Leaked Samsung device possibly headed to Sprint

Posted: 10 May 2012 04:49 PM PDT

Samsung SPH-L300

Here we see an image of what is claimed to be the Samsung SPH-L300 which, based on its product code, appears to be destined for Sprint in the near future and the folks over at BriefMobile got the first look at this rumored device.  If it hadn't already struck you as looking familiar with it's big silver chin, the HTC Nexus One comes to mind for us but the internals are a definite departure from that original Nexus phone.

Rumored to sport a Qualcomm MSM8960 processor (the Snapdragon S4 chip) which is the same unit as in the LTE enabled HTC One X and Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE, this phone should pack quite the punch should it come to fruition.  Other features and specs this device is reported to have include 1 GB of RAM along with 4 GB of ROM, 4G LTE, NFC, and Bluetooth 4.0 all underneath Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich.  However, the display resolution is quite disappointing at only 480x800.  With all that hardware inside, we'd hope to see a 720p resolution display or at least a qHD display, but keep in mind this is still an unconfirmed device and that means things are subject to change.  We'll bring you more info on this as it rolls in.

Hype, expectation and the Samsung Galaxy S III

Posted: 10 May 2012 01:55 PM PDT

Android Central

It’s been a week or so since I first laid eyes on Samsung’s new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S III. On the night in London, the barrage of information was relentless -- brand new hardware, a new design language, a redesigned TouchWiz and countless other software additions. And over the past few days, all of us in the tech world have slowly been able to form some opinion on the latest high-end smartphone from the Korean electronics giant.

But this article isn’t just a reaction to the Galaxy S III -- we’ve presented plenty of coverage on that (maybe more than enough) already. Instead it’s more a dissection of how we came to know the S III, and how that in itself has colored popular opinion of the device. We’ll also take a look at some common criticisms of the phone, and see just how valid they are. Join us after the break as we examine the world of hype and expectation surrounding the Samsung Galaxy S III.

Eee Pad Slider

ASUS has announced on Twitter that the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Eee Pad Slider (SL101) is rolling out today for users here in the states. It's going to bump your tablet up to version 9.2.1.21, have all the delicious improvements you expect from Ice Cream Sandwich, and turn your slider into 10.1-inches of awesome.

To see if you have an update waiting, just look in the device settings where you can manually check. Tegra Zone

NVIDIA is celebrating the one-year anniversary of the TegraZone in a big way. They're kicking off the first annual Player's Choice Awards, where you and I, the folks who play the killer Tegra games, get to vote for our favorites. Each of us get to vote for three different categories -- best graphics, best gameplay, and best overall fun -- and of course there's prizes to be won for both the players (hey, that's us!) and the developers themselves.

It's going to work like this. You'll hit the TegraZone (We have links and a handy QR code at the end of this post), answer a few questions, and maybe win a slick ASUS Transformer Pad TF300. It's a hell of a machine, filled with Tegra 3 4-PLUS-1 quad-core goodness, and you'll lose yourself playing the amazing games TegraZone developers have come up with on it. Trust me. ASUS puts it very well:

Running latest Android™ 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the ASUS Transformer Pad is a value packed tablet that with multi-color style, and productivity with expandability when connected to the mobile dock. With a 1.2MP front and 8MP rear auto-focus camera with large F/2.2 aperture and exclusive office software, staying connected and productive has never been easier.

We have to agree. The Transformer Pad flat out rocks.

The contest runs for three weeks, and NVIDIA is hosting a special event at E3 to announce the winning apps on June 6.

Did we mention there would be prizes? ASUS has partnered to give away Transformer Pad TF300's, complete with keyboard docks, Logitech wireless game controllers, and Jambox speakers. Boom. NVIDIA will be giving seven of the packages away to lucky voters, and ASUS has hooked us up with three of the prize packs to give away right here at AC as well. We'll be handing out one each week during the Player's Choice Award voting.

QR code for TegraZoneSo how can you win one? That's the easy part. Jump to the TegraZone (you can use the QR code to the left for a quick link) and fill out the voting questionnaire, then come back and hit up the Android contest forums to let us know you're interested. We'll have a new contest thread each week, and we'll pick a winner at random. The hardest part is figuring out just which game to vote for in each category. You don't want to miss out on this one folks!

