Verizon’s Droid Does Campaign Back With a More Cozy Vibe

Posted: 30 Apr 2012 01:46 PM PDT

You remember back in 2009 when we started seeing the Droid Does commercial campaign? Remember how it called out the iPhone in what it couldn’t do? Remember how we just stopped seeing the Droid Does commercials? Well the point to this line of questioning is that the Droid Does Campaign is back but it’s much less edgier in its presentation than before. Given that Verizon sells both the iPhone and the Droid line nowadays it makes sense for Verizon to tone back the iPhone bashing.

So instead of the in-your-face campaign it once was, it’s now a more “warmth-of-a-cozy-fire” direction. If you don’t believe me you can hit the break below. There we have the new commercial for you that shows off the Droid 4, RAZR, and RAZR MAXX. We also have two of the older commercials too for the sake of comparison. Let us know what you think in the comments below. Is this new direction a nice breath of fresh air for the campaign or did you prefer the old anti-iPhone direction?

Google Engineer Designs KegDroid, an Adruino-Powered Kegerator Activated by NFC

Posted: 30 Apr 2012 01:13 PM PDT

Many times when people are bored they turn to activities that can be rather uneventful or sometimes even deviant. In the case of Google engineer Paul Carff, his bout of boredom lead to a project that is neither deviant or uneventful and the term bad-ass definitely comes to mind. Meet KegDroid, aka “Betsy”, Carff’s automated kegerator that is controlled by a Motorola Xoom tablet and an NFC card.

KegDroid is essentially an Arduino-automated beer dispenser that that uses an NFC card to link to your Google account. Once linked up and as long as you are authorized, a special app pops up that allows you to pick from the two beers on tap and select the amount of brew to be poured. KegDroid is currently just a personal project that belongs to Carff but in the video he mentions that we would like to see it available around the world in the future. That means that we are stuck dreaming about owning such a cool toy for the time being. Jump past the break to see Carff’s full demo video and to see what could be in store for us in the future.

You can get this all for $80 per month and no contract. Unlimited Mobile-to-mobile calls are inherent of the current prepaid plans but it’s suggested that Unlimited Talk will consist of being able to call any phone, anywhere. In the announcement Big Red also added some prepaid mobile broadband options to choose from. They include:

  • · $15 for 250 MB of data weekly
  • · $60 for 3 GB of data monthly
  • · $90 for 10 GB of data monthly
Hit the break below for the press release if you’re interested in reading more. While we will have to wait until tomorrow for this plan to go into effect, unlimited talk and text with a gig of data thrown in is not too shabby, although, it still doesn’t have Boost Mobile beat when it comes to unlimited prepaid plans.  Here’s hoping though that unlimited talk means being able to call anyone and everyone! Enjoy!

Dual-Screen Tablet Design Gets Patented by Samsung

Posted: 30 Apr 2012 11:40 AM PDT

Samsung has never been one to shy away from innovation and this is especially true when it comes to screen size and quality. The Galaxy Note is a perfect example, what with its 5.3-inch screen and the fact that it really spurred the push for the “phablet” design, like LG‘s Optimus VU. Samsung looks to push the innovation envelope again if their recent patent is any indication. Patent No. D658,173, which lists Kim Dong-Hun as the inventor, was filed on April 7th, 2012 and is for a “design for a terminal for portable mobile communication.” Should this device actually be manufactured, it would come with a dual 7-inch screen in a clam-shell design. Also, as you can see from the image above it will come with a remote/pointer. This suggests that it could be geared towards business professionals.

Top

Front

While the Tablet P from Sony was one of the first tablets to feature the dual-screen aspect, folks have complained that thanks to its rounded, clam-shell design, it’s difficult to use on a flat surface. Although the Sony Tablet P wasn’t really designed for business purposes to begin with. So, the idea that Samsung could release a more business-centric tablet could be plausible and most likely welcomed. While nothing suggests that a tablet like this is in the works, the idea of a well implemented dual-screen tablet would certainly be nice. Don’t you think?

Lookout Mobile Security adds File System and Install Monitoring to both free and premium users

Posted: 30 Apr 2012 11:34 AM PDT

We’re big fans of Lookout Mobile Security here at Talk Android. They just keep getting better. Today they announced two new services: File System Monitoring and Install Monitoring. These two services are aimed at those of you that like to download apps from alternative markets, forums, or any other means. Lookout already has protection for scanning apps after installation, but this update will scan these 3rd party apps before installation. That’s the ultimate form of protection because there’s no sense installing something that’s malware to begin with.

Don’t worry if you download these third party apps to your SD card because Lookout will scan your card and let you know in real time because it constantly ‘watches” your card. Since most people look to install an app immediately upon downloading, this makes sense. Many traditional scans are scheduled so if you download an apk, but your scan isn’t scheduled for another 3 days, what’s the sense?

With Install Monitoring, users will be given an option to scan all third party apps at the beginning of the side-load installation process.

Hit the links below to grab the update or give Lookout a try if you haven’t already. It’s free to get started.
