If you're like me, you have too many accounts across too many different services to count. You might have one password for all those, or you might vary it up every now and then, depending on the service. According to Norton, 38% of people they surveyed still write down passwords. Wouldn't it be nice if we had a place, that was accessible from a PC or Android device, to store all of that information securely? This is where Identity Safe, a new service that Norton is beta testing for the public. All you have to do is register a free account, and download the Android beta from here. Then you can sign in, and start saving all your information to the cloud.
There are several ways to save passwords nowadays. Similar password vault apps exist on the Market, like Password Safe Pro or Keeper. Some people, such as myself, use note-taking apps like Evernote to keep their information in one place. And of course, there's always the trusty old pen and paper. But with the introduction of Norton's Identity Safe, there's finally a viable option for storing passwords, PIN numbers, and general information that we forget from time to time.
So, who's downloaded Norton Identity Safe on their PC and/or Android device? What do you think? Let us know by leaving a comment! The full press release can also be found below.

Rypple, a web-based social performance service, just released an Android app, and it looks pretty interesting. Rypple is a tool for the office that lets employees and managers interact and give feedback on things. With this open dialogue, managers and employees will (theoretically) feel less stressed, which helps them achieve their goals. The app itself includes the ability to give someone a "congrats" or a "good job" here and there, to help keep everyone on the right track. It's a great concept that never really caught our attention until now. The intro video below might give you a better idea of how Rypple can help in the office.

If you'd like to give Rypple a try for yourself, you can download it from the Market by using the box below. We want to know, do you use Rypple on the web already? Managers, does it sound like something you might use in your workplace? Let us know in the comments! The full press release can also be found below.

Humble Bundle, a new game market for Android, has just launched, and it offers an innovative take on purchasing games. Essentially, you choose how much to pay, and you get four games on your Android, Linux, Windows, and Mac devices. Instead of paying for games for each of those operating systems, you pay one price, and the games are multi-platform capable. Furthermore, users can choose how much of their money goes to developers, how much goes to the Humble Bundle team (they call it a "Humble tip"), and how much goes to charity. If you feel like doing your daily good deed, you can dictate what percentage of your money goes to the Children's Play Charity and the Electronic Frontier Foundation. The video below explains it a bit more.
Click here to view the embedded video.
As of right now, there are only four games available for purchase, but we expect more in the near future. It'll certainly be interesting to see how people divide their money with this service. It's worth noting that this promotion will only run for two more weeks, so get your bundle while you can! More on this as it develops.
With that being said, how would you divide your purchase? Has anyone tried Humble Bundle yet? What do you think of the games? Sound off in the comments!

Down in the dumps over the rumors that Samsung has decided to pull the Galaxy S III from their Mobile World Congress announcements?  Wondering what, if any, stage could be bigger than the annual Barcelona event?  We're getting word today that the reason that Samsung has opted to put the brakes on the unveiling is because they have their sights set on another event with worldly implications.
If the new rumor proves to hold true then we might expect to see the Galaxy S III get a formal announcement right around the time the Olympics get started in London later this summer.  The move would also address the rumored concern about spacing between international and U.S. versions.  As many of you know, the wait between the unlocked GSM models and our carrier-branded iterations is an agonizing few months wait.
On the other side of the coin we've got another source advising that the Galaxy S III is still expected to be at Mobile World Congress.   More specifically, the handset will arrive in the middle of March.  This certainly lines up with previous releases for the Galaxy S series and makes sense on the surface.
Moving along, we're hearing whispers that Samsung will be announcing a slightly tweaked Galaxy Note S later in the year.  No indications yet as to what would be bumped but it will likely include a faster processor.  What's more, it's being reported that there is also a Galaxy S II Plus is on the horizon.
We'll be the first to tell you that some of this stuff may not be much of a stretch.  Samsung has been known to announce slightly modified versions of their Galaxy line for more than a few models, most recently in the Galaxy S Advance.  To suggest that we're in for an enhanced Galaxy Note or Galaxy S II is like saying Motorola is expected to release a Droid 5 in 2012.  Either way, we're on board with whatever it is!
How about a fresh batch of Samsung rumors? originally appeared on AndroidGuys.