Virgin Media UK to stock the Samsung Galaxy S III 'this summer'

Posted: 10 May 2012 12:57 PM PDT

Samsung Galaxy S III

Just when you thought it was safe to step outside, another UK carrier comes forward with plans to stock the Samsung Galaxy S III. We already know the plans of the major carriers, and some of the unlocked SIM-free prices. Step forward Virgin Media though, who have announced their own decision to carry the latest Samsung flagship.

Pricing and availability are yet to be announced, beyond coming "this summer." Where Virgin stand out though, is their range of discounts for customers of their other services like TV and Broadband. Virgin Media customers could potentially be on to a winner with this one, so if you're one of them, it could be worth watching out for.

HTC EVO 4G LTE video walkthrough and not an unboxing

Posted: 10 May 2012 11:31 AM PDT

OK, folks. The Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE is in our hot little hands. We're on Day 1, and quite frankly we're already pretty impressed. Under the hood it's basically an HTC One X. But it's been redesigned, tweaked (and truth be told, improved) and launched as the EVO 4G LTE, the follow-up to the extremely popular EVO 4G.

Some quick thoughts:

  • The display is gorgeous. And it should be -- it's the same Super LCD 2 as on the One X.
  • Under the hood, it seems speedy enough. And it should be. It's the same processor as on the One X. (The Qualcomm version, that is.)
  • Sense 4 is great. And it should be. It's the same Sense 4 that's on the HTC One phones.
  • The camera is great. And it should be. It's exactly the same as what's on the HTC One phones.
  • The rear speaker is pretty good, too. A lot of you have been asking about that.

Our full review's coming. We like to actually use the phone first. Crazy, I know. But here's a quick video walkthrough answering some of the more burning questions that have been thrown our way.

Still want to know more? Our complete EVO 4G LTE review is well in the works. In the meantime, be sure to make your way into our EVO 4G LTE forums, where you'll you'll find the best info on the net. Huzzah!

Vodafone is the latest UK network to announce its pre-order deals for the Galaxy S III, Samsung's upcoming quad-core beast. Voda's offering the 16GB on 24-month contracts starting at £41 per month. That's not a small amount of money, but Voda's throwing 900 minutes, unlimited texts and 2GB of data, in addition to a free Galaxy S III. If you're interested in the 32GB model, which is exclusive to Vodafone for the first month, that'll set you back £46 per month. That price will also get you bumped up to 1200 minutes, in addition to unlimited texts and 2GB.

Cheaper plans are available for both pebble blue and pearl white flavored Galaxy S III, starting at £26 per month, though you'll have to cough up £149 up-front if you choose this option. If it's SIM-free that you're after, then prices are currently hovering around the £500 mark.

Sony ST21i 'Tapioca' leaked again - ICS on a budget handset

Posted: 10 May 2012 09:33 AM PDT

Android Central

It was just a few weeks ago that we got our first non-blurrycam look at the Sony ST21i "Tapioca," an upcoming ICS-toting budget handset from the Japanese manufacturer. Today it's cropped up yet again, in another unauthorized hands-on preview, this time from Russian site Mobile-Review. There's not a whole lot here we haven't seen before, but the preview does take a closer look at the Tapioca's software -- a similar package to what we've been seeing on other 2012 Sony phones -- as well as giving a confirmation of some rumored specs.

The details leaked today match what we've previously heard -- the Tapioca sports a 3.2-inch HVGA display, an 800MHz single-core CPU and 512MB of RAM. It's no multimedia powerhouse, but there should be enough computational grunt there to power ICS, as well as Sony's assortment of multimedia enhancements. More pics at the source link. According to a leaked Sony roadmap, the Tapioca could appear as early as June, around the €150 price point.

T-Mobile adds 187,000 subscribers in Q1

Posted: 10 May 2012 09:17 AM PDT

T-Mobile

T-Mobile today announced its first-quarter 2012 earnings, adding 187,000 net subscribers in the first three months of the year, compared to a loss of 99,000 a year ago. Money-wise, TMoUS saw operating income rise $7.2 percent to $1.27 billion, and average revenue per user jump a couple bucks to $58. The big talk from T-Mobile this week at CTIA, however, is life after the failed AT&T acquisition. And to that end, it's continuing to upgrade its network with an announced $4 billion modernization plan that will pave the way for LTE service in 2013.

