A second look at the Huawei Ascend P1 and Huawei Ascend D Quad [CTIA 2012]

Posted: 10 May 2012 04:47 PM PDT

We visited Huawei’s booth in hopes of finding some new Android goods, but we’re sad to say that wasn’t the case. We did decide to play with some older (well, old in terms of being announced) devices — the Huawei Ascend P1 (and, by extension, the P1s) and the Huawei D Quad. The latter, of course, houses a quad-core processor that was developed by Huawei themselves alongside 1GB of RAM, a 4.5 inch HD display and more.

The Ascend P1, on the other hand, is a smaller phone in every sense of the word. It’s one of the thinnest phones coming in at 7.68 inches. These phones were introduced at CES and Mobile World Congress with stock Android 4.0.4, but Huawei’s made some changes to the interface since. For starters, we’ve got a new launcher which doesn’t look too much different than Go Launcher EX’s default theme. We’re fairly positive this isn’t Go, but it’s close.

New icons and widgets grace the device, and a power widget sits in the notification pane, and aside from a few custom apps the rest went untouched. With a custom launcher installed you probably wouldn’t even realize Huawei made any changes. The homescreen gets the custom treatment as well, with two new options for going straight into messaging and phone. It doesn’t hurt the experience at all and actually looks great.

Unfortunately Huawei was unable to confirm whether or not there would be any more changes before these two launch, but early signs seem to indicate they won’t be mucking around too much. Watch hands-on of each device above.

LG LS970 Leaked For Sprint – Quad-Core S4 Processor, 2GB of RAM, HD Display and LTE

The leak streak continues on Sprint and no — it’s not another mid-to-entry level device. This time, we have the LG LS970 making it’s way to the Now Network in the coming months and boasts the highest specs we’ve seen on a device to date.

The boys over at Brief Mobile were able to get an image and detailed specs for the LS970, known internally as the “G” — but launching possibly under the Sprint branded “LG Eclipse 4G LTE.” LG knows full well that they have to raise the stakes if they hope to compete with the Samsung Galaxy S3, and raise the stakes they have. First thing you’ll notice is the device is sexy. Dead sexy. I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder but I’d even go as far as saying, I prefer this backside over the GS3′s (just sayin’).

But besides its wicked good looks are its almost scary specs. Whereas most devices launched/announced this year found themselves equipped with the dual-core Qualcomm S4 processor, the G will arrive on the scene with a beefier APQ8064 chipset. This is essentially the quad-core version of the dual-core S4 we’ve been seeing lately, and has a souped up Adreno 320 GPU for even better gaming performance. The LS970 will also come with a 4.67-inch 1280×768 LCD display (IPS?), 13MP rear/1.3MP front facing cameras, 16GB of internal storage, 2,100mAh battery, measures in at only 8.6mm thick and features compatibility with Sprint’s upcoming LTE network. The icing on the cake? The LS970 will come with an ample 2GB of RAM, making all your multitasking dreams come true (leaked 16Gb of RAM is in gigabits).

I don’t know about y’all, but after reading over all those specs, I’m in desperate need of a cold shower. The LG LS970 is due for Sprint during the 4th quarter of this year. What do you guys think? Could this phone be enough to change your perceptions of LG? Will the LS970 will find its way into your pocket?

If you head on over to Virgin Mobile’s website, you can pre-order the recently announced LG Optimus Elite. The device might not break any benchmark records, but it definitely wont break the bank either. The “eco-friendly” device will only set you back $150, which isn’t too shabby for those looking to upgrade their aging Samsung Intercept. The phone is due for a release on May 15th, but is already available on big sister carrier, Sprint.

Samsung Says They Chose PenTile For Galaxy S3 To Help Display Quality Last Longer

Posted: 10 May 2012 02:40 PM PDT

Before the Samsung Galaxy S3 was announced, many had suspected that the device would feature a SAMOLED Plus HD display, only to find out Samsung opted for the same Pentile HD display found in the Galaxy Nexus. Their reasoning? The screen will last longer.

Samsung’s Philip Berne explained to Mobile Burn their reasoning behind this. Apparently, this is because of the way Pentile displays feature more green subpixels than blue ones (blue degrades quickest over time), meaning overall, screen quality will degrade less over time. So, after 3 years, mom’s 4.8-inch Super AMOLED HD display will look just as gorgeous as the day she bought it (and possibly better than the competition’s traditional RGB stripe displays).

It’s possible Samsung is merely trying to play off their use of Pentile as a “benefit” to consumers. I wouldn’t be surprised if next year, Sammy goes with SAMOLED Plus as a killer feature in the Galaxy S4.

What do you guys think? Is Pentile no longer a problem on small, HD resolution displays? Or do you suffer from special eyes (like me)?

HTC EVO 4G LTE unboxing and hands-on [video]

Posted: 10 May 2012 10:05 AM PDT

We’ve finally gotten our hands on a review unit of the HTC EVO 4G LTE. I took the device back to my hotel eager to bring you guys a look at the device’s packaging, as well as what to expect when the device hits your doorstep as this is pretty much what you’ll get at retail. The device’s 1.5GHz S4 processor and 1GB of RAM make for a snappy software experience, and HTC Sense 4.0 also contributes to that smooth experience by optimizing in ways that previous renditions haven’t.