Remember last week when we reported on Symantec's finding that Android.Counterclank had infected somewhere between one and five million Android users?  According to Lookout Mobile Security, infected isn't the word we should be using.  As they see it, there is no malicious activity going on here, just shady advertising techniques.  A post on Lookout's blog breaks down what they see going on with Apperhand code inserted in the 13 applications.  While they found that there's no real threat to worry over, the details are shady nonethless.
How would you feel if an app was pushing bookmarks to your Android smartphone?  That's one of the things going on with these applications, as uncovered by Lookout.
  1. It is capable of identifying the user uniquely by their IMEI, for instance, but unlike some networks this SDK forward-hashes the IMEI before sending to its server. They're identifying your device, but they are obfuscating the raw data.
  2. The SDK has the capability to deliver "Push Notification" ads to the user. We're not huge fans of push notifications, but we also don't consider push notification advertising to be malware.
  3. The SDK drops a search icon onto the desktop. Again, we consider it bad form, though we don't consider this a smoking gun for malware provided the content that is delivered is safe.  In this case, it is simply a link to a search engine.
  4. The SDK also has the capability to push bookmarks to the browser.  In our opinion, this crosses a line; although we do not believe this is cause to classify the SDK as malware.
We're already hardcore against applications that push ads down to our phones and tablets with crap that shows up in notifications bars.  To hear that we're getting bookmarks pushed to our device as well...? We hate to single out developers here, but if you use this type of stuff then we cannot endorse your experience.
For its part, Symantec has published a follow up post which is definitely worth a read.
Ok, so Android.Counterclank has pissed off somewhere between one and five million Android users.

Community-based GPS and traffic application Waze was updated to a 3.0 release today, and boy does it look sharp.  Featuring a completely redesigned look and feel, Waze 3.0 is gorgeous, simple, and easy to learn.  If you've not played with the free application in the past we definitely recommend kicking the wheels on this version.
Aside from getting a facelift, Waze 3.0 also offers social search integration with Foursquare & Yelp.  What exactly does that mean?  Well silly, it means that users can search for real-time events and check-ins just as easily as finding a nearby Target store.  Look for the consumer-generated data in the navigation setting where you'll also see reviews as they happen in real-time.

Waze, the World's Fastest-Growing Driving Community Launches v3.0 for Android; Crowd Goes Wild
Foursquare & Yelp Integration Brings Social Layer to Android Navigation
(Palo Alto, Ca.) January 31, 2012 -- Waze, the now 12 million-strong community of traffic resistors is happy to announce the newest tool in the battle against traffic: version 3.0 for Android. The latest iteration of the app features a complete overhaul from the ground up, including a new minimalist graphic interface as well as Foursquare and Yelp POI integration to make it the most powerful local search navigation system on the market.
New Minimalist UI
The new graphic redesign takes full advantage of Android phones' screen size by minimizing the Waze interface to display only 2 large buttons on a full screen map. In addition, a new display of traffic and events en route helps drivers makes the smartest travel choices before they leave. The guidance system has also been amplified with large fonts and complete text-to-speech capabilities for optimized hands-free navigation -- plus the new aesthetic gives the app a little more swagger and style.
The New Social Location Stack
Traditional GPS systems are built on static, old world maps and points of interest, which never reflect real-time information about new businesses, pop-up shops, or live local events. The new social eco-system provides a combination of consumer-generated data from people driving, checking in, and reviewing locations in real-time. This layer of social location information is now available to drivers in a navigation setting. With community-curated data from Waze, Foursquare, and Yelp, drivers can now search for real-time events as easily as they would find their local Walmart.
#1 Transportation App With 87,000 Reviews & 4 ½ Stars
The Waze Android community sure is passionate about outsmarting traffic together. Waze is consistently number one in the free transportation apps in the Android Marketplace, maintaining a steady 4 ½ star rating from nearly 87,000 reviews; nearly 5 times the count of the next most popular app.
Waze is available for free in the Android Marketplace or at http://m.waze.com.
About Waze
Waze is a social traffic & navigation app based on the world's largest community of drivers sharing real time road info and contributing to the "common good" out there on the road. By simply driving around with Waze open users passively contribute traffic and other road data. Users can take a more active role by sharing road reports on accidents, police traps, or any other hazards along the way, helping to give other users in the area a 'heads-up' about what's to come– and because it's 100% user-generated, the more people who use Waze, the better (and more fun) it gets!

