Update - 47

Posted: 23 Feb 2012 02:00 PM PST

MWC is one of those special times of the year when the media and tech nerds can come and drool together over beautiful soon-to-be-iconic devices. It's also one of those times that seems to take forever to get here. Fortunately, we get scraps of information in the interim to make the waiting more tolerable. Such is the case with NEC's MWC lineup, a trio of rather sexy Android phones that are sure to please a wide range of palettes. As you can see in the picture above, they're currently billing these as:
  • The "Best Cloud UX Device" (a two 4.3" screen folding phone)
  • "Large Screen in One Hand" (a 5" screen behemoth)
  • "The Most Stylish" (a 4.3" screen device with a focus on...well...style).
There are no announced carriers or anything of the sort, as it seems these are for more of a showcase than anything else. It's also worth mentioning that NEC has decided to go all out with Ice Cream Sandwich on all of the devices, forgoing the physical navigation buttons for the on-screen software buttons. Only time will tell if these pretty little strumpets will be successful, but they certainly look attractive. It'll be good to hopefully see some full specs next week.
What do you think of this trio of devices? Is there something else that you're really looking forward to at MWC? Let us know in the comments!

Samsung will be at Mobile World Congress, and surely they'll be introducing new devices. As we get closer and closer to MWC, more and more leaked devices make their way to us, and today is no exception. A Samsung device showed up at Bluetooth SIG, codenamed as GT-N8000, and it's listed as "Samsung Mobile Tablet." Now for reference, the model number of the Galaxy Note is GT-N7000.
This might be the leaked Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 that we heard about, as its model number is close to the original Galaxy Note. Also, the GT-N8000 is listed as an "end product," which means that it's complete and ready to be launched anytime. There's really no other information on the GT-N8000 right now, but rumors and logic tell us that this is the Galaxy Note 10.1.
While we wait for Samsung to clear the air at Mobile World Congress next week, what are your thoughts about the GT-N8000? Could it be the Galaxy Note 10.1? Does Samsung have something else up their sleeve? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

There's something I love about Android, and that's ROMs. I love all the developers out there who work hard and deliver stuff beyond the possibilities. Now such stuff is coming towards the HTC Sensation and Sensation XE. We all know that Sensation is  one of HTC's best devices so far. Two "release candidate" ICS ROMs are leaked for the original Sensation and XE, and I want to mention it first that it's risky business, so if you are good at hacking and stuff then do it, otherwise don't take the risk. As it's not a final version, there might be some bugs and glitches as well.
However, the leaked ROMs tell us that HTC is right now working on ICS for mentioned devices, and as HTC said that ICS will be out "soon", so you can expect the update next month.
Folks, the download link is available below, so try it on your own risk. Are you going to try the ROM or you will wait for official version from HTC?

Today, ASUS officially started rolling Android 4.0 update for their first ever tablet known as EeePad Transformer. ASUS also mentioned that " we will announce several new innovations at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week". It clearly means that ASUS has something up their sleeves, and I was thinking what it could be. ASUS just love teasing us, so they released a video on YouTube teasing a high-definition tablet, and the description of the video is "twice the detail, twice the fun".
You can expect a slightly upgraded version of the ASUS Transformer Prime. It could be the tablet we saw few weeks ago, which was codenamed as ASUS TF300T, featuring an 1080p display, better processor (quad-core?) and keyboard dock. Also ASUS will be launching the PadFone at the MWC, which is one of the most anticipated Android gadgets of 2012. Check out the teaser video:

Anyway folks, we are just 3 days away from the mega-event. I am really impressed by ASUS' latest stuff, and I am sure they will try their best at MWC. Who's looking forward to ASUS? Anyone?

Surpassing 2 million downloads on the Android platform, Glympse has made a lot of progress in a short amount of time. Having just over a million Android downloads 3 months ago, they've reached another milestone and plan to debut a couple new features at the Mobile World Congress, which is coming up real soon.