The 8 megapixel camera is one of the stars of the show thanks to the ImageSense technology inside. And after handling this device personally, I have no qualms with the design at all. Looking at it in a press render or even through a video doesn’t do it justice. Watch our unboxing and second hands-on video above. Stay on the lookout for more HTC EVO 4G LTE coverage, including a look at some sample photos and video and a full review coming up very shortly!

ASUS Padfone gets unboxing video, docks on docks on docks

Posted: 10 May 2012 09:19 AM PDT

The ASUS Padfone has been highly anticipated since it was first announced well over a year ago. After a bit of retooling it re-debuted earlier this year at Mobile World Congress, much to the intrigue of all in attendance. With a smartphone that docks into a tablet that in turn mates with a keyboard dock, ASUS has all the bases pretty much covered. The Padfone is launching soon and our friends over at NetbookNews got their hands on a production unit and gave it the full hands on treatment. Get a load of that Apple-esque packaging, which grifts the iPhone’s retail appearance down to the font. So who’s excited for the Padfone?

Use a Bluetooth headset as a remote shutter button with the HTC One X

Posted: 10 May 2012 08:46 AM PDT

Chinese site ePrice uncovered a nifty trick involving the HTC One X’s already stellar camera. Using a Bluetooth headset, the phone’s shutter can be triggered remotely for hands-free photo capture. The video demonstrating the capability shows three different headsets performing the task, each using a not-so-intuitive button combo to snap off photos. The trick likely works with other headsets but it may take some trial and error before figuring out exactly how many times to press which button. Add in a tripod and you have a pretty sweet remote camera setup that utilizes the excellent built-in capabilities of the One X. Now let’s see if it can do burst mode…

Verizon lighting up beach town 4G LTE up and down the East Coast

Posted: 10 May 2012 08:17 AM PDT

Verizon’s 4G rollout is headed for the beach and the carrier is hoping you’ll catch a gnarly LTE wave. Popular summer vacation destinations up and down the East Coast are being treated to Verizon’s high speed data network just in time for the Memorial Day holiday, the weekend that kicks off a few month’s worth of fun and sun. The beach’s of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and Massachusetts are the latest to benefit from Big Red’ aggressive LTE push. So pack your swim trunks and a towel, but don’t forget your smartphone (or your sunscreen). Just be careful around all that sound. It has a tendency to work itself into places you couldn’t even imagine (I’m talking about getting sand in your phone, people). Here is the full list:

  • Rehoboth Beach, Bethany Beach, Lewes and Seaford, Delaware
  • Ocean City and Fenwick Island; Queen Anne’s, Kent and Talbot Counties; Chestertown, Queenstown, and Easton, Maryland
  • Virginia Beach, Virginia
  • The Outer Banks, North Carolina
  • Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Blue Motorola Droid RAZR available now in select stores, online May 17

Posted: 10 May 2012 07:43 AM PDT

A leak over the weekend outed its existence and now Verizon has it for sale. A blue version of the Motorola Droid RAZR is now available, the latest in a rainbow of color options for the handset that seems almost redundant considering the existence of the Droid RAZR MAXX. Select stores have the blue RAZR in stock and ready for purchase starting today. It will see a wider release when on May 17th when it will be available online. Nothing changes between this version of the Droid RAZR and previous incarnations in black, white, and purple. That includes its rapidly aging Gingerbread OS.

Google working on native social gaming hub for Android?

Posted: 10 May 2012 06:42 AM PDT

Rumor has it Google is working on a native social gaming hub for the Android platform, one that would showcase features similar to Apple’s Game Center. The app would utilize an achievement system, leader boards, and a friend finder to pit gamers head to head. It is likely the hub will use Google+ as a means to socialize the gaming experience.

A source speaking to Business Insider says that Google has made some strides internally over the last year as to how to capitalize on Android as a gaming platform, something he said “wasn’t part of their institutional DNA.” There is no word on when Google might launch the platform, but given the time of year it’s worth speculating that Google I/O could be the perfect stage.

HTC CEO Peter Chou to be Olympic tourchbearer

Posted: 10 May 2012 05:49 AM PDT

Carrying the Olympic torch is an honor few get to experience, but HTC CEO Peter Chou will soon add his name to the list. Chou will take part in the torch relay on July 6th, three weeks prior to the opening ceremonies of the 2012 Summer Olympics. The irony of Chou’s involvement is not lost. Rival mobile manufacturer Samsung has invested heavily in sponsoring the games and will likely plaster the Olympic Village and stadiums with advertising for their Galaxy S III and other handsets. But if dozens of countries with conflicting cultures and world views can come together for some friendly sporting events, there’s no reason the two companies can’t play nice in the name of world unity.

Samsung begins Ice Cream Sandwich rollout for Galaxy Note

Posted: 10 May 2012 05:13 AM PDT

Android 4.0 has started to rollout to international versions of the Samsung Galaxy Note. Reports are coming in from some users who have received notifications to install the update as an over-the-air download. In Germany, the update is available for download via Samsung’s Kies software. The software is tagged with build designation XXLPY and brings the Note to Android 4.0.3.

The Ice Cream Sandwich push will likely take a few weeks to reach all users in all regions. For those with carrier-branded versions of the device, it gets a bit harder to predict when both Samsung and network providers will deem the update ready for deployment.