Total customers now stand at 33.4 million -- up a couple hundred thousand from the end of 2011, but still 200,000 below Q1 2011.

International Samsung Galaxy Note gets Ice Cream Sandwich

Posted: 10 May 2012 04:45 AM PDT

Android Central

If you've got an the international HSPA+ version of the Samsung Galaxy Note (GT-N7000), then your months of waiting for Android 4.0 are finally over. The "Premium Suite" for the device, which includes ICS along with a range of other  enhancements, is now pushing out to unlocked German Notes. The update to version XXLPY weighs in at over 300MB, and is currently available through Kies, as well as over-the-air via an automatic update.

As we discovered during our brief hands-on session with the North American ICS update, the Note remains fully TouchWiz'd, even on the latest version of Android. So if you're familiar with the look and feel of the Note's Gingerbread-based firmware, then you'll probably notice only a few minor visual changes. Of course, ICS brings improved performance all-round, which should help Note owners get more out of the device's beefy hardware. And the addition of the Roboto font gives the Note an added touch of class.

As for actual software enhancements, the "Premium Suite" bundles a new S Memo app with support for even richer content, including voice recordings. There's also an enhanced handwriting-to-text feature, and improved sharing capabilities for S Memo content.

If you're rocking an unlocked Note, head to Settings > About phone > Software updates to grab the latest OTA, or plug your phone into Kies to see if it's waiting for you. Remember that only German models are getting the ICS update for the time being, though if you know your way around ODIN, you can directly flash the German ROM regardless. (If you don't know what that means, it's probably best to just wait for your country/carrier's OTA.)

If you're already updated, be sure to drop by the comments and let us know what you think.

CTIA 2012 recap

Posted: 09 May 2012 08:01 PM PDT

ctia banner

Another event is wound down, and like most electronic and wireless trade shows, it was just about all Android. We didn't see anything huge, HTC and Samsung had already presented their wares, but we did see some interesting stuff.

Interesting things like Ice Cream Sandwich running on an AT&T branded Samsung Galaxy Note. No, they didn't tell us when the update was coming. We also saw MasterCard trying to get into the mobile payment game, with NFC and one-click Internet shopping. We hope they meet with success, but we hope even more that all the various players can get together and give us an NFC wallet solution that works everywhere, on every device.

Probably the biggest news from the show came from Verizon, with the Droid Incredible 4G LTE. It's not part of the HTC One line, but for folks who want a mid-sized Android phone that still is going to run well, this could be it. We'll know more when we spend some more time with it. That wasn't the only hardware worth mentioning. We saw what's coming from Huawei again, LG's Optimus 4X HD and Optimus Vu, and some really interesting edge-to-edge designs from Nyx Mobile.

We also got to sit in on a meeting of the minds behind the big four U.S. carriers, where we learned everything there is to know about the spectrum crunch, and the different ways each plans to tackle it.

And we can't forget the orange goo.

Now all we have to do is wait to see what becomes of the announcements and new devices over the summer, then get ready to do it all over again next time. It's tiring work, but we wouldn't want it any other way.

Nyx Mobile Lyuba Fun and Lyuba Max hands-on

Posted: 09 May 2012 05:02 PM PDT

Nyx Mobile Lyuba Max.

Walking around CTIA, it's always fun to find new things at random booths, and after stopping by Nyx Mobile I was met with a pleasant surprise from one of their reps. He starts the conversation with "you want to see something cool?" Of course, the geek in me wanted to scream yes, and I told him that I did. That's when he proceeded to pull out prototypes of their upcoming devices, which feature edge to edge displays. That's right, only the tiniest slither of a bezel separates the screen from the edge of the device.

The first handset that came out, the Lyuba Max, featured a 5-inch display and by doing the edge to edge display and eliminating the frame around it they were able to bring a larger screen in a smaller package. They also had a 4-inch model -- the Lyuba Fun -- and they will be finalizing a build of a 3.5-inch display as well. When the devices do launch, they'll run Ice Cream Sandwich, and feature specs comparable to other high-end devices. Hit the break to check out a couple other pictures, and stay tuned for updates from Nyx Mobile on availability of these devices.