"We first launched Glympse on the Android platform, so we're incredibly
excited to be working with the Android team to launch our newest features
and to also announce such a substantial and exciting milestone for the
platform," said Bryan Trussel, co-founder and CEO of Glympse,Inc.
Tap-n-Track, a new feature that will be available on the Glympse version of Android v4.0 will provide a fast, new way to exchange a "glympse" with another Android user. Using Android Beam, this new feature will establish an instant connection between users who wish to share their locations.
Also announced for MWC is a highly-requested feature that integrates
Glympse with a user's calendar. Now users can send a Glympse automatically
based on their calendar appointments. Glympse automatically imports recipients,
time frame, and destination, making it easy for people to know which meeting
attendees are on the way and their ETA for appointments. Live Demos of the "Tap-n-Track" and the Calendar Integration features will be
run in the Android Booth (Hall 8, AC25) at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona
from Monday, Feb 27th to Thursday, March 1st.
While the latest version isn't available yet, you can still find it on the Android Market using the link below. For the Android v4.0 users, keep an eye out for the updated application which should be coming within the next week as MWC 2012 kicks off.

Libelium designs and manufactures hardware technology for the implementation of wireless sensor networks so that system integrators, engineering and consultancy companies can implement reliable Smart Cities solutions to end users within the minimun time to market. They recently announced the launch of their latest radio module that brings an extra layer of intelligence, which can be used to communicate with any nearby Android device.
This Wifi radio extends the possibilities of The Internet of Things to iPhone/Android apps developers as it completes the current connectivity possibilities - already covered by ZigBee, Bluetooth and 3G/GPRS –, allowing for the first time direct communications between the sensors and the smartphones even without an intermediate router.
Click here to view the embedded video.
Libelium's new Wifi sensors enable system integrators to create easily intelligent monitoring systems for the urban environment. Libelium's CTO David Gascón says, "Now sensor nodes can connect directly to Cloud servers using a standard protocol such asHTTP". He adds, "This is a milestone in order to ensure a quick spread of Internet of Things applications since sensor devices may connect  automatically to the existing Wifi networks deployed in cities or even to  our own home routers making new deployments an easy task".

What's 4 billion dollars get you these days? At T-Mobile, that sum of dinero will buy you a new network. A little over a month ago, T-Mobile said they weren't too concerned with deploying LTE as they claim it provides little benefit over the existing HSPA+ 4G they use now. Perhaps a little change of heart lead to the announcement of an LTE deployment by 2013. It's obvious they are trying to play catch-up now that 4 other carriers in the US are already testing or have deployed LTE as their 4G offering. It will be fun to watch as they scramble trying to stay up with everyone else.
Additional investment areas core to the company's challenger strategy include aggressively pursuing the B2B segment, expanding the sales force by 1,000; ramping up advertising spending; and attracting new mobile virtual network operator (MVNO)partners with an efficient platform for getting to market. T-Mobile will also continue to remodel its retail stores and expand distribution.
T-Mobile Chief Technology Officer Neville Ray detailed the company's network strategy, which includes installing new equipment at 37,000 cell sites and refarming spectrum to launch LTE in 2013.1 The key catalyst of refarming is the additional spectrum T-Mobile will receive as a result of the termination of the AT&T transaction. Also, other enablers are faster adoption of 3G and 4G services and improved device performance.
T-Mobile will invest a total of $4 billion over time into network modernization and LTE deployment. Over the next two years, this represents approximately $1.4 billion in incremental network investment. T-Mobile expects to reach broad deployment of LTE, with service in the vast majority of the top 50 markets and 20 MHz service in 75 percent of the top 25 markets.
"Today, we operate America's Largest 4G Network delivering a fast and reliable 4G data experience with HSPA+," said Neville Ray, chief technology officer, T-Mobile USA. "Launching LTE next year lets us take advantage of technology infrastructure advancements and benefit from a more mature LTE device ecosystem while continuing to meet the growing demand for data with a powerful 4G experience."
T-Mobile expects to be the first carrier in North America to modernize its 4G network infrastructure with new antenna integrated radios on many of its cell towers, which will deliver higher performance and strengthen coverage.
More than 90 percent of T-Mobile device sales in the fourth quarter were 3G and 4G smartphones. As data usage and smartphone adoption accelerate, fewer customers are utilizing 2G services. This enables T-Mobile to refarm existing spectrum holdings, reducing the amount of 1900 MHz PCS spectrum being used for GSM; to deploy HSPA+ 4G services in the PCS band; and to make room in the AWS band for LTE. In addition to creating capacity for LTE in AWS spectrum, deploying HSPA+ in the PCS band will harmonize T-Mobile's spectrum bands with the U.S. market and international carriers. As the company refarms spectrum, T-Mobile will continue to support its 2G customers.
T-Mobile's 4G HSPA+ network, which currently covers well over 200 million people, will continue to deliver a competitive 4G experience. T-Mobile will continue to expand its HSPA+ 4G footprint and its innovative 4G product and service offerings. For example, the recently announced Samsung Galaxy S® Blaze 4G, launching in March, is the newest smartphone in T-Mobile's portfolio to support the faster speeds offered by the HSPA+ 42 network.

