Hands on with the HTC EVO 4G LTE for Sprint [Video]

Posted: 04 Apr 2012 04:11 PM PDT

I had a chance to get my hands on the HTC EVO 4G LTE tonight in New York City at the Sprint/HTC event. This is definitely the best EVO yet as it should be. The HD Audio demo here sounded incredible. What’s there  not to love about this beast. It has a 4.7-inch 720p display, a 1.5 GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal memory, what might be the best 8MP shooter (f/2.0) in smartphone history, a 1.3MP front facing camera, microSD for up to an additional 32GB, LTE, Beats Audio, HD Audio, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and Sense 4. Pre-orders start on May 7 and priced very attractively at $199.00. Check out the hands on video. My apologies, I said it was the EVO One in the video because I couldn’t get it out of my mind.

Sprint and HTC Announce the HTC EVO 4G LTE

Posted: 04 Apr 2012 04:06 PM PDT

Sprint and HTC just announced the latest release from HTC and Talk Android was live on scene for the action. Sprint’s Dan Hess took the stage to announce what is to be Sprint’s newest flagship phone. The awesome HTC EVO 4G LTE.

The new device from HTC marks the return of the kickstand and is prety much the U.S. version of  the HTC One X. It has a great 8MP camera with the new Image Sense software, Beats Audio and Android 4.0 in conjunction with the newly announced HTC Sense 4. Unlike the HTC One X this new device sports a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor instead of the Tegra 3, has a microSD slot, supports Google Wallet via NFC and of course the addition of LTE. The Evo 4G LTE is much like the One X in many ways. It has a 4.7-inch Super LCD 2 display with a resolution of 720 x 1280, 1GB RAM, 16GB internal memory, a 2,000 mAh battery and measures in at a svelte 8.9mm thin. One interresting feature about the device that we have yet to see in the states is the phone’s HD Voice feature. Dual mics and decoders in combination with the Sprint network will vastly improve in-call audio quality and will reduce muffled sounds. During the presentation they even had actor Keifer Sutherland call in to demonstrate the phones audio quality. It was actually a recording rather than a live call but either way it sounded pretty damn good.

There has been much talk recently about the HTC One X’s 8MP camera in conjunction to Image Sense. The Evo 4G LTE sports a noticeable red ring around the lens said to envoke the look of a high end DSLR camera. The picture speed and Quality is said to be some of the best found on a mobile device to date and the new EVO4G LTE has the exact same camera and software and should make Sprint customers happy. The camera allows in 40% more light providing much better picture quality and there is a dedicated camera button for easy shooting. Start up and auto focus is super fast and there is a continuous burst mode that allows 4 shots per second up to 90 photos total. The camera’s flash can also adjust its brightness based on the subject you are shooting and you can take snapshots while recording video. You can even snag a still image out of video playback! Pretty rad. This is definitely going to be the camera to beat moving forward.

The HTC EVO 4G LTE has a look that is very much similar to previous EVO phones and has a texture very similar to the One X. The aluminium casing has been anodized black and has red accents that are unmistakably EVO. About the kickstand I mentioned earlier. It has been anodized red to match the theme and allows for the phone to be propped up in landscape and in portrait mode. Now you can charge your device while watching videos!

You can expect to see preorders begin on May 7th for $199.99 with a release sometime later in Q2 and be sure to check out our hands on video from the show.

Ice Cream Sandwich coming to the DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX “soon”

Posted: 04 Apr 2012 02:32 PM PDT

If you remember our previous story, Best Buy had leaked that an update to Ice Cream Sandwich might be available on April 4th for the DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX. It seemed like this leak might be accurate when we heard that there was a build of Android 4.0.3 that was leaked and then pulled for the DROID RAZR.

But, here we are at April 4th, and nothing is stirring, even for the Motorola Feedback Network members.

Some people have sought out Motorola on Twitter to see if they could find out the truth of the matter. In response, Motorola Mobility announced that the DROID RAZR MAXX will indeed receive ICS, but there is no official release date. They’ll be giving out more details soon.

What do you think Motorola means by “soon”? Today, tomorrow, or next month? Let us know in the comments.

Posted: 04 Apr 2012 02:17 PM PDT

Ever since it arrived on the market with a Splash, third party replacement keyboard SwiftKey has gone from strength to strength. It’s still my personal keyboard of choice and has made me 27% more efficient, saved me 23,463 key strokes and corrected over 11,155 typos… apparently. There are a huge choice of replacement keyboards on the Google Play Store, each promising a different unique selling point so it’s important to keep innovating in order to stay ahead of the game. Touchtype, the developers behind SwiftKey is doing exactly that and has an exciting new update on their official website, providing that you’re a VIP member.

SwiftKey 3 Beta is available to download now in the VIP lounge and brings a number of creative new features. You will also find a number of new themes available including Ice Cream Sandwich Holo for all you Android purists out there.

We hope to see the full release hit the Play Store soon, however if you simply cannot wait then head on over to the VIP lounge and get yourself signed up. Be warned though, the servers are taking a pounding at the moment so you may need to show some patience.

SwiftKey (http://www.swiftkey.net), which recently won the Most Innovative App at the Global Mobile Awards in Barcelona, has packed the latest release full of fantastic new features and updates, including:

Smart Space – a major leap forward in auto-correction technology, Smart Space adds to SwiftKey’s already cutting edge correction by detecting miss-typed or omitted spaces across whole phrases of poorly typed text in real-time. SwiftKey now offers the most accurate and complete auto-correction available on a smartphone or tablet.

Two new themes – a new theme, ‘Cobalt’, to match SwiftKey’s new look and feel, and an Ice Cream Sandwich-styled ‘Holo’ theme, as voted for by SwiftKey’s VIP community.

