST_ALL_ADJUSTMENT,” which is no doubt the CPU booster, and “PACKAGES_FOR_LCD_FRAME_RATE_ADJUSTMENT,” which makes it sound like the phone is also altering the display frame rate.

In the gallery below, you can check out images from Ars Technica that show how the Galaxy Note 3's processors fail to idle and run at full speed when a benchmark app is used, the "Stealthbench 3" Geekbench 3 version used to fool the Galaxy Note 3 into treating a benchmark app like a regular app but also benchmark results (single- and multi-core) for the Galaxy Note 3 (with and without booster), the Optimus G2 and Galaxy S4.

With all that in mind, we can only wonder why a mobile player like Samsung still feels the need to employ such tactics – whether there's a different reason this kind of performance boost happens during benchmark tests, Samsung should at least have explained it beforehand.

At the end of the day, benchmarks alone will not help sell handsets – and in Samsung's case that shouldn't even be a problem considering that some of its flagship handsets sell themselves.

Finally, the Galaxy Note 10.1 – 2014 edition may have a similar benchmark performance boost as the Galaxy Note 3, the publication notes.

While we wait for Samsung to explain everything, let's hear what you think about Samsung's benchmark cooking practices in the comments below!

Apple and Google overtake Coca-Cola as most valuable brands, but Apple gets the edge
Oct 1st 2013, 13:40, by Jared Peters

google-logo-640-80

Prior to 2013, Coca-Cola held the top spot in Interbrand’s list of most valuable brands in the world for 13 years. This year, the king of soft drinks fell to number 3 behind two major technology companies; Apple and Google. Apple took the top spot, valued at an incredible $98.3 billion, and Google grabbed second place with a close $93.2 billion valuation. Coca-Cola was valued at $79 billion, and that was with a 2% growth in valuation.

Microsoft stayed at the number 5 spot, and IBM fell slightly to number 4, so that means that 80% of the top 5 companies are technology companies. Not surprising, considering the types of companies that consistently make headlines and major profits. Also worth mentioning is Samsung. They climbed up a spot from last year and landed at number 8.