A New York Times article from late last week tells us that Barnes & Noble is putting the final touches on yet another Nook product.  Expected to for Spring 2012, it's the bookseller's latest in a string of attacks against Amazon and the Kindle Fire.  Nothing else is know about the device aside from the fact that it exists.  So, with that, we could be looking at a number of possible scenarios.
...Barnes & Noble is trying to strike at Amazon with another device. At its labs in Silicon Valley last week, engineers were putting final touches on their fifth e-reading device, a product that executives said would be released sometime this spring...
A few possible scenarios for the latest Barnes & Noble Nook device:
  • New Nook Tablet with a larger display
  • Improved hardware for existing Nook Tablet
  • New product altogether
  • Enhanced Nook Simple Touch
Thus far only two of the four Nook products have been Android-based however we're going to keep an eye on the developments.  Which of the above situations would you like to see pan out this spring?

If you find yourself with ten minutes to spare and have a hankering for some "found footage" sci-fi, then you'll want to to check out the video below.  Called The Swarm, it's shot entirely on Xperia smartphones and edited as part of the Xperia Studio project.  What's the premise?  As the title suggests, it's about an alien invasion of insects that happens over London.
We won't be the first to say this, but we were immediately reminded of Attack the Block, if only because of the feel and general theme.  Other than that we're digging the multiple characters and the action here and feel inspired to grab our smartphones and shoot the next big thing.

Safely, the digital parenting arm of Location Labs, today announced that they've powered more than one billion family location checks since its debut.  Spread across millions of phone on AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile, the locates help parents keep an eye on what their kids are doing with their phone and what they are up to.  For parents, the app also helps to lead into discussions on topics like texting while driving, sexting, and/or cyberbullying.
Today sees Safely unveiling a new initiative for T-Mobile customers called Family Check-In.  And just like it sounds, it helps to keep an eye on where children are and whether they are really at school when they say they are.  It's as simple as checking in on Facebook , Gowalla, or Foursquare and will be included in T-Mobile's FamilyWhere service.
Safely, a Division of Location Labs, Hits One Billion Locates on Monetized Family Safety Services; Introduces Free Check-In Service
Expanded Safely Family Locator Platform Lets Users Share Location via Free Mobile App
Emeryville, Calif. January 31, 2011 – Safely, a division of Location Labs, today announced that its premium Safely Family Locator has enabled more than one billion family safety location checks since inception. These "locates" have been initiated by Family Locator subscribers across millions of child phones on three Tier 1 US wireless carriers. Having achieved this milestone, Safely now introduces Family Check-In, the newest offering in its suite of digital parenting tools.
The service is first launching in partnership with T-Mobile USA, Inc. under the name "FamilyWhere Check In" and is available as a free download in the Android Market, complementing the T-Mobile FamilyWhere service and expanding the Safely Family Locator platform.
"One billion premium locates reinforces family safety and security as the most primal and high value use case for location-based services," said Tasso Roumeliotis, CEO of Safely and Location Labs. "By adding a free component to the Safely Family Locator platform via Family Check-In, we raise awareness of our locator services and bring immediate value to T-Mobile customers."
Safely Family Locator is the flagship in Safely's suite of premium digital parenting services and is distributed in partnership with wireless carriers. Family Check-In expands the functionality of Safely Family Locator with a free mobile app component that lets kids easily show parents that they arrived at the library or a friend's house with a location-verified map.
With 75% of 12-17 years olds having cell phones, kids are the new mobile power users. Many parents require their kids to check in and parents already proactively locate their kids with great frequency (see infographic). Family Check-In complements existing behavior since kids are already checking in via social apps.
"We are excited to launch the T-Mobile FamilyWhere Check In with Safely," said Torrie Dorrell, Vice President of Applications, Content and Games, T-Mobile USA. "It is yet another way T-Mobile is enhancing our customers' lives and addressing their needs with a valuable free service that introduces the benefits of location sharing to families."
T-Mobile FamilyWhere Check In is available for free in the Android Market as part of the T-Mobile FamilyWhere app.