An enhanced UI – a much larger space bar and smart punctuation key help improve accuracy and make it quick and easy to access common punctuation.

Additional languages – SwiftKey 3 now offers support for an additional seven languages, bringing the total up to 42. The new languages are Korean, Estonian, Farsi, Icelandic, Latvian, Lithuanian and Serbian.

New punctuation functionality – intelligent, language-specific punctuation handling (for example, spaces between words and certain symbols in French, such as ‘Bonjour !’).

In addition to these key updates, SwiftKey 3 includes core improvements such as backup of learned language data and improved options for users to customize auto-correction features.

This SwiftKey 3 Beta is only available through the SwiftKey VIP community, which new members are welcome to join now for a limited time only athttp://vip.swiftkey.net. SwiftKey’s development team will be working closely with the community to gather feedback and make improvements.

Gmail App Gets Updated For Froyo, Gingerbread And Honeycomb Devices

Posted: 04 Apr 2012 02:01 PM PDT

Gmail is certainly among the most important apps we use and has to get updated periodically. That’s why Google went ahead and updated the Gmail app for all Froyo, Gingerbread and Honeycomb 3.2 devices. The majority of Froyo and Gingerbread users will see some performance improvements, while Honeycomb 3.2 users will be treated to a sample of ICS. That means tablets with Honeycomb 3.2 will be able to swipe to move between newer and older conversations, tap your account to access Recent labels and set custom notifications for individual labels. For you developer types– there’s also a new label API available for you to use at your disposal.

If you’re on a device with one of these OS versions, be sure to grab the updated app today in the Play Store using the QR code or Play Store link below.

Dropbox Doubles Referral Bonus and Plans to Pull the 23GB of Free Space from HTC Hack Users

Posted: 04 Apr 2012 02:00 PM PDT

You want the good news or the bad news first? OK, bad news? If you were one of the many people to use the ’23GB of free storage’ hack meant only for new HTC devices, well, Dropbox intends to take that back. It appears DB is much smarter than the hack’s developer had thought because DB knows the international HTC One series phones aren’t released until tomorrow. That means if you accessed this round-about way for obtaining free space they know it wasn’t completed in a legitimate and qualifying manner. Here is what Dropbox support had to say about the matter in their forums:

The official Dropbox 23GB HTC promotion will not start until sometime early this month, when the devices are released. To earn the extra 23GB of extra Dropbox space you will need to link your HTC Sense 4.0 device to your Dropbox account and complete "Get Started."

The method to earn 23GB that is being circulated on the XDA Developers forum and on other blogs and forums is illegitimate. We plan to remove any space received using this method.

So bummer news for those of you who were hoping for a total of 25GB’s for free for two years. It will be removed and may have actually been done already. You may want to check on that… OK, on to the good news!

The good news is that Dropbox has doubled the referral bonus from 250MB to 500MB at a maximum of 16GB in incentives. For those of you who are paid users you will be pleased to know that your referrals have doubled to 1GB per referral at a max of 32GB of additional space. Oh yeah, this is retro active too, so be on the lookout for a little bump in space if you have any referrals under your belt.

HTC One series is launching on UK networks

Posted: 04 Apr 2012 01:50 PM PDT

The big launch day for the HTC One X and One S is coming up fast in the UK. You can buy the phones in any brick-or-mortar store for the main UK networks starting tomorrow, April 5.  If you can’t wait that long, several networks are allowing preorders today.

Here are the details of each UK network provider and their plans for the One X and One S:

  • Orange: the One X and One S are coming soon.
  • Three: you can order both online today for delivery tomorrow, the official launch day. With unlimited data, the One X is free on-contract from £35 per month, while the One S costs at least £32 per month. Another option is paying £99 upfront, and then paying from £27 per month for the One X, or from £24 per month for the One S.  All of Three’s contracts are 24-months long.
  • O2: for delivery tomorrow, O2.co.uk now lists the HTC One X (in grey) as available “online only”. There are several 18 and 24-month deals to choose from, but you’ll have to choose one of the most expensive to avoid any up-front fees. The best value are O2′s “On & On” deals. With these, you get a One X for free, unlimited calls and texts and 1GB of data for £36 per month, with the option of increasing the data allowance up to 2GB for £41 per month. Finally, O2 also offers the One X on Pay-As-You-Go for £479.99.
  • Vodafone: you can pre-order the One X (white and grey) and One S (silver). The S is £36 per month, and the X is available for free on 24-month plans from £41 per month. The first 10,000 customers to order each handset will score a pair of urBeats headphones and 10 free tracks per month from Vodafone Music.
  • T-Mobile: matches Vodafone’s prices of £41 per month for the One X and £36 per month for the One S. T-Mo UK, though, offers unlimited data if you choose the ”full monty” plan. The phones will launch online and in stores tomorrow, according to the network.
Are you picking up either the One X or the One S in the UK? Let us know in the comments.

Motorola Android Powered Home Phone Visits the FCC

Posted: 04 Apr 2012 10:59 AM PDT

According to a recent FCC filing Motorola is prepared to bring an Android phone into your home via your land line. Yes, land lines are still being used apparently as Moto plans to offer up the HS1101 and MBP2000PU to users who desire a more smartphone-esque experience with their home phone.

The two devices that Moto have created appear to be the same except in color. They could potentially run Ice Cream Sandwich on their 3.2-inch 400 x 240 LCD display. Other features include a front facing camera with video chat abilities, stereo speakers, built in answering machine, Wi-Fi, microSD storage, micro USB and access to apps through SlideMe.

I am not too sure about this one, it looks damn ugly to me. And besides, I haven’t had a land line in like 4 years now that smartphones do exactly the same thing and more. Why add another monthly bill to your responsibilities when you already have those features in your pocket? What do you guys think? Does this appeal to you at all?