ASUS Transformer has been around for a long time now, and it's one of the best selling Android tablets to date. Last month, we heard that ASUS EeePad Transformer will receive ICS update in early February, and guess what? ASUS has finally launched the Android 4.0 a.k.a Ice Cream Sandwich update for ASUS Transformer in Taiwan. Check out the official announcement they made on their global Facebook page:
Many of our Eee Pad Transformer TF101 users have waited patiently for the promised Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update and we are delighted to announce that the first wave of FOTA updates for TF101 firmware v.9.2.1.11 started today in Taiwan. The update will FOTA in other regions soon after.
Although we will announce several new innovations at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week, we take great pride in delivering on-going enhancements and support for products that are well into their life cycle.
Also ASUS UK confirmed that the update will be live in UK tomorrow:
Those of you with your finger firmly on the tech news pulse will have already noticed that the ICS update for TF101 is rolling out in Taiwan today.
The OTA update will, barring security issues, be starting in the UK tomorrow so keep a steady eye on your devices and let us know when you get it and what you think!
Now I am thinking when the update will hit USA, because that's what all the US EeePad Transformer users are thinking. Hopefully, we can expect that ASUS will launch the update for US market within coming weeks, so let's wait for announcement from ASUS.

The Toshiba thrive, now available in 7-inch and 10-inch versions is due to receive an update to Android v4.0 by the end of Spring 2012. While no super official word has been released,  Eric Paulsen confirmed via Twitter they are shooting for an update by June. I say June, because that's when Spring officially ends and summer begins.
I'm not sure what the hold up is, Toshiba doesn't have a ton of Android devices to support. As far as i can tell, they only have the Thrive in 2 versions with different screen sizes. So why does it take six or seven months to issue an update? It's one of my biggest issues with anyone making a high-end Android device.
Words of Wisdom for OEM's: If you want to play this game, provide your end-users with a product that shows you are invested enough to continue supporting the device after you get paid. Chances are they will keep coming back for the next round of high-end Androids if you do.

Lookout Labs has released a new application for Android handsets today which seeks to educate users as to what is going on inside their device. As many of you know there are many ad-supported networks to choose from and each brings about different types of advertisements, notifications, and other policies. Since they vary from network to network, each has its own level of intrusion or privacy concerns.
The new app, called Ad Network Detector, takes a look at each of your applications and tells you what's happening on a per title basis.  Compiled from information across the top 35 networks, the app then educates consumers as to what each can and/or will do.
It scans the apps on your Android device for the presence of any of the 35 mainstream ad networks, including those that are capable of displaying out-of-app ads. With Ad Network Detector, you'll be able to see exactly which ad networks are on your phone, understand their capabilities, and understand the private information they are accessing. With easy access to this information, you'll be able to decide whether you want to keep the app that has certain ad networks on your phone.

We recently came to know about HTC's new name branding, and the two phones under this branding are HTC One X and One S. HTC One X is actually the HTC Endeavor/Edge which will be launched at the Mobile World Congress next week. Our friends over at Pocketnow managed to get their hands on leaked shot of the HTC One X, and the device looks familiar (reminds me of Sensation).
It comes with a 4.7-inch 720p display, Android 4.0, and also it has capacitive buttons as well. While  previously announced ICS devices are without any front-buttons, maybe HTC wants to change the style a bit.
The HTC One X and a few other models will be launched with the updated version of the famous user interface known as Sense UI 4.0. It's a matter of few days now, so folks grab your popcorn  and get ready for MWC.
Are you looking forward to the One X? Tell us in the comment box below.

