If you're a Motorola Atrix 4G owner, you might be disappointed with this bit of news.
Motorola sent out a confidential email to its users about an upcoming imminent update. As many have suspected and yes, feared, this update will include a few minor bug fixes. It is not the big update (ehem, Ice Cream Sandwich) that you guys are anticipating.
According to Brief Mobile, the update will be available by February 7. It will update both unmodified and unrooted phones to the latest software version 4.5.141. It will also include the following features:
  • Latest Android security fixes from Android 2.3.6+
  • Bluetooth voice commands while the device is asleep
  • Improvements to the Messaging and Contacts applications (unspecified)
  • WiFi settings update and AT&T Mobile Hotspot usage built-in
  • Increases in stability, power management
While this is an upcoming update, many speculate that this will be the final update for the old device. Considering that the Atrix 4G has the same internals as the Motorola Xoom tablet, it will be very shameful.
But yes, Motorola still has to update its long list of devices, if it plans to update to the latest Android OS, Android 4.0. Maybe when this happens, an update for the Atrix 4G will be available once again.

If you're a Motorola Atrix 4G user, how do you feel about the new update? Are you disappointed that you're not getting Android 4.0 yet?

With the number of games dedicated to helping people be ready in instances of a zombie attack, it can only be expected that new tools will be introduced to the market. This is exactly what the creators of Xappr intended, when they released the light gun style accessory compatible for both iOS and Android devices. The company responsible for this innovation is MetalCompass. Through the accessory, users get to communicate with the compatible games on their phone and allow them move their character with the gun and fire the trigger. Attached to the accessory is a standard headphone which registers clicks. To hold the phone in place, the device also has a flexible clamp.
The accessory has been found compatible with standard shooting games or even augmented reality titles which incorporate the camera of the smartphone. For developers who wish to incorporate Xappr along with their existing or new game, they can use the supplied SDK.
As of this writing, there are only three iOS games that use the hardware. However, they have not yet been released. Soon, there will be an exciting game developed by an Israeli which lets the gun simulate laser tag. Developers, you should get busy!

MetalCompass plans to release the accessory later this year. However, they will be showing it off at the International Toy Fair in Germany. The toy can be pre-ordered from the website of the company through PayPal at a price of $44.99. Shipping is expected to start in June.

As an update for our earlier report that HTC has started fixing Wi-Fi security issues on several devices, we have learned that these fixes are already available to the affected phones as a part of a regular update on the device. The affected phones include:
  • Desire HD (both “Ace” and “Spade” board revisions) – Versions FRG83D, GRI40
  • Glacier – Version FRG83
  • Droid Incredible – Version FRF91
  • Thunderbolt 4G – Version FRG83D
  • Sensation Z710e – Version GRI40
  • Sensation 4G – Version GRI40
  • Desire S – Version GRI40
  • EVO 3D – Version GRI40
  • EVO 4G – Version GRI40
If you are the owner of any of the phones mentioned above, you should have the fix available to you. However, there are certain phones which will need a manually installation of the patch.
"HTC has developed a fix for a small Wi-Fi issue affecting some HTC phones. Most phones have received this fix already through regular updates and upgrades. However, some phones will need to have the fix manually loaded. Please check back next week for more information about this fix and a manual download if you need to update your phone," a notice posted on the company's website read.
The Wi-Fi security issue was discovered by CloudPath Networks' Senior Engineer named Chris Hessing. The vulnerability leaks that affected SSID ( network name) and Wi-Fi credentials were then issued as an alert by the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT). Because of this vulnerability, attackers are able to capture and harness information to hack the network of a user through the right application.
Even though the bug was discovered last September, Bret Jordan, Open1X Group's security architect; still praised Google and HTC for their fast responsiveness and for working on the issue.
"Google has made changes to the Android code to help better protect the credential store and HTC has released updates for all currently supported phone and side-loads for all non-supported phone," Jordan said. "Google has also scanned every application in the Android Market for this vulnerability and discovered no apps exploiting it at this point."

Samsung’s Epic 4G series gave the world a pair of very good phones. Delivering a host of features for their prospective users, the basic Epic 4G and the Epic 4G Touch are popular choices for many a person on the go. There’s some good news for those who already own one – their awesome smart phones are only going to get more awesome. A new kernel source for both the Epic 4G and Epic 4G touch is available and this can only mean that an OTA update will soon be released.