Who needs to announce a Galaxy S III when the current model is selling faster than ever?  Samsung today revealed that they have sold more than 20 million Galaxy S II smartphones since it made its debut in April 2011.  After jumping out to 10 million sales in the first six months, the second 10 million have come in the last four months.  Of course it helps when you have a U.S. presence during that second half of the period, but who's keeping track?
It stands to reason that Samsung doesn't feel the need to cannibalize their own sales by offering up a new model.  Hitting the 20 million mark seven months faster than the first Galaxy S handset, this is the company's fastest selling smartphone ever.  Maybe they can ride this horse for a bit longer...
Congratulations to Samsung for the 20 million figure and we can't wait to see what's next!

Despite being considered a smaller player in the mobile landscape, ZTE wants everyone to know that they have plenty of good stuff on tap for Mobile World Congress.  One such device, a quad-core Android smartphone should put them on the same playing field as other larger handset makers.
ZTE may not have much of a name here in the United States today but that should change over the next few years.  Why?  Because it's one of their goals to become a top-three brand by 2015, that's why.  And you don't get to be one of the bigger names without having some sort of U.S. presence.
"There is no doubt that this year's Mobile World Congress will again see some exciting device launches. The new devices from ZTE will demonstrate how ZTE is without doubt among an elite group of handset providers as next generation telecommunications networks roll out globally. ZTE returns at least ten percent of its revenues back into R&D to ensure that it sustains its position as a true market innovator – and we're counting down to being able to showcase this to the world's mobile industry next week," said Mr. He Shiyou, Executive Vice President and Head of the Terminals Division at ZTE.
According to the press release issued today, ZTE has eight products on the agenda for next week's conference, however it's not all Android.  Yeah, there's going to be some Windows Phone stuff in there as well.

Unless we're mistaken, LG has pretty much wrapped up all of their Mobile World Congress announcements with a few days to spare.  Today sees them unveiling the quad-core behemoth known as the the LG Optimus 4X HD, an Android 4.0 smartphone with all the latest bells and whistles.
Details for the phone fall right in line with the stuff we were expecting and include  a 4.7-inch IPS HD display, 1.5GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor, 1GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, 8-megapixel rear camera, 1.3-megapixel front camera, and a whopping 2150mAh battery.  Thanks to the 4-PLUS-1 Tegra 3 chipset we can expect to see top of the line performance with battery life that bests today's competition.
The LG Optimus 4X HD will arrive in Europe in the 2nd quarter with a presumed U.S. debut shortly thereafter.  If history repeats itself then we should hope to see T-Mobile carrying a G4X or G4X HD later this spring.

Just a few hours ago, we mentioned a mysterious post from HTC on their Facebook page, a simple phone with the number 5 in it, with the caption "this Sunday you'll see something fast." We were quite puzzled, until now. NVIDIA just released a blog post, that might just clear up our confusion. The Tegra 3 processor, which is quad-core, apparently has something that was previously referred to as vsmp (variable symmetric multiprocessing), and is now being called the "fifth core." In a nutshell, it's separate from the other four, and acts as a battery-saving core. NVIDIA is marketing this as the 4-PLUS-1 quad-core architecture. The four main GPUs handle large tasks and applications, while the fifth core carries out less strenuous processes. This leads to less that the four main cores are doing, which helps cut down on battery drain.
Something tells us that HTC's Facebook post has is related to NVIDIA's latest announcement. Michael Rayfield, who posted the blog entry, warned that we should expect this architecture at MWC next week. All the pieces of the puzzle are starting to come together: HTC, Mobile World Congress, Tegra 3, fifth core... something about this says "awesome" to us, but we'll leave such judgments to you.
So with all that being said, who else is ready for MWC? Does the fifth core concept make you less critical of quad-core processors? Sound off in the comments!