Samsung’s open source portal, Samsung Open Source, has the kernel source and other needed data to update the original Epic 4G to EL30 ready for download. For the Epic 4G Touch, the same data is available, however, the update is up to EL29 only. It’s usually a good sign for an upcoming OTA update that kernel source code has been released. In the past, Samsung has always promptly followed the release of such information with an update to Over-The-Air protocols –  a great boon for many a developer and modder seeking to improve their phones’ capacities.

The bonus to this news is that Sprint may be planning to disable the use of Carrier IQ software on the Epics via the update. They’ve already disabled it on their side and they’ve pushed HTC to strip it out of  the HTC EVO 3D. It is expected that they will continue the trend with the Samsung update – pushing the Korean giant to disable the data-collecting software, which should make quite a few people happy.

The Galaxy Nexus has become a big hit. The Android smart phone delivers a lot in its small form. Produced by Samsung, it boasts a super AMOLED display, a dual core processor, a gigabyte of RAM, and runs on Ice Cream Sandwich. Google fanboys have drooled over it since first images of it have been released. When it hit US shores though, there was a bit of a fly in the ointment. Verizon had gotten hold of the Nexus contract and were bringing it out – with a minor change. The Google label was replaced by a Verizon logo.

Although not exactly a world-ending dilemma, it wasn’t exactly a pleasant surprise for many a Google supporter. Since release day, many of them have been looking for a replacement cover and turning up empty. This is mostly because of the slightly smaller size. Even the original GSM cover doesn’t replace the Verizon-branded one. It maybe a bit obsessive to do it, but there is something wrong about having a Nexus without a Google logo on it.

In their quest to find the perfect cover, a lot of these Google fanatics have tried out many a replacement. It’s a wonder that no enterprising company has yet to take advantage of this. For those who’ve just recently got their hands on a Verizon Galaxy Nexus and want the more “authentic” Google cover, skip on that ambition for awhile. Even the 20 dollar covers being advertise on Amazon to fit a SCH-I515 chassis – which the Nexus has – won’t fit. Better to just save up and wait for some company to finally release a good replacement – or just be satisfied with that Verizon logo.

It looks as if one of Android Central’s Forum members got the notification for the Android 4.0.4 update today and he was able to pull the file out and upload it for everyone to play with. In order to flash the update you will need to be completely stock with stock recovery to install as-is. This update is only for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus, if you flash it on your GSM Nexus and you brick it, it’s not our fault we did warn you!

The prerequisites:

  1. You need a Verizon Galaxy Nexus to update to this version of Android 4.0.4 (for GSM Nexus updates this process will work as well).
  2. You need the Android SDK installed. Note the path.
  3. You need fastboot. (Windows | Mac)
  4. You need to unlock your bootloader.
  5. Download the Android 4.0.4 unofficial update.
  6. Download the latest ClockWorkmod recovery image from here.

Now, the instructions:

  1. Copy the OTA package above to the /sdcard folder on your Galaxy Nexus
  2. Drop the ClockworkMod file in the same folder you have fastboot in on your computer in the SDK folder (either /tools or /platform-tools).  Rename it to cwm.img to make things easy.
  3. Reboot your Galaxy Nexus to bootloader mode (hold volume-up and volume-down, then press power).
  4. Plug your phone into your computer, and open a command prompt or terminal.  Navigate to the folder with fastboot and the cwm.img inside it.
  5. At the command line, type the following: fastboot-windows.exe boot cwm.img (or just fastboot.exe if that’s what you’ve got)
  6. Use the ClockWorkMod recovery menu to flash a zip file from the SD card, and choose the OTA zip file you downloaded earlier.
  7. Let things run their course.
Presto, you’ve now got Android 4.0.4 on your Verizon Galaxy Nexus. It seems like a lot of steps. But once you get the hang of it and understand what’s going on you’re booting into ClockworkMod recovery instead of flashing it to your phone first, you’re good to go.
If you find any changes to in this build please let us know in the comments. We have not been able to find a changelog as of yet.

Today’s question is, what custom ROM are you running on your device? There are so many ROM’s available out there, and for many devices a lot of the ROM’s are basically the same with only a few tweaks. Although for those of us with Motorola devices there are a bit less stable ROM’s available to us. For example, my Bionic only has about 2-3 stable ROM’s available that I know of. Then when you get to the Galaxy Nexus, there are more ROM’s then Galaxy Nexus’ that have been sold! Ok, maybe I’m exaggerating a bit, but you get the point right?
So in the comments just state which custom ROM you’re running along with the device you have, also say why you like it so much. Maybe there is a certain feature you love? Think of it as sharing your ROM with others that have the same device as you.
